Styx – Paradise Theater (SACD)

Paradise Theater (SACD)
2014, Audio Fidelity
Rating: 5

Audio Fidelity have done it again with 1981‘s PARADISE THEATER by Styx. This is the second Styx release by the audiophile label and again they have struck the ball out of the park.

Being a casual fan of Styx and knowing all the hits I can say without a doubt that I have never heard these songs sound so good in my life. Songs like “Rockin’ The Paradise”, “Too Much Time On My Hands” and “Half-Penny, Two-Penny” need to be cranked up as far as your neighbors will let you. These are fantastic Rock songs that deserve to be heard at maximum volume and this release allows that without being harsh or fatiguing on the ears like many reissues out there. The clarity and depth of this release is top notch. Kevin Gray has outdone himself with the mastering of this classic album. He brought everything out to the front and has made it sound wonderful. It’s as though a new life was given to these well known songs as cliche as that sounds. Even the CD layer of this hybrid sounds amazing so you needn’t be worried about purchasing it. This is one of the band’s greatest albums and it’s loaded with familiar songs. There isn’t a single filler track on here like many of today’s albums.

I cannot say enough good things about this classic Styx album that hasn’t already been said before. This version will be my go to version for many, many years to come. It sounds wonderful to put it in simple terms. It has a real punch to it that was lacking previously.

Night Ranger is an American hard rock band hailing from San Francisco. The band gained its popularity during the early 1980s with such a classic albums as SEVEN WISHES, MIDNIGHT MADNESS and the debut DAWN PATROL. The bands biggest hit single to date is “Sister Christian” from the 1984. The first five Night Ranger albums sold altogether more than 10 million copies worldwide. After Night Ranger’s success slowly waned in the late 1980s, the band split up in 1989 and its members pursued other musical careers including Damn Yankees and solo efforts. The original band members Jack Blades, Grad Gillis, Kelly Keagy, Alan Fitzgerald and Jeff Watson re-united in 1997 to release two new albums in the latter half of the decade. Later on the original members Fitzgerald and Watson left the band and were replaced by Joel Hoeksta and Eric Levy. The current line up released its latest effort SOMEWHERE IN CALIFORNIA in 2011 and the band has continued to tour and remains very popular in USA, Canada and especially in Japan. The band now finally arrived in Scandinavia for the first time in their 30 year career and performed in front of an demanding Swedenrock audience in early June. After the show we had the pleasure to sit down and discuss with founding members Blades and Gillis about the bands future, past and present. Read On!
