Doro Pesch, The Voice Of WARLOCK, Celebrates 30th Anniversary Of Legendary Triumph And Agony Full-Length; Special US Live Dates Featuring Guitarist Tommy Bolan

Released in 1987, Triumph And Agony is the fourth studio album from German heavy metal titansWARLOCK. The record was a mammoth success globally with hit singles and MTV’s Headbangers Ball favorites “All We Are” and “Für Immer” among other now-pinnacle anthems like “East Meets West,” “Metal Tango,” “I Rule The Ruins,” and “Touch Of Evil.” Triumph And Agony stands among heavy metal’s true cult classics.

Wrote Decibel Magazine of the zenith offering, “Triumph And Agony contains one glorious anthem after another for the duration of its (too short) forty-minute run time. ‘All We Are’ is the big fist-pumper, their ‘Rock You Like A Hurricane’ or ‘You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’.’ ‘Three Minute Warning’ absolutely scorches, something Accept would have been proud to write. ‘I Rule The Ruins’ lays waste to everything and THEN rules it. ‘Kiss Of Death’ provides the requisite tragic vampire soliloquy, and ‘Make Time For Love’ provides the requisite drama ballad. ‘East Meets West’ taps some serious spine with its love letter to the Land Of The Rising Sun, while ‘Metal Tango’ may be the only, well, metal tango. And then there’s ‘Touch Of Evil,’ which ends with one of the most astonishing vulgar displays of screeching ever recorded.”

And three decades later, the record has lost none of its charm. In honor of its 30th anniversary,WARLOCK vocalist Doro Pesch will perform the fist-raising full-length in its entirety. Joined by original Triumph And Agony guitarist Tommy Bolan alongside bassist Nick Douglas, drummer Johnny Dee, guitarist Bas Maas and guitarist/keyboardist Luca Princiotta, Pesch will hit Worcester TONIGHT followed by performances in New York City, Detroit, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

“Triumph And Agony was our breakthrough album in America,” issues Pesch, “and it’s still one of my absolute favorites! I’m so excited to play some of these songs for the first time and I’m so much looking forward to play with Tommy again. I’m sure it’s gonna sound great and we’ll put on a killer show.”

Guitarist Tommy Bolan discusses about Warlock, Triumph and Agony 30’th Anniversary shows and more

August 27th, 2017

TOMMY BOLAN

Warlock was a German heavy metal band, formed originally in 1982. The band gained popularity and commercial success in Europe in the mid-1980s, due also to the personality and stage presence of female lead vocalist Doro Pesch. Warlock supported on tour successful metal bands, such as Judas Priest and Megadeth and they also performed on some of the biggest metal festivals including Monsters of Rock at Castle Donington in 1986. A couple of months later the band relocated to the US and also went through a few line-up changes. Guitarist Peter Szigeti and bassist Frank Rittel left the band they were replaced by American musicians Tommy Bolan and Tommy Henriksen. The new lineup started working new material with acclaimed producer Joey Balin, and as a result, the band released TRIUMPH AND AGONY (1987) which is still the band’s most successful album to date. Although the album was a big success, there were more changes to come. By the end of the decade, Doro Pesch was the sole original member who remained in the band, and she was forced to change the name to Doro for legal reasons. Doro has continued her successful career as a solo artist, but Warlock has reunited with different lineups for festival appearances and special occasions since 2003, under the name Warlock 1986. In 2017, Doro announced that she’s going to reunite with TRIUMPH AND AGONY era guitarist Tommy Bolan and the band would do a selected shows to celebrate the 30’th Anniversary of the album under the name Doro Pesch’s Warlock. The first show took its place in Swedenrock Festival on June. There I had a pleasure to meet Tommy and discuss all things related to his time with Warlock, reuniting with Doro and his other career steps including working with Richie Ramone. Read on!

SWEDENROCK 2017

July 9th, 2017

SWEDENROCK 2017

Once again, the Finnish Metal-Rules.com two-man-team made their annual road trip to Sweden Rock.  The 2017 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock as usual. Over 70 bands offered one hell of an experience for the attendees during the four-day festival. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past twenty years, always being sold out as it was again this year. However, it took a bit longer until all the tickets were gone this year. It has become quite logical for us to give an in-depth report on several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. It was an enormous pleasure to testify Scorpions, Venom, Ratt, Warlock, Running Wild, and a whole lot more.  Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully, you will have a pleasant reading experience… Stay hard, True As Steel.

Doro

A week after Europe and the UK were shaken by previous news of terror in France at the Bataclan concert hall, venues in London chose to carry on with hosting live music shows. It was thus fitting that one of these would be Heavy Metal Queen Doro Pesch at The Garage in Highbury & Islington, for the London leg of her European tour. Having styled herself as a champion for freedom and love through the genre, it can be said that Doro was a symbol of hope for this reporter, while also being a symbol of the 80’s for her better known Warlock days.

DORO PESCH

Doro Pesch

DORO PESCH

INTERVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

German vocalist Doro Pesch is one of the best-known female singers in heavy metal, and she has earned the designation of Metal Queen. At first, Doro became known as the lead singer of band Warlock with whom she released four albums including the classics TRUE AS STEEL (1986) and TRIUMPH AND AGONY (1987). The band disbanded in 1989 and Doro then started her successful solo career which includes, so far, twelve studio albums. The latest album titled RAISE YOUR FIST was released last October and this time the tour arrived to Finland. I met the always joyful Metal Queen in the backstage of Club Nosturi and here are the results of our nice conversation. Read on!

