RAGE Guitarist To Appear On RALF SCHEEPERS (Primal Fear) Solo Album

October 28th, 2010
RALF SCHEEPERS

RALF SCHEEPERS

PRIMAL FEAR vocalist RALF SCHEEPERS is working on his first solo album. An update from Primal Fear states:

“Today, two fantastic lead guitar solos from none other than Victor Smolski (RAGE) arrived in the recording studio for Ralf’s solo album – thx Victor, killer job!

Achim Koehler has already started to mix the tracks at his Indiscreet Audio Studios in Stuttgart, Germany – more updates on the progress of the music – soon!

Don’t forget, Primal Fear Spain Tour – mid-November – check out the dates!”

Other artists to appear on Scheepers solo release include “Metal” Mike Chlasciak (ROB HALFORD, SABASTIAN BACH), Tim “Ripper” Owens (HAIL!, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, ex-JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH), Sander Gommans (AFTER FOREVER/HDK), and Snowy Shaw (DREAM EVIL, THERION, KING DIAMOND, MERCYFUL FATE, NOTRE DAME.

About the style of the solo effort, Primal Fear and SINNER bassist Mat Sinner – who is playing bass on the entire record and producing – told BraveWords.com recently: “In part it’s very metal. Very metal. So it will not be Ralf’s ballad album. There were some ballads where Ralf was showing a different kind of music, his talent in music, because he’s playing all the instruments on one song, for example. So you hear him playing guitar, keyboards, so it’s very interesting. But overall I will say it’s a very tough metal album.”

Further updates to follow!

Re-release of four Primal Fear albums

October 25th, 2010

Not many bands can boast such accomplishments as Primal Fear can. In over twelve years, the group managed to release eight LPs and become one of the most important members of the contemporary power metal scene. This year, Metal Mind Productions is proud to bring back four classic Primal Fear albums – the self-titled debut (1998), “Jaws of Death” (1999), “Nuclear Fire” (2001) and “Devil’s Ground” (2004) – each of them proving that true metal is still alive and kicking!

The history of Primal Fear began in late 1997, when vocalist Ralf Scheepers (Tyran Pace, Gamma Ray) and bassist Mat Sinner (Sinner) decided to join forces and form a band that would fully stand up to their musical tastes. Together with drummer Klaus Sperling and guitarist Tom Neumann they recorded their first songs for the Japan-based label JVC Records. After securing a deal in Japan, Primal Fear was noticed by European labels and finally in 1998 they signed to Nuclear Blast. The group’s self-titled debut release hit the stores in February 1998. “Primal Fear” delivered a raw, heavy material, full of rage and unbound energy. The opening track “Chainbreaker” says it all – razor-sharp guitars, fast double-bass drumming and top notch vocals introduce the listener to a true power metal paradise. Other highlights on the album include the mid-tempo stomp “Dollars”, the beautiful ballad “Tears of Rage” and a cover version of Deep Purple’s “Speedking”. “Jaws of Death”, Primal Fear’s second album, was released in July, 1999, delivering a much more intense material than the one on the debut LP. With the addition of second guitarist Stefan Leibing the band ventured into a heavier territory, focusing their efforts on catchy yet relentless riffs. Also, Ralf Scheepers’ vocals have improved, still resembling the style of the Metal God himself – Rob Halford. After the “Jaws of Death” tour, Primal Fear recruited guitarist Henny Wolter and began working on their next album. “Nuclear Fire” was finally released in January 2001, once again proving the group’s extraordinary talent. The album starts off with “Angel In Black”, which continues the tradition of phenomenal Primal Fear’s openers. Other highlights are the ultra heavy, thrash-driven “Fight the Fire” and “Iron Fist in a Metal Glove”, which sound much like a Metal Church track. “Nuclear Fire” became Primal Fear’s most successful album to date, charting at #37 in Germany and #23 in Japan. The band’s next album was “Black Sun”, released in 2002. It was followed by one of Primal Fear’s most spectacular tours ever – the famous Metal Gods tour with such acts as Halford, Testament and Immortal. During that time the group also began working with a new drummer, Randy Black (ex-Annihilator). His studio skills were tested with the recording of Primal Fear’s fifth LP, “Devil’s Ground”. The album included yet another classic opener – “Metal is Forever”, a true metalhead anthem. As for other highlights, there is the dark, apocalyptic “Visions of Fate” and the brilliant ballad called “The Healer”. The following years brought three more studio albums by Primal Fear: “Seven Seals” (2005), “New Religion” (2007) and “16.6. (Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead)” (2009), each of them showing the band’s undying devotion to power metal. With this year’s reissues of their classic material, Primal Fear once again remind all their fans that they’re still one of the most talented metal groups out there!

