EXCITING NEWS! We are proud to announce the release of our first single called ‘Élan’, which will be out on February 13, 2015 via Nuclear Blast!
“Oh, while I live to be the ruler of life, Not a slave
To meet life as a powerful conqueror, and nothing exterior to me will ever take command of me.”
– Walt Whitman
Commented NIGHTWISH keyboardist and songwriter Tuomas Holopainen: “This beautiful quote from my hero Uncle Walt was the starting point for writing ‘Élan’. The underlying theme of the song is nothing less than the meaning of life, which can be something different for all of us. It´s important to surrender yourself to the occasional ‘free fall’ and not to fear the path less travelled by. ‘Élan’ is a wonderful teaser for the full-length album, giving out a little taste, but revealing very little of the actual Journey of Grandeur to come…”
NIGHTWISH ANNOUNCE HEADLINING NORTH AMERICAN TOUR FOR 2015
Finland-based symphonic metal storytellers NIGHTWISH are pleased to announce their 27-date headlining tour of North America for 2015, launching in New York City on April 9th, hitting three Canadian cities plus Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, then closing out in Silver Springs, Maryland on May 14th. Opening will be Dutch symphonic metallers DELAIN.
Checking in from the other side of the world amidst all the prep work for recording their new studio album, NIGHTWISH member Marco Hietala shares the following about the band’s return to North America:
“Hi to all! Our work on the new album has been going with serious productive speed and comfortable ease at the same time. It´s going to be great to get it out to you and play these pieces live. And with this announcement it will obviously happen quite soon! Here are the dates for the North-American shows. Come on over and we´ll raise hell and kick some arses together!”
Finland-based symphonic metal storytellers NIGHTWISH have just released the fourth “Making Of” trailer for their as-yet-untitled eighth studio album featuring new Dutch vocalist Floor Jansen. Watch Episode 4, “The Beginning of the Summer Camp,” on the Nuclear Blast YouTube channel:
“You have to remember that the last time we played together was about 11 months ago,” commented longtime drummerJukka Nevalainen – who is sitting out on the recording sessions due to health issues – about the band’s first rehearsal. (Kai Hahto [WINTERSUN, SWALLOW THE SUN, TREES OF ETERNITY] is replacing him.) “It’s been quite a while, so all things considered out, initial stabs were pretty okay.”
“You start to get into the songs when you rehearse them,” adds NIGHTWISH guitarist Emppu Vuorinen. “We played a heavier tune, and it did get me moshing a bit. I don’t know if it has something to do with age – but the need to show off has diminished even more. It’s more like you want to do justice to the song and not strut your stuff.”
Finland-based symphonic metal sextet NIGHTWISH have just released the third “Making Of” trailer for their as-yet-untitled eighth studio album, which will be the first to feature new Dutchvocalist Floor Jansen, who has toured with the band since October 2012.
“For me, [new music] always starts with the emotional surge and subject matter,“ states band founder, keyboardist, and songwriter Tuomas Holopainen. “When I come up with a subject for the song, I always see it as a short movie. Each song is like a soundtrack for that movie in my head. That’s how the songs are born.“
The below message was posted by the official Nightwish page this morning.
“How to begin telling something that you wouldn’t want to have to tell, although you know that the decision you made is the only (at least the only right) one you could make at the moment? I face this dilemma now, and will do my best to find the right words.
For a number of years, I have suffered from occasional but very difficult insomnia, something that has been my unwanted companion during many of our tours, too. I’ve done my best to try to control it or at least to cope with it. Still, we don’t even really know why we need sleep, so unfortunately there’s not much information available on why some of us suffer from sleeplessness. There is no 100% cure for the problem.
During the last month, it has become evident for me that due to my insomnia, I can’t fulfill my duties as a musician in the way that I’d want and with the precision that the music deserves. Thus I have decided to step aside from my duties as the drummer of Nightwish during the recording of the forthcoming album and the subsequent tour. I will still be involved in managing the day-to-day affairs of the band, but the dearest and the most important thing, playing, is, for the time being, not possible. Time will tell what the future holds.
On a personal level, my decision obviously feels indescribably sad. Fortunately, looking at it with some distance, it is “just” part of the constant, inevitable ebb and flow of life. The sad things are part of it as well as the beautiful, unforgettable experiences and adventures that I’ve already had the pleasure to experience in spades. Surely, there will still be many adventures ahead, too.
