Hell yeah! It’s time to enter the mighty Swedenrock Festival. A fantastic and the most enjoyable rock and metal festival on earth. It has to be pointed out that Metal Rules has covered Sweden Rock since 2001! Therefore, it is quite logical to cover the festival again. The 2014 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock. Approximately 80 metal and rock bands offered one hell of an experience for attendees. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past decade as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t an exception as the fest was sold out despite a lousy economic situation worldwide. It has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article on several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The weather was both rainy and sunny during these four days. The Metal-Rules.com team was there to witness the bands, not for some kinda beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Rock on!

Graspop Festival update: W.A.S.P. and Overkill out, Iced Earth and Steak Number Eight in

June 3rd, 2013
Iced Earth

Iced Earth, Underworld, 20-12-12

Much to our regret both W.A.S.P. and Overkill have been forced to cancel their Graspop show for Saturday 29 June.

W.A.S.P. frontman Blackie Lawless has suffered a broken leg in a car crash. As a result, W.A.S.P. have been forced to cancel their 2013 European summer festival dates, including their GMM show. On the upside, we are pleased to report we have found a suitable replacement in ICED MOTHERFUCKING EARTH! Indeed, the American power metal kings are returning to the Dessel plains. Their epic and emotional performance at GMM2011 was their last Belgian show with vocalist Matt Barlow. This year they’re back with new frontman Stu Block, whose vocal skills are every bit as impressive as those of his predecessor. For the last eighteen months they’ve been touring the globe practically non-stop in support of the Dystopia album. On 29 June this well-oiled metal machine will unleash its ferocious power on the GMM crowd so warm up those neck muscles and prepare to weather the storm!

Official statement: “Blackie Lawless was injured in a vehicle related accident that resulted in him breaking a leg. Complete recovery is expected following surgery. W.A.S.P. apologizes with all sincerity and say to all of our fans that we will be back next year bigger and better than ever. Blackie would also like to thank in advance all of those who wish to make inquiries about his well-being.”

Overkill is being replaced with Steak Number Eight. Ever since they became the youngest ever winners of Humo’s Rockrally in 2008, their career kicked into high gear with three full-length releases, extensive touring across Europe and support slots for Deftones, Torche and Pelican. Their latest album, ‘The Hutch’, garnered rave reviews both in Belgium and abroad. In spite of their youth, Steak Number Eight can already be considered a top act on the European sludge metal scene.

THE CIRCUS, HELSINKI

17′TH OCTOBER 2012

REVIEW AND PICS BY MARKO SYRJALA

American heavy metal band, W.A.S.P., has been annual visitors in Finland during the last decade and this year was no exception. Since there’s no new album to promote, this tour was built upon the bands 30’TH Anniversary. The ads said that this tour is going to be the biggest spectacle W.A.S.P. has ever created and the message was well received since all four shows in Finland were practically sold out a long time ago. About 1500 eager people arrived to The Circus and they were ready witness the spectacle.

L.A. GUNS – drummer Steve Riley (ex- W.A.S.P, Keel)

November 24th, 2011

STEVE RILEY

INTERVIEW AND LIVE PICS BY MARKO SYRJALA

L.A. Guns are best known as being one of the veterans of the Sunset Strip’s hair metal scene. The band formed in 1983 by guitarist Tracii Guns and after several line-up changes they found the right members and the classic line-up then consisted of Guns, vocalist Phil Lewis, drummer Steve Riley, bassist Kelly Nickels and guitarist Mick Cripps. Their late 80’s/early 90’s albums COCKED AND LOADED and HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES were highly successful. The 90’s proved to be a difficult time for L.A. Guns, as it was for many metal and hard rock bands. A great number of line-up changes and unsuccessful albums followed but the band finally got back on track with the 2001 album MAN ON THE MOON which once again included Guns, Riley, Cripps and Lewis back together. The next album WAKING THE DEAD followed in 2002 but although that album had many great reviews, and the band had some good tour offers, Tracii Guns decided to quit and concentrate on his brand new project Brides of Destruction which also included Nikki Sixx from Mötley Crue. The band lost their record deal and already booked tour but decided to carry on with a new guitar player. Stacey Blades (ex-Roxx Gang) stepped in and the album TALES FROM THE STRIP was released in 2005 and since then the band has been actively touring across the globe. The current version of L.A Guns includes: Lewis, Riley, Blades and the latest addition bassist Scotty Griffin.  The band arrived to Stockholm on late October and then we had an honor to sit down with Mr. Riley and hear the latest news and other interesting stuff as well… Read on!

According to a press release, Where Angels Suffer will embrace their metal history while simultaneously astounding their fans with groundbreaking original songs that could only be created by the exceptional chemistry and passion these professional musicians discovered when they came together again.

Piper, an original member of W.A.S.P. along with Chris Holmes and Blackie Lawless, helped create the sound that took the band’s first two records to gold status. “I play from the heart!” Randy says.

Randy’s credit to heavy metal can not be summed up very easily as he is continually embarking on creative pursuits and is still very much a part of the metal scene. “You can’t go back, but you can definitely move ahead,” he says.

