Tuska Open Air Metal Festival 2005 – Helsinki Finland

August 28th, 2005

The Central Park Of Kaisaniemi ? Helsinki ? Finland
15th ? 17th of July 2005

Pics and reviews by Metal-Rules.com team Finland

What happens in the middle of July in the central park of the summer city of Helsinki every year? Well, what a easy question, the annual Tuska Open Air Metal festival takes place every year at that time. It pulls in over 33.000 metal hearts of all ages and all kinds of persons to spend an unforgettable metallic feast in the heart of Helsinki. As it is said The Gods made heavy metal which has turned out be nothing but right in every aspect as the weather was extremely warm and hot during the whole weekend apart from a few darker clouds having gathered around the area when Dimmu Borgir stepped on the stage and in general the atmosphere was peaceful and bigger problems managed to be avoided, thanks to the common metal spirit of the Finnish die hard metal freaks.

The bill of 2005 didn?t offer any offer so-called any big selling names like Nightwish being one of the headlining acts at Tuska last year, but instead a variety of different metal genres were at present ranging from a hyper-blasting grindcore to a more melancholic Finnish mainstream rock. Having a large range of metal proves Tuska is not limited to one certain metal category as everyone had something to feel, taste and see during the three long days.

The Tuska Open Air festival has reached and gained a lot of positive attention amongst the metal people around the world. There were people having arrived from Russia, Estonia, Sweden, all around Europe and even from some Far East countries. Despite not having a big name, the metal festival was totally sold out and even a few hundred leftover tickets for Friday were sold after all.

As usual it has turned out to be an annual mandatory tradition for having an article of the Tuska festival in Metal-Rules.Com, therefore the Finnish Metal-Rules.Com pain squad spent the whole weekend testifying several acts in action and tried to feel the spirit of Heavy Metal and enjoy the pleasure of the flesh as well during the three insane long days in the beautiful central park of Kaisaniemi and in the heart of Helsinki with several friends as well as everlasting enemies. Enjoy?

Glen Alvelais – ex-Forbidden, ex-Testament, LD/50

August 28th, 2005

Interview with Glen Alvelais (ex-Forbidden, ex-Testament, currently in LD/50)

Interviewed in Sept. 2000 by EvilG

Forbidden’s first two studio albums – Forbidden Evil and Twisted Into Form REALLY do something for me. Forbidden have to be one of the more under-rated of the bay area thrash bands to have existed. Critics seem to leave Forbidden out of things and concentrate on other bands when referring to the bay area thrash scene. If you ask me, I think that Forbidden are simply amazing! One of the guitarists, who was a part of Forbidden for their first album and their live EP – Raw Evil Live At The Dynamo is Glen Alvelais. I was thrilled to get he opportunity to pose the following questions to him.

James Murphy
Interviewed in Jan. 1997 by EvilG

Testament update January 1997:
The news about Testament seems to be changing quickly. First the band broke up. James Murphy went off to release his new CD “Convergences” and Chuck Billy and Eric Peterson stuck it out. They went by the name ”Dog Faced Gods” and on drums was former Machine Head member Chris Kontos. Chris has since left and Chuck and Eric have decided to stick with the Testament name. Lets hope they get a band together SOON and continue in the same vein as LOW.

Well here some new info on what James Murphy has been up to and the news from the Testament camp.

Alex Skolnick

August 21st, 2005

Alex Skolnick
Interviewed on January 27, 1998 by EvilG

As most already know Alex was lead guitarist for Testament from 1987’s ‘The Legacy’ until 1992’s ‘The Ritual.’ During this period Alex was an inspiration to many a guitar player. His technical ability was without question amazing. Reports said that Alex had tired of Testament’s musical direction. According to the band, when Alex left they felt as if a weight had been taken off of their shoulders for now they could pursue much heavier music.

Following Alex’s departure he joined Savatage and appeared on their CD “Handful of Rain” and a live EP. Concurrently he was part of a jazz/rock project with bass soloist Stuart Hamm. This takes us up until the mid-nineties.

So where has Alex been? Fortunately I was given the opportunity to get an update from Alex himself on his years with Testament and his new project Skol-Patrol…here it is, enjoy.

Interview With Gene Hoglan

Gene Hoglan

In a career that has spanned over twenty years, legendary drummer Gene Hoglan is a true pioneer of the heavy metal plains.  Dark Angel, Testament, Death, Strapping Young Lad?with jobs like this on his resume, chances are you have heard the bludgeoning skinsmanship of Hoglan.  Besides the big-name bands, Hoglan also dabbles in several side projects?both metal and non-metal?which allow him to branch out and explore the many facets of drumming.  Hoglan?s involvement with Devin Townsend both in his solo work and in Strapping Young Lad has been a relationship coming up on ten years with no signs of slowing down.

Strapping Young Lad unleashed their latest sonic assault, entitled ALIEN, back in March and I got the chance to speak with Hoglan on March 21st?the day before its release.  Having met Hoglan on many occasions at local Vancouver shows, our 95-minute conversation was loose and full of laughs but also packed with insight into his many projects both young and old, as well as touching on Internet rumors, ALIEN, the ?real? Devin Townsend, his audition with Slayer, and many other things?.

By: Swissman

I decided to scrap my plans to go to Wacken this year to witness the final metal show at the historic Effenaar Club in Eindhoven Holland and the Dynamo Open Air in Hellendoorn and boy am I glad I did. The Effenaar was destroyed the week after the show to make room for a new building.