My good friend Kai Hahto will play drums on the forthcoming album. I’m extremely grateful that he didn’t hesitate for a minute when he decided to help us in this challenging situation. What comes to touring, everything is still open, but we will let you know as soon possible what the line-up will be.
If beginning this was hard, so is ending it. So maybe I will just quote something fitting.
“You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are.”― Eckhart Tolle
Best regards, Jukka Nevalainen / Nightwish”

Finland-based symphonic metal act NIGHTWISH are proud to announce their newly-inked North American deal for the U.S. and Canada via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The band’s as-yet-untitled eighth studio album will be the first to feature new Dutchvocalist Floor Jansen, who has toured with the band since October 2012.
Expanding the territory of NIGHTWISH’s initial European collaboration with Nuclear Blast‘s HQ in Germany since 2004’s Oncealbum, NBE President and A&R Chief Monte Conner looks forward to the growth of the band’s new line-up:
“It was a pleasure to work with NIGHTWISH at my former label, but now in my new capacity at NBE, I will be more directly involved with the band than ever before. I would like to thank NIGHTWISH and their management for their continued faith in and loyalty to me. I am particularly excited at the prospect of hearing Floor Jansen’s debut studio recording with the band. Her performance on last year’s live release Showtime, Storytime completely blew me away and proved why she is the PERFECT singer for NIGHTWISH.”
Nightwish have posted the first episode of their new album recording series, sharing a part of the atmosphere from the cabin where the process is taking place. The band’s eighth record is tentatively due out this spring via Nuclear Blast Records, marking the follow-up to 2011’s “Imaginaerum.”
Settled in the middle of Finish wilderness, the group was filmed moving into the cabin and discussing important matters regarding future plans, touring, time scheduling, promotion and more. Mainman Tuomas Holopainen had previously spent two weeks with producer Tero “TeeCee” Kinnunen, recording demos of the new tunes.
“From the moment I start writing the song, I have the story in my head. I have a really clear vision how the songs should sound like at this point. Of course, they will change after band rehearsals and arranging. And they should change,” the keyboardist commented.
“A big hello from Hattula, Finland. Tero (“TeeCee” Kinnunen) and I have been here for the past 2,5 weeks recording a demo of the new Nightwish songs.
It has come together beautifully and we now have a total of 12 songs to work with. We are all very eager to finally get together and start the rehearsals in July. If everything goes as scheduled, we should have the ready album in our hands by the end of January 2015.
It`s still too early to analyze the material more closely, but the album will once again explore all the ends of the spectrum, bringing the very best out of the newcomers Floor and Troy. And stealthily the album ended up having a theme running through it.
Excited beyond words now! Best wishes to you all, Tuomas”

Tuomas Holopainen – Music Inspired by the Life and Time of Scrooge
Nightwish’s mastermind, Tuomas Holopainen is a big fan of Disney. When he met with a famous comic book by Don Rosa, “The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck”, a childhood dream came true after 15 years in the making. Finally, he published the kind of soundtrack to the famous comic under the blessings of Don Rosa who is very proud of Holopainen’s effort. In addition, despite his eye problem, Rosa illustrated the great cover artwork for the first solo album of Tuomas Holopainen.
Personally speaking, I was very lucky because my parents gave me Don Rosa’s “The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck” as a Christmas gift and this is kinda nostalgia to me. What I do know is that emotions stemming from something that I call as nostalgic are riveting. Euphoria and great memories overwhelm and ply me, creating a feeling of intimacy and safety that only a few things can be compared. To read the “Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck” by Don Rosa is one of the most favorite and most vivid memories of my childhood and this album was one nostalgic punch in the stomach. Reading once again and now listening the soundtrack of “The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck” is one of the most favorite and fascinating things I can do in my entire life.
MUSIC INSPIRED BY THE LIFE AND TIME OF SCROOGE album could be the soundtrack of a possible film version of “The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck” in a more gothic and epic version of events captured by Don Rosa. I have say to all of you (especially the Nightwish fans) that this record is completely different and unlike any Nightwish albums/songs and should be treated as such.
His compositions are just in the pace of the comic book, the series follows the most basic chapters of the book and manage to transform the image into sound very easily and successfully. The album starts with “Glasgow 1877”, where Scrooge introduces us to the story, putting it in Glasgow in 1877 when he was already at the age of ten, on the eve of his birthday. That was when his father took him to see for the first time the primitive and ancient territories of their family and where their castle was; the castle now is destroyed and abandoned. The cinematic journey into the adventures of Scrooge begins here, with Holopainen’s the orchestral melodies being the center of melodies and reminiscing the majestic and epic stories of Don Rosa.
