Taking place this September 11th-12th-13th, Wings of Metal is an underground festival bringing the finest quality and cutting-edge Doom, Heavy, NWOBHM, Thrash, Black and Death bands together for a weekend of pure metal insanity.
The legendary dark New Wave of British Heavy Metal band ANGEL WITCH has just been added to the festival’s line-up. Not having played in North America since the 1990s, this very special and unique performance is going to be their first Canadian appearance ever!
They’ll be joined by the legendary 80’s Swedish death/thrash metal band MEFISTO (who is doing their first concert ever), the French speed metal band VULCAIN, and more to be announced!
Wings of Metal takes place at Canada’s best punk and metal venue, The Katacombes, in downtown Montreal. Weekend passes and individual day tickets will be available for purchase on March 4th.

NWOBHM heroes TYSONDOG will release new studio album titled “Cry Havoc”, on April 20, 2015, on Rocksector Records. “Cry Havoc” will include 12 brand new songs, one of them titled “Shadow Of The Beast” is available as a free single at www.soundcloud.com/rocksector
Back in 1984, amongst the music press, renowned journalists such as Malcolm Dome, Geoff Barton & Dante Bonutto were tipping TYSONDOG for major success, emerging at that time from the force that had become known as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. One way or another, the fates conspired to deprive TYSONDOG of the international fame that so many thought they were destined for and in time the band disappeared from the limelight. Nevertheless, TYSONDOG’s rich history was not forgotten & having re-started their engines, have gradually worked their way back with a new perspective on life and the band is happy to see that people are taking notice. The power, precision and impact of their live performances are winning many new fans, as well as re-awakening old ones. Those qualities in the live performances have transferred to the studio setting equally well and “Cry Havoc” is the shining result. “Cry Havoc” was recorded at BLAST Studios in Newcastle, UK, and produced by Jeff ‘Mantas’ Dunn – founding member of VENOM and MPIRE OF EVIL.
The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal pioneers TYGERS OF PAN TANG, will release a special limited edition album titled “Tygers Sessions: The First Wave” via Skol Records. The CD will be limited to only 1000 copies, and will include 11 classic songs of the band, re-recorded for the anniversary EP releases: “The Wildcat Sessions” and “The Spellbound Sessions”, which were originally available through the band’s fan-club and website only, and quickly sold out. The album’s cover artwork has been painted by Italian artist Roberto Toderico, known for his artistic calibration’s with numerous Rock and Metal acts. Special promo clip with new version of the classic cut “Gangland” can be streamed on this location: http://youtu.be/U_HPLC9QgN8
The “Tygers Sessions: The First Wave” CD will be released on February 28, 2015, and will include thick booklet with lyrics, liner notes, and lot of previously unseen pictures. Commented TYGERS OF PAN TANG founding member and guitarist, Robb Weir, “I am very proud of the band’s history as well as the current lineup. We should never forget the TYGERS history and hope this shows we will always recognise the early days of the band. There are a lot of bands that want to modernise their sound or image and forget what made them great in the beginning… I am not one of them”. “We are very pleased with the end result, in particular with the recorded sound achieved, it really does capture the early ’80s NWOBHM spirit and feel we were looking for. To achieve that raw, almost ‘live’ vibe to the sound, we even replicated the microphone positioning that was used on the original recording” he adds.
In other news, TYGERS OF PAN TANG confirmed several new tour dates:

Satan’s Fall Tour 2014
with Slough Feg, Magic Circle and Space Vacation
October 25, 2014
Elbo Room, San Francisco
Photos and Review by Monika Deviat
Satan’s Fall 2014 tour only had one exclusive Canadian data in Toronto. So in order to the see the band and have a vacation in an interesting city, I travelled to San Francisco, arriving on October 25, 2014, the same day Satan was playing in the Bay area. It was Satan’s first time in the west coast city and tickets to the show at the Elbo Room put on by Lucifer’s Hammer had sold fast. It was a cool experience to see the legendary NWOBHM band in a venue that has so much history in the punk and metal scene of San Francisco.
Smokin’ Valves: A Headbanger’s Guide To 900 NWOBHM Records
Taking cue from the do-it-yourself attitude of their country’s punk movement, Britain’s up-and-coming heavy metal bands that comprised the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) were not content to wait for record labels to come knocking. Instead, they took to issuing their own music, typically in the form of 7 inch singles but also 12s and full-length album, many indie, some on small labels, and some on the major labels smart enough to get on board (essentially EMI and MCA).
Martin Popoff, author of 45 books on heavy metal (and at 7900, writer of more record reviews than anybody in history across all genres), has undertaken the task of documenting virtually every record large and wee from heavy metal’s most fabled period (beginning essentially in ‘79 with a hard stop at 1983) providing catalogue information, mini reviews as only he can do, plus a gob of thumbnails of those wonderful 7” picture sleeves and LP covers.
Note: the lion’s share of the material in Smokin’ Valves: A Headbanger’s Guide To 900 NWOBHM Records combines rewritten and expanded text from Martin’s long out-of-print The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Singles plus the relevant reviews of full-length albums from his Collector’s Guide series, specifically the ‘70s and ‘80s book. These reviews have also experienced judicious editing and rewrites.
– includes a few hundred rare 45 picture sleeve and album cover images
– every record rated out of 10
– layout designed so that albums are distinguished from 7”, 10” and 12” singles/EPs by larger, bolder typestyle
– label, year of release and catalogue number for almost every entry
– two appendices, displaying all 9’s and 10’s for singles as opposed to LPs
Final note, one thing I like about an experience like this book in the internet age, hopefully the idea is that you will read some of these glowing 8 to 10 rated reviews of hopelessly obscure singles you ain’t never going to get alerted to otherwise, and then check out if they can be heard and enjoyed on youtube (many of them can!), so you can decide for yourself, or begin some sort of whacky digital collection of this stuff to park in yer metal library. In that respect, I’m just being a DJ that instead of talking, types.
