Tuska Open Air Metal Festival – Helsinki Finland June 27-29, 2012

July 28th, 2012

Tuska Open Air 2012

Suvilahti, Helsinki, Finland

June 27-29, 2012

The Tuska Open Air Festival is definitely a real metal festival institution amongst all other metal festivals in Europe. This current area, Sivulahti, almost located in the heart of Helsinki, only a few kilometers away from the downtown, is a new home for Tuska for the second time. Suvilahti is more like an industrial environment with the burning and hot asphalt underfoot. When raining, at least the area won’t turn to one hell of a big mud fest.

Another thing forcing Tuska to make a change was the date. Originally the festival was supposed to be at the beginning of July, but another big more international based festival took over the date and Tuska was postponed until three weeks later. Well at least some people got pissed off at the changed date. Obviously a few band negotiations needed to start all over. Hopefully Tuska will return back to the original date.

The line-up looked once again – amazing. Megadeth and Ministry and of course the Swedish war trad metallers were headliners, but Lamb Of God had to pull out of Tuska because of the arrest of the frontman in Republic Czechia and was replaced by Finntroll and Animals As Leaders had to cancel as the band managed to miss the flight. Of course a few cult metal bands like Saint Vitus, A.R.G. could be witnessed. The festival was an utter success although the event wasn’t sold out. All in all 26,000 people visited Tuska during three days.

Metal-Rules.com was present to check out a lot of bands and enjoy the sun and rain.

SONATA ARCTICA’s “I HAVE A RIGHT” VIDEO NOW ON YOUTUBE

April 23rd, 2012

The SONATA ARCTICA video for “I Have A Right” – directed by Tuukka Tenmonen – is now available for viewing on the band’s YouTube channel and below.

Sonata Arctica - Stones Grow Her Name

Sonata Arctica - Stones Grow Her Name

The song comes from the Finnish melodic metallers’ seventh studio album, Stones Grow Her Name, due out in North America on May 22nd & in Europe on May 18th.

Vocalist, lyricist, and songwriter Tony Kakko shares some background on the song & the video:

“’I Have A Right’ was the very last song I wrote for this album.  At that point, Tommy [Portimo, drummer] had already played his last track for Stones Grow Her Name, gotten ready to go to sauna AND opened his first beer for that night, when I [texted] him to check his e-mail and record yet one more ‘easy track.’  He was mildly pissed.  And perhaps fueled by that, he nailed the song on the first take. It was a very emotional moment for him, I was told.  The song hits home, if you know the subject and can relate to it.  To put it short, it’s a song about how we should not pass the burden we get from the past generation onto the shoulders of our future offspring.  It’s a Children’s Rights subject.  Not the most metal subject ever, I suppose, but then again, I think it fits our band well and is pretty universal.  Funny to actually have fans from each age group that this songs speaks about.  Let’s see what comes of it.

“Choosing the first single and video from this album was not very easy this time around, as we had so many candidates – the best possible problem to have!  ‘I Have A Right’ won the vote.

“The playing parts for this video were shot in our home town Kemi, here in Finland.  The location was an old, abandoned school building, somehow spooky and COLD.  It was mid-March.  Could say we were lucky the weather was unseasonably warm, yet way below zero.

“Director Tuukka Temonen and his crew did a great job with editing and all the additional footage.  All in all, from my point of view, this was the easiest ever SONATA ARCTICA video to make. No twelve hours standing in a room filled with bird shit, no freezing my ass off on the ice in the middle of the sea from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. or running in the woods in the middle of the night and not sleeping for 48 hours… I had all that with the past videos.

“I am more than pleased.  I hope you like the song and video as much as we do.  See you on tour, folks!”

Stones Grow Her Name was recorded in several studios all over Finland, mixed at Sonic Pump Studios by Mikko Karmila, and mastered at Chartmakers by Svante Forsbäck.

