GEOFF TATE OF OPERATION MINDCRIME

INTERVIEW AND PHOTOS BY MARKO SYRJALA

Geoff Tate is a German-born American vocalist and musician who rose to fame in the late 1980s with the progressive metal band Queensrÿche. The band released several hit albums including EMPIRE, RAGE FOR ORDER and OPERATION MINDCRIME which is still their most successful album to date. The 90’s were a difficult time, not only for Queensryche, but for the whole metal genre. The band went through some line-up changes and released more albums including OPERATION MINDCRIME II (2006). In June 20, 2012, it was announced that Queensrÿche had fired Tate, replacing him with Crimson Glory vocalist Todd La Torre. Tate and his wife Susan filed a lawsuit in a Washington court, saying that he was wrongfully terminated from the group. They also filed a preliminary injunction in an attempt to prevent either side to use the band’s name but as a result both parties could use the name. In 2015 Tate’s version of the band released the album FREGUENCY UNKNOWN. April of 2014 it was announced that that the remaining original band members Rockenfield, Wilton and Jackson were given the exclusive rights to the Queensrÿche trademark and that Tate received the rights to Operation: Mindcrime. Tate renamed his band to Operation: Mindcrime and in 2015 Kelly Gray, Randy Kane, Simon Wright, John Moyer, Brian Tichy, and Scott Moughton became full time members. The band released their debut album THE KEY in September. The renewed band started their first European tour on last November and then Operation Mindcrime also stopped in Helsinki where they played a show in famous Club Nosturi.  I met a good humored Tate on backstage of Nosturi and then we discussed about various topics including the new album, the band’s line-up and of course about the past… Read on!

BRIAN FORSYTHE

INTERVIEW AND LIVE PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

Brian Forsythe is best known for his work with successful U.S rockers Kix. The band started its career in the late 70’s with the classic line up of Brian Forsythe, vocalist Steve Whiteman, guitarist Ronnie Younkins, drummer Jimmy Chalfant and bassist Donnie Purnell. They released such hard rock classics as MIDNITE DYNAMITE, BLOW MY FUSE and HOT WIRE. Brian left the band in 1992 but he briefly returned to play in Kix’s final studio release SHOW BUSINESS which was released in 1995.  After some touring Brian left again and the whole band slowly disbanded until they decided to reform Kix without Donnie in 2004. Since then Kix have been playing some shows every then and now including Rocklahoma Festival in 2008. But there’s been more than just Kix in his musical journey. In addition to many projects during the years he’s currently playing with rockin’ country band The Shakehandlers as well as with blues band The Purple Gang but the main band for Brian currently is definitely Rhino Bucket.

Rhino Bucket was originally formed in 1987 and band find some great success with its 1990 s/t debut album. The sophomore album GET USED TO IT was released in 1992 but it failed to reach its predecessors success. PAIN, which featured former AC/DC drummer Simon Wright, came out in 1994 but soon band called it’s quits before returning again in 2001 with original members Georg Dolivo bassist Reeve Jones, drummer Liam Jason (who had changed his sex and was now called Jackie Enx!) and Brian who was now invited to join the bands ranks to replace Greg Fields. A new lineup released its first album AND THEN IT GOT UGLY in 2006 and THE HARDEST TOWN followed in 2009. The latter once again featured Simon Wright on drums. The bands latest release WHO’S GOT MINE saw the light of day in January of 2011 and soon after, for the first time ever, the band arrived in Finland to play a series of club shows around the country. Brian kindly sat down with us before the bands show in Helsinki and here are the results of our little conversation. Topics include, of course, the latest from Rhino Bucket camp and well as some Kix stuff as well… Read on!

UFO – drummer Andy Parker

August 19th, 2009

ANDY PARKER

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the classic UK rock band UFO. Still featured in the ranks are two founding members, vocalist (and the only constant in the bands event rich history) Phil Mogg and drummer Andy Parker. For the past few years the lineup has in addition consisted of two other members of the bands perhaps best loved (”Lights Out”) incarnation, namely bassist Pete Way and keyboardist Paul Raymond, with Vinnie Moore on guitar since 2005 who is filling the shoes of the mad axe man Michael Schenker. UFO’s newest record entitled THE VISITOR is their 20th studio album and the first one since 1988’s AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ without the wild man Pete Way on board. Filling in on bass for the album is Peter Pichl, and on this summer’s tour, Barry Sparks. For this interview we sat down with Andy Parker to learn more, not just about Pete’s predicament, but many other things relating to the past, present and future of UFO.