The exclusive re-releases of Warlock’s albums out soon

January 10th, 2011

Warlock is without question one of the most prominent bands in the history of German heavy metal. Their musical journey began in the early 1980’s and came to a sudden stop in 1987, when the group’s singer, Doro Pesch, was forced to continue her career under a new moniker. This year, Metal Mind Productions are proud to present three exclusive re-releases of Warlock’s amazing albums – „Hellbound”, „True As Steel” and „Triumph and Agony”, all of which capture the sheer essence of heavy metal, delivering fast and melodic riffs, intense drumming and stunning vocal performances by one of the best female metal singers of all times!

The band was originally assembled in 1982 in Düsseldorf, Germany and featured the following line-up: Doro Pesch (vocals), Peter Szigeti (guitar), Frank Rittel (bass), Rudy Graf (guitar) and Michael Eurich (drums). In 1984, Warlock released their spectacular debut album entitled “Burning the Witches”, which brought them even more fame and recognition. In May 1985, the band released their second LP “Hellbound” via Vertigo Records. The follow-up was a significant step away from the traditional heavy metal approach which could be heard on “Burning The Witches”. This time the group focused more on incorporating elements of hard rock and power metal into their style. Nevertheless, “Hellbound” proved to be the heaviest and most intense material that Warlock has ever recorded, and probably one of the heaviest albums released in 1985 (outside of thrash metal, that is). The LP featured such highlights as “Earthshaker Rock”, “Wrathchild” and the beautiful closing ballad “Catch My Heart”. By the end of their touring period, Rudy Graf left Warlock and was soon replaced by Niko Arvanitis (ex-Stormwind). The renewed line-up signed a record deal with Phonogram for their next album. The band’s third opus “True As Steel” saw the light of day in August 1986. The LP became a big success in the US, mostly thanks to a fair amount of airplay for the single “Fight For Rock”. In terms of style, “True As Steel” showcased a bit more mainstream approach, with a greater emphasis on melodic choruses and, at times, clearly influenced by such bands as Dokken or Quiet Riot. The highlights of the LP include the powerful opener “Mr. Gold”, the speed-metal anthem “Midnite in China” and the stunning power ballad “Love Song”. Soon after the album was released, Warlock performed at the Monsters of Rock festival in Germany, next to such legendary acts as Scorpions, Def Leppard, Ozzy Osbourne and Bon Jovi. Next, they went on a full tour to promote the album, at the end of which bassist Frank Rittel and guitarist Peter Szigeti called it quits. They were replaced by Tommy Bolan (ex-Armed Forces) and Tommy Henriksen. Warlock’s fourth LP “Triumph and Agony” was released in September 1987. The album went even further into mainstream grounds, delivering perhaps the most cohesive material in the band’s entire career. The music video “All We Are” was often played on MTV’s “Headbanger’s Ball” and, to this day, the song remains the most successful Warlock single. Other fine cuts from the album include the crushing “I Rule the Ruins”, the rock-oriented “Metal Tango” and the touching “Für Immer” (“Forever”) with inspirational lyrics sung in German. The release was followed by the group’s first ever American tour, during which they supported Megadeth along with Sanctuary. This was followed by a series of headlining shows, with Warlock being supported by such acts as Lillian Axe or Fates Warning. Unfortunately, after the tour has ended, both Michael Eurich and Niko Arvanitis left the group, leaving Doro as the band’s sole original member. After the recruitment of drummer Bobby Rondinelli (ex-Rainbow) and guitarist Jon Levin, Doro was ready to record Warlock’s fifth LP. However, her plans were foiled by a law suit issued by the group’s ex-manager who claimed the rights for Warlock’s name. Surprisingly, he won and Doro, pressured by her record label, chose to continue her career under a new moniker. As DORO, the singer released many successful albums, the most recent being “Fear No Evil” from 2009.

In 2004, Doro reunited with the original members of Warlock for a few festival performances. Unfortunately, legal problems made it impossible for the band to continue using their original name. Warlock ceased to exist along with “Triumph and Agony”, a title which proved to be an ironic metaphor of the group’s future. Nevertheless, thanks to the exclusive re-releases of „Hellbound”, „True As Steel” and „Triumph and Agony” fans may once again revisit the golden years of Warlock – the years that brought the true quintessence of heavy metal. The albums will be available in a new digipak edition each limited to 2000 copies. Each title includes bonus tracks. Metal Mind Productions set the release date for 31st January 2011.

Doro Pesch

Interviewed by EvilG

Some of you will remember Doro from her successful career with the German metal band Warlock. That band fell apart in the late 80’s but Doro’s musical career did not end there! After spending a good part of the past decade pursuing a solo career in Europe, Doro has once again obtained a record deal for the USA with Koch Records. Her new CD Calling The Wild is out now. I was given the opportunity to speak with Doro just prior to the release of her CD in September.

Thanks to Koch Records
and to Mark Morton for making
this interview a reality.