“Into The West” refers to the first adventures of our star in the U.S. in 1883, includes a sick and burning banjo’n’harmonica catchy melody. “Dreamtime” launches with a dynamic intro with didgeridoo-a traditional Australian wind instrument- which predisposes to the great adventures of Scrooge into the wild. The first three tracks, “Glasgow 1877” (it doesn’t count as a full song) cover only some of trips of Scrooge, whilst the rest of the songs focus on two main themes. The first revolves around Scrooge’s first steps as a young gold digger in Yukon, in a quest to become ” the richest duck in the world”. This ‘chapter’ focuses on his adventures as a prospector searching for gold in the torrent of the Agony and the treasure he found there, whether he refers to the legendary gold nugget as big as a goose egg or the icy heart of Golden Goldie, the Golden Compass. The second theme that this album undertakes, relates to more abstract concepts such as feats, the importance and meaning of memories, the meaning of heritage. These tracks are structured with more vocals and choirs than the other ones. In particular, there is a more symphonic musical facet here.
Don Rosa’s comic masterpiece has found the perfect soundtrack for Scrooge McDuck’s adventure. Don Rosa is one of the best story tellers of our days, Tuomas Holopainen is one of the most prominent composers of our days… MUSIC INSPIRED BY THE LIFE AND TIME OF SCROOGE is a brilliant old-fashioned storytelling fun transformed into cinematic music making Scrooge McDuck dynasty famous than ever.

TIMO TOLKKI’S AVALON to release sophomore album “Angels of the Apocalypse” with an amazing cast of singers ! Out in May on Frontiers
Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release of TIMO TOLKKI’S AVALON sophomore album, “Angels of the Apocalypse” on May 16th in Europe and May 20th in North America.
Following the release of the debut album “The Land of New Hope”, the “Metal Opera” was met with critical and fan acclaim, entering the national album charts in seven European countries, including a top 10 entry in Tolkki’s home country, Finland. In August 2013, Tolkki flew to Greece to seek the right inspiration for the follow-up album and upon his return he managed to develop a sound that is even more grandiose and symphonic and yet heavier and darker in direction as compared to the debut album. “In August 2012 I planned to release a Metal Opera that had to be a trilogy. I am following a specific storyboard in a musical format and this time the musical direction is heavier and darker than the previous Avalon” says Tolkki. ”This was deliberate since the Apocalyptic scenes described in the lyrics demanded that”.
As for the players on the album, Tolkki finally managed to reunite the legendary STRATOVARIUS “Dreamspace” lineup, calling Antti Ikonen and Tuomo Lassila to play keyboards and drums respectively. “It was really nice and brought good vibes and freshness to the album,” tells Timo. “Definitely the right move.”
The amazing cast of vocalists appearing this time includes NIGHTWISH singer Floor Jansen – who takes care of the lead vocals on the first single “Design The Century” – along with Simone Simons (EPICA), Fabio Lione (RHAPSODY OF FIRE), David DeFeis (VIRGIN STEELE), Zachary Stevens (ex-SAVATAGE, CIRCLE II CIRCLE), plus Elize Ryd (AMARANTHE) – who appears again after contributing to the first album – and the stunning Chilean singer Caterina Nix, who is working on her debut album which is also produced by Tolkki. “Some songs were written with a specific singer in mind, while for some others I decided based on the knowledge that I had on how he or she would perform. I am particularly happy of how this record sounds especially two songs You’ll Bleed Forever and the 10 minute title track are among my favourite ever”, says Tolkki.
Once again the stunning artwork is provided by the French artist Stanis W. Decker and the first pressing of the physical edition will be available in a glossy digipak.
Tuomas Holopainen’s debut solo single, A Lifetime of Adventure, will be released on the Nightwish FanPOD tablet-computer app on 23 January 2014, two weeks before its world premiere.
The Nightwish FanPOD update will also include a music video for the new single directed by Ville Lipiäinen and Mika Jussila’s photos of Tuomas Holopainen and Don Rosa in the recording studio.
A Lifetime of Adventure, from the upcoming solo album, Music Inspired by the Life and Times of Scrooge, will be released worldwide on 7 February 2014. The cover artwork on both the single and the album is by Don Rosa, the illustrator of Disney’s Duck characters. Nightwish FanPOD is available on iTunes App Store and Google Play.
