Trying to find to the O2 Academy was a bit of fun; I have never been before and didn’t realise that it’s pretty much inside a shopping centre!
Once I had arrived on this cold wet night, I was shocked to find out that three of the bands were not performing, due to a travel mishap on the way to the venue. But, in my opinion, two of the best bands had made it!
Legendary NILE vocalist/guitarist Karl Sanders makes a guest appearance on vocals on the song ‘Shunq (To The Despaired…King Of Darkness)’. This particular song is special to us as it marks the first extreme metal track EVER to include both Arabic lyrics mixed in with English lyrics, and who better else to have come on board and collaborate on this theme with us than the legendary Karl Sanders!
“Psychogenocide” is set to be released in Europe through Lifeforce Records on April 29, 2011 (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and May 2, 2011 in the rest of Europe & UK.
Before a performance in Chicago, Karl Sanders, leadman for the Egyptian-themed Death Metal band NILE, takes a break from practicing his chops to talk to Hank Pearl of THE DAILY ROCK (http://www.thedailyrock.com) about the greatness that is the National Geographic channel and how it has been inspiring new lyrics. He also discusses new ideas for future music videos and Sanders jams throughout. Sanders also mentions the appearance of gothic belly-dancers as part of the band’s demographic of fanfare as well as why the band refrains from dressing up as Pharaohs and mummies for sake of their music’s thematic imagery.

NILE’s latest state-of-the-death-metal-art release Those Whom the Gods Detest. Produced and mixed by Neil Kernon (NEVERMORE, CANNIBALCORPSE, QUEENSRYCHE), along with a stellar drum recording job by Erik Rutan (CANNIBAL CORPSE, VITALREMAINS, GOATWHORE), Those Whom the Gods Detest features the bands strongest production and perhaps their best material to date!
Tasmania’s technical death metallers PSYCROPTIC have announced a series of North American headlining dates in the middle of and following their tour with NILE. Confirmed tour dates for the „Those Whom The Gods Detest Tour II“ and their headlining shows are as follows…
Italian death metal squad Hour Of Penance’s latest album, THE VILE CONCEPTION, is a piece of utter death metal from beginning to end. The four-piece has already started working on the follow-up. The band’s leader Guilio Moschini goes back in time recalling how Hour Of Penance started out, why the band had to go through some line-up changes and finally sheds some light on working on the fourth album. THE VILE CONCEPTION is definitely a must-have for every die-hard death metal freak.
What a superb billing! The (almost) perfect combination of bands to showcase the main strands of death metal: the technical American school, represented by Nile, vs the Swedish movement with Grave in its corner. Technicality and brutality on the one hand, dirty moshing and midtempo menace on the other. A match made in heaven, and this was reflected in the crowd; a sold-out Underworld for a death metal gig, on a Friday night when Paradise Lost/Anathema/My Dying Bride were bringing the first wave of British death/doom back to Britain at the Forum in Kentish Town. To many, the choice was simple, but there were equal amounts of people who agonised over which gig to attend. On the night however, the numbers swelling the Underworld reflected how many true death metal fans there are in London, and the people who turned up in the hopes of getting a ticket off the touts were largely left disappointed.
"No Pain No Gain" as Scorpions used to sing, but the last weekend of June in the central park of Helsinki was nothing but pure pain from the beginning to the end in a good way. The Tuska Open Air metal festival has been taken place ten years in a row. The first festival took place at the Tavastia club back in 1998. As the years passed by, the festival has grown bigger and carved out its prestigious and now legendary reputation all around the world.
Traditional metal had a minor role on the roster of Tuska 2008. Extreme metal, in different forms, attracted and had drawn many extreme metal hearts. As well, metalcore bands KillSwitch Engage landed at Tuska for the first time with a massive impact. The younger audience appeared to be delighted about that. Power metal had the strongest presence as it had a dominating role last year. But booking Slayer, Carcass, and Morbid Angel were extreme brilliant achievements.
Even though the festival was sold out several months ago, the most surprising thing from the Tuska organization was to let people of the age of 70+ go in for free! All in all a few hundred metal grandpa and grandma’s were witnessed headbanging for several bands!!!
As usual, the whole three piece Finnish Metal-Rules.Com squad attended Tuska again to sense a reek of putrefaction, feel raining blood and obtain the pleasure to kill. Enjoy!!
The cherishers of ancient Egyptian mythology Nile, have been touring hard for their latest album, ITHYPHALLIC. The album has been breaking some chart positions in many countries, and naturally strengthening Nile´s own position as one of the leaders of today´s death metal scene. The band is undoubtedly in its best strike nowadays – and their album sales prove that even more firmly.
The Nile war troops hit Helsinki on one cold evening on November 24th, 2007 – and only just 2 hours before the scheduled showtime, I managed to talk briefly to Karl Sanders about the ongoing tour, their latest bone-crusher ITHYPHALLIC and even a bit more regarding Nile´s future plans.
NILE - Karl Sanders Interviewed by Simon Lukic Transcribed by Murphy
Nile has been turning heads for years now and is one of a few bands who have taken Death Metal into uncharted waters. Their latest effort ITHYPHALLIC will soon see a worldwide release in July and is sure to be another crushing affair – if the two new tracks aired during their last tour of Australia in May are anything to go by. The following interview was conducted with the ever accommodating Karl Sanders, one of the scenes most unassuming and talented musicians.
Karl Sanders – The guitarist & vocalist of Nile Interview and live/off-stage pictures by Luxi Lahtinen
The US catacomb warriors Nile hit on the Finnish soil on May 1st 2006 for the very 1st time, having touring mates Yyrkoon from France and Australian Psycroptic along with them. This was Nile´s 2nd leg of the European tour, a continuation for their successful “Annihilation of the Wicked” world tour which started last year.
Since the band was in Finland for the very 1st time, I felt an urgent need to find out why they had so well managed to avoid coming to Finland before – amongst other things, like a common brotherhood of metal fans, the troubles the band faced in Estonia, voodoo witchery and so on.
It was the vocalist and guitarist of Nile, Karl Sanders who I found taking pictures outside of the venue with his digicamera, about 3 hours before their gig. While he was taking some pictures from one of the harbours of Helsinki, I decided to join him, and the recorder was put rolling after his permission…
Pete & Chief of NILE Interviewed Jan. 24, 1999 by EvilG
If you are into the heavier side of metal and death metal, you?ve probably already heard of NILE. If not, then it?s high time you checked them out. Nile are not just your typical death metal band like so many of the other second generation wannabes. It?s great to hear a US band belch out something so brutal, yet at the same time original, and worthy of high praise!
