Overkill

Overkill

Next time London decide they want to bulldoze one of our beloved music venues perhaps they could invite the wrecking crew, aka Overkill, along. At least then we’d be guaranteed one more good time before ‘progress’ steps in. Cause after more than 30 years Overkill know about good times, and crucially with them progress isn’t a frightening word. Because in Overkill’s case it doesn’t mean destroying the existing but keeping building on those foundations. Maybe it’s because they’re not British. Take note London.

Soilwork – The Infinite World Tour – Calgary, Canada

Just after the release of their ninth album The Living Infinite [Nuclear Blast, 2013], Soilwork began the North American leg of “The Inifinite World Tour”. Joining the swedes as main support was progressive shred master Jeff Loomis. Adding some variety to bill were thrashers Hatchet, Bonded by Blood and death metallers Blackguard. On March 30th, 2013 the tour stopped at the Republik in Calgary, Alta., and a sizable line of fans eagerly awaited the show start.

Hatchet from San Francisco, CA kicked off the show early to a good-sized crowd. The band showed their roots with a Bay Area thrash sound. Their short set was energetic and seemed well received by the hard core thrashers in the crowd, but it wasn’t anything innovative.

Bonded by Blood, the second California thrash act of the night, kept a thrashing frenzy going from their first tune, “I Can’t Hear You”. The charismatic band worked the crowd very well , even getting a small mosh pit going.

Montreal’s Blackguard played a powerful set, creating a full and atmospheric sound. In their short set they gave the audience a taste of their upcoming album in among their older work. Vocalist Paul Ablaze is a gregarious frontman and he was singing into people faces and grabbing their heads, inciting more energy.  Blackguard’s axemen shredded furiously and joining them on this tour was the Agonist’s bassist Chris Kells. Justine Ethier was a whirlwind of sticks and hair as she laid into her kit.

When Jeff Loomis took the stage a very enthusiastic multitude of fans had crowded up to the stage and welcomed him with cheers and raised horns.  The instrumental set contained only a little banter and some thank you’s from Loomis. The forty-five minute set was all about show casing that stellar vibrato technique and speed that is impressively precise. The set was comprised of songs from Plains of Oblivion [Century Media, 2012] and Zero Order Phase [Century Media, 2008] and the crowd loved hearing the technicality live. Everyone was captivated for the entire set.

Soikwork kicked off their set with “This Momentary Bliss” from their newest release The Living Infinite. They followed up right away with an older track, “Like the Average Stalker” and continued to assault the crowd with an hour and half worth of material. With the newest offering being a double album, Soilwork had a lot of songs to choose from for their live set. They included songs like “Spectrum of Eternity” and “Long Live the Misanthrope” among older favorites like “Nerve” and “Possessing the Angles”.

Bjorn “Speed” Strid’s vocals were spot on as he strode around the stage and leaned out into the crowd. Guitarist Sylvain Coudret shredded alongside David Andersson and both of the axe wielders got right up to crowd. Some technical issues had Coudret out for a few minutes but were resolved soon after and he got right back into the energy. Bassist Ola Flink… Dirk Verbeuren demonstrated his technique and speed behind the drum kick alongside Sven Karlsson’s ambient keyboards. A two song encore of “Late for the Kill” and “Stabbing the Drama” made for a strong ending to the evening.

SOILWORK: NEW ALBUM ARTWORK & TRACKLISTING REVEALED

December 1st, 2012
Soilwork - The Living Infinite

Soilwork – The Living Infinite

The Living Infinite, the ninth studio album and first dual-disc release by Swedish melodic metal maestros SOILWORK, will be unleashed on February 27th in Asia (via license to Marquee Records), in Europe on March 1st, and in North America on March 5th.

Produced by Jens Bogren (OPETH, AMON AMARTH, BLOODBATH), The Living Infinite features artwork by MNEMIC’s Mircea Eftemie Gabriel who shares:

“Seven years ago, I created the artwork for the Stabbing The Drama album and I can’t believe how time flies!  Here we are, with sexy gray hairs, working with my friends in SOILWORK again. This time, we built the cover around a maritime concept, aiming for something direct and symbolic.  I believe we achieved that quite well.  From my creative deck, I salute you and say: ‘Long Live The Living Infinite.’”

SOILWORK states:

“After commissioning some pretty elaborate covers for the last couple of records, we decided to try something more sober and design-oriented for The Living Infinite.  Who better to call than the man who created the iconic Stabbing The Drama cover?  Mircea Gabriel Eftemie is not only a close friend but also an incredible graphic designer.  We’re all stoked about his work which is different from anything SOILWORK has ever done and perfectly suits the elegant oceanic concept of The Living Infinite.  Enjoy folks!”

