TESTAMENT – Guitarist Eric Peterson

September 13th, 2009

Interview with TESTAMENT guitarist Eric Peterson

Interview + pictures by Luxi Lahtinen

TESTA - Eric.jpg

Testament have been touring their ass off ever since their excellent comeback album, THE FORMATION OF DAMNATION, was released in 2008. They have done many headlining tours of their own during 2008-2009, this including playing as a part of “Priest East” together with the mighty Judas Priest and Megadeth on their UK tour in February 2009 – and overall just working really hard touring-wise to keep the band´s name on people lips the best they can.

Testament also played at Ankkarock festival in Finland on August 2nd and were very well received there by the fans. After their gig I met a tired Eric Peterson briefly in Testament´s dressing room, and he was kind enough to tell what´s still in store for Testament for the remaining months of this ongoing year…

TESTAMENT – Chuck Billy

Thanks to Silke from Tough Enough Promotion & Management for booking us the interview with Chuck

Testa10.JPG

The legendary thrashers Testament from Oakland, California, have got their big wheel rollin´ nicely again. The band´s 9th studio album, THE FORMATION OF DAMNATION, marked the Testament camp´s return (at least partly) back to the times of their THE GATHERING album, spiced with some hints from their old days (THE NEW ORDER, PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH and such). Both Greg Kristian and Alex Skolnick had also made their return to the Testament ranks, without whose effort TFOD may probably not have turned the way it eventually did (even if most of the music for the album was written by longtime members Chuck Billy and Eric Peterson).

The band had started their “Damnation Vacation” European tour from Rock Hard festival on May 9th already – and after their well gone appearance at Sweden Rock Festival the other night, they finally arrived to Tampere, Finland to do the annual Sauna Open Air Festival where they were one of the two headlining acts of the first day of S.O.A. 2008 (Children of Bodom being the other one of them).

We caught up with Chuck some hours before their showtime, and asked him briefly about the ongoing tour, the new album THE FORMATION OF DAMNATION, the old days, some special tailor-made Testament videos made by some Testament fans – and even sort of accidentally, managed to find out about Steve ´Zetro´ Souza´s coaching activities for his two sons. Read all about that – and many other things as well from the interview we had with Chuck…

Chuck Billy of TESTAMENT

Jalometalli festival, which is arranged at the metal heart of northern Finland, Oulu, seems to get better and better each year as far as the line-up of bands is concerned. The festival has been organized since 2002, and for the last 3 years the festival has also become one of the most noteworthy metal festivals in Finland along with Tuska and Sauna Open Air festivals.

Last year the organizers of Jalometalli managed to book such names as Onslaught, Helloween, U.D.O., Dismember, etc. for the festival. This year?s menu hardly paled in comparison to the previous years? settings; especially thanks to such known and popular international metal acts like Candlemass, Kreator, Holy Moses, Unleashed, Rotting Christ and Testament for ensuring such a strong setting for every self-respected metalhead.

Undoubtedly one of the Jalometalli?s most awaited bands in 2007, were the Frisco-thrash pioneers Testament who made their reunion in February 2005 with the original band members. Testament hit Europe for a bunch of gigs in August ?07, playing shows in such countries as England, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, etc. Also, the band has been preparing songs for next album that they are supposed to start recording in March 2008. That new album will also feature Nick Barker (ex-Cradle of Filth, ex-Dimmu Borgir) on drums, so it?s gonna be interesting to see how his blast beats will fit into the new Testament songs.

2 experienced reporters from Metal-Rules.com found the Testament frontman Chuck Billy from the backstage after the show late at night, and Chuck was more than willing to reveal more details about the band?s future as well as giving his thoughts about several other topics that we wanted to inquire from him.

Thanks to the Testament tour manager Mike Stellone and Chris Delaney of Adrenaline PR for setting up the interview for us

Tuska Open Air 2007 – Helsinki, Finland

August 13th, 2007

Tuska Open Air Metal Festival

The 29th of June ? The 1st of July 2007

The Central Park of Kaisaniemi

Helsinki Finland

Review and pics by Luxi Lahtinen and Arto Lehtinen

(additional comments by Mika Hankaniemi)

Once again the prestigious Tuska open air metal festival is here. Thousands of metalheads have travelled from all around Finland and other countries to the central park of Kaisaniemi in order to celebrate the real metal inferno in the middle of Helsinki. This year the Tuska metal festival celebrates its tenth anniversary and of course the offering of the line-up of bands is as colorful as in the previous events.

Getting the mighty Norwegian black metal legends like Emperor and Immortal have been the most awaited ones amongst the audience for sure. However although these so-called big black metal legends definitely attract more of the extreme metal fans, the festival is not limited to one certain metal category. Everyone has something to feel and see and taste during these three days. Above all, power metal had a strong line up – for example Blind Guardian and Stratovarius, being the most known names in Tuska?s bill in 2007.

