Midnight Eternal is the name of a new band from New York and is the brainchild of Operatika members Richard Fischer and Boris Zaks. The band’s self-titled debut album was unleashed in April and ought to appeal to fans of symphonic metal. Singer Raine Hilai and I hooked up and we had a talk about the album, which has taken the band 2 years to finish, the fact the band has become high profiled in the NY area with only their demo and their support shows to Doro, The Agonist and Quiet Riot amongst others. The album was mixed by the famous Tommy Hansen with art work by Jan Yrlund and is jammed with epic songs perfect for fans of Delain, Nightwish and Kamelot.

I have not seen the 2500+ capacity MacEwan Hall sold out for a Metal show in a long, long time. Not even for bands that also pull in the more mainstream crowds like Blind Guardian and Gwar. But Nightwish did it!  At their second concert in Calgary in over 20 years, the place was packed for an extra-ordinary bill of Euro-Metal. Delain and Sonata Arctica have also been through Calgary before and the crowds were out in force to see the triple stacked show. I’m not surprised Nightwish is riding a career high with a triumphant North American tour with their new signer as they just recently won the award for Best Metal album in their homeland of Finland.

Leaves’ Eyes

Interview with Liv Kristine

10th November 2015

Interview by Jacob Ovington

Leaves’ Eyes have become well known for their epic, Norse themed take on symphonic metal. Prior to their London show, we had the chance for an impromptu interview with Liv Kristine, one of metal’s most influential women. We talked about conquering the UK and Harald Fairhair’s link with the British Isles, balancing musicianship with family life, the golden era of gothic metal and her upcoming solo tour with special guest and former bandmate, Raymond Rohonyi of Theatre of Tragedy.
