MacAlpine’s update on his health:
“Hello my friends,
I would like to say hello to you all and wish you the best during this holiday season. Regardless of whether you are near or far, this is the time of the year that brings friends and family together.
It has been a while since I have had the energy to write, so I will take this time to give you an update of sorts, a small window into some of my daily activities at this point.
Two months after my surgery on August 28th, I have been strictly following the course of these excellent Doctors of Medicine, and progress is being achieved at a rate they as well as I am encouraged by. It is a difficult routine that I must endure for many more months that involves a very intense series of drug therapies and constant analytical procedures that are overwhelmingly draining because of their brutal side effects, but my eyes and heart are on the big picture, which is recovery.
More often than not the biggest hurdle is knowing that after you engage yourself in this fight – this battle on a weekly schedule – you still must reserve some energy to think positive, as that is a very important and necessary mechanic in this healing process.
Your prayers, messages and positive energy are not going unnoticed, and although I have quite a long road ahead, it is not traveled alone, as I have all of you there for support. And I thank you all for that!
I will touch base and give you further updates soon.”
TONIGHT, Nov. 25th 2015, Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan and drummer Gregg Bissonette will reunite at Lucky Strike Live in Hollywood, California, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of David Lee Roth’s Eat ‘Em and Smile album with a one-time-only show.
They’ll be joined by guest vocalist Ralph Saenz, also known as Steel Panther’s Michael Starr.
The show is free, and it’ll kick off 8:30 p.m. It will mark the first time in 30 years that Vai, Sheehan and Bissonette have played together. They’ll be recreating music from the 1986 album and tour.
Eat ‘Em and Smile was the first of two Roth albums to feature Vai and Sheehan.
This show is part of “Ultimate Jam Night,” a series of free performances that take place Wednesdays at Lucky Strike Live. This particular “Ultimate Jam Night” certainly lives up to its name.

From Hell’s Heart:
7/8/9(!?) stringed guitars – Yay or Nay?
The standard guitar used by most metal guitarists is a 6-stringed instrument. In the past several years we’ve seen/heard a lot of players using 7 stringed guitars, and even some pushing the envelope with 8 and, yes, even 9 strings. Why? Does it make things more interesting? Heavier? More progressive? Is it a waste of time? We asked our contributors to choose a side and back up their “Yea or Nay” decision with examples of players/bands.
FOR some, Steve Vai is just simply a fantastically fast and talented guitar player – but there is sometimes among the few who have not witnessed him live are those who doubt that he can deliver a coherent live rock show.
Until this Mandella Hall date I was one of those – of course I admire his recorded output, but could I really put up with two and a half hours of widdly, widdly guitar worship?
Thankfully I could. Read the rest of this entry »
”A Collection of Short Stories: Vol. 1″ is the first installment from Dave’s raw, unaccompanied instrumental acoustic series. “I wanted the listener to feel as if I was playing the guitar for them”, Dave says, “like they were right there in the room with me. The movement on the strings, the breathing. The wood of the guitar is speaking, and it’s all captured in its beautiful natural form.”
For the last 13 years, the only constant in Steve Vai’s touring career has been guitarist, Dave Weiner. Fresh out of college in Pennsylvania, Dave moved to Los Angeles in 1998 to attend Musician’s Institute: Guitar Institute of Technology. “No matter how many years of schooling I went through, after it was over, I always said I was heading to LA to go to GIT”, Dave explains. “Since I was 10 years old, I knew guitar was my calling… and school in sunny LA where I play guitar all day sounds like a great place to get something started.” The first day of school, Dave found MI’s job board and faxed in his resume to a local management company looking for interns. That night, Dave received a call from a woman named Ruta Sepetys. “It was a name that I recognized, but didn’t know where from. We chatted and she eventually named her clients, the last of which was Mr. Steve Vai.” Once Dave met Mr. Vai during his intern experience with Ruta, Dave submitted his demo he had been working on during MI. Weeks after turning in his demo, the phone rings. “I really liked your demo. You can obviously play.”, said Mr. Vai. “I’m about to start rehearsals for a world tour, I could use another guitar player. Would you like to join the band?” Dave Weiner has been recording and rocking on tour with Mr. Steve Vai ever since.
Dave Weiner is opening for Mr. Vai’s Story of Light tour to support his new record, “A Collection of Short Stories: Vol. 1.” The world tour has already begun and will continue on til late 2012. For tour dates, visit vai.com

Steve Vai is an extraordinary American guitarist who has sold over 15 million albums worldwide. The man started his career in the early 80’s in Frank Zappa’s band with whom he recorded and toured for two years. Vai began a solo career in 1983 and to this date he has released eight studio albums, several live releases and played with several other bands including David Lee Roth and Whitesnake. Steve Vai has often been called a man who set the standard for guitar virtuosity in the 80’s and he has won three Grammy awards. The latest album STORY OF LIGHT was released through Vai’s own Favored Nations Records earlier this year and the following tour now finally bring the man back to Finland after seven year break. In a new interview with Examiner.com, legendary guitarist STEVE VAI discussed his new album The Story Of Light as well as working with DAVID LEE ROTH for the Eat ‘Em And Smile album and tour. An excerpt is available below:
Examiner: Regarding the song ‘Yankee Rose’, were there actually any words ever considered or written for that guitar conversation you had with Dave for that?
