Madam X

MADAM X

INTERVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

Madam X is an American hard rock/glam metal band formed in 1981 in Detroit by the Petrucci sisters, Maxine and Roxy. The original line-up was completed by bassist Chris “Godzilla” Doliber and vocalist Bret Kaiser. The band relocated to New York and got soon signed to Don Arden’s Jet Records. The band released their debut album WE RESERVE THE RIGHT in 1984. A single, “High in High School” was a success and not least because of it’s now legendary video which was played heavily in MTV. Unfortunately, the band drifted into trouble and after several line-up changes they finally disbanded in 1988. But sometimes things do change. In the spring of 2014 the band announced that they’re going to re-unite and soon after it was announced that the original line-up of Madam-X would perform their first re-union show in the mighty Sweden Rock festival in early June 2014. There I sat down with the whole band and tried to find about the reasons behind this re-union, the past and the future of Madam X. Read On!

August 3rd, 2013
Bobby Jarzombek

Bobby Jarzombek

Drummer Bobby Jarzombek (FATES WARNING, SEBASTIAN BACH, HALFORD) issued the following update:

Hey all!

All sorts of stuff going on as I’m getting ready for a busy fall on the road!

Big FATES WARNING news as InsideOutMusic has just announced the album title and release date and unveiled the artwork for the new album! The record is called “Darkness In A Different Light” and will be out September 30 in Europe and November 1 in North America. This is the band’s first new studio album in almost 10 years and my first with them. Needless to say, I’m pretty damn excited because we’ve put a lot of hard work into this record – I know I certainly have. Once again, Jim (Matheos) has written some amazing songs which, in my estimation, are every bit as good as what we did with ARCH / MATHEOS a couple of years ago – and Ray (Alder) is singing great! Read the official press release on the Fates website http://www.fateswarning.com and stay tuned for further details and advance music as we get closer to the actual release.

SKID ROW guitarist Dave “Snake” Sabo

November 22nd, 2012
Skid Row - Dave "Snake" Sabo

DAVE “SNAKE” SABO

INTERVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

New Jersey based Skid Row were one of the very last metal bands to hit the mainstream before grunge took over in the mid ’90s. The band’s self-titled debut was released 1989 including such a standard pop-metal classics as “Youth Gone Wild”, “I Remember You” and “18 & Life”. SLAVE TO THE GRIND followed in 1991 debuting at number one in Billboard charts! The third album SUBHUMAN RACE was released in 1995 and it did break the band away from the pop-metal world and introduced more heavy and a darker side of Skid Row. The changing trends in the music business and personal differences eventually caused the classic line-up; vocalist Sebastian Bach, guitarists Dave “Snake” Sabo, Scotti Hill, bassist Rachel Bolan and drummer Rob Affuso break up in 1996. Eventually the core lineup: Sabo, Bolan, Hill and Affuso continued for some time to work together under the working title Ozone Monday. Skid Row was re-formed in 1999 with a pair of new members; vocalist Johnny Solinger and drummer Charlie Mills. The band released its fourth album THICKSKIN in 2003 featuring drummer Phil Varone (ex-Saigon Kick). The latest Skid Row album REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE came out way back in 2006. This November the band  accompanied KISS, for the second time in row, on the KISS Kruise. We were honored to sit down with Dave “Snake” Sabo and discuss about various topics including Snake’s KISS fandom, the current state of Skid Row, the continuous rumors about Bach’s return and as well as some stuff from the past. Read on!

SEBASTIAN BACH Introduces New Guitarist

Vocalist SEBASTIAN BACH, who recently parted ways with guitarist Nick Sterling, has introduced LA-based Jeff George as Sterling’s replacement.

George made his live debut with Bach on Friday, September 28th in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada at Casino Nova Scotia.

Bach recently spoke with Amber Lee at Wisconsin rock radio station 93 Rock about the “contractual issues” as cited by guitarist Nick Sterling via a Facebook post that prevented him from performing with Bach’s band.
An excerpt from the interview is as follows:

“We did a big broadcast on AXS TV that we worked really, really hard on. It was a very big deal that we were on television from coast to coast all across the United States of America. Everybody that was involved in the broadcast had to sign a release so we could film it and they would agree to be part of the broadcast and the DVD coming out. Everybody signed it. I talked to Nick two days before the show and he still hadn’t signed it. And I’m like, ‘Dude, we’re filming this in two days. You have to sign this.’ And he guaranteed to me on the phone that he would sign it and be a part of it, and then when we got to soundcheck, he wouldn’t sign the release. So we could not film the show with him; he wouldn’t let us. He wanted all these sorts of demands that nobody else in the band wanted that were completely unreasonable.