Holmes has etched out a stellar career which can be traced back to the early days of the metal scene that infiltrated L.A. and the Sunset Strip. A California native himself, Holmes is also well known for his role in The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years and other projects, both in film and music, having played with the “A” list of metal musicians.

Piper and Holmes, who were an essential part of W.A.S.P., have stayed in close contact and feel now is the perfect time to launch the much-anticipated project fans have been waiting for.

Longtime drummer of W.A.S.P., Howland was featured on ten albums (studio and live) and has toured with all the top metal acts, including BLACK SABBATH, a personal highlight during his W.A.S.P. years. Aside from W.A.S.P., the ever-active Howland’s resume includes TEMPLE OF BRUTALITY, RUN 21, KILLING MACHINE, BELLADONNA, BLACKFOOT and LITA FORD, just to name a few. Howland resides in Florida, where he has a recording studio to keep him busy on a variety of projects, including his newest one, a reality show that will be filmed at his home and studio.

“We’re going out and were rocking,” says Howland, who sees Where Angels Suffer as an opportunity to bring some great musicians together and make some “real music.”

Steve Unger, who played with Metal Church, is a talented bassist in his own right: his contribution to Where Angels Suffer completes the dynamic of the band. Grateful for the opportunity to play on the project, he and the other band members have a mutual respect for one another because of the unbelievable talent of each artist involved.

Unger, who comes from Seattle, Washington, has had a long career with Metal Church and has been a key contributor to their success over the years. He believes this album will be one of the best culminations of talent the metal scene has seen in a long time. Unger commented that the music is so relevant today because it is “a high-bred cross-breed between old and new.”

Lewis, a longtime friend and fellow musician of Piper and Holmes, was a natural choice for Where Angels Suffer frontman and has become a key component to this venture. He has played alongside many greats artists, including his current bandmates, some of whom where in ANIMAL. He has been compared to greats like Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickinson and Lawless, but his signature style has blended with the dynamic sound of his bandmates that sets this album apart from the rest.

Where Angels Suffer is a unification of style, brought together by each band member’s tenacious effort and dedication to bring the fans the music they love. Whether it was the alignment of the planets or simply the right timing, the production of the album and the formation of the band came together seamlessly.

An Amazon pre-order is also available.

Twisted Sister, Tuff, W.A.S.P. Members Cover Nugent for Fat Chick Tribute Album

August 17th, 2010
WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks

WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks

Three additional musicians have been confirmed for the upcoming tribute album “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks.” Founding Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French, Tuff vocalist Stevie Rachelle and drummer Stet Howland (Lita Ford, W.A.S.P.) have collaborated on a new recording of the Ted Nugent cult favorite “Thunder Thighs,” a track from his 1986 “Penetrator” album. As Ted himself reveals in its liner notes, “‘Thunder Thighs’ is a career highpoint, as far as I and many others are concerned.” The story of a lusty young lady with a healthy appetite (and healthy curves to match), the new version is delivered with equal gusto and enthusiasm by the talented trio above. The track was arranged and produced by Paul LaPlaca (Chris Caffrey, The Great Kat, Zandelle), who also contributes bass and rhythm guitar. A sample of the song is now available at the official “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE” MySpace page.

http://www.myspace.com/WholeLottaLoveTribute

“I am the voice of this lost Nugent nugget,” says Stevie Rachelle, “and it sure was a fun one to sing! Uncle Ted does indeed rock. Always has, always will.”

“I recorded my guitar parts fresh out of seeing ‘Avatar’ by James Cameron,” comments Jay Jay French. “So even though I was laying down tracks for a song about some girl with meaty legs, all I kept picturing were those elongated blue aliens with their 3% body fat!”

“Ironically, I found myself working on ‘Thunder Thighs’ during a thunderstorm,” reveals Stet Howland, “and a lightning strike fried my system! To say that the files got corrupted would be an understatement! Long story short, after buying a new computer, reloading and upgrading my Pro Tools and shouting a lot of random curse words, my drum tracks were done!”

W.A.S.P -Blackie Lawless

November 22nd, 2009

BabylonFinalCover.jpg

BLACKIE LAWLESS

Legendary U.S band W.A.S.P. would stir up quite a bit of controversy in their mid 80’s heyday thanks to their explicit lyrics and over-the-top stage show, which many deemed violent and sexist. That controversy would fade in time as the band tamed a bit and many more controversial acts came long, but not before putting the band on the map of the rock world and creating a ton of free publicity. The band released its self titled classic debut in 1984, and wouldn’t stop or even slow down despite some highly disruptive lineup changes and slowly fading album sales. The band has been relentless in their album releases, almost never letting up or even taking a bit of a breather. Their latest effort, 14’th studio album, BABYLON, arrived stores just a couple of months ago. Although this band has faced many ups and downs in its long career they now seem to do extremely well especially here in Scandinavia. In Finland alone, band now sold out four shows and performed altogether in a front of over 6000 WASP maniacs, that’s not so bad on these days isn’t it? In Helsinki we had a chance to sit down with the bands founder and mastermind Blackie Lawless and discuss many current topics including: the new album BABYLON, The Crimson Idol Anniversary –tour, the past, the future, the current global situation, politics and Blackies’ thoughts about retiring… Read on and learn!!

