NILE – Interview with Karl Sanders

July 24th, 2015

Interview with guitarist/vocalist Karl Sanders

Egyptian-themed death metal titans Nile marked their 20th anniversary in 2013 and are marching confidently forward toward their 25th. The band’s eighth studio album, What Should Not Be Unearthed, is their most effectively punishing release since 2005’s Annihilation Of The Wicked – and stands in marked contrast to the squeaky clean, surgical precision of 2012’s At The Gate Of Sethu.

Where Sethu was about dexterity, Unearthed is more about brutality. The technical proficiency remains, it’s just got a lot more balls to go with it this time. It was a calculated move, according to founding guitarist/vocalist Karl Sanders, but one the band – rounded out by guitarist/vocals Dalls Toler-Wade, drummer George Kollias and new bassist/vocalist Brad Parris – felt they needed to make. And with more than two decades in the underground trenches under their belts, who could argue otherwise.

In a wide-ranging phone interview from the band’s home base of South Carolina, Sanders offered the following about the mindset of Nile going into What Should Not Be Unearthed and the creative process, the trials and tribulations of touring and even the confederate flag debate that was raging in his adoptive home state and elsewhere at the time following the recent race-related mass murder in Charleston.

NILE ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM WHAT SHOULD NOT BE UNEARTHED

May 26th, 2015
NILE - WHAT SHOULD NOT BE UNEARTHED

NILE – WHAT SHOULD NOT BE UNEARTHED

The reigning kings of technical, historically-themed brutality, NILE, are currently in the studio wrapping up the mix of their upcoming album What Should Not Be Unearthed.

Produced by NILE and mixed by Neil Kernon. The album will be released late summer via Nuclear Blast Records.

Mastermind Karl Sanders states:

“All of us in NILE are happy to announce our newest album What Should Not Be Unearthed. It’s our 8th official album, and this time we believe we have a truly crushing disc to bring to metal fans. The focus this time around is on brutally heavy metal riffing and songwriting; kind of like of an Annihilation Of The Wicked approach but very streamlined to achieve maximum destructive impact. Our last record, At The Gates Of Sethu, was super surgically clean and very “musicianship oriented” whereas the new disc is a polar opposite; Unearthed is aimed straight at utter metal heaviness and memorable songwriting. Although Unearthed is still full of the kind of undeniable musicianship people have come to expect from NILEover the years, it’s the songs themselves that will hit listeners over the head this time around. These songs will be a blast to play live, and we are stoked at the opportunity to bring these songs to metal fans everywhere. See you on tour!”

Nile

There is a slight chill setting in around The Garage as September’s autumnal cool begins to set in around London; becoming most apparent with the quantity of Nile fans queuing outside donning customary hoodies and jackets.
Little did we all know that the warmer choice of attire would soon prove problematic as the evening served up a scorching example in death metal.

The 7th Of December 2012

Nosturi Helsinki

Finland

When the co-tour package consisting of Kreator, Morbid Angel, Nile and the young thrash guns Fueled By Fire was announced, it wasn’t any shock as the tickets were sold out. Generally, these kinds of packages definitely pull hundreds of people to shows, resulting a number of sold out gigs. The whole Nosturi club was entirely packed and full when about 600 metal freaks crawled to testify these four bands in action. The night was a real dream come true for all the fans to witness these leading names on the metal map on the same night and the whole gig was a worth every cent for sure. Sweating raging pits were rolling all night long and the Metal-Rules.com was at present for obvious reasons.

NILE Debut “Enduring the Eternal Molestation of Flame” Video!

November 21st, 2012

The reigning kings of technical historically-themed brutality, NILE, have posted the music video for “Enduring the Eternal Molestation of Flame”. The clip was produced and directed by Jon Simvonis for Magnum Production Studios Co. and Arctos Broadcast Facilities. It also features the African Heritage group and photography by Philippos Kokkalis.

“It was truly an honor to direct the new NILE video; a band with so many diehard fans and such a strong impact in the metal scene,” commented Simvonis. “The video concept, as a matter of fact, was inspired by the culture and the ritual habits of the Ancient Nubia, a region along the Nile River, which is located in northern Sudan and Southern Egypt. The research and design elements of the video led to a really interesting combination of the Ancient Egyptian myths, through the prism of the Nubian African Voodoo Burial rituals. Two worlds set so close, yet so far from each other.”

NILE will tour the United States once again this March and April with 28 shows supported by three of the best local bands in every market. NILE will play two massive sets with music spanning their prolific, twenty year career. Exclusive pre-sale tickets are available now at EnterTheVault.com.

“In order to commemorate our 20th year as a band,” states guitarist/vocalist Karl Sanders, “we want to bring NILE and all metal fans an evening of NILE music that spans our entire career and play two full sets with only a brief intermission. After years of many package tours, the necessary set time restrictions have often meant that NILE’s had to streamline our set. Fans didn’t always get to hear the songs they came to hear. Thankfully, some of those classic NILE songs we have been itching to play for years will now get a chance to be heard live. We are extremely fired up.”

“Another facet of this tour which was very important to us,” continues Sanders, “we have asked promoters to include the best three local bands from their respective areas on the bill. Supporting local bands in each city is a way for us to give something back to younger bands and the metal scene. We’ve asked promoters to keep ticket prices low, so that fans of all ages can come and join us for an evening of metal. In these difficult times of our recessionary economy, an evening of killer metal shouldn’t have to break the bank. NILE are going to do our part: biting the bullet and rolling the dice to bring metal fans in the USA an unforgettable evening with NILE for a reasonable ticket price. We are sincerely looking forward to seeing all our friends and fans at the shows in 2013!”
