VOIVOD To Release ‘Mechanical Mind’ Single; Audio Clip Available

September 15th, 2012

A short preview of “Mechanical Mind”, a brand new song from Canadian metal innovators VOIVOD, is available in the YouTube clip below. The track will be released on October 9 (one day earlier internationally) as a digital single and a limited-edition seven-inch single-sided vinyl with a skull etching by VOIVOD drummer Michel “Away” Langevin on the B-side.

“Mechanical Mind” comes off VOIVOD’s new album, “Target Earth”, which will be released on January 22, 2013 (one day earlier internationally) via VOIVOD’s own company, Iron Gang Factory, and Century Media.

Commented VOIVOD: “Our goal has been to find a partner for Iron Gang Factory to help get new VOIVOD music to the world and Century Media, we are proud to say, is the right company to do so globally. We can’t wait to release tour and promote ‘Target Earth’.”

“Target Earth” was recorded in January at Pierre Rémillard’s (OBLIVEON, CRYPTOPSY, KRISIUN, MISERY INDEX) Wild Studio in a small town called St-Zénon in Quebec, Canada. The follow-up to 2009’s “Infini” will contain the band’s first music to be written with new guitarist Daniel “Chewy” Mongrain (MARTYR) following the passing of original axeman Denis “Piggy” D’Amour in 2005.

VOIVOD drummer Michel “Away” Langevin recently unveiled the band’s new logo which will be used on the upcoming CD.

Several photos from the recording sessions can be found on the band’s Facebook page.

According to a posting on the page, fans can “expect something in the vein of ‘Nothingface’ with some elements from the other albums. It will be a classic VOIVOD album.”

Regarding what the new VOIVOD songs sound like, Mongrain said in a recent interview, “As a VOIVOD fan since I am 12 years old and early rise of VOIVOD in late ’80s and everything, I think… I’m in conflict of interest right now. [Laughs] I like the old stuff as much as the new stuff, so I think it’s a blend of everything. It’s really a team work and Blacky [Jean-Yves Thériault] is back on the ‘blower bass’ — he’s got the original sound — and we’re having a blast jamming, improvising and writing. I think it’s working pretty good.”

On the topic of the lyrical themes covered in the new VOIVOD tracks, singer Denis “Snake” Bélanger said, “The song we played [on the recent European tour] [‘Kaleidos’] is about conspiracy involving drugs and the FBI… [Laughs] It’s hard to describe because we’re kind of early in the process. There’s another song called ‘Target Earth’, which is more like a spacy, conspiracy, controlling the information around the world. The main thing is the ‘war’ of information. You know, somebody Osama Bin Laden is dead, someone [else] says he’s not… It gets to a point where everybody has his own story and nobody is sure what the truth is. There’s people above everything controlling the information.”

In an interview with, Away stated about VOIVOD’s forthcoming studio album, “It’s more in the progressive metal vein, so it’s reminiscent of the ‘Dimension Hatröss’ era.”

VOIVOD debuted the “Target Earth” title track during their April 12 concert at the Roadburn festival at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

VOIVOD will embark on a European headlining tour in October. They will also play several shows in Spain as the support act for ARCH ENEMY.

Fan-filmed video footage of VOIVOD performing the title track of their forthcoming album, “Target Earth”, on June 29 at Zone Portuaire de Chicoutimi in Chicoutimi, Quebec, Canada can be seen below.

VOIVOD 2012 is:

Denis “Snake” Bélanger – Vocals

Daniel “Chewy” Mongrain – Guitar

Jean-Yves “Blacky” Thériault – Bass

VOIVOD signs with Century Media Records

September 4th, 2012

Century Media Records is proud to announce the worldwide signing of Quebecois progressive metal pioneers VOIVOD! To coincide with the band’s 30th Anniversary – the band was founded in late January, 1983 – VOIVOD’s own company, Iron Gang Factory, joins with global powerhouse Century Media Records to release Target Earth on January 21st throughout Europe and the 22nd in North America. Comments, the band:

“Our goal has been to find a partner for Iron Gang Factory to help get new VOIVOD music to the world and Century Media, we are proud to say, is the right company to do so globally  We can’t wait to release, tour, and promote ‘Target Earth.'”