The festival has become a real guaranteed pure metal festival and has had massive popularity amongst all kinds of metalheads of all ages. The majority of the tickets were already sold out quickly in the advance sales a long time ago. However there were some leftovers if someone was willing to buy, and taste a feeling of metal after all.

Metal-Rules.com was again at Tuska to give an exact review and article on bands. Therefore sit down and enjoy your reading.

PAUL BOSTAPH of Exodus, ex-Slayer

January 25th, 2007

PAUL BOSTAPH

Paul Bostaph is a true professional and one of the best drummers on today’s metal music scene. Paul’s career started in the late eighties as a member of U.S thrashers Forbidden and over the years he has played with such bands as Testament, Systematic and Slayer for which he recorded four albums between 1993- 2003. In 2005 Paul joined legendary Bay Area band Exodus and later in the same year he made his recording debut with the band on SHOVEL HEADED KILL MACHINE. Exodus has now been on tour for over a year and last December the band returned to Helsinki. I met Paul on their tour bus prior to their show at Club Tavastia and here are the results of our interesting discussion.

TESTAMENT – Alex Skolnick

TESTAMENT – Alex Skolnick

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen and Marko Syrjala

Live and offstage pictures by Luxi Lahtinen and Marko Syrjala

Thanks to Blake Wolfe for the transcription

There is no doubt that Testament is one of the most important bands in the history of Speed – and Thrash Metal. The original line-up of Testament has released such classic albums as "The Legacy", "New Order" and "Practice What You Preach". In 1992 the band unfortunately lost its two original members when guitarist Alex Skolnick and drummer Louie Clemente decided to leave the band, but luckily the rest of the band still decided to carry on, releasing more high quality albums with several different line-ups.

Now thirteen years later Testament are back with the classic line-up – and let?s at least hope they are here again to stay. We met Alex Skolnick at the backstage after Testament’s brilliant performance at the Tuska Festival last July, talked with him about both the days of Legacy (pre-Testament), Testament and his musical career in some other line-ups (Savatage, etc.) naturally as well.

Here?s the result of that particular conversation, so enjoy your reading…  ;o)

Tuska Open Air Metal Festival 2005 – Helsinki Finland

August 28th, 2005

The Central Park Of Kaisaniemi ? Helsinki ? Finland
15th ? 17th of July 2005

Pics and reviews by Metal-Rules.com team Finland

What happens in the middle of July in the central park of the summer city of Helsinki every year? Well, what a easy question, the annual Tuska Open Air Metal festival takes place every year at that time. It pulls in over 33.000 metal hearts of all ages and all kinds of persons to spend an unforgettable metallic feast in the heart of Helsinki. As it is said The Gods made heavy metal which has turned out be nothing but right in every aspect as the weather was extremely warm and hot during the whole weekend apart from a few darker clouds having gathered around the area when Dimmu Borgir stepped on the stage and in general the atmosphere was peaceful and bigger problems managed to be avoided, thanks to the common metal spirit of the Finnish die hard metal freaks.

The bill of 2005 didn?t offer any offer so-called any big selling names like Nightwish being one of the headlining acts at Tuska last year, but instead a variety of different metal genres were at present ranging from a hyper-blasting grindcore to a more melancholic Finnish mainstream rock. Having a large range of metal proves Tuska is not limited to one certain metal category as everyone had something to feel, taste and see during the three long days.

The Tuska Open Air festival has reached and gained a lot of positive attention amongst the metal people around the world. There were people having arrived from Russia, Estonia, Sweden, all around Europe and even from some Far East countries. Despite not having a big name, the metal festival was totally sold out and even a few hundred leftover tickets for Friday were sold after all.

As usual it has turned out to be an annual mandatory tradition for having an article of the Tuska festival in Metal-Rules.Com, therefore the Finnish Metal-Rules.Com pain squad spent the whole weekend testifying several acts in action and tried to feel the spirit of Heavy Metal and enjoy the pleasure of the flesh as well during the three insane long days in the beautiful central park of Kaisaniemi and in the heart of Helsinki with several friends as well as everlasting enemies. Enjoy?

Glen Alvelais – ex-Forbidden, ex-Testament, LD/50

August 28th, 2005

Interview with Glen Alvelais (ex-Forbidden, ex-Testament, currently in LD/50)

Interviewed in Sept. 2000 by EvilG

Forbidden’s first two studio albums – Forbidden Evil and Twisted Into Form REALLY do something for me. Forbidden have to be one of the more under-rated of the bay area thrash bands to have existed. Critics seem to leave Forbidden out of things and concentrate on other bands when referring to the bay area thrash scene. If you ask me, I think that Forbidden are simply amazing! One of the guitarists, who was a part of Forbidden for their first album and their live EP – Raw Evil Live At The Dynamo is Glen Alvelais. I was thrilled to get he opportunity to pose the following questions to him.
