One of the greatest news to shake the world of heavy metal arrived in 2013 when it was announced that everyone’s favorite rock and metal festival Sonisphere is returning to the hallowed grounds of Knebworth after 2 years of silence and is bringing the best acts of rock and heavy metal to the UK.

Alongside festival headliners The Prodigy, Iron Maiden and Metallica, over 100 bands appeared on five stages throughout the weekend of 4th to 6th July, 2014 and we were there to witness it all for ourselves.

SONISPHERE – Helsinki, Finland

June 17th, 2012

The 4th of June 2012

Kalasatama Helsinki

The massive touring Sonisphere festival landed in Finland for the fourth time in a row. The first two Sonisphere festivals were arranged on the other side of Finland. For financial reasons the festival was moved to the capital, Helsinki, last year when Slipknot headlined the one-day event with several support acts. Obviously the turn-out at last year’s festival didn’t please the organization and for this year Metallica were recruited to headline. Nearly 50,000 tickets were sold like hot cakes when the line-up of Sonisphere was announced. Besides Metallica, Machine Head, Amorphis, Gojira, Ghost, and finally Hardcore Superstar had been booked to appear at the one-day festival on one stage. Of course, the celebration of Metallica’s multi-million selling BLACK album was the main bait to attract the audience.

Sonisphere 2010 UK

We arrived on Thursday, to acquaint ourselves with the surroundings and get pitched up. The organisation of getting in (even as guests) was rather oblique and I feel sorry for any fans that had similar problems with getting in through the gates.

Apart from that, pretty smooth sailing. The food on offer was sublime; there was just about enough beer (hic!) and some good entertainment away from the music. We indulged in all of these on Thursday so that we’d have time to see the bands we wanted over the weekend. Top marks for entertainment Sonisphere, on stage and off it!

Sonisphere storms the BT Digital Music Awards nominations

September 1st, 2010

Having asserted its position as the world’s largest touring rock festival and achieved sell-out status for the UK leg at Knebworth in just its second year, Sonisphere is now gaining high recognition in the digital realm. As an exceptional case, Sonisphere is the only brand to have gained two shortlisted entries among the final six in a single category – Best Event – in this year’s BT Digital Music Awards, the Oscars of the online world. It is also up for the People’s Choice category of Best Official Website.

Its two successful entries in the Best Event category are for:

1) The groundbreaking live ‘Cinecast’ broadcast of the Bulgarian leg of the festival tour which was watched by over 100,000 cinema-goers in the UK and beyond and famously had fans forming circle pits and stage invasions in the Leicester Square Odeon back in June.

2) The integrated digital strategy that helped propel the Knebworth event in its second year to become “the UK’s premier metal festival” (The Guardian) – one of the most spectacular festival success stories in recent years.

Other contenders for the award include Glastonbury Festival, Pendulum’s album preview live stream, Nokia presents Rhianna Live and The Ukulele Prom.

Fans can vote for Sonisphere in the Best Official Website category at:

Underlining the phenomenal growth of the Sonisphere brand in the UK and further afield has been an intensive focus on digital communication as a means to attract, engage with and reward what has already become a loyal, colossal audience of rock fans.

The last eight months have seen Sonisphere amass a staggering 7.7 Million unique visitors to its official website with 27 Million page impressions, 10 Million views on its online Sonisphere TV video player and 209,000 Facebook fans across Europe. It undertook the largest ever deployment of official festival mobile apps, releasing 33 properties including separate iPhone, Android and Java versions for each event on the tour. The Knebworth iPhone app was ranked Number 4 in the official iTunes UK Music App Chart in August and boasts a four star customer rating.

Stuart Galbraith, Series Producer for Sonisphere Festival comments: “I can’t emphasise too much the importance of digital to Sonisphere. We are very proud to produce what has become one of the most visited rock websites in the world right now and to have laid new ground that is already re-defining the way all music festivals communicate and build affinity with their audiences.”

Over 700,000 fans visited the 11 Sonisphere Festivals across Europe this year, which means more than one million festival goers have attended some of the best rock festivals in Europe over the last two years. The festival survived mud baths in Switzerland and Sweden, a sandstorm in Spain and a freak tornado in Finland. The Poland, Turkey, Sweden and Switzerland shows were the largest rock festivals ever to be staged in those countries.

Storm Leaves Dozens Hurt At Sonisphere Finland

August 9th, 2010

Story by AFP, pictures provided by Arto Lehtinen:

A severe thunderstorm hit the Sonisphere heavy metal music festival in southwestern Finland Sunday, injuring dozens and damaging the equipment of several bands including MÖTLEY CRÜE, organisers said.

“A severe thunderstorm hit (the) Sonisphere Festival in Pori, Finland this afternoon at approximately 4:00 pm (1300 GMT),” the organisers said in a statement.

“Strong freak wind gusts damaged the stages and knocked down tents and fences. Approximately 40 people were injured, two of them seriously,” the statement said, adding that those hurt had been taken to hospital for treatment.

Some 30,000 people were attending the two-day festival, where groups like IRON MAIDEN, ALICE COOPER, Mötley Crüe and IGGY POP had been scheduled to play, and the organisers said they were “doing everything we can to ensure that the show can take place.”

However, one of the stages suffered massive damage and had been closed, and several concerts, including Mötley Crüe’s, were cancelled due to damaged equipment.

Iggy Pop meanwhile opted to play an acoustic set due to the difficulty using electric equipment, while Alice Cooper had borrowed equipment from SLAYER, the organisers said.

Iron Maiden, the highlight of the festival, would also play the finishing concert as planned Sunday evening, although the set had been slightly postponed, they added.

“The show will run so long as it can run safely,” Sonisphere Festival series producer Stuart Galbraith said in the statement.

According to Finnish media, a plane chartered by Iron Maiden had been severely damaged at the local airport, as had a small helicopter.