Primal Fear’s albums will be available in new digipak editions, each limited to 2000 copies. All albums include bonus tracks. The material was remastered using tube technology, digitally edited on a golden disc. Metal Mind Productions set up the release date for November, 22nd in Europe and January, 11th 2011 in USA (via MVD).

NOTE:

In light of this announcement Mat Sinner told BraveWords.com the following: “I know NOTHING about the re-releases (from) Metal Mind. No one informed the band or management about these re-releases. What I can read now on the net is that they even want to change the sound of the albums and want to re-master the albums. Without the producer and overall the band isn’t involved? This sounds very strange to me, but this business is getting weirder…”

PRIMAL FEAR Issue Tour Update; “METAL” MIKE CHLASCIAK Delivers Tracks For RALF SCHEEPERS Solo Album

October 8th, 2010
Primal Fear (Rome 2010)

Primal Fear (Rome 2010)

German power metallers PRIMAL FEAR have issued the following update:

“R.I.P. Steve Lee (GOTTHARD) – on of the greatest singers in our world and a friend is gone…

After 15 shows we’ve arrived in Finland after a rough ferry ride through the night. We’re looking forward to the final 6 shows of the tour and the tour in Spain is just around the corner. Had a great time so far on the road and the band is in a fantastic mood. The vibe on and off stage is great – all support bands are doing a killer job.

Thx to ELVENKING and KISSIN’ DYNAMITE for a energetic time and we hope to see you soon again! Now we’re preparing for the final six shows starting tonight in Tampere, Finland.

Aside of being a member of the just released new HALFORD album, Made Of Metal, guitarist Metal Mike Chlasziak delivered two outstanding crushing guitar tracks for Ralf’s forthcoming solo album and the songs ‘Locked In The Dungeon’ and ‘Dynasty’.

Great job Mike and all the best for your tour in Japan!”

TIM ‘RIPPER’ OWENS Performs JUDAS PRIEST Classic With PRIMAL FEAR

September 24th, 2010

Powerhouse American vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, ex-JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH) joined German power metallers PRIMAL FEAR on stage on September 18, 2010 at Progresja in Warsaw, Poland to perform the JUDAS PRIEST classic “Metal Gods”.

Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be viewed below.

Owens is being backed by the following musicians during his current European tour:

* Andy Boss (PAUL DI’ANNO, ABSOLUTE STEEL) – Guitar

* Jon Vegard (PAUL DI’ANNO) – Guitar

* Are Gogstad (PAUL DI’ANNO, QUEENSTREET, ABSOLUTE STEEL) – Bass

* Rick Hagan (PAUL DI’ANNO, QUEENSTREET, ABSOLUTE STEEL, 21ST CENTURY ROX) – Drums

“Play My Game”, the first solo album from Owens, landed at position No. 66 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200. The CD was released via SPV/Steamhammer. The offering consists of around a dozen brand-new tracks that Owens composed himself or together with renowned friends, such as Bob Kulick, Chris Caffery (SAVATAGE, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA), Mike Callahan (ex-EARSHOT) and John Comprix (BEYOND FEAR, RINGWORM).

PRIMAL FEAR recently released a new live DVD, “16.6 – All Over The World” (recorded in various locations between September and November 2009), and a live CD, aptly titled “Live In The USA”. Frontiers Records issued the two products separately and as a limited-edition combo on June 22 in the USA. The DVD is filled with an abundance of extra materials, such as an entire bootleg section with funny moments on the road, bootleg footage from various festival appearances and other concerts, all of PRIMAL FEAR’s most recent promotional videos, plus the making-of footage for “16.6″ and a brand new interview section about the past, present and future of PRIMAL FEAR.

Guitarist Henny Wolter Further Elaborates on His Departure from Primal Fear

September 15th, 2010
Guitarist Henny Wolter

Guitarist Henny Wolter

Guitarist Henny Wolter, recently dropped the bombshell that he had quit Primal Fear. In a blog posting earlier this week he said “it didn’t feel like a band anymore.”  Metal-Rules.com caught up with Henny to get an elaboration and to get a little more detail on his new band, Nitrogods.

