SANCTUARY signs worldwide deal with Century Media Records

May 22nd, 2013

Century Media Records is proud to announce the signing of the legendary Seattle metal band SANCTUARY. In 2010, four of the founding members, Warrel Dane, Jim Sheppard, Lenny Rutledge and Dave Budbill, came together for a few select reunion performances. At first, it was just going to be a handful of shows, but the response and chemistry on stage was so overwhelming that the guys changed their minds. Now, some 20 years after they left off, SANCTUARY will continue with their unique mix of US power metal, hard rock and progressive elements and begin work on a new LP. To complete the line-up, Brad Hull (FORCED ENTRY) will be filling in for former guitar player Sean Blosi. A late 2013 release is planned.

The band comments:

Warrel Dane: “Having been with Century Media since 1995 with NEVERMORE, it was a very comfortable decision for SANCTUARY to sign with them. Century Media has a great team that always delivers for all of their bands. I’ve known most of them on a first name basis for many years and I look forward to this new chapter in history.”

SANCTUARY – Jim Sheppard (Bass Guitar) @ Bloodstock 2012

Sanctuary Interview

with Jim Sheppard (Bass Guitar) @ Bloodstock 2012

Interview by Joffie Lovett

During my time at Bloodstock 2012 I had the absolute joy and pleasure to meet one of my all-time musical icons, Jim Sheppard.

Being a fan of Nevermore for many many years and then discovering Sanctuary off the back of that it was great to finally meet one of the guys that helped create some of the most influential heavy metal music of the modern era.

Here’s what Jim and I chatted about in the sunny heat of Bloodstock…

NEVERMORE “Is Not Dead” Says Warrel Dane; “Major” SANCTUARY Announcement Coming Soon

July 4th, 2011
Sanctuary

Sanctuary

Reunited ’80s metallers SANCTUARY – which feature current NEVERMORE frontman Warrel Dane and bassist Jim Sheppard – are currently working on material for a new album due out later this year/early 2012.

“Nevermore is not dead,” Dane exclaimed in a recent Twitter update. “Sanctuary is just the focus now and oh holy shit when you hear you will know why. Serious Lenny (Rutledge; guitar) is writing some amazing thrash it’s gonna cut your brains in half. A major Sanctuary announcement coming in the next few days…”

Nevermore parted ways with guitar player Jeff Loomis and drummer Van Williams in April. In a statement the pair wrote: “In a mutual decision Jeff Loomis and Van Williams have decided to leave Nevermore. The time has come to pursue our own paths from the group. Due to internal struggles and ongoing issues within the band, we feel it is our time to move on. We would like to thank all of our fans around the world for their years of love, support and enthusiasm. This was not an easy decision but a very necessary one at this point, may we all meet again someday, somewhere in time.”

Singer Warrel Dane Talks About SANCTUARY Reunion – “We’re Gonna Do Another Record”

October 8th, 2010

NEVERMORE/SANCTUARY singer Warrel Dane spoke with Jay Nanda Thesilvertongueonline.com recently about a number of topics. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

The Silver Tongue: Why have you chosen to reform Sanctuary after 20 years, especially with Nevermore doing so well?

Dane: “Well, I said years ago that it would never, ever, ever fuckin’ happen, but that was at a time when we weren’t really friendly with each other. But we are now. “Water under the bridge” would be the best way to describe our relationship, and I’ve heard some of the new material Lenny (Rutledge) the guitar player has been working on, and it’s fuckin’ killer. So I had to re-evaluate the situation. It’s kinda weird, because Nevermore has been doing so well.”

The Silver Tongue: So was the grunge factor of the early ’90s the reason for Sanctuary’s casualty after Refuge Denied and Into The Mirror Black, or was there something more to it?

Dane: “You know, I’m pretty sure that did affect the break-up in some way. The songwriting got a little weird toward the end, and at that time, there was a lot of pressure, especially from record company people saying, ‘Well, I expected something a little grungier.’ Ugh! ‘We’re not a grunge band!’ When you have a major label telling you that, it just goes to show that they’re so fuckin’ clueless.”

The Silver Tongue: What did you guys learn early in your career from (MEGADETH’s) Dave Mustaine as he produced the first Sanctuary record?

Dane: “Oh boy, that whole period is kind of a drunken blur (laughs). I think every band gets a break somewhere, and to make it in the music business, you get your foot in the door. We were fuckin’ lucky that Mustaine paid attention to us. Had it not been for him, I probably would not be talking to you right now, so I have to give much respect to him for that. We were at a KING DIAMOND/Megadeth show, and Lenny gave somebody a demo, and he heard it, and we were told he said, ‘I’d like to produce you guys.’ And we were like, ‘Yeah, right.’ But he must’ve been serious, because we got the call, and the rest is just crazy history.”

The Silver Tongue: Will Sanctuary be working on another album, or is the cruise a one-off reunion thing? Will every original member be part of it?

Dane: “We’re gonna do another record, but I’m not sure when we’re going to have time because the touring cycle for Nevermore just started, and it’s going to get crazy. (Guitarist) Sean (Blosl) didn’t really want to do it basically, so Jeff (Loomis), who was actually a member of Sanctuary at the end, is going to do it live. I’m not sure he’ll be recording, though. That band was about Lenny, and Nevermore was more about Jeff, so we try to keep both of those separate.

Nevermore Guitarist Jeff Loomis

July 25th, 2005

Jeff Loomis of Nevermore

Interview by EvilG / Transcribed by Duke
Pics courtesy of CenturyMedia.com

As any attentive reader has noticed, Nevermore are one of the band’s I worship. In fact, they are easily one of the better bands to emerge in the past 10 years. I’m not quite sure how the band manages to keep advancing things and how guitarist Jeff Loomis manages to out-shred himself with each album. On the new album, THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOUR, Jeff is joined by second guitarist Steve Smyth which only ups the ante. That is one topic we cover in the interview, along with some guitar geek stuff, the ever important “Maiden or Priest?” question, and of course stuff about the band’s new album….so let’s start there…..