If someone is not happy in my band, I will be the first one to show them the door and say, ‘Don’t let it hit you in the ass on the way out. If you’re not happy and you’re not part of the team and you’re not interested in being successful or being professional, then get out of my band.’ I’ve been doing this for 25-30 years and all I ask is that somebody is a professional in my band and has it together on stage and doesn’t wreck it for the rest of us, which is what he did in L.A. the other day.”

As previously reported, Bach had been scheduled to play a show in Toronto, ON, on September 30th at The Rockpile. BraveWords reported that show has now been cancelled. No reason – official or otherwise – has been given. Ticket refunds will be issued.

His complete live itinerary can be viewed below:

27 – Loudpark Festival – Saitama Shi, Japan

Hellfest Festival 2012

@ Clisson, France

15th – 17th June 2012

Review by Kirsty Birkett-Stubbs

Move over Batman – there’s a new symbol dominating the night sky as Hellfest’s mighty H calls brothers to arms for a weekend, that quite frankly, would strike fear into the heart of many a-charging army. As one of the official t-shirt’s states: Keep repeating – it’s only music… it’s only music… it’s only music…

SEBASTIAN BACH Takes On Radio Programmers – “You Are A Fucking Pussy, You Are Not A Rock Fan, You Are Hustling Nostalgia, And You Have No Balls”

February 8th, 2012
SEBASTIAN BACH (Photo credit: Gabriel Goldberg)

SEBASTIAN BACH (Photo credit: Gabriel Goldberg)

Vocalist SEBASTIAN BACH recently spoke with Marah Eakin at Chicago-based A.V. Club. An excerpt is available below:

AVC: When fans come out to see you now, are you doing mostly Kicking & Screaming material?

SB: “No, I do whatever I feel in my heart. I’ll do all the old Skid Row songs because I know that’s why people are buying a ticket to come see me play. But, you know, I’m 43 years old. I don’t get excited running onstage saying, ‘We are the youth gone wild,’ when I’m almost 50. It’s kind of silly. I don’t get on the tour bus and drive across the country so I can play my 22-year-old song. I’m doing it so that I can play my new song.”

AVC: That’s respectable. A lot of artists don’t feel that way.

SB: “I mean, think about what we’re talking about. I don’t walk around in 2012 thinking about 1989. I don’t know who does do that but, that’s, I guess, the nature of the business I’m in. But, when I was a kid, we were always excited about the next record that LED ZEPPELIN was going to put out and the next KISS tour, the new KISS costume, and the new KISS record. We didn’t just listen to ‘Rock And Roll All Nite’ for three decades.”

AVC: Yeah, but that’s the radio landscape now.

SB: “That’s what I’m saying. I would like to say to every radio programmer reading this: ‘You are a fucking pussy. You are not a rock fan. You are hustling nostalgia and you have no balls and you suck.’ That’s what I would like to say.”

AVC: Do you worry that, in 20 years, let’s say, people won’t know music that came out in 2012? They’ll just know songs from the ’70s and ’80s?

SB: “I love the song ‘Dream On’ by AEROSMITH, but I’m okay if I never hear it again. I’ve heard it so many times. Like, ‘Comfortably Numb’ by PINK FLOYD —okay, we’ve got it. I’ve fucking heard it since my dad played it when I was fucking 5. I don’t need to hear it anymore. It drives me nuts. That’s not the kind of rock fan that I am. I collect music; I collect rock ’n’ roll. I’m always looking for another record to dump into my iPod. It’s like we invent these iPods that have the storage capability to store every song ever recorded by every musician ever in the history of music, but radio only plays shit from 20 years ago. It’s like, why do we have all these gigabytes? To store the first two Led Zeppelin records? Holy shit (laughs). Give me something new. I’m so weird. I like Robert Plant with Alison Krauss more than Led Zeppelin. I’m the guy that says, ‘Let him be Robert Plant. Let him make something that he’s proud of that is artistically interesting, instead of having a 70-year-old man squeezing his lemon juice as it’s running down his leg.’ That was ’72. People are like, ‘Why doesn’t he get the band back together?’ It’s like, ‘Why don’t you fucking grow up?’”