Tracklisting for The Living Infinite is as follows:

CD 1

01. Spectrum Of Eternity

02. Memories Confined

03. This Momentary Bliss

04. Tongue

05. The Living Infinite I

06. Let The First Wave Rise

08. Realm Of The Wasted

03. Drowning With Silence

04. Antidotes In Passing

05. Leech

06. The Living Infinite II

07. Loyal Shadow

08. Rise Above The Sentiment

09. Parasite Blues

10. Owls Predict, Oracles Stand Guard

The Living Infinite hosts Justin Sullivan – lead singer of the English band New Model Army – as guest vocalist on the track “The Windswept Mercy” and also marks the recording debut of long-time touring guitarist David Andersson (NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA).

SOILWORK’s world tour launches with a 55-show headlining trek through the U.S. and Canada this March.  Support comes from Jeff Loomis, Blackguard, The Browning, and Wretched.

SOILWORK Announce Double Album!

August 30th, 2012

Swedish melodic metal maestros, SOILWORK, are currently in the studio with producer Jens Bogren (OPETH, AMON AMARTH, BLOODBATH) recording the follow-up to their 2010 release The Panic Broadcast. The Soilworkers have been toiling away and burning many a midnight oil to bring us not just one CD of amazing music, but two! That’s right, SOILWORK’s upcoming album The Living Infinite will be a double album!

Commented vocalist Björn “Speed” Strid:

“So here’s the scoop. Me and the boys have been waiting to share this for quite some time now: The Living Infinite will be a double album! A REAL double album, in the true sense of the word, which means no fillers and no left-overs.

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while and I proposed the idea to the rest of the guys in the band, during our festival tour last summer. Everybody liked the title The Living Infinite and also the idea of working towards the goal of releasing a double album. David Andersson was already playing with us last summer, so he has also been a part of this goal from the start. I feel very excited and proud that we’ve managed to find the inspiration and dedication it takes to create somewhat of a conceptual double album, especially since it’s dealing with a lot of existential questions.

We would also like to reveal a brand new band shot by Hannah Verbeuren Photography. We are currently hard at work in the studio, putting this beast on tape. Things are sounding incredibly good so far. So excited about this and can’t wait to share the awesomeness with you all!”

The Living Infinite, will also mark the recording debut of long-time touring guitarist David Andersson (NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA).

The Panic Broadcast debuted on US Billboard charts at #88 upon its release in July 2010.

SOILWORK To Enter Studio This Month

August 22nd, 2012

Swedish melodic metal maestros SOILWORK will enter the studio on August 23rd to begin recording the follow-up to their 2010 release The Panic Broadcast. In the producer seat this time will be none other than Jens Bogren (OPETH, AMON AMARTH, BLOODBATH). The new album, entitled The Living Infinite, will also mark the recording debut of long-time touring guitarist David Andersson (NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA).
“It’s been a pretty long time coming, but as we speak I’m sitting here smiling my ass off listening to the demos that will forge into The Living Infinite,” commented the group’s towering vocalist Björn “Speed” Strid. “I’ve been feeling pretty damn restless from this break to be honest with you, therefore it is with great excitement that I’ve approached this new album. As soon as we started working on songs in March, all my focus and energy went into building this new beast. We’re finished writing songs and I’m currently laying down demo vocals and I’m having a blast. I feel very inspired.

Around the time that we released The Panic Broadcast, I moved into a house by the ocean in a tiny fisherman’s village. The ocean has given me so much inspiration and raised a lot of existential questions, which will inspire a lot of the lyrics on The Living Infinite, the words Jacques Cousteau used to describe the ocean. Pretentious? Hell yes, but in the most typical SOILWORK manner, with the right intensity, dynamics and melodies to back it up and make it real. I can’t wait to team up with the rest of the guys and start putting this album on tape, together with the amazing producer Jens Bogren!”

“It’s almost time to start recording The Living Infinite and I seriously can’t wait,” added drummer Dirk Verbeuren. “The new demos are super intense guitar-wise with tons of harmonies and typical SOILWORK-style riffs. I hear A Predator’s Portrait peppered with some The Panic Broadcast, a hint of Stabbing the Drama and a bunch of new spices thrown in for good measure. We’ve all been writing and arranging like mad for the past few months, now we’re about to get together in the ole rehearsal space to finish everything up. It’s gonna be a hell of a ride folks, and it’ll be captured in stereo by the mighty Jens Bogren. Better sharpen your sledgehammers cause SOILWORK is back!”

The Panic Broadcast debuted on US Billboard charts at #88 upon its release in July 2010.
