It’s the last Friday in March, deep in the heart of what is supposed to Spring, with the onset of British Summer Time on the horizon – and it’s fucking freezing. In fact, the remnants of the previous weekend’s snow are still piled, not terribly neatly, at the edges of some pavements.
Add to the fact, that it’s Good Friday – which means that in this small part of the world the moral majority still dictate to the vast majority by forcing bars to remain firmly closed for all but a few fleeting hours and entertainment to finish at the unearthly hour of 11am! Swedish progressive melodic death metal icons, SCAR SYMMETRY, have been forced to cancel their upcoming North American tour that was scheduled to take place this November/December. The band has issued the following statement:
“North Americans can we have your attention please! It is with deep regret that we bring you these news: due to unforeseen problems securing our US work visas in time, our North American headlining tour will have to be cancelled. The waiting time for a visa interview appointment was several weeks longer than what we’ve experienced before. Our sincere apologies to THREAT SIGNAL, STEALING AXION, LORD OF WAR and KINGS FIELD – you guys rule and we do hope for the opportunity to share a stage with you sometime in a not-to-distant future instead!
To our fans, we will work our asses off to make this up to you! Expect to see SCAR SYMMETRY back in North America in 2013 – back with a vengeance!”

First formed in 2004 by drummer and lyricist Henrik Ohlsson, and guitarist Per Nilsson and Jonas Kjellgren during the band “Altered Aeon” recording session at Jonas’s Black Lounge Studios. Later that month Christian Alvestam and bassist Kenneth Seil joined the line up, which the allowed them to record “Seeds of Rebellion” a demo that got them signed to Cold records (an affiliate to Metal Blade records)
After releasing Symmetric Design, Pitch black Progress and Holographic universes. As well as releasing face melting songs such as The Illusionist and Morphogenesis “Scar Symmetry” sadly announced that in September 2008 they parted ways with Christian due to conflict of interests and touring problems. But from one comes two as Roberth Karlsson and Lars Palmqvist take the helm of the SS symmetry, Roberth tackling the screams and growls whilst Lars takes on melodies.
With their releases of Dark matter Dimensions and The Unseen Empire the band have stormed their way back and tonight they’d prove that. But before we got the gig underway we got the chance to talk to the founding members of “Scar Symmetry” Per Nilsson and Henrik Ohlsson… Lets begin…

I acquired a taste for Epica only recently, having finally been swooned by their latest effort DESIGN YOUR UNIVERSE. What really got my attention was seeing their live show earlier this year at New York’s Gramercy theater – their music truly explodes to life when experienced in the flesh. In September of 2008, Scar Symmetry released a statement announcing they had parted ways with their vocalist due to creative and touring conflicts. Losing a singer is probably the toughest challenge for any band. Often the group’s image is wrapped up in the personality of it’s front man. However, Scar Symmetry rightly believed that no one person was bigger than their band… so they found two new singers, allowing them to do live what their former vocalist could not handle, all of the vocal parts without losing his voice. With Lars Palmqvist and Roberth Karlsson sharing front man duties, Scar Symmetry appear poised to take their brand of melodic Death Metal to the masses. Their latest opus, DARK MATTER DIMENSIONS has already spawned two popular videos and sees the band touring the globe. Drummer Henrik Ohlsson was kind enough to answer some questions for us at Metal Rules.
With easily one of the best tour packages I can remember in support, it was time for Katatonia to launch their first ever headlining tour of North America. It wasn’t too long ago that they were supporting Moonspell in what was another well built tour package. Along for the ride this time were Swallow the Sun and Insomnium, both hailing from Finland, as well as their fellow Swedes in Scar Symmetry. I guess sometimes Finns and Swedes can get along! To say I was excited for this lineup would be the understatement of the year. Without a single bad or local band on the bill, it was certain to be a good night for metal.
