Hellfest Festival 2013

@ Clisson, France

21st– 23rd June 2013

Review by Kirsty Birkett-Stubbs
Photography by Tess Donohoe  Hellfest

It may be some people’s epitome of hell, Michael Buble fans I’m looking at you, but for the metal/rock community Hellfest’s towering gateway looks positively pearly. This year’s line-up is so jam-packed that I was looking for the little glass jars and labels. You’d make a fortune if you could bottle any number of the diverse scope of bands on the bill, with the riffs left in natch, but I’d like them to play their sets first.

Once inside that gateway the layout is much the same as last year, and that isn’t meant in a well-they-clearly-couldn’t-be-arsed sense, because Hellfest could teach most others a thing or 20 on how to put together a fan-friendly festival. Except when it comes to the number of toilets on site that is.

Whilst the Hellfest tree still dominates in its stark simplicity, the hidden beer gardens have gained a snazzy gateway of their own, which invites you into the woodlands. Instead of a fairytale monster at the end of the path though, you’ll find a winebar, which is win-win really. And at night the scrap-metal merch stands and bars still glow with their own rooftop fires.

Stage-wise we’ve got Main Stage 1 and 2, which continue their staggered times so that as one plays, the other sets up, and vice versa. The result is no waiting around for soundchecks or bands to start, just back-to-back bam-bam-bam metal. A similar set-up is in place at the Altar and the Temple, where you can find black metal, death metal and the like, then there’s the Valley which is home to the stoner and doom types, and the Warzone where the punk and hardcore drops.

Hellfest 2013 – it’s like being welcomed home.

Sci-Fi Thrash Demons VEKTOR Announce Massive US Tour

July 25th, 2012

The future of thrash is here – and it’s coming straight for your throat!

Sci-fi thrash overlords VEKTOR have announced dates for a North American campaign later this summer. Formed in 2002 and currently based in Philadelphia, PA after packing up and heading east from their Phoenix, AZ hometown, this young but deadly quartet have already received heaps of praise and admiration for their head-spinning, technically-demanding, space-age thrash metal assault. Their insanely unique mega-thrash compositions portray the future as a bleak, barren wasteland that has been destroyed by greed, power, corruption, hate, violence, ignorance, and control – a questioning of existence, reality, minds, and souls. The future is black.

After self-releasing the Demolition demo in 2006 and Hunger For Violence the next year, as well as a slew of regional performances (often alongside the likes of TESTAMENT, HIRAX, ICED EARTH, and MUNICIPAL WASTE), VEKTOR unleashed their debut LP, Black Future, and hit the road with Heavy Artillery labelmates EXMORTUS. 2011 saw their return to wax – and to the open road- as the critically acclaimed Outer Isolation record dropped like a neutron bomb. As NPR noted, “VEKTOR finds a way to embrace the past while also carving out an original niche: The young Arizona band combines thrash with elements of black metal and progressive rock. The resulting blend is fast, detailed, incredibly melodic and unexpectedly inventive…The band’s music never comes across as difficult, but it maintains a high level of skill throughout. That’s not an easy card to play, but it’s one of many challenges VEKTOR conquers on its way to updating the thrash-metal blueprint.”

Metal Review raved, “The amount of strengths fighting for the Outer Isolation spotlight are actually a bit staggering when sponged up entirely in one sitting! This band’s speedy execution is ridiculously precise — stormily accurate jackhammer drumming bounces off the reactor walls alongside perfectly matched nuclear riffing with explosive results…Vektor is much more than a new band simply paying homage to legends past; these guys have taken what can be learned from the originators and are using it to blaze a new path, and Outer Isolation is bulldozing the trail, while Sputnik Music decreed that their most recent release “is a more-than-worthy addition to Vektor’s impressive catalogue, and cements the band’s place at the forefront of the thrash revival.”

VEKTOR are coming. To resist is to be destroyed!

Arriving just in time to seal its rightful position atop many a top-ten album list for 2011, Outer Isolation did what few thought was possible when it met and exceeded the high expectations set by its predecessor. Those yet initiated can stream the entire album for free at:

The futuristic force known as VEKTOR sent shockwaves throughout the metal world with their 2009 debut album Black Future, establishing themselves as pioneers in a genre thought by many to be exhausted of new ideas. What started as a quiet buzz quickly grew to a deafening roar; rave reviews from the press and scores of comments from fans in hundreds of blogs, news sites and message boards around the world tell the story of a band who had seemingly come out of nowhere to challenge the self-imposed limitations of the metal genre. Conceived in 2004 by front man / guitarist David DiSanto and lead shredder Erik Nelson, VEKTOR quickly forged a formidable name for themselves amongst the Arizona metal contingent for their unique mix of technical, speed, thrash and progressive influences. Having set such a high standard for themselves with Black Future, VEKTOR pulled up their sleeves to meet the challenge and begin recording their sophomore album Outer Isolation in June 2011. The album hit store shelves in the US on December 6th to much fanfare. With their sights set at galactic conquest, VEKTOR employs an arsenal with an array of intricacy, virtuosity and a wholly unique sound which few of their peers can claim.
