“Take Me Back”, the new video from RIOT V, the new band featuring the remaining members of legendary metal pioneers RIOT, can be seen below. The song is taken from RIOT V’s debut album, “Unleash The Fire”, which was released in October 2014 via SPV/Steamhammer. The CD marked the first release from RIOT without the late, great founding guitarist Mark Reale, who passed away in early 2012 and was limited on his participation on 2011’s reunion album “Immortal Soul” because of his health issues. The band was encouraged at the request of Mark and the Reale estate to forge ahead in his honor and has dedicated this new offering to him.
The band commented:
“We have played many shows all around the world in support of ‘Unleash The Fire’. As we take a break to work on our new album, we are releasing this video as a way to say thank you to all our friends for their support. Thanks also to everyone that submitted photos. Shine on!”
The Metal Voice producer Jimmy Kay had to say, “Riot has always been an underdog Hard rock band with so little documentation of who they are, what they have accomplished and how their legacy continues on. Now fans will get finally get look into their musical lives.”
Giles Lavery co-producer of the project also added,” This will be a behind the scenes look at the tour , including interviews and a lot more… so come on down to the shows we want you in the film”
Riot V will be playing a number of North American tour dates this summer in support of the latest album Unleash the Fire that was released in 2014.
Rock City, Narita, Fire Down Under, Restless Breed, Born in America…
These are the pioneering, superlative heavy metal records that represent the classic first decade of Brooklyn’s Riot’s, before the band would break up, eventually storming back with Thundersteel and The Privilege of Power, existing to this day as Riot V after the shocking death from Crohn’s disease of guitarist and leader Mark Reale.

The Finnish Metal-Rules.com commando team made their annual road trip to Sweden Rock. Metal-Rules.com has covered Sweden Rock since 2001. The 2015 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock. Over 70 bands offered one hell of an experience for the attendees during the four day festival. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past ten years always being sold out. This year wasn’t an exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economic situation worldwide. It has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article of several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The weather was tremendous, despite being quite windy and cold on the opening day. But we were there for bands, not for having some beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Rock on!
“Thunder And Steel Down Under” – first ever Riot tribute album, will be released on April 24, 2015, via Skol Records. Compilation has been produced by Bart Gabriel (Sacred Steel, Crystal Viper, Jack Starr’s Burning Starr), and will include Riot classics peformed by bands and artists such as: Axel Rudi Pell, Crystal Viper, Attacker, Alpha Tiger, October 31, Savage Master, Night Demon, Dexter Ward and others. The CD will be limited to only 1000 copies worldwide. Income from the album will be given to Sir Tony Reale – father of the late Riot guitarist and founding member, Mark Reale.
As it was mentioned on VH1’s “That Metal Show”, RIOT are one of the innovators of Metal music in America and beyond. Their albums such as “Fire Down Under”, “Rock City”, “Narita”, “Restless Breed” or “Born In America” are the classics of Heavy Metal, and their ’88 LP “Thundersteel” helped to shape a genre which we know as Power Metal. Band’s history has been marked by bunch of tragic events: Rhett Forrester who fronted Riot between 1981 and 1986 was killed in 1994, the original vocalist Guy Speranza (in Riot between 1975 and 1981) lost his battle with cancer in 2003, and band’s founding member and leader Mark Reale (who was also the only one constant Riot member since the beginning of the band) left us in 2012, after suffering Crohn’s disease.
The band left 14 studio albums, and after Mark’s Reale death, remaining Riot members decided to continue his legacy and after changing the name to Riot V, returned with phenomenal album titled “Unleash The Fire”. “Thunder And Steel Down Under” is not a usual compilation with bunch of cover songs. It’s a celebration of the Riot and Mark Reale legacy, and a homage paid by both American and European bands and musicians, who were influenced by this premier act.
The remaining members of legendary metal pioneers RIOT regrouped last year as RIOT V and released the fantastic album “Unleash The Fire”, which topped the year end media charts worldwide.
Today they unleash a new lyric video for the song “Ride Hard Live Free”. Check the video out HERE.
“Unleash The Fire” is out now as a digipak version with one bonus track and poster, a 2LP colored vinyl version, standard version and download via SPV/Steamhammer. Purchase it on Amazon and iTunes.
RIOT V Live 2015:

4/25: D-Lauda/Königshofen – Keep It True Festival
6/6: SE-Sölvesborg – Sweden Rock Festival
7/25: E-Barcelona – Rock Fest
The remaining members of legendary metal pioneers RIOT are back and are ready to unleash the follow up to 2011’s reunion record ‘Immortal Soul’. They are ready to unleash music in the great RIOT tradition that the fans come to know and love. RIOT V is ready to ‘UNLEASH THE FIRE!’
