WHITESNAKE

6’TH OF JUNE 2011

Ice Hall, Helsinki

Whitesnake released their latest album NEVERMORE in March. The album has received great response and it marks the bands return more into its bluesy roots. The band has been regular visitors here in Finland since their rebirth in 2003 and this tour didn’t make any exception. It seems that there’s still good demand for Coverdale and his Snakes when approximately 4000 fans found their way to Old Hall in Helsinki.

GEORGE LYNCH – Lynch Mob, Souls of We, ex-Dokken

December 1st, 2010

GEORGE LYNCH

INTERVIEW BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

George Lynch is one of the most popular and influential guitarists to emerge from the ’80s-era heavy metal/hard rock scene.  Lynch is best known for his work with platinum sellers Dokken whose albums UNDER LOCK AND KEY and BACK FOR THE ATTACK went to platinum in the mid 80’s. In 1988 Don Dokken and Lynch found it impossible to continue in the same band together and as a result the band broke up. Don Dokken decided to start his solo career whereas Lynch decided to form a new band called Lynch Mob. Joining Lynch in the new outfit was singer Oni Logan, bassist Anthony Esposito, and former Dokken colleague Mick Brown. The band issued their debut album, WICKED SENSATION, in 1990. WICKED SENSATION became another milestone in Lynch’s career and it did went gold in States with over 500 000 copies sold.  The sophomore album LYNCH MOB presented a new lead singer Robert Mason and it was released in 1992.  The second album failed to reach its predecessors success and soon band was disbanded. Lynch released a solo album called SACRED GROOVE in 1993 with various famous guests including Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen and Mandy Lion before rejoining Dokken in 1994.  The reunited band released two studio albums: DYSFUNCTIONAL and SHADOWLIFE before Lynch decided to leave again. The late ’90s/early 21st century saw Lynch alternate between issuing albums with the Lynch Mob (with varying members) and as a solo artist resulting in such further titles as 1999’s SMOKE THIS, 2003’s WICKED UNDERGROUND and FURIOUS GEORGE in 2004. In 2010 it was officially announced that Oni Logan and Lynch will rejoin their forces again and as a result SMOKE AND MIRRORS was released in 2009. The world followed and in late 2010 the renewed band; Lynch, Logan, bassist Robbie Crane and drummer Brian Tichy finally arrived in Scandinavia. In Gothenburg in Sweden I had chance to sit down Mr. Lynch himself and talk about various topics including the reunion with Logan, Souls of We,  the past as well as a possible Dokken reunion… read on…

DOKKEN – Don Dokken

January 16th, 2008

Dokken was originally formed in the late 1970’s when guitarist George Lynch and drummer Mick Brown joined forces with vocalist Don Dokken and bassist Jim Montaneras. Together they recorded BACK IN THE STREETS. In 1978, future Ratt bassist, Juan Croucier joined the bands ranks and released BREAKING THE CHAINS in Europe in 1981. Jeff Pilson replaced Croucier soon and started to write TOOTH AND NAIL. That album was released in 1984 at it became a huge success. It included several hit singles: "Just Got Lucky", "Alone Again", and "Into the Fire". It sold over one million copies in the US alone and peaked at #49 on U.S charts. One year later the  band released their next album UNDER LOCK AND KEY and it was also very successful including such anthems as: “In My Dreams" and "It’s Not Love". Dokken did many successful tours and opened for bands like Aerosmith, Twisted Sister and Scorpions.

Dokken returned to studio in late 1986 to record another mega successful single DREAM WARRIORS for the horror movie NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3 – the soundtrack but it wasn’t until late 1987 before they released another album BACK FOR THE ATTACK. This became their most popular release and it reached #13 on U.S charts with the help of such smash singles: "Burning Like A  Flame" and Heaven Sent". Dokken was on top of their game but unfortunately they broke up due "creative differences" between Don and George soon after the release of live album BEAST FROM THE EAST in late 1988. Don Dokken recorded his first solo album UP FROM THE ASHES with all-star lineup including guitarists John Norum (ex-Europe) and Billy White, bassist Peter Baltes (ex-Accept), drummer Mikkey Dee (ex-King Diamond).

Around late 1993, Don started to talk again with Mick Brown, who had recently left Lynch Mob which was George Lynch’s band at that time. They joined up with Jeff Pilson, who was fronting his own War and Peace band, and started to write new songs. In 1994, they sent new material to George Lynch, who was impressed with the material. Together, they decided to reform Dokken and record a new album DYSFUNCTIONAL which was released in 1995.

Unfortunately, old problems resurfaced and the band lost George again after another release of album SHADOWLIFE in 1997. Dokken decided to continue with new guitarist Reb Beach (ex- Winger, Alice Cooper) and ERASE THE SLATE was released in 1999. A live album and awarded DVD LIVE FROM THE SUN came out in 2000 but then Reb decided to leave and join Whitesnake. Soon after, Jeff Pilson decided also leave and they were later on replaced by bassist Barry Sparks (Ted Nugent, ex- Uli Jon Roth) and Don’s old friend John Norum. LONG WAY HOME was released in 2002 but in the middle of the tour Norum was gone and he was then temporary replaced by Italian guitarist Alex DeGrossi. Jon Levin (ex-Warlock) joined in 2004 and since then he’s been a permanent guitarist and stayed on Don’s side. HELL TO PAY was released later on the same year and since then band has been more or less active doing a lot of touring and working on a new album which is titled LIGHTNING STRIKES AGAIN.

I managed to meet Don himself in October prior their show in Copenhagen and here are results of our interesting chat. ENJOY !!!

WINGER – drummer Rod Morgenstein

March 8th, 2007

ROD MORGENSTEIN

Rod Morgenstein’s professional music career began as a founding member of the groundbreaking group the Dixie Dregs in the 70’s. His unique, dynamic and musical drumming style has led Rod to win many awards such as Best Progressive Rock Drummer award in Modern Drummer Magazines Readers Poll 5 years in a row. Later on he has worked with such names as the Steve Morse Band and Jordan Rudess but there’s no doubt that he’s best known from his work with 80’s multi platinum hard rockers Winger. The band released three albums before they wraped it up in late 1993.  Each member then went their separate ways to pursue individual goals. Kip Winger has released a number of solo albums, Reb Beach has worked with many projects and is now a member of the legendary Whitesnake, Paul Taylor did some commercials and projects and Rod himself became an Associate Professor of Percussion at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He has also been doing different projects all the time. In the middle of 2006 it was announced that Winger will be back with new album "IV" and a partly renewed lineup. Winger’s reunion tour reached Finland last October and then I had a chance to sit down with Mr. Morgenstein himself and ask about the latest news and have a look back at some good old times. ENJOY  !

Whitesnake live 2004 in Tampere, FINLAND

December 16th, 2004

Whitesnake

16.11 2004

Tampere Ice Hall, FINLAND

Review and pictures by Marko Syrjala

The "Live: In the Still of the Night" tour landed Finland for the first time in September 2004 when band played in the front of a sold out crowd in Helsinki. A couple of weeks later they returned to play one show in the far North of Finland in Oulu and now they are here again playing a show in Tampere and still there is one more gig left in Turku tomorrow. So in total there are four Ice Hall gigs within three months in Finland by Whitesnake. So the question is, is this band popular or not?
