Finnish folk metallers Turisas invite you once again to stand up and fight with them once again. Never too long from British soil, this band have always been able to pull a crowd, and entering the venue, I can see that this was going to be no exception. As usual the room is awash with red and black stripes painted like battle lines across faces, proudly proclaiming their allegiance for the night.

TURISAS release “Into The Free” from new album ‘Turisas2013′

July 18th, 2013

TURISAS

With the September 3 release of their new album ‘Turisas2013′ rapidly approaching, TURISAS are proud to unveil a second track from the album, the adrenalized anthem “Into The Free” – click here to listen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-FQCokApVE.

Says TURISAS violinist Olli Vanska of the track: “‘Into The Free’ shows a completely different side of the new album: it’s fast, uplifting, raw and contains some super catchy sing-along parts. We already played this ‘freedom anthem’ on a couple of summer festivals and the reception was really good right from the start. As an instant crowd mover, I believe the song has already earned its place in the setlist of the upcoming tours.”

TURISAS – Comments on Current Tour

February 1st, 2013
Turisas - 2013 concert poster

Turisas – 2013 concert poster

In a recent interview with Turisas violinist Olli Vänskä, Olli talked about the tour and the timing of the tour before the release of their new album:

What was the thinking behind doing the tour now, instead of waiting a couple months when the album release was closer?

We knew that we were going to release the album this spring and there was a gap where we knew we could do a U.S. tour. Earlier years we were really bad about scheduling things in a smart way. We’ve had like one year between tours in the U.S. and we know how important it is to be there. We thought that we’d do some groundwork for the actual album release tour and a little bit of testing the waters to be able to reap whatever we sowed last year on Paganfest, which was really good and I’m glad it went well. We thought that this was a good place to return.

We will be doing some shows here and there in Europe as well and going to Israel for the first time and doing a festival in Belgium or something like that and then have the album release in May and do the summer festivals and then probably come back to tour in the states next fall. So it’s all part of a master plan.

It’s definitely a good way to remind folks you’re still around, people’s attention spans being what they are these days.

Absolutely. That was kind of the main idea behind it. We wanted to step up the pace with the album, the last two coming three years after the one before it, and you know how the industry is these days. But even though it’s only been two years since Stand Up And Fight, we don’t see that we are rushing anything.

We are just trying to keep the heat that we’ve already built so we don’t have to start back at the level we began at when the last album came out. You want start where you finished off, so yeah, we want to get the name out there and get people excited about the new album before it comes out.

This bill is a bit different that what you’ve come over with before – last time with Paganfest, before that more of a black metal thing with Cradle of Filth and Nachtmystium. This one is a real mixed bag of styles.

Paganfest was great, but that folk/Viking/Pagan/whatever shit – not shit, that’s the wrong word, but you know what I mean, there’s just so many genres there – everything that comes from Finland people just brand as folk metal, so that’s established, even if it’s not entirely accurate. The idea for this was to broaden the scope of the whole horizon in a way that shows there’s something more to what we do and get away from the idea that if you’re a folk metal band you should only tour with folk metal bands or if you’re a death metal band you should only tour with death metal bands.

As long as there is some kind of touching point between the bands and people can feel that there is something interesting there, it should work. If we went out with some really technical math-metal band, it might be a bit weird, but Firewind is kind of traditional power metal that is very anthemic, which much of our music is. And Stolen Babies are bit avant garde, they have a folk side to them. So there is some common ground there.

I think the variety of the bill is not a weakness, it’s a good thing. There are these insane package shows that have like five death metal bands in a row, each one more brutal than the rest.

TURISAS – Interview with violinist Olli Vänskä

By Peter Atkinson

Turisas violinist Olli Vänskä is a bit out frazzled and all apologies as he calls in from the studio in Helsinki, Finland, where the “battle metal” horde are rushing to finish work on their as-yet-untitled fourth album.

“I am calling late,” he says. “I had two interviews today. One of them I nailed right on time, this one I didn’t. I’m so sorry man. It’s a little crazy here.” Read the rest of this entry »

TURISAS enters studio to record new album; announces line-up change

November 22nd, 2012

Battle metallers TURISAS have officially started recording their upcoming 4th studio album. The band is currently recording drums at Atomic Spa studio in Helsinki, Finland, and they will continue the recordings in different locations until the end of January. This follow-up to 2011′s Stand Up And Fight is scheduled for a worldwide release in May 2013 via Century Media Records.

