DIRKSCHNEIDER & ANVIL : Live at Tavastia, Helsinki, FINLAND

March 8th, 2016

with support band ANVIL

The 1st of March 2016

Tavastia, Helsinki, Finland

“Balls To The Wall”, “Metal Heart” and a great number of other Accept classic ones have been the most important part of Udo Dirkschneider’s career, life and DNA since year zero. Especially those 80’s metal hymns have belonged to the youth of every teenager’s life back in the day. Even though the German metal icon has done those Accept evergreen on his long solo career until now, when he announced about closing the chapter of the Accept years by doing the specific tour under the Dirkschneider moniker. Back To The Roots/Farewell To Accept had been aimed high to cover nothing, but the Accept songs from the 80’s. Before Udo hit the stage smash the balls to the wall for the last time ever, the Canadian threesome Anvil had obtained the opening slot. The Tavastia club was totally packed, the gig was sold out a long time ago. Obviously the Accept nostalgia trip reached these 80’s heavy metal teenagers who had aged quite a lot. Seeing the younger generation in the middle aged crowd was quite rare.

Although the legendary Anvil DVD saw the light of day years ago, the band got the well deserved hype to boost the career to survive, but yet the hype still goes on. Frankly good for them, the 60 year old men got the one last chance to enjoy a bit of some kind of success before it was too late. However Lips appears to be a young naïve teenage hippie kid from the suburban area of Toronto, smoking weed and playing rock’n’roll. However Anvil’s simple and tongue-in-cheek mentality with the serious attitude is bloody cute and endearing in a way. Anvil is Anvil, no doubt about that. The songs off from METAL ON METAL played the major role in the set such as “666”, “March Of The Crabs” and of course “Metal On Metal” concluding the 60 minute set. As for the latest album being played a few songs for example “Die For A Lie” and “Zombie Apocalypse”. However that kind of simple metal seems to appeal to the certain group of the hard core metal fans for sure. Anvil is and presents a bit of comical as well as unintended humoristic aspects. The Canucks pounded and forged the metallic anvil for about one hour and left the stage with the overexcite crowd chanting Anvil, Anvil for a long time.

All right as stated earlier this is supposed to be Udo Dirkschneider’s farewell tour to his Accept era. The tour is massive and it seems like the demand has been incredible, because some festival has booked Dirkscheider. However the U.D.O moniker is on hiatus for the time being. Udo with the back-up band did the 120 minute set of several Accept songs. The packed club went entirely bezerk when the riff of “Starlight” cut the air and followed by all in all 23 Accept songs in a row. All of them had been picked up from the 80’s albums. Unfortunately the 90’s albums had been skipped completely and so was the Accept debut.  It obvious why Udo concentrated on the well-known classics instead but it would have been great to hear at least a couple of tracks from the bands excellent re-union album at the time OBJECTION OVERRULED (1993). In fact the band then played a sold out show in this same venue and for sure there were many fans now present who witnessed that show.  The album tracks “Objection Overruled”, “Slaves To Metal”, “Bulletproof” or “Protectors Of Terror” could all have been great additions on the set list.  The sounds were excellent. Well as for the band in general, they did a solid work and did the justified work for the old classic material. But Accept is Accept with the full metal heart, therefore comparing the back-up band of Dirkschneider for them is pointless and beyond the absurd. However the guitar duet appeared to be enjoying being at the stage. Even though the most ultimate passion and fire have gone a bit down for Udo to perform the immortal metal hymns, but the metal legend performed all of those songs with the professional attitude and proud for sure. At least this is supposed to be the last time to hear classics like “Breaker”, “Princess of the Dawn” and “London Leatherboys” sung by Udo on the Finnish soil.

It remains to be seen if Udo truly leaves the Accept material out from his U.D.O gigs in the future. To be honest the 80’s metal fans are desperately eager to hear those Accept classic stuff, therefore it is going to be quite interesting how this decision will effect on the ticket selling in the future.

Wacken Open Air 2015

September 29th, 2015

Wacken being sold out is a kind of mystery, for sure. The event is somehow sold out every year, but this year’s sell out wasn’t a surprise as Savatage with Trans Siberian Orchestra and Judas Priest were headliners. Thousands and thousands of metal fans from every corner of the world arrived at Wacken to have fun and enjoy metal. Instead the weather gods didn’t show much support towards the festival and all its visitors. The hard rains literally ruined the ground and soil of the festival area. The whole Wacken village and large area of fields became the ultimate mud war field. The weekend at Wacken was one hell of a surviving camp.

Despite the tremendous problems and brutal field of mud, the people still gathered to witness the return and resurrection of Savatage and the massive show from Trans Siberian Orchestra.

ACCEPT – Guitarist Wolf Hoffmann

October 25th, 2014

German metal legends Accept are no strangers in We’ve always been extremely supportive for the band and we’ve had numerous articles and interviews released during the past years and here’s another one for you to read. The band released their latest opus BLIND RAGE in August. The critically acclaimed album debuted at number one on the German charts, making it the band’s first number one debut in their career and it’s seen great success all around the world. Accept opened the “Blind Rage” tour in Sweden in late September. A few days later I met the band’s founding member and guitarist Wolf Hoffmann in Tornio prior their second show in Finland. It’s time to talk, again, with Wolf about current things and dig into the past a bit as well. Read on!

U.D.O. Live at Club Nosturi, Helsinki

November 10th, 2013

October 5’TH 2013

German metal band U.D.O., led by former Accept vocalist Udo Dirkschneider, have been regular visitors in Finland during the past years. The band released its 14th studio album STEELHAMMER on last May and it also introduced U.D.O.’s renewed line-up including Udo, longtime members: bassist Fitty and drummer Francisco Jovino, and new guitarist duo Kasper Heikkinen and Andrey Smirnow. It seems that U.D.O. is still enjoying such a strong success in Finland as they now played in front of a practically sold out Club Nosturi in Helsinki.

ACCEPT – Wolf Hoffman and Mark Tornillo

June 3rd, 2010

Transcription by M H aka Psychophobe

Accept, the legendary heavy metal band out of Germany, conquered the metal world back in the 80’s with thunderous classic catchy songs such as RESTLESS AND WILD, BALLS TO THE WALL, BREAKER, METAL HEART, and the list continues. The legendary five piece made a triumphant return to the limelight in 2005, crisscrossing European metal and rock festivals and received excited reception from metal fans. However, things within the band didn’t work out and the band went on hiatus. Finally Accept got back together, but without vocalist Udo Dirkschneider. The former TT Quick frontman Mark Tornillo stepped in to take over on vocals. Original members Wolf Hoffman and Peter Baltes had plenty of new strong sounding Accept material written and the new album BLOOD OF THE NATIONS was recorded during last year at the helm of Andy Sneap who had a strong input on new songs and album. The whole band was on a promotion trip and doing some shows here and there. Metal-Rules.Com got an excellent opportunity hear the new album and then hav a chat with Wolf Hoffman and the new singer  Mark Tornillo.
