Sweden’s Opeth will release their eleventh studio album, Pale Communion, on August 26th via Roadrunner. Pale Communion, which was produced by the band’s very own Mikael Åkerfeldt and mixed by longtime collaborator and Porcupine Tree frontman/guitarist Steven Wilson, will be heralded by the lead single, “Cusp Of Eternity” and available for pre-order starting Tuesday, June 3rd.
Pre-orders for Pale Communion made via the iTunes Store will receive an instant download of “Cusp Of Eternity”, with multiple configurations also available via both the Roadrunner Records Webstore and O Merch.
Pale Communion tracklisting:
“Eternal Rains Will Come”
“Cusp Of Eternity”
“Moon Above, Sun Below”
“Voice Of Treason”
“Faith In Others”
The new material find’s Opeth once again challenging the boundaries of extreme music. In a recent interview, Åkerfeldt stated, “I wanted to do something more melodic with this album… there’s stronger vocal melodies and more melodies overall… I was pretty consistent with that frame of mind throughout the writing process.”
The release of OPETH’s hotly anticipated eleventh studio album, ‘Pale Communion’ has been rescheduled for 25th August. The opus was previously set for a mid-June release via Roadrunner Records.
Opeth mainman and visionary, Mikael Åkerfeldt explains; “Many of you have heard the rumours already and we can now confirm that the release of ‘Pale Communion’ has indeed been pushed back to late August. Several circumstances prevented us from delivering essential tools to Roadrunner in time which are needed to set up the album release properly, and release schedule conflicts made us mutually decide on August instead of June.” Read the rest of this entry »

Hellfest – Clisson France
17-18-19 June 2011
Hellfest arrives for its 5th edition. The French festival has been growing incredibly huge and very fast. This year it traditional location in the sport facilities of Clisson couldn’t take anymore of the mass of metalheads coming to this small part of France from all over the world.
This year’s crowd-moving, main acts where none less than Rob Zombie, Scorpions, Ozzy, and Judas Priest, with tons of other goodies in between. An excellent line-up as usual, as it’s part of the winning formula that gave success to the organizers of this event, nowadays already one of the biggest metal fests in the European summer.
The weather won’t be the most pleasant ever, but on the other hand it could have been way worse than just some strong wind and rain here and there, and the sun has been lighting the fields from time to time, still giving the impression to be in summer, after all. But as this festival is amazingly fun if you are among the beer-drinking hellraisers in the audience, you can somehow understand the “hell” part when you have to keep up with the insanely long queues to get into the photo pit, along with running all over the festival area from stage to stage, trying not to fall over some boozer laying on the ground. Oh well… running is good for your health!

July 23-24, 2011
Review and pics by Monika Deviat
On July 23rd and 24th, 10 000 metalheads descended upon Downsview Park in Toronto ON for Heavy T.O. The two day festival took place the same weekend as Heavy MTL. This was the third year for Heavy MTL and its success from right from the first year prompted MTL organizers Daniel Glick and Nick Farkas to team up with Live Nation to create Heavy T.O. Two stages had bands playing right after each other, about 11 per day. Heavy T.O. sponsor, Jägermeister had a tent area set up with games and were hosting some of the autograph sessions. Certain bands like Megadeth and Slayer had line-ups of over a hundred people waiting to get signatures from their favorite musicians.

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – Swedish progressive metal titan Katatonia has announced its return to North American shores this fall. Katatonia will join fellow countrymen Opeth on a six week run, dubbed the “Heritage Tour”, which will conquer over 30 cities across the US and Canada beginning in September.
Guitarist Anders Nyström issued the following statement in anticipation of this monumental combination of Swedish metal heavyweights:
“Both you and we know that North America damn well deserves to see more of Katatonia, right? So how could we possibly resist heading back to the states this fall when Opeth are giving us the opportunity to be their special guests? It was just a matter of time before it had to happen again. Yes we toured together in the same formation ten years ago in Europ,e and not only was that tour very well received by both bands’ fans, but we also shared a great ride together as long time friends. Some people have even been calling this bill their ‘dream line-up’, so it’s only fair that the loyal fans in North America now get their piece of the cake too! So come out and see us on this great tour and remember we’re playing headlining sideshows as well! Looking forward! Cheers!”
Katatonia last toured North America in the fall of 2010, a headlining run on the “Night Over North America” tour, in support of its 2009 release Night Is The New Day.
The band recently celebrated its 20th anniversary as a leading light in progressive heavy metal.

OPETH TO RELEASE IN LIVE CONCERT AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL
PERFORMING “EVOLUTION XX: AN OPETH ANTHOLOGY”
“The remarkable Swedish group Opeth…[is] on a level where fantasy becomes art.” – The New York Times
New York, NY: As part of the ongoing celebration of their 20th anniversary, Sweden’s OPETH is releasing live footage and audio from the band’s recent performance at London’s famed Royal Albert Hall. In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, due out 9/21/10, is a fierce testament to Opeth’s continued success in the progressive metal community.
Twenty years and nine records into their legendary career, Opeth’s “progressively creative spirit” (ARTISTdirect) remains unwavering, propelling the band through the “Evolution XX: An Opeth Anthology” tour, which brought the Swedish titans to six of the world’s most unique venues, and now, with the release of In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, into the homes of their fans.
The performance at the Royal Albert Hall (recorded on the 5th of April, 2010) includes two sets, the first consisting of the band performing 2000’s now-classic, breakthrough epic, Blackwater Park in its entirety, and the second, a chronologically arranged selection of material from the rest of Opeth’s extensive catalogue, totaling almost three hours of music. It is, like the rest of Opeth’s greatest work, “purposefully warped in all the right places” (Decibel). The front cover artwork concept pays tribute to Deep Purple´s Concerto for Group and Orchestra, underlining the band’s longstanding love for their prog-rock roots.
Thinking back to the concert, frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt says “Opeth had a magical night playing the Royal Albert Hall. It was a dream come true, and now afterwards, it still feels like a dream. We got it all on film, and this, our third live recording and DVD might be my personal favorite. One couldn’t help to think of all the fantastic artists that played there over the years. Looking back at this night of celebration brings me fond memories of our 20th anniversary—this package is the delayed birthday present. Enjoy!”
The release will be available as three very special configurations:

OPETH Interview with Fredrik Åkesson and Mikael Åkerfeldt
Interview and live pics by Kyle Moore, the Metal Magnus
I had the opportunity to speak briefly with Frederik after Opeth’s 20th anniversary show in New York City. While I was told I’d only be seeing Frederik, Martin was also in the room hanging out, and a couple minutes in, Mikael walked in to answer some questions too!

Terminal 5 – New York, NY
April 7th, 2010
There’s the entire world of heavy metal in all its genres, evolutions, and extensive devolutions…and then there’s Opeth. The one band in all the world that embodies the essence of extreme metal while simultaneously eclipsing all confines of genre. Upon my first hearing of Opeth, I remarked “how can something so ugly be so beautiful at the same time?” Even outside their native realm of death metal, they have no peers or equals. The weakest album they ever released still stands leagues beyond the efforts of most, and no album of theirs can be called anything short of amazing. I shamelessly admit that Opeth is my favorite band, and that frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt is my personal musical idol, so my excitement was beyond containment when I learned they were performing a special 20th anniversary concert in my backyard. I’ve seen them in concert six times already, but I already knew this would be something beyond an ordinary show. In a statement, Opeth said that they would perform their breakthrough album BLACKWATER PARK in its entirety, followed by a second (yes, a second set!) digging deep into their back catalogue.