VOIVOD’s career path has endured as many shifts and disturbances as the music itself. From major label deals and big-time tours to slogging it out in clubs while metal went through growing pains in the mid 1990s; from high profile bass players to unknown substitutes, the Quebecois prog metal pioneers have persevered through thick and thin to arrive at a comfortable place in 2012 — a place of rebirth, rejuvenation and respect.

VOIVOD’s 30th anniversary celebrates their career as one of metal’s most influential bands. The handful of live albums, reissues and DVDs that began to surface in the past ten years proved how beloved this band really is, and now comes another album of inspired fresh material that proves VOIVOD still have many new paths to travel. What band continues to redefine and reinvent themselves 13 studio albums and 30 years into their career? There is only one answer to that question: VOIVOD.

VOIVOD Confirmed For Montreal’s Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival

March 15th, 2012

VOIVOD has been confirmed for Montreal’s Suoni Per Il Popolo which will run from June 6 to 23. The festival – celebrating its 12th year – presents Liberation music to audiences in Montréal, Québec, according to a press release.

“Liberation music is inspired by freedom of expression, improvisation, and sonic exploration and appeals to music aficionados world wide. Liberation music is comprised of an eclectic collection of genres which includes but is not limited to free jazz, noise, electronica, turntable art, soundscapes, experimental rock, electronica, musique actuelle and spoken word. Given the context in which much of this music is made and the reaction it provokes, it is also music that resonates with progressive social movements. The festival presents both established musicians who bring a wealth of tradition, experience and history to their playing as well as younger, emerging artists.”

Roadburn – Tillburg Holland

May 27th, 2011

013 and Mid Theatre

The 12th – 15th of April

Article and pics by Arto Lehtinen

Once again it is April and time to return to the Roadburn festival in Tillburg, Holland. The line-up for  2011 looked absolutely awesome in every aspect.  A few of the bands who were forced to cancel their appearance last year had been re-booked (i.e. Candlemass and Evoken). Roadburn offered a nice deal of Finnish bands as well such as Hooded Menace. It was the sonic masters Sunn O))) who had been chosen to guide and be a curator of the Roadburn 2011. The members of Sunn O))) which have plenty of other bands picked up bands fitting to their taste and the concept of the Roadburn festival. Roadburn could be bigger and larger, but due to the cult status and the will of the organization of the fest, it will remain as intimate as it has been since the beginning. got an excellent privilege of visiting the Roadburn festival for the second time in a row to see plenty of killer bands, smell the taste of weed with awesome people, and be a part of an awesome festival atmosphere.

VOIVOD Launch Warriors Of Ice Live Album

April 28th, 2011
VOIVOD - Warriors Of Ice

VOIVOD - Warriors Of Ice

Canadian metallers VOIVOD have launched Warriors Of Ice, a live album recorded in Montreal. The album is now available digitally and the physical release date is set for June 14th via Indica Records.

This unique band who over the years have been able to create their own sound and path, who braved adversity and hardships – notably the death of Denis Piggy D’Amour in 2005 – are offering to their fans their first ever live record to feature original members Denis “Snake” Belanger, Michel “Away” Langevin and Jean Yves “Blacky” Theriault, and new guitar player Daniel Mongrain, thus adding onto their impressive discography that spans close to three decades.

Glen Robinson, who is renown for his work on ‘Nothingface’, recorded Voivod’s concert on December 12th 2009 at Club Soda in Montreal, the band’s adopted hometown. The concert was the first headline show in Montreal in over 10 years and was a release party for the DVD Tatsumaki Live In Japan, where they played both classics from the 80s and 90s and newer songs written with Jason Newsted of METALLICA fame, who joined Voivod on bass for 3 records, Voivod, Katorz and Infini.