RANDY PIPER of Animal, ex-W.A.S.P.

August 21st, 2007
Randy Piper

RANDY PIPER’S ANIMAL

INTERVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

TRANSCRIPTION BY NEIL BATTY

Guitarist Randy Piper is an American musician who made his name in W.A.S.P in the early 80′s. The band’s debut single, entitled “Animal (Fuck like a Beast)”, was released in 1983 and it was an instant success. A self titled debut album came out one year later and it included such classics as “I Wanna Be Somebody”, “L.O.V.E Machine” and “Sleeping in the Fire”. THE LAST COMMAND was released in 1985 and it another successful album with the help of such gems as “Wild Child” and “Blind in Texas“.  After the Last Command -tour Randy quit the band and then he briefly worked with Alice Cooper before he started his own band Animal. Although Animal has been around more than twenty years it wasn’t until 2002 that band released its first studio album titled 900lbs STEAM. There have been numerous line -up changes in the bands history, at one point former W.A.S.P colleagues Chris Holmes and Tony Richards were members, but Randy and singer Rich Lewis are still remaining from the very first Animal line up. The band’s second album VIOLENT NEW BREED was released in 2006.  The album was produced by Swedish guitarist/producer Chris Laney who was also joined in the bands ranks. Today there are actually three Swedish guys in  Animal; Chris on guitar, Grizzy on bass and J.Koleberg on drums. The new line up of animal did a brief tour in Europe last May/June and I was honored to talk with the guys after their brilliant show in the backstage of the Swedenrock festival. Here they are: Randy, Rich and Chris from ANIMAL!!!

Tuska Open Air 2007 – Helsinki, Finland

August 13th, 2007

Tuska Open Air Metal Festival

The 29th of June ? The 1st of July 2007

The Central Park of Kaisaniemi

Helsinki Finland

Review and pics by Luxi Lahtinen and Arto Lehtinen

(additional comments by Mika Hankaniemi)

Once again the prestigious Tuska open air metal festival is here. Thousands of metalheads have travelled from all around Finland and other countries to the central park of Kaisaniemi in order to celebrate the real metal inferno in the middle of Helsinki. This year the Tuska metal festival celebrates its tenth anniversary and of course the offering of the line-up of bands is as colorful as in the previous events.

Getting the mighty Norwegian black metal legends like Emperor and Immortal have been the most awaited ones amongst the audience for sure. However although these so-called big black metal legends definitely attract more of the extreme metal fans, the festival is not limited to one certain metal category. Everyone has something to feel and see and taste during these three days. Above all, power metal had a strong line up - for example Blind Guardian and Stratovarius, being the most known names in Tuska?s bill in 2007.

The festival has become a real guaranteed pure metal festival and has had massive popularity amongst all kinds of metalheads of all ages. The majority of the tickets were already sold out quickly in the advance sales a long time ago. However there were some leftovers if someone was willing to buy, and taste a feeling of metal after all.

Metal-Rules.com was again at Tuska to give an exact review and article on bands. Therefore sit down and enjoy your reading.

Sauna Open Air Metal Festival 2006

July 26th, 2006

Sauna Open Air Metal Festival, Tampere, Finland, 8th-10th of June 2006

Intro/outro by Luxi “come-out-and-play” Lahtinen

Mindless commentary, bullshitting, spitting, farting, headaches, mumbling, cursing, getting wasted, demons on shoulders, handclapping,  sophisticated way of using swear words, photographing, killing of the giants / slaughtering of the gayest, documenting of all kinds, etc. by Luxi “L.O.V.E. Machine”  Lahtinen & Niko “burn-in-Hell”  Karppinen

“Satan´s calling… Ave Luciferus… Ave Satanas! Heavy Metal is dangerous for your health. It reaps your soul and destroys your mind”.

If that´s so, we had arrived to the right place. Sauna Open Air Metal Festival opened its doors for the third time in its entire history, this time having booked some very interesting yet big names for the bill – Iggy & The Stooges, Lordi and Twisted Sister being probably those three bands that made most of the people travel to the festival, yet not underestimating all the other bands (like W.A.S.P., Finntroll, Stam1na – and so on…) that participated in this metallic event in one of the Finland´s biggests cities, Tampere.

This year´s bill was basically shared for three musical categories: Thursday was for a more rock-orientated bands (Blake, The Black League, Iggy & The Stooges, etc.), Friday for more extreme sounding bands (Finntroll, Diablo, Cradle of Filth, etc.) and Saturday, which was also sold-out due to bands like Lordi and Twisted Sister, we were treated to bands that have based their sounds on more of a tradiotional Heavy Metal sound, so basically everyone found some bands for his/her likings.

Also two (well-) aged (but not bald), dumb (but not stupid) and close-minded (but not THAT narrow-minded) reporters from the largely respected Canadian Metal-Rules.com webmagazine intruded through the gates of the festival just like last year, and the following diary was put together by them (Read the last year´s S.O.A.M. -festival diary from here), out of the (well-selected) bands at the Sauna Open Air Metal Festival 2006. Read on…