This marks the first release from the band without the late great founding guitarist Mark Reale who passed away in early 2012 and was limited on his participation on Immortal Soul because of his health issues. The band was encouraged at the request of Mark and the Reale estate to forge ahead in his honor and will dedicate this new offering to him. The album promises to please fans of the ‘Thundersteel’ era of RIOT as main song writer and long time Reale music collaborator Don Van Stavern does much of the writing as he did on ‘Thundersteel’ and ‘The Privilege of Power’. Don is joined by long time RIOT band mate, song writer and Reales guitar partner of over 20 years Mike Flyntz to create what they feel is something they are proud to call a RIOT record and Reale would have thought that as well. RIOT has a tumultuous history of member, label and management changes throughout the bands 30 plus year career but one things for sure, a bands longevity is through good music and if this new record is any proof, they will be around for years to come.
RIOT, like Johnny, are back again! Through the storm of lifes obsticles the guys are joined by powerhouse vocalist extraordinaire Todd Michael Hall (Burning Starr, Reverence), Frank Gilchriest (Virgin Steele, Riot’s Army of One) and former Mike Flyntz guitar student and resident shredder Nick Lee and are ready to raise the flag in honor of the RIOT legacy of music and our fallen band mates and the fans who have been demanding RIOT for years. This new onslaught headlined sold out shows in Germany, Greece, Spain and Italy and headlined the prestigious festivals Metal Assault and Metal Apocalypse early this year with rave reviews and festivals including Bang Your Head with Twisted Sister and Anthrax, Metal Days with Megadeth and Volbeat and they headlined the Headbangers Open Air with bands including Warlord and Anvil and top it off with the headlining performance on next years Keep It True 2015 Festival which is already sold-out!
The new record is slated for an October 22nd release in Scandinavia, an October 24th release in Germany, an October 27th release in Europe and an October 28th release in the US and Canada via SPV/Steamhammer. The album will be available as a digipak version with one bonus tack, a double gatefold coloured vinyl version also with one bonus track, as a standard version and download.
RIOT are consistently on radio and metal charts worldwide, as well as being a part of New York City’s Top 20 most influential metal bands and numerous mentions on VH1’s That Metal Show with Eddie Trunk and staff sighting RIOT as one of the innovators of Metal music in America and beyond! The new CD promises to be a true successor to the legacy of ‘Thundersteel’, ‘The Privilege of Power’ and “Immortal Soul”. RIOT V truely are Metal Soldiers and will keep marching and fighting the good fight to bring you the music you’ve come to know, love and expect.
As posted to the band’s official facebook page: “Went to vist Mark and took some pix of his headstone (front and back) Marks Official headstone ceremony this Sat, Aug. 11th @ 10am at Holy Cross Cemetary (17501 Nacogdoches Rd) in San Antonio, Texas (behind Rolling Oaks Mall) Public invited…………….Shine On!….DVS”
The official headstone ceremony for late RIOT guitarist Mark Reale will be held this Saturday, August 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetary (17501 Nacogdoches Rd.) in San Antonio, Texas (behind Rolling Oaks Mall). The event is open to the public.
Reale died on January 25 in a San Antonio hospital due to complications of Crohn’s disease — an ailment he had battled for most of his life. He was 56 years old.
Reale had reportedly been in a coma for two weeks after suffering a subarachnoid hemorrhage on January 11.
Mark is survived by his father, Anthony Reale, and was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Reale.
Mark spent most of his life working and performing while enduring almost constant pain and the side effects of treatment for Crohn’s disease. He was in Texas bravely attempting to practice for the shows, but was felled by a severe onset of Crohn’s symptoms, leaving him in the Intensive Care Unit at an undisclosed facility. Mark was struggling with these symptoms throughout the production of RIOT’s new album, “Immortal Soul”, and guitarist Mike Flyntz recorded a major portion of the guitars on the LP with Mark’s creative direction while Reale was unable to perform.
RIOT – ‘Immortal Soul’ – Easily one of the best releases of 2011.
RIOT guitarist Mike Flyntz has issued the following statement regarding the passing of the band’s founding guitarist Mark Reale, who passed away January 25th in a San Antonio hospital due to complications of Crohn’s disease — an ailment he battled for most of his life. He was 57 years old.
“I would like to thank everyone for the support and love regarding the passing of my dear friend Mark Reale. I have had the honor to stand next to him on the stage and in the studio for over 22 years. Mark gave me the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of recording and writing records, and also touring in support of those records. I was a fan first, getting his autograph after a Riot show at L’Amours when I was in college. Mark was a shy man who didn’t talk much unless he was being interviewed or on the phone. Lord knows he could talk on the phone. Mark also loved to laugh. One part of our special relationship was that we could laugh until we were crying, and he would be lying on the floor yelling ‘please stop’ and after five minutes of silence all I had to do was look at him and it would start all over. I will forever cherish those moments.