TURISAS has also announced a few line-up changes in conjunction with the band entering the studio. After spending 15 years with TURISAS behind the kit, original member, Tuomas “Tude” Lehtonen, has decided to part ways with the band. Lehtonen explains the reasons behind his decision:

“I can’t tell you how hard it feels to step away from the path we’ve been walking together for the last 15 years – and to start a new era in my life without the band. There are many reasons for me to quit the band. The stress from the years spent on the road and different artistic visions have lead to a mutual decision for me to step back and hand over the drumsticks to the next guy. In any case, it has been a great experience and all the memories from being on the road are something that I will always cherish. The biggest thanks go to all of the past and present members of the band, not to forget all the technicians and fellow drummers I’ve met on shows and on tour – and, of course, especially to all the fans that have allowed us to grow to the level that TURISAS are at today. Good luck and lots of success to all my bandmates – I feel that I will never be straying too far away from the band. I shall always be proudly carrying the heart of TURISAS wherever I go. The man can leave the band but the band will never really leave the man. Battle Metal!”

Along with Lehtonen, TURISAS’ current tour bass player, Jukka-Pekka Miettinen, will part ways with the band as he needs to focus on his own musical projects. The relationship with both members remains friendly and amicable. Their official farewell party will happen at TURISAS’ special New Year’s Eve show on December 31st, 2012 at Nosturi in Helsinki, Finland.

In light of Lehtonen’s and Miettinen’s departure, TURISAS is proud to welcome two new members to the band: their new drummer, Jaakko Jakku, who has already started recording his drum parts for the upcoming album, and their new bassist, Jesper Anastasiadis. Both are excellent musicians with great personalities, and the rest of the band is already looking forward to the upcoming shows.

After the new album is finished at the end of January, TURISAS will appear on the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise (http://70000tons.com/), which kicks off on January 28th in Florida; then they’ll head out on their headlining “Guards Of Glory” tour throughout North America and Latin America. Support in North America will come from FIREWIND, as well as STOLEN BABIES. See below for a list of tour dates (with more to be announced soon!):

Finnish Metal Expo 2012

March 31st, 2012

The Finnish Metal Expo has become more an indoor metal festival in the heart of the Finnish nuclear winter. The line-up of the FME 2012 offered a great and wide deal of metal from the extreme to the more AOR based approach. Even though the whole idea of the metal expedition has dried out within these years, instead bands seem to draw more interest. Nearly 4000 metal worshippers have crawled thru the wintery Helsinki to attend the Finnish Metal Expo. Here is the brief article with a lot of great pictures from The Finnish Metal Expo.

TURISAS to headline Guitar World, Full Metal Jackie, and Metal Injection present: “PaganFest: America Part III”; EX DEO drops off tour

February 14th, 2012

Battle metallers TURISAS will be heading back to North America this spring for Guitar World, Full Metal Jackie, and Metal Injection present: “PaganFest: America Part III”, their first-ever US headlining run! Joining the Finnish sextet on their triumphant return to the States is a gathering of bands from across the world: Scotland’s ALESTORM, Russia’s ARKONA, and the US’s very own HUNTRESS (Rome’s EX DEO has now dropped-off the tour). In regards to their departure from PaganFest, EX DEO’s Maurizio Iacono comments:

“It is with deep disappointment that I am obliged to pull EX DEO off this year’s PaganFest. We were all excited to play this festival and premier some new material, but unfortunately our new album ‘Caligvla’ has been delayed, and we need to finish it and make it perfect. Add to that, the KATAKLYSM DVD is also on its final production phase…We decided it would be best to concentrate on giving every bit of attention to the album you have been waiting for, and also for the KATAKLYSM documentary to kick major ass.”

“This being said, we will still perform with EX DEO on the Montreal & Toronto shows with PaganFest, as we will be in studio in the area, closing up the album ‘Caligvla’. Everything else is cancelled for EX DEO. We will return to support the album in the fall…”

“Word from Rome is that the plans are already in motion for world conquest! We ask our fans to support PaganFest and the great bands playing this year!”

In conjunction with Guitar World, Full Metal Jackie, and Metal Injection, exclusive PaganFest contests and behind-the-scenes content from all the bands on this epic bill will be launched in the coming weeks, so stay tuned! Special VIP ticket packages are also available here for diehard TURISAS fans– be sure to order yours while you still can! In regards to this upcoming tour, TURISAS front-man Mathias Nygard comments:  “It took time, but finally we had a chance to make it back to North America. After many successful tours there with acts like CRADLE OF FILTH and DRAGONFORCE during the past few years, it’s great to return as a headliner. This is a killer combo with great variety– some of the most twisted acts of the folkier side of metal!  Be prepared for a great night out– I expect to witness some crazy audiences!”