The track listing for the new album is:

01. Only The Broken Hearts (Make You Beautiful)

02. Shitload Of Money

03. Losing My Insanity

04. Somewhere Close To You

05. I Have A Right

06. Alone In Heaven

07. The Day

08. Cinderblox

09. Don’t Be Mean

10. Wildfire, Part II – One With The Mountain

11. Wildfire, Part III – Wildfire Town, Population: 0

Bonus Track for Deluxe Digi-Pak version ONLY:

12. Tonight I Dance Alone

SONATA ARCTICA On Forthcoming Album – “It Would Be Nice To Explore The Lighter Side”

July 3rd, 2011

In a recent chat at Sonisphere Helsinki with RockAAA.com, Finland’s SONATA ARCTICA revealed plans to express their lighter side in their forthcoming new album after claiming they have had enough of showcasing their dark side. Frontman Tony Kakko commented:

“Every album is a surprise and it’s too early to say too much. It won’t actually be darker. Pretty much vice-versa. We’ve gone quite deep down that road, the dark side, so I think it would be nice to explore the lighter side and smile for a reason.”

More details coming soon.

As previously reported, Sonata Arctica have been confirmed to play the Satama Open Air 2011 on August 6th, which takes place in Kemi, Finland. Go to this location for event information.

Their summer festival schedule is now as follows:

July
7 – Getaway Rock – Gävle, Sweden
15 – Kavarna Rock Fest – Kavarna, Bulgaria
16 – Bang Your Head – Balingen, Germany

August
6 – Satama Open Air 2011 – Kemi, Finland
12 – Rock Pod Kamenom – Snina, Slovakia
13 – ARTmania Festival – Sibiu, Romania
14 – Sziget Festival – Budapest, Hungary

SONATA ARCTICA, Labyrinth, Triosphere

@ O2 Islington Academy, London

25th March 2011

Review: Rhiannon Marley

There was already a large crowd outside eagerly queuing for tonight’s gig when we arrived, with the doors opening exceptionally early for a gig, I was surprised to see the venue packed so early in the evening! With fans blocking the stairways inside desperately trying to get to the merchandise section, this was not the best place to have it, but it didn’t take long until we were inside!

SONATA ARCTICA INTERVIEW @ O2 Islington Academy, London

SONATA ARCTICA

Interview with bassist Marko Paasikoski and guitarist Elias Viljanen

@ O2 Islington Academy, London

25th March 2011

Reviewer: Rhiannon Marley

Of all the musicians they could take out for a drink one night, Sonata Arctica would pick Britney Spears! Well actually, that’s an exaggeration; their bassist, Marko Paasikoski, is just hard pushed for an answer. Let’s miss the joke for a second, and put on a deadpan face. There’s something unsavoury about a bunch of noisy Nordic Thunder-Gods choosing squeaky-clean-turned-wild-child bubblegum princess Spears for a question about a musician. I feel I should do something about this, and suggest that it’d be all right to take her out – if you closed her mouth, that is!

SONATA ARCTICA: FIFTH “BEHIND THE SCENES” TOUR VIDEO NOW ONLINE

December 14th, 2010

Finnish melodic metallers SONATA ARCTICA have uploaded the fifth video installment of a series featuring behind-the-scenes footage from their recent South American tour.  Watch the video clip here or below:

SONATA ARCTICA’s February 27, 2011 concert in Milan, Italy will be filmed for the band’s second live DVD, to be released in late 2011.  According to a recent statement, “[SONATA ARCTICA] will perform a pretty unique show of at least 120 minutes. Next to songs of their latest albums, The Days Of Grays and Unia, they also will perform some of the older songs from previous albums plus some very rare songs they didn’t play live during the last years. For sure this will be an unforgettable event and a journey from the beginning of their career as one of the most popular Finnish metal bands until now — you definitely shouldn’t miss it.

“The DVD will be released through Nuclear Blast Records and Marquee Inc. in Japan and will, next to the show in Milan, contain another show, recorded 2009 during the SONATA ARCTICA Open Air Festival in their hometown Kemi, Finland. And of course, there will be massive bonus material such as the ‘making-of,’ interviews, and plenty of video footage the band recorded the last few years during their career on tour.”