On the topic of leaving Primal Fear Henny said: “I am kind of bummed myself, because I liked the musical side of it. But unfortunately that was pushed aside by too many other annoying things. As much as I appreciate playing to a larger audience and recording and working on a pretty high professional level, I am not willing to put up with the way they run their business anymore. Most people and fans know, and it is rather obvious that PF is a 2 man enterprise. I even guess there´s nothing wrong with that for some people and I certainly knew what I was in for when I got into it the second time. But lately it´s gotten to a point at which I don´t wanna serve as a writer and performer no more. I have always been a band-guy and that´s the way I like to work. It used to be that way in my former bands like Thunderhead and I really missed that in PF.

Henny is not playing with the band on their upcoming tour dates that start in a few days commenting “No. I won´t be playing for them anymore at all.

Henny is also no longer in Sinner. Speculation is that he no longer saw eye to eye with band leader Mat Sinner to which Henny commented “I am not too keen on having to deal with Mat and probably vice versa :) “.

With the announcement of his departure from Primal Fear, Henny announced the formation of a new band Nitrogods. He further commented that “Nitrogods is a three-piece and it will be much more Rock´n Roll than PF. Rather in the vein of Thunderhead or early (Eddie Clark, Philthy Taylor era) Motörhead.

Hope to see all my fans and friends on tour soon.

Primal Fear comment on Henny Wolter’s departure

September 13th, 2010
Ralf live with PRIMAL FEAR in Toronto, Canada (May 24, 2010)

Ralf live with PRIMAL FEAR in Toronto, Canada (May 24, 2010)

As posted earlier, guitarist Henny Wolter has quit both PRIMAL FEAR and SINNER. He commented: “It just didn’t feel like a band anymore. I am looking forward to work with my buddies Klaus (Sperling – ex-Primal Fear) and Oimel (Larcher – vocals) in my new band NITROGODS. It’s a mean little three-piece and we are working on the debut album which should be released in early 2011.”

Primal Fear have commented on Wolter’s departure: “The split happened seven weeks ago. There was no reason for us to make a sensational headline or bad mouth each other. We feel sorry about this, but we have no more comments on the situation.

At the moment we’re rehearsing for the forthcoming European Tour that kicks off on Saturday in Warsaw, Poland and takes us through nine European countries. Be sure, we are well prepared and definitely ready to hit the road with five very common faces on stage, looking forward to meet you all. The band is thrilled to play a different new set-list incl. Some nice surprises and we will start working on a new studio album right after the tour ….. and as a friend on Facebook commented – yes it is the two headed guitar monster.

We wish Henny, his wife and kids all the best for the future and good luck on his forthcoming musical projects.”

Guitarist HENNY WOLTER Quits PRIMAL FEAR: ‘It Just Didn’t Feel Like A Band Anymore’

September 13th, 2010
Henny Wolter

Henny Wolter

Guitarist Henny Wolter has quit German power metallers PRIMAL FEAR because — in his words — “it just didn’t feel like a band anymore.” Wolter, who is also no longer a member of SINNER (led by PRIMAL FEAR bassist Mat Sinner), is focusing on his new band NITROGODS, also featuring ex-PRIMAL FEAR drummer Klaus Sperling and vocalist Oimel Larcher. The group’s self-titled debut album is expected in early 2011.

KISSIN’ DYNAMITE, ELVENKING and CIRCLE II CIRCLE will support PRIMAL FEAR on their upcoming European headlining tour, which is scheduled to kick off on September 18 in Warsaw, Poland.

PRIMAL FEAR recently released a new live DVD, “16.6 – All Over The World” (recorded in various locations between September and November 2009), and a live CD, aptly titled “Live In The USA”. RALF SCHEEPERS / PRIMAL FEAR Sept. News Update

September 8th, 2010
RALF SCHEEPERS

RALF SCHEEPERS

Swedish guitarist Magnus Karlsson (PRIMAL FEAR, STARBREAKER, LAST TRIBE) has finished laying down his parts for the forthcoming solo album from Ralf Scheepers of German power metallers PRIMAL FEAR. According to a posting on the PRIMAL FEAR web site, “Magnus delivered his guitar parts on some songs of the album and did a killer job as always. Just some more lead guitars are missing by some other great players and we’re ready to mix the album after the forthcoming [PRIMAL FEAR] European tour!”