DAMNATION FESTIVAL 2011

Damnation Festival 2011

Saturday 5th November 11

Review by Wolf Shankland

Photography by Andrew McHardy

Leeds has always been seen as one of the most alternative places in the UK, but once a year; on the first Saturday of November, it’s metalled up to the max! And this year was no different!!

If you live in Leeds or the surrounding areas and you listen to the most brutal metal around and didn’t go to this festival, THEN…SHAME ON YOU!!

TURISAS announce line-up changes

September 8th, 2011

Now the European summer festival season is finally wrapped up, and with extensive Heidenfest and headline touring looming for the autumn, we come to the start of a new chapter in TURISAS’ history.

TURISAS are delighted to announce that Jukka-Pekka Miettinen (ex- ARTHEMESIA, ENSIFERUM) will be joining the band on bass for forthcoming shows, and Robert Engstrand (ex-KOTIPELTO, THE FLOWER KINGS) will be coming into a completely new role in the band – as keyboard player.

Jukka-Pekka Miettinen

Robert Engstrand
Robert Engstrand, pic © Jussi Eerola www.jussieerola.com.

This change is in response to the sad news that current bassist Hannes Horma and accordionist Netta Skog have decided to leave the band due to personal and motivational reasons.

This announcement will NOT affect Turisas’ tours this fall in any way: the band will perform as advertised at this year’s Heidenfest tour in Europe, and afterwards will do a full length headlining tour in the UK, Ireland, Spain and Portugal. (see the tour schedule at http://www.turisas.com/live or at the end of the newspiece)

The band comments:

”A band is not something that can be kept together by force. If someone wants to quit, there’s not much the rest of us can do about that. Both for Hannes and Netta it came down to the same thing: a choice between the band and other personal interests had to be made. We tried to find a compromise where both could be combined, but unfortunately in both cases it didn’t seem possible at their end. Neither Hannes or Netta played a critical role in the creative process and studio work of the band, so in this sense not much will change. Still, they were always great onstage and we shared many memorable moments together.

We would like to make it very clear that there is no drama here, and thankfully no hard feelings. Both Hannes and Netta made their decisions completely independently, based on their own personal reasons. Their departures are not connected in any way, it was just that this short quiet period between the Euro festivals and the forthcoming touring was the only meaningful time to make a smooth changeover to the new members.

We’d like to thank Hannes and Netta for all the good times we had together over the years, and wish them both the best of luck in the future.

As far as Jukka-Pekka and Robert go, these guys are both very talented musicians, and we are very excited about hitting the road with this new lineup. Please welcome our newest reinforcements – this is the beginning of a new era!”

-Mathias, Jussi, Tude and Olli

***

Hannes Horma joined the band on bass right after the release of the debut “Battle Metal” in 2004. He says:

“My career with the band started 2004 – at the time I was only nineteen years old. It felt like a dream come true and since then, we’ve had some amazing time and unbelievable shows during these years.
For the past couple of years I’ve been studying orchestral composing, arranging and classical singing and with the touring responsibilities, I haven’t had a lot of free time and couldn’t pursue my other interests. Lately, I’ve also felt that the “flame” is not there any more for me personally: it was time for me to move on to do the things I feel most passionate about. I love playing concerts with Turisas but I cannot be on tour for 6 or more months a year and try to study at the same time – no one can.
I would like to thank everybody I’ve met during the years, all the fans around the world, the bands we’re toured with and our crew – you rock! I also hope all the best for everybody in Turisas: thanks for letting me to be a part of this for all these years.

It’s been a hell of a ride but now it’s my time to jump off. Hopefully we’ll meet again, someday, somewhere.”
-Hannes

Netta Skog has been with the band since 2008 (the previous accordion player Lisko having disappeared whilst on tour in Amsterdam). Skog was only 16 years old when she first joined the band as a last minute stand-in player for a European tour in 2007, subsequently becoming a full-time member. Earlier this year, she was forced to leave the band’s U.S. tour because of personal issues, but returned for summer festivals. She says:

”I sadly announce that now is the time when I have to say goodbye to Turisas. I’m going to start my studies in college soon and also need to focus on my personal life; thus, I had to make the decision and this is the final result.

These almost four years with the band have been amazing. I’ve got a lot of new friends and seen the world all around. I’m so lucky I was the one the band wanted to have as their accordion player and there are definitely no regrets. All the good memories will stay in my heart forever! Of course, It’s sad to leave but still, I have to think that this band was one chapter in my life, and now it’s time for me to turn the next page.

I’m more than thankful to all of you for your amazing support and just for being amazing fans! I’ve had so much fun and I will never forget you.
Thank you for everything.”

-Netta