As far as a musician, he is the most underrated guitarist, songwriter, riff creator, visionary in rock music. He should be in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for his vibrato alone. LISTEN TO HIS VIBRATO. His sense of melody was incredible. He taught me so much. There is so much more I need to say about my friend but I have been at a loss of words since his passing. The only comfort I have is that he is out of pain. I will attempt to talk more about it with Fingers, Sunday night during a Mark Reale tribute on Fingers Metal Shop on WBAB 102.3, Long Island New York.
On Wednesday, January 25th, RIOT guitarist and founder Mark Reale passed away due to complications stemming from Crohn’s disease in a San Antonio hospital. He was 56 year old.
Reale had been in a coma since January 11th due to a subarachnoid hemorrhage. He had battled Crohn’s for most of his life, working and performing while enduring almost constant pain and the side effects of treatment for his illness. He was in Texas bravely attempting to practice for the band’s scheduled shows, but was felled by a severe onset of Crohn’s symptoms, which eventually put him in the Intensive Care Unit.
Reale’s Riot bandmates have issued the following statement:
“To friends and fans of Mark Reale and Riot, we are deeply saddened to confirm that Mark has lost his battle with a lifelong illness. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated by Mark’s family, friends, and bandmates at this difficult time.”
Metal Blade founder and CEO Brian Slagel commented:
“I was a huge fan of Riot’s Fire Down Under album and got to interview them for my fanzine. Great guys and I was lucky enough to finally re-issue Fire Down Under and the other early Riot albums on Metal Blade. We signed the band for their second run, so to speak, and put out some records in the ’90s that did well, especially in Europe and Japan. It was a pleasure working with them and Mark was always a kind soul — an amazing player who really has a big time place in the history of metal. One of the really nice guys who put out some incredible stuff.”
“It’s a sad day for all of us RIOT fans today. We have lost one of the great influences in metal. For those not familiar with Riot, do yourselves a favour and have a listen. Riot have released albums in 5 separate decades and stand as one of the best metal has ever had to offer. You will be missed Mr. Reale…thanks for the music and may your “immortal soul” shine on forever through your music.
Here is the Mark Reale interview which was conducted in 2009 at Swedenrock. Riot’s album IMMORTAL SOUL was chosen by the staff of Metal-Rules.com as the #3 album of 2011. “
Late last week RIOT founder and guitarist Mark Reale was been admitted to a San Antonio, Texas hospital in critical condition due to complications of Crohn’s disease. Due to complications arising from treatment for Mark’s illness, he remains hospitalized in San Antonio and will not be healthy enough to appear at upcoming shows as scheduled. Mike (Flyntz; guitar), Tony (Moore; vocals), Bobby (Jarzombek; drums) and Don (Van Stavern; bass) have, at the strong urging of Mark’s family, decided to perform the shows without Mark on guitar.
A new band update on his condition reads as follows: “We are receiving updates on his condition several times daily, and Mark is currently undergoing procedures to stabilize him. His father, in addition to several dedicated friends of the band and the family, are at Mark’s side constantly as doctors work to restore him to health. In accordance with the family’s wishes, no further details are being released at this time. While we are saddened by these developments, Riot’s music has been Mark’s lifeblood for over 30 years. We have struggled with idea of performing without him, and we are continuing to prepare with heavy hearts, but the entire Riot organization has agreed on the importance of bringing our music to the fans who have supported us for so long. We ask that friends and fans pray for the best possible outcome. Thank you for continuing to support Riot during this difficult time, and we will see you at the shows.”

23 – Miami – 70.000 Tons of Metal
RIOT founder and guitarist Mark Reale has been admitted to a San Antonio hospital in critical condition due to complications of Crohn’s disease. Subsequently, there is a possibility that he may not appear in the band’s upcoming performances in the US Northeast and aboard the 70000 Tons Of Metal Cruise to Grand Cayman.
According to a band update: “Mark has been battling Crohn’s for most of his life, working and performing while enduring almost constant pain and the side effects of treatment for his illness. He was in Texas bravely attempting to practice for the shows, but was felled by a severe onset of Crohn’s symptoms leaving him in the Intensive Care Unit at an undisclosed facility.
The band has agreed that the performances will take place as scheduled with the possibility that Mark may not be well enough in time to appear. Riot would also like to acknowledge that Mark has been struggling with these symptoms throughout the production of their new album, Immortal Soul, and that guitarist Mike Flyntz recorded a major portion of the guitars on the album with Mark’s creative direction while he was unable to perform.
For this reason, fans can be assured that the show will be as exciting as anything Riot has ever staged, even if Mike needs to hold down double guitar duty. Mark will be sorely missed in this event, but the shows will go on.
We ask fans and friends of the band to pray for Mark’s speedy recovery, and to support the band in our efforts to bring you the Riot reunion shows that have been so long in the making. While Mark’s family insists on privacy during this difficult time, your prayers and good wishes will make it to his bedside until he is able to return to the stage.”
