REVIEW AND PHOTOS BY MARKO SYRJALA

The British rock legends UFO are no strangers in Finland. In fact, the band has visited Finland a few times and they have a solid fan base in here. Although there are only two remaining members left from the bands “golden era”, vocalist Phil Mogg and drummer Andy Parker, UFO has still managed to put out several decent albums during the past few years. YOU ARE HERE (2003) was the first release featuring Vinnie Moore on guitar and later on they have put out THE MONKEY PUZZLE (2006), THE VISITOR (2009) and the latest opus SEVEN DEADLY which came out in early 2013. However, it’s time to check out if UFO is still flying on 2014.

UFO

Springfield VA

October 12, 2013

UFO performed at Empire, in Springfield, Virginia, US on October 12, 2013.   An intimate setting, Empire’s capacity is only 500 and is buried in strip mall.  Consider this an excellent opportunity to get up close to some big name acts.

The opening acts consisted of entertaining, if not unconventional music.

INTERVIEW BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

UFO are a legendary English band who were originally formed 1989, They’ve often been mentioned as one of the most important hard rock bands of all time. Their classic lineup: vocalist Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way, drummer Andy Parker, keyboardist/guitarist Paul Raymond and Michael Schenker released a bunch of classics like : LIGHTS OUT, OBSESSION and a live album STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT in the 70’s. The band enjoyed worldwide success with songs “Doctor Doctor”, “Love To Love” and “Only You Can Rock Me” and even the departure with Schenker in 1978 couldn’t stop their triumphal. New guitarist Paul Chapman stepped in and then renewed band released another string of albums. NO PLACE TO RUN, THE WILD WILLING AND THE INNOCENT and MECHANIX were strong albums but as time went by the band started slowly to fall apart and finally decided to call it quits in late 80’s with Mogg being the only remaining member from the original line up. The whole classic line up returned together in the early 90’s and as a result WALK ON WATER was released in 1995. Unfortunately that reunion didn’t last long when Parker first left from the group and so did Schenker just two albums later.  The band went on hiatus again. In 2004 it was announced that the band would return with a brand new and line up including Mogg, Way, Raymond and newcomers drummer Jason Bonham and guitarist Vinnie Moore.  The new line up released the albums YOU ARE HERE and a live album SHOWTIME before Bonham quit and joined another legendary band – Foreigner. Parker returned to the fold on 2006’s MONKEY PUZZLE and has stayed in the band since then. Another line-up change happened in the spring of 2009 when Way was forced to leave the band for serious health reasons. The band’s latest album VISITOR was released in the summer of 2009 and since then they have been on tour around the world. The Visitor world tour finally reached Finland in November 2010. Originally there were two shows booked, one in Helsinki and another in Tampere, but unfortunately the band was forced to pull out of the Helsinki show when Mogg suddenly fell ill with a bad cold. We had a chance to catch Andy and Vinnie after the Tampere show and here’s some of the latest info from the men themselves. Read on!

MICHAEL SCHENKER

MICHAEL SCHENKER

INTERVIEW AND LIVE PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

German born guitarist Michael Schenker is one most inspirational and respected guitar players from the 1970’s. Michael started his career in early 1970’s being one of the founding members of The Scorpions. With the Scorpions he recorded their debut LONESOME CROW in 1972. In 1974 Michael was asked and joined the U.K. band UFO. The classic UFO line-up of: Phil Mogg, Pete Way, Andy Parker and Michael Schenker released a string of highly successful albums like: PHENOMENON, FORCE IT, NO HEAVY PETTING and LIGHT’S OUT before Michael decided to leave band in 1978. Michael was next offered gigs with such bands as Aerosmith and Ozzy Osbourne, but excluding a brief reunion with THE SCORPIONS, he decided that he wanted to play his own music and not be a hired gun in another group. MSG (Michael Schenker Group) was thus formed in 1979. The band’s self titled debut was released 1980 and it became an instant success. The history of the Michael Schenker Group has been strewn with personality conflicts and “incidents” between band members. In 1982, original vocalist Gary Barden was fired in favor of Graham Bonnet (Rainbow, Alcatrazz) who lasted for one album (ASSAULT ATTACK). Gary Barden was enticed back to the band for M.S.G. for the recording of a new studio album BUILT TO DESTROY and a live album ROCK WILL NEVER DIE. After the second departure of vocalist Gary Barden, Michael reorganized the band around himself and vocalist Robin McAuley under the name McAuley Schenker Group. After three albums Michael and Robin parted their company in 1992.The classic UFO line–up resurrected in 1995 and WALK ON WATER was released later on that year. Although the band managed to release two more albums in the following years, Schenker finally quit the band in 2002. Since then, Michael has released a bunch albums with different versions of M.S.G and toured around the U.S., Europe and Japan. 2005 was the 25’Th Anniversary of Michael Schenker Group and album TALES OF ROCK’N ROLL. Singers from each incarnation of the group were enlisted to sing on a track or two. That album did lead Gary Barden and Michael to rejoin their forces and as a result MSG released its finest work in decades called THE MIDST OF BEAUTY in 2008. In December of 2009 band finally arrived to Helsinki to play their first show ever in Finland. In Helsinki, we had a chance to sit down with Michael….and here are the results of that interesting chat. Read on!!!

UFO – drummer Andy Parker

August 19th, 2009

ANDY PARKER

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the classic UK rock band UFO. Still featured in the ranks are two founding members, vocalist (and the only constant in the bands event rich history) Phil Mogg and drummer Andy Parker. For the past few years the lineup has in addition consisted of two other members of the bands perhaps best loved (”Lights Out”) incarnation, namely bassist Pete Way and keyboardist Paul Raymond, with Vinnie Moore on guitar since 2005 who is filling the shoes of the mad axe man Michael Schenker. UFO’s newest record entitled THE VISITOR is their 20th studio album and the first one since 1988’s AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ without the wild man Pete Way on board. Filling in on bass for the album is Peter Pichl, and on this summer’s tour, Barry Sparks. For this interview we sat down with Andy Parker to learn more, not just about Pete’s predicament, but many other things relating to the past, present and future of UFO.

PETE WAY

INTERVIEW BY MARKO SYRJALA

The legendary British band, UFO, first reaped moderate success with their space rock in the early 70’s. This was before they had introduced Michael Shenker into their ranks. They finally hit it big with their PHENOMENON (1974) album. Their fortunes continued to ascend with FORCE IT (1975), NO HEAVY PETTING (1976), LIGHTS OUT (1977) and OBSESSIONS (1978) albums and the accompanied tours that followed, before finally climaxing with the lauded double live album STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT (1979). As the 70s drew to a close, the story of UFO was far from over. Many incarnations, detours, and distractions later, UFO remain to this day a force to be reckoned with both live and, as their new album THE MONKEY PUZZLE (2006) proves, in the studio as well. We managed to catch Pete Way last month in Copenhagen prior to the UFO show in Pumpehuset and here are the results of our interesting discussion. In this interview, Pete recounts some highs and lows from his whole career, including Fastway, Ozzy Osbourne, Waysted, Damage Control and of course UFO.
