Vreid – Interview with vocalist and guitarist Sture Dingsøyr
Interview by Kirsty Birkett-Stubbs
It’s not only phoenixes that rise out of ashes, there are some bands that have has a similar birth. Vreid, or Wrath as their name translates, are one such outfit brought to life following a tragic death in former band Windir. After six strongly received albums though it’s clear that Vreid is far more than just a fill-in for what once was, bringing together the black metal’s untempered edge with the groove of rock n roll, and just a touch of Windir’s ambiance. Giving us a wave is vocalist and guitarist Sture Dingsøyr as he talks new release Welcome Farewell, and what’s been happening since it said hello….
Today Norwegian black ‘n’ roll legion VREID release new single “The Way Of The Serpent” from their forthcoming new full-length, Welcome Farewell. Cold and compelling, the follow-up to 2011’s Norwegian Grammy-nominated album V, which Decibel Magazinecalled, “…VREID’s finest hour,” was recorded at bassist Hváll’s own Studio 1184 and is set for North American release via Indie Recordings March 5, 2013.
Described by Metal Hammer UK as a “unique time-travel in metal,” commending their merge of ‘70s rock, ‘80s classic metal and Norwegian black metal, with the eight-track Welcome Farewell VREID again add a new twist to their already difficult-to-pinpoint sound. Comments Hváll of the new material, “It’s been a lot of work, but we are utterly pleased with the result. ‘Dark,’ ‘heavy’ and ‘VREID’ are the three keywords to describe it.”

VREID formed in 2004 following the demise of ‘’Sognametal” legends Windir. Some described their music as a fusion of Windir’s ambiance, the rawness of Norwegian black metal and the molten groove of Sepultura, Metallica and Motörhead blended with historically inspired lyrics. Their third and fourth offerings, I Krig and Milorg, were both concept albums based around the liberation work in Norway during World War II. Liberation was also the keyword on V, but put in a broader historical/philosophic perspective. The lyrics on Welcome Farewell describe a lifecycle through a series of short stories, seen from an existential point of view and, inspired by Hváll’s own local community with its nature, architecture and historical artists such as Arne Garborg and Otto Valstad, are more personal than ever before.
Hváll – Bass
Sture – Vocals/Guitar
Strom – Guitar
Steingrim – Drums

Atheist and Cynic in 2006. Pestilence in 2008. I can see a pattern starting to emerge…In all seriousness though, unless there’s cloning technology that will bring us back Chuck Schuldiner and resurrect Death, fans of old school progressive death metal have pretty much been in heaven over the last year or so. Cynic playing Wacken and releasing a new album, Pestilence releasing a new album and returning to the touring circuit, and a new Atheist album on the cards…incredible.
The resurrection of Pestilence probably raised the most eyebrows though, and frontman/guitarist Patrick Mameli moved quickly to quell any rumours that him and Martin van Drunen had made up and reunited under Pestilence’s banner. In fact, Tony Choy is the only person in the current line-up to have played in Pestilence before. But no matter, their recently released album RESURRECTION MACABRE promises much for the future of these Dutch guys.
Thanks to the dedication of Paul and Felicity at Arcane Promotions (the people who bring the excellent Deathfest annually to London), we had the chance to see Pestilence right here on our doorstep, instead of traipsing over half of Europe to catch them at festivals – although no doubt we’ll be doing that in the summer anyway!
