New York death metal veterans, SUFFOCATION, have announced that John Gallagher of DYING FETUS will be filling in for a week of shows on their upcoming North American tour this April. Gallagher will be temporarily taking the place of vocalist Frank Mullen due to his other personal commitments. “I’m looking forward to seeing our amazing fans on the road,” commented Mullen. “John Gallagher from DYING FETUS will be filling in for a few shows that I can’t do and I’m sure he will do an awesome job. So please show your support for him and the band! See you soon.”
“I’m stoked to be performing on several shows with longtime friends and my brothers in metal, SUFFOCATION,” added Gallagher. “It’s going to be a blast and since I’ll JUST be singing the vocals, they are going to be super sick and guttural. So make sure to come out and party with us and witness the brutality!”
New York death metal veterans, SUFFOCATION, have sold 3,213 copies of their new album Pinnacle of Bedlam in the U.S. during its first week of release. That puts the band at #152 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart and at #2 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) Chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
“Pinnacle of Bedlam is an album that we couldn’t be prouder of,” commented the band. “A lot of blood and sweat went into the making of this album and the fans have responded! Thank you to all of you who support SUFFOCATION, as well as Nuclear Blast for their support in helping to bring this brutal beast to the masses, and to our management team for keeping all the pieces together. We’ll see all of you on the road on the ‘Despise the World’ tour!!!”

Last year certainly had its share of ups and down for New York death metal legends Suffocation. But that’s really nothing new for a band that were one of scene’s pioneering and most revered acts in the early 1990s but were seemingly finished by 1998, when they split up and death metal appeared headed the way of the dinosaur.
Five years later, though, Suffocation were back and since then they have helped lead a death metal resurgence that continues to this day. Along the way, the band have unleashed some of their finest work, from 2004′s comeback Souls To Deny, to 2006′s self-titled behemoth and 2009′s Blood Oath, which marked their first entry into the Billboard Top 200.
2012, however, began on a sour note. Drummer Mike Smith left for a second time, and had some rather unkind words for his former mates on the way out the door (which can be found easily enough with a quick Google search, if you’re interested). But former drummer and long-time Malevolent Creation member Dave Culross came back onboard and Suffocation kept rolling.
Then frontman Frank Mullen had to bow out of a series of shows in Europe due to work-related conflicts, so Decrepit Birth’s Bill Robinson was recruited to fill in. Later, Mullen said he would continue to sit out a portion of the band’s shows going forward because of such conflicts — though he remains committed to Suffocation and will record with them, as well as tour as much as his schedule allows, an arrangement the rest of the band seem to have accepted.
In October, the band – rounded out by guitarists Terrance Hobbs and Guy Marchais and bassist Derek Boyer – were inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame, becoming easily the most brutal of the institution’s honorees, which include the likes of Connie Stevens, Perry Como, Harry Chapin and Billy Joel. A couple weeks later, though, they, along with just about everyone else along the Eastern Seaboard, got blasted back into the 19th century for a stretch by Hurricane Sandy.
Amid it all, Suffocation managed to record their seventh studio album, Pinnacle of Bedlam, which has just been released. And despite the turmoil, the band sound as ferocious and focused as ever. On the phone from Long Island, Hobbs offered the following status report on the band, as well as some of his other projects.

New York Death Metal masters Suffocation (Suffo) are still skinning and incinerating audiences alive some 24 years after their formation! While putting the finishing touches on their new slab of brutality PINNACLE OF BEDLAM, which will be out in February 2013, Suffo decided to give the hardcore fans in Stamford, Connecticut a special intimate VIP show at Fiddler’s Green. For $30 a ticket, in addition to a killer show in a tiny venue, fans could hang out with the band before and after the show! How cool is that?!? Even though I live 3 hours from Connecticut, when I saw this advertised on Facebook I knew right away it was a must see! Tonight would be my 5th Suffo show and I was pumped!

Frank Mullen, front man for New York death metal veterans SUFFOCATION, recently gave an interview that spread very quickly about him no longer performing with the band full time. SUFFOCATION, including Frank Mullen, have issued the following statements about the interview.
“I am not leaving SUFFOCATION,” commented Mullen. “Massive one month long touring on my side cannot be done anymore though. When the new album is released next year I will be touring as much as possible to support the album as well as the following year in 2014.”
When I was asked that question in the interview I was taken off guard and didn’t really know what my schedule was going to look like next year and wanted to try and answer. I haven’t given much thought to what our touring schedule would look like since we’ve been in the studio recording the new release. So I’m going to be getting out there as much as I can to support the album and get out there in front of the ones who have supported Suffocation over the years, the true fans. So we are going to be supporting this record as soon as it comes out”
The rest of the band adds:
“We have respected this decision that Frank has made, but by no means does this mean SUFFOCATION will ‘replace’ him with new singer or stop touring. Death metal has been good to us, and we feel fortunate with the success we have achieved. For shows or tours he can’t be a part of there will be a well respected, talented, fill in singer, so we as a band can continue to prosper and bring SUFFOCATION to the fans. Bill Robinson (DECREPIT BIRTH) is a good friend of ours and came through during the European tours when Frank was unable to make the shows, but he was just filling in those two times. The fill-in singer will be announced soon, and we promise that our fans will not be let down. We have been fortunate to make a great living playing music, and are willing to continue to give our fans what they want.”
SUFFOCATION arecurrently in the finishing stages of their upcoming new album entitled Pinnacle of Bedlam. The record was produced by the band and tracked at Full Force Studios in New York by longtime collaborator Joe Cincotta. Bassist Derek Boyer offered the following update:
“The recording process of our new album, Pinnacle of Bedlam, began Monday, August 13th. We brought in our gear, mic’d up the drum kit, imported tempo maps from our pre-production sessions, then dove right in! The drum tracking came out amazing! Dave Culross killed it! Once I laid down the bass tracks, the foundation of the album was built and was very solid and ready for Terrance and Guy to begin recording guitars, which they have. Thereafter, Frank began working on his vocals. The recording process is just about wrapped up, we just have some tweaking to do before we send it off to get mixed and mastered.”
“The meaning of the album title Pinnacle of Bedlam is the tipping point or most elevated moment as we approach the chaotic climax of this existence,” added guitarist Terrance Hobbs. “The cosmic scale teeters and the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. People should expect nothing less than sheer brutality, as we perform together with this incredible line up! We feel this CD will be the best SUFFOCATION album ever to have been released and are confident the fans will love it.”