On Warriors Of Ice, the listeners can hear Voivod’s more classical sound as they did on War And Pain in 1984 or Angel Rat in 1991 as well as tracks from Infini, released in 2009. All of the band’s greatest hits can be found on this record, everything from ‘Voivod’ to ‘Nuclear War’ and ‘Tribal Conversations’ and even their remake of early PINK FLOYD, ‘Astronomy Domine’, thus making this record a must-have for die-hard Voivod fans as well as a great introductory album for new fans in the making.

Voivod is currently on tour across Europe until late May and will be coming back to North America just in time for the festival season. Tour dates to be announced shortly, stay tuned.

Warriors Of Ice tracklisting:

‘The Unknown Knows’

‘The Prow’

‘Ripping Headaches’

‘Ravenous Medicine’

‘Tribal Convictions’

‘Global Warning’

‘Treasure Chase’

‘Brain Scan’

‘Nuclear War’

‘Astronomy Domine’

VOIVOD Members Contribute to ‘MEAN DEVIATION: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal’

August 17th, 2010
VOIVOD Members Contribute to 'MEAN DEVIATION: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal'

VOIVOD Members Contribute to 'MEAN DEVIATION: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal'

Bazillion Points Books is proud to announce the late 2010 release of ‘MEAN DEVIATION: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal’, by Jeff Wagner-a former editor of Metal Maniacs magazine and veteran supporter of metal’s most risk-taking bands. Wagner analyzes the heady side of metal in this exhaustive history of a relentlessly ambitious musical subculture. The book features extensive original artwork throughout by VOIVOD drummer Michel “Away” Langevin, including the lavish front cover which can be viewed at this location:

The book’s foreword was penned by PORCUPINE TREE founder Steven Wilson. Revered in progressive rock circles, the multi-talented Wilson is also highly respected by metalheads as producer of three landmark Opeth albums. As he writes: “In Jeff Wagner’s MEAN DEVIATION, we now have a definitive book on the relationship between metal and progressive music, and the myriad variation of styles that it has given rise to…In the meantime, metal continues to mutate and evolve, sometimes in the most unexpected ways, demonstrating that it is far from spent and is, in fact, the most flexible of musical forms.”

Beginning with 1970s progressive rock acts Rush and King Crimson, MEAN DEVIATION unfurls a colorful tapestry of sounds and styles, from the “Big Three” of 1980s prog metal-Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, and Dream Theater-to extreme pioneers Voivod, Watchtower, and Arcturus. As sparks of inspiration spread to obscure outposts in Scandinavia, Florida, and Japan, progressive metal burst into full creative flame with the successes of prog metal overlords Opeth, Meshuggah, Tool, Between the Buried and Me, and many others.

“One thing prog metal certainly is, is metal,” Wagner continues. “Hard and bold and brash, but refined, adulterated, and mutated. Progressive metal is heavy metal taken somewhere illuminating and sometimes bizarre.”

Weighing in at 400 pages, the heavily-illustrated book includes a 16-page color photo insert, a constellation of appendixes, and a full index. For more information, and to preorder, visit:

VoiVod – Live In Montreal, Canada

Live Review and pics by Geneviève Hamel

VoiVod live in Montreal

10 years! That’s what it took to Voïvod to play a headlining concert again in their adoptive hometown of Montreal! That’s quite long but it’s not that unusual in this case, the new momentum achieved by the return of long-departed singer “Snake” to the fold at the beginning of this decade was stopped by the premature death of founding member and riff-master “Piggy” in 2005.

Jalometalli 2009

October 20th, 2009

The Jalometalli Open Air Metal festival has gained its status as well as place on the Finnish festival map. Although there are plenty of metal oriented festivals arranged all around in Finland, the Jalometalli festival has found its own style and approach in the metal festival offering in Finland. It doesn’t rely on the current hot names on the market like Volbeat and so on, instead the festival offers a more interesting line-up mostly consisting of old school thrash metal and of course death and black metal by having bands which have either never or rarely visited Finland. Especially several 80s thrash metal legends such as Whiplash, Agent Steel have never been seen on the soil of Finland. Now it is about time. Therefore the team made a real assault at Jalometalli by witnessing plenty of killer bands and seeing the general atmosphere and here is the result.