As previously reported, powerhouse American vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens (HAIL!, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH) will make a guest appearance on Scheepers’ forthcoming CD. Owens will be heard dueting with Scheepers in the track “Remission Of Sin”. Other guest musicians expected to appear on the album include Swedish multi-instrumentalist Snowy Shaw (DIMMU BORGIR, THERION, DREAM EVIL, KING DIAMOND, MERCYFUL FATE) on drums, Sander Gommans (AFTER FOREVER, HDK) on guitar and PRIMAL FEAR’s Mat Sinner playing bass on the entire LP and producing. A photo shoot with Alex Kuehr for the CD’s cover took place in early July in Germany.

In a recent interview with the “Metalzone” radio show (web site) with Kostas Purevil Kyriakakis and Helena Mihailidou, Scheepers revealed that his upcoming solo album will include a remake of his song “Saints Of Rock” from Scheepers’ pre-PRIMAL FEAR band TYRAN PACE and a cover version of “Before The Dawn’ from JUDAS PRIEST. “‘Saints Of Rock’ is gonna be, of course, a little bit more modern than it was [when the original version was recorded] in 1986,” he explained. “I mean, right now we have much more possibilities to make songs sound a little bit more modern, starting with the drum sound and the bass sounds — having a much more distorted sound.” He added, “I think ‘Before The Dawn’ pretty much is a [straight] cover — [there's] just a little more orchestral things going on, I have more strings in the song compared to the JUDAS PRIEST [original]. Back then there wasn’t much strings going on. I think they even have a piano [in the original version], which I don’t have. I have strings and I have this atmosphere stuff going on. Vocal-wise, I just added a harmony at the last bridge before last chorus, I added a harmony which is not on the original, but that’s the basic difference.”

In a June 2010 interview with Metal Assault, Scheepers stated about the musical direction of his forthcoming solo CD, “It’s more diverse [than PRIMAL FEAR], you can say.” He added, “In the beginning I had those ballads that we couldn’t use for PRIMAL FEAR because they might be too mellow, but now we’ve started to write together on it. Basically, it’s my ideas on it, but I have a great team, with Mat and Magnus and some other members — Sander [Gommans], the ex-AFTER FOREVER guitarist, helped me a lot. It’s a good variety — from the hardest to the softest tones.”

PRIMAL FEAR recently released a new live DVD, “16.6 – All Over The World” (recorded in various locations between September and November 2009), and a live CD, aptly titled “Live In The USA”.

PRIMAL FEAR – Tim “Ripper” Owens To Guest On Ralf Scheepers Solo Album

August 21st, 2010

PRIMAL FEAR vocalist Ralf Scheepers is working on his first solo album. An update from Primal Fear and SINNER bassist Mat Sinner – who is playing bass on the entire record and producing – reads as follows:

“Tonight we received the vocal files from Tim “Ripper” Owens (HAIL!, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, ex-JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH) for the groovemachine ‘Remission Of Sin’ from Ralf’s forthcoming solo album and this is a great moment for us and will be for the fans – both gladiators side by side – singing and screaming – great!”

Other guests on the album include guitarist Sander Gommans (AFTER FOREVER/HDK), drummer Snowy Shaw (DREAM EVIL, THERION, KING DIAMOND, MERCYFUL FATE, NOTRE DAME. Alex Kühr recently shot the cover artwork in Germany.

About the style of the solo effort Sinner told BraveWords.com recently: “In part it’s very metal.

PRIMAL FEAR

Interview with Mat Sinner and Ralf Scheepers

Interviewed by EvilG

Live photos by Steve Sanders / Promo photos courtesy of Frontiers Records

For many years now, one of my favorite bands is Primal Fear. I finally found the time to squeeze in a long overdue interview with bassist Mat and vocalist Ralf on the eve of the band’s return to North America where they will be playing a number of shows throughout the USA and Canada in May/June (2010).  Most of the discussion is about their newest album, the upcoming tour, and the latest news from both Ralf and Mat.

(Note: I didn’t have a photo pass for this show, and I didn’t realize that the venue would just let us chumps take a camera inside to take pics…otherwise I would of taken my own. However, thanks to Steve who attended and graciously gave us permission to use these photos)

After a disgusting fry-up at the All-Day Breakfast bar, I went off to bed to catch some shut-eye before Friday’s bands. Good start to BOA!