Vai: “Yeah, there were some words I was thinking in my mind, but I can’t remember what they were. Something silly, you know (laughs).”
Examiner: It’s a great way to start a cut.
Vai: “Yeah. When I joined the band—I have a very quirky, esoteric guitar nature, but I’m also a big fan of rock and metal. So when I joined that band, or any band that I join, I assess the situation and I come to grips with what I think the appropriate contribution would be, but I also have to be myself at some point. So in opening up the record and doing ‘Yankee Rose’, I thought, What can I do here that’s completely preposterous that’s very me but still has rock and roll integrity and people will get a kick out of it? And I always have the talking guitar thing in my arsenal, so it was the perfect opportunity to pull it.”
Examiner: People are always analyzing whether the original Eat ’Em and Smile band was better musically than the original lineup of VAN HALEN. What are your thoughts about this?
Vai: “‘Better’ is such a subjective term, you know? I just don’t respond to these competitive comparisons. They’re useless and meaningless, because if it’s better for one person and not for another, then they’re both right. Your opinion is the important thing. You can never deny the immense talent, rock credibility and iconic historical contribution that Van Halen made. And Edward Van Halen is a guitar god of the highest order. I have immense respect and love for Edward, you know? I would probably be playing the guitar very differently if he never came along. He’s a totally inspired person.
When we started Eat ’Em and Smile, Dave got the best musicians he could, who he thought was the best. And I thought it was a hell of a band. It was one of my favorite times in my whole musical career, because we were rock stars, you know? And touring with somebody like Dave, you can’t even imagine what it was like. It was just glorious, man. And I knew it was fleeting, and I knew it was something that I wasn’t going to be doing my whole life, because my brand of music in my own head is very different. So, if you like Van Halen better than the Eat ’Em and Smile band, then you’re right. And if I like Eat ’Em and Smile better than Van Halen, then I’m right. But I don’t like one better than the other. The Eat ’Em and Smile band was fierce. And that’s it.”
Steve Vai to release new solo album THE STORY OF LIGHT August 14 2012
Virtuoso guitarist and visionary composer www.Vai.com will release The Story of Light, a new solo album of original material, on August 14. The title comes out on Favored Nations Entertainment, the label Vai founded in 1999. Its sprawling and expressive 12-song set continues a conceptual and cosmic narrative arc begun on the artist’s acclaimed 2005 album Real Illusions: Reflections (also Vai’s most recent solo studio release).
Although The Story of Light is largely instrumental, the album does feature guest vocalists including singer-songwriter Aimee Mann—dueting with Vai on “No More Amsterdam,” which she also co-wrote—and Beverly McClellan, a season one finalist on The Voice. McClellan appears on “John the Revelator,” a track inspired by a vintage recording of blues singer Blind Willie Johnson, whose acid-soaked vocals are in the mix as well. Other highlights include the title track (which opens the album), “Gravity Storm,” “The Moon and I,” and “Velorum.”
Throughout, three-time GRAMMY-winner Vai’s lead guitar is as lyrically resonant as it is technically masterful, his licks and solos bending sounds and in listeners’ minds in equal measure. The Story of Light follows the journey of a man driven mad by grief, intertwining tragedy, revelation, enlightenment, and redemption.
“I’m always pursuing knowledge, I’m a seeker of spiritual equilibrium—and music is a big part of that,” says Vai. “I’ve been obsessed with these kinds of ideas for years.” Looking ahead, Vai envisions a third set of songs that will unravel the mysteries and reveal truths that swirl through both The Story of Light and Real Illusions: Reflections. The completed trilogy, intended to be cinematic—even operatic—in scope, will include lyrics and narration.
The Story of Light is available as of today for online pre-sale orders. This special pre-sale selection of bundled packages is offered exclusively through Vai’s website, www.Vai.com, where complete details on the products and ordering information are available. Each package includes an instant download of a track from the new album personally selected by Vai, “Gravity Storm.”
Following up the 2009 live album Where The Wild Things Are, The Story of Light, is Vai’s 16th solo effort. In support of its release, Vai will begin a tour of North America on August 15th in Fort Lauderdale Florida, accompanied by his band—who are also featured on the new album: Dave Weiner (guitar), Jeremy Colson (drums), Philip Bynoe (bass), and Deborah Hensen (harp, vocals, keyboards).
