Here we are again… The mighty Jalometalli Open Air Metal festival strikes back once again with a killer line-up to maintain its metallic lofty status on the Finnish festival map. The festival is known for relying on an old school metal approach offering traditional metal to extreme metal. The festival offered a great deal of bands from the classic metal to the extreme black metal. The festival had also paid attention to young rising and local bands which had been placed to play at the small third sage. That was unique and thankfully most of the bands sounded killer. The Metal Rules team hit the ground of Oulu to testify several absolutely killer bands. The whole Jalometalli as a festival is so unique and one of kind that anyone reading this article should take a glance at the offering of the festival. Here is a brief article on the fest.

The next installment of Craig Locicero of FORBIDDEN’s Ωmega Wave podcast will host guitarist Mitch Harris of Napalm Death. Tune in to the show this Sunday, September 4th at 6:30 p.m. PACIFIC / 9:30 p.m. EASTERN at this location.
States Locicero:
“Mitch is an American citizen who’s been living in the U.K. for many years. He has a different perspective being in another continent than the rest of us living here on a day-to-day basis. This week Bill [Shields] and I are going to discuss the post-9/11 world. It’s the 10th Anniversary since the attacks and we are asking ourselves some questions… What’s worse? What’s better? Has any justice truly been served? Were we all being told the truth about the attackers identities and motives? Has America and the rest of the world learned anything from that tragic day? These questions are sure to raise anger and passion in some individuals, but that’s what we do on our show. Ask tough questions!
“This should be a powerful show as Mitch was a excellent guest when we had him on with Jon Schaffer for a round table discussion a few months ago.”
Locicero and his co-host “Barbwire” Bill Shields (former host for “In the Dark” Radio, professional wrestler, and current Ordained Minister of the Collective Conscious) will speak off-the-cuff on whatever controversial subject may come up. The goals of the Ωmega Wave Podcast are two-fold:
1) To speak to different compelling and controversial lyricists in Metal and Hard Rock weekly. They will be asked about their motivation, their craft, and what exactly inspires them in these challenging times to do what they do. Their thoughts & opinions on the most current affairs and intensely debated issues will also be discussed.
2) Have listeners sit in on a real conversation between good friends without censorship watering those thoughts down. Hosts Bill and Craig will take questions & topic suggestions live and do not filter their reactions to them. These conversations can get very heated at times, depending on the topic.
Previous guests include: Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth, Sons of Liberty), Peter Dolving of The Haunted, Henrik Ohlsson (Scar Symmetry), Barney Greenway of Napalm Death, Neil Fallon (Clutch, the Company Band), C.J. “The Metal Motivator” Ortiz, Charles Elliott of Abysmal Dawn, and Mr. Axe from Anonymous.
Listen to the tracks “Forsaken At The Gates” and “Dragging My Casket” from FORBIDDEN’s 2010 reunion album, Omega Wave, here.

The undisputed leaders of the extreme, NAPALM DEATH, just finished a new video clip for the song “On The Brink Of Extinction”. The track is taken from the stunning “Time Waits For No Slave” album and the video manages to perfectly mix the intensity of NAPALM DEATH live with the shocking brutality of mankind.
Singer Mark “Barney” Greenway explains the meaning behind “On The Brink Of Extinction”: “As regards the meaning of the song, we wanted to convey that the process of evolution is an amazing thing, but also to say that as human beings we have the ability to assist where other beings suffer. In other words, we don’t just let the rule of ‘survival of the fittest’ dictate that we should just stand back and either allow things to go into decline or participate in it.”
The video was recorded and edited by Daniel Brand with animations by Danny Bacchus and you can check out the video clip on the band’s official MySpace Profile and leave your comment: www.myspace.com/napalmdeath
Furthermore, the band is currently crisscrossing the globe from Europe over to Australia and Japan before returning to Europe on the Campaign For Musical Destruction Tour in November/December 2010 with Immolation, Waking The Cadaver and more. Stay tuned for more details and see below all upcoming shows by the masters of grindcore!

For an introduction to what Bloodstock Open Air is all about, check out my preview of it here. Suffice it to say that BOA is the only proper UK outdoor metal festival that is devoted to true metal of all genres. This would be the first time I was making the trip up to the Midlands to cover this amazing festival.
Reaching there late Thursday night, we set up camp and went off to explore. BOA has one of the most random things I’d expect at a metal festival: a shisha tent! Armed with a 1.5 litre bottle of JD and two bongs of shisha, we spent the night there meeting weird and crazy people (Frida from Sweden, if you’re reading this, get in touch!). After a disgusting fry-up at the All-Day Breakfast bar, I went off to bed to catch some shut-eye before Friday’s bands. Good start to BOA!

South By Southwest (SXSW) is an annual music and film conference/festival held yearly in beautiful Austin, Texas. In the 21 years of its existence, SXSW has served as a launching pad for many unknown bands turned media darlings overnight. For one week in the month of March each year bands from all over the world gather in downtown Austin and showcase their music, their craft, for record executives, media big wigs, and most importantly in my opinion, music lovers!
This all sounds like a splendid and festive occasion with the exception of one detail. SXSW has almost exclusively all but overlooked metal and its many subgenres for its entire existence.
Now I won’t lie. In years past I have seen some cool showcases. Century Media and Relapse usually cart their bands into town, and scattered about my 12 year tenure in Austin I have seen some notable showcases featuring among others In Extremo, Sol Evil, Children Of Bodom, and Grey Skies Fallen. But when 1,400 bands come to town for one week in March each year, you would hope at least, I don’t know, 50-100 of them would be awesome heavy metal, right?
Well, this year Austin got a fair amount of killer metal. Kicking things off on Wednesday, the 12th I had the pleasure of witnessing my first Municipal Waste concert. A day later I got off of work early and headed downtown with some friends and caught a showcase featuring Enslaved, Mixhell, Napalm Death, High On Fire, and the mighty Motorhead.
Lastly, I witnessed the “It’s Grim Up North” showcase featuring Sabaton, 1349 and Enslaved. I partied like a true champion, saw some really, really good performances and got some really solid interviews. Read on metal faithful and I shall guide you through these conversations in steel conducted in my homeland of Austin….Let’s start at the beginning….

Synonymous with the word extreme, Napalm Death has been grinding away since 1982 and is showing no signs of slowing down if the release of 13th album Smear Campaign is any indication. I had the opportunity to talk with guitarist Mitch Harris and was able to cover a few things such as the current tour, the new album and their progression as a band.