Go to this location for the complete interview.

Bach’s video for the track ‘TunnelVision’, lifted from his new album Kicking And Screaming, can be viewed at the bottom of the page. His Kicking & Screaming & Touring 2012 dates are as follows:

February
7 – Peabody’s Cleveland, OH

11 – Deerfoot Inn and Casino – Calgary, AB

Former DOKKEN Members Gearing Up For Launch Of TOOTH AND NAIL; Vocalist SEBASTIAN BACH Records Guest Vocals On Cover Of ‘Alone Again’

December 16th, 2011
Baz & Pilson

Baz & Pilson

Back in July, LYNCH MOB / ex-DOKKEN guitarist George Lynch revealed in an interview with Classic Rock Revisited that he, Jeff Pilson (bass) and Mick Brown (drums) were working on material for a new band called TOOTH AND NAIL.

Lynch: “That’s Dokken without Don. The record is called Dump The Chump.”

Still a work in progress and slated for an early 2012 release date, vocalist SEBASTIAN BACH announced via Twitter on December 15th that he had been in the studio with the band:

“Just sang the song ‘Alone Again’ for a Dokken tribute record with George Lynch and Jeff Pilson at Jeff Pilson’s studio, had a blast! I forgot how great the song is. Get ready for another ballad, because every bad boy has a soft side! Hahaha.”

Pilson detailed the project back in August. An excerpt from the interview is available below:

Pilson: “Here’s the lowdown. The Dokken reunion has been scrapped, and I take a lot of the initial responsibility for that because of my schedule and commitment to Foreigner. I was, however, up front about that from day one. We did talk, though, and I think we all thought it was going to happen somehow at some time. Then Don and George got in some nasty email fights, which I’m not really in a position to evaluate but they did get ugly and seem to put an end to further reunion thoughts. The two of them had their own business outside of the pending reunion and something just went south. For whatever reason, it was time to move on. Then George asked me about working with him on the next Lynch Mob record- and I jumped at the chance. He and I started writing, got into a groove and wrote an album’s worth of stuff, all with the intention of Oni writing lyrics and it being their next record. Brian Tichy laid down some incredible drums at his studio (and co-wrote some music on one track) and we had an incredibly strong start. Then Oni just wasn’t feeling the music as being Lynch Mob, so it was shelved.

We figured it’d be the start of another LYNCH/PILSON record some day. Then actually it was Brian who had the idea that Mick, George and I should do a band, similar to what HEAVEN & HELL was to BLACK SABBATH , and call it Tooth And Nail. Because of everything else we have going, it’ll be just a recording project at first, but sure sounds fun. We’d record the classics keeping true to the originals but make them fresh and organic. Then the idea of doing new songs came up, and it grew from there. Now I’ve been working on lyrics and melodies the last couple weeks on my laptop in hotel rooms, and I haven’t been this inspired in years. I can’t wait to get home and lay these tracks down. I have absolute belief that the music George and I make together (along with Brian Tichy in this case) is real and inspired, and that’s what it’s really all about. So out of a mess of a reunion attempt, I think we’ll end up with a really fabulous record, and what could be better than that?

But make no mistake it was NEVER intended to be a diss on Don. Don’t confuse George’s sense of humor for the attitude and energy we all have for this project. Don is, and will always be, the singer of Dokken and an invaluable part of the Dokken chemistry. No one ever wants to take that away or dispute it one iota. But the three of us do have time tested amazing chemistry, and because we were writers on these songs, I feel we have a lot to express. If anything I think this will be a show of respect for Don, not some kind of competition. I only hope people enjoy it in the spirit for which it’s intended.”

Q: The working title is Tooth And Nail. Is this Dokken without Don?

Pilson: “I think I’ve explained that. Don’t think of this as Dokken without Don… that’s misleading. Think of it as a band with great chemistry coming up with new music that excites them, and also paying tribute to Dokken – music which the members all are heavily invested in emotionally.”

Q: George has publicly stated that you already have some new songs and you plan to re-record some of the classics. George tried this once before with Robert Mason on the Lynch Mob REvolution record with mixed reviews. What will make this a really cool recording that the old fans will dig?

Pilson: “We’re not going to try and reinvent the wheel. But we plan on making them rock, and giving our all on it. Remember, these songs are a deep part of our psyches as well, regardless if we’re playing them with Dokken or not.”
