REVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA
U.K. hard rock pioneers Deep Purple have been annual visitors in Finland for a long time and this year made no exception here. The current tour “The Songs That Built Rock” includes also a Frankfurt Philharmonic Orchestra with whom the band performed a string of their biggest hits as well some rarely played gems. In fact, it’s already been six years since they released their latest studio release RAPTURE OF THE DEEP but it looks that there is still demand as they now sold almost 7000 tickets for their show for the Hartwall Arena.

ROD MORGENSTEIN
Rod Morgenstein’s professional music career began as a founding member of the groundbreaking group the Dixie Dregs in the 70′s. His unique, dynamic and musical drumming style has led Rod to win many awards such as Best Progressive Rock Drummer award in Modern Drummer Magazines Readers Poll 5 years in a row. Later on he has worked with such names as the Steve Morse Band and Jordan Rudess but there’s no doubt that he’s best known from his work with 80′s multi platinum hard rockers Winger. The band released three albums before they wraped it up in late 1993. Each member then went their separate ways to pursue individual goals. Kip Winger has released a number of solo albums, Reb Beach has worked with many projects and is now a member of the legendary Whitesnake, Paul Taylor did some commercials and projects and Rod himself became an Associate Professor of Percussion at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He has also been doing different projects all the time. In the middle of 2006 it was announced that Winger will be back with new album "IV" and a partly renewed lineup. Winger’s reunion tour reached Finland last October and then I had a chance to sit down with Mr. Morgenstein himself and ask about the latest news and have a look back at some good old times. ENJOY !

REVIEW AND PHOTOS BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ
There is no doubt that Deep Purple are living legends. I know that many people think that the present-day Deep Purple isn’t the original band. Some might think that it’s a latter-day revival outfit, put together by Ian Paice, who is the sole survivor and only remaining member from the very first line-up which existed between 1968 and 1969. This band has survived a seemingly endless series of lineup changes and a dramatic mid-career shift from progressive rock to ear-shattering heavy metal to emerge as a true legend of the current hard rock community and everyone should respect that fact. Band’s 18’th studio album “Rapture Of Deep” was released on last November and band started their current world tour 17′th of January from London.
