Gigantour, the traveling heavy metal festival created by frontman Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, stopped in Calgary Alta., on February 18, 2012 for the third time since the festival’s inception in 2005. This year’s festival also featured England’s metal legends Motorhead, who probably played a large part in selling out the venue. Italy’s Lacuna Coil and Denmark’s Volbeat rounded out the bill and added a bit of diversity. Unfortunately the tour hit one of the worst large venues in Calgary for sound. The Big Four building is a concrete box with large pillars breaking up the sound and view. Surprisingly though, the overall sound for the evening was fairly decent. One great idea someone had was to have the line-up for doors inside the building. Underneath the hall where the bands played, a corral was set up (how fitting for a city known as Cowtown) for fans to line up (get herded) and stay warm.
THE SUNSET STRIP WILL BE DANCING TO THE AMERICAN BEAT AS HEADCAT PLAYS THE ROXY THEATER IN WEST HOLLYWOOD ON MARCH 17TH
It’s not often that rock fans get the chance to catch Lemmy fronting another band besides the legendary Motörhead. But on March 17th, Lemmy’s rockabilly outfit, HeadCat, will be rocking the Roxy Theater (located at 9009 West Sunset Boulevard, in West Hollywod, California). Joined by Stray Cats drummer Slim Jim Phantom and Rockats guitarist Danny B. Harvey, the trio will be performing tunes from the critically acclaimed ‘Walk the Walk…Talk the Talk,’ which is released via the Niji Entertainment Group.
Lemmy has always been vocal about his love for vintage rock n’ roll and rockabilly, so it’s fitting for one of rock’s truly one-of-a-kind figures to get back to his roots. Speaking to Rolling Stone about the HeadCat, Lemmy described it as “Old time rock & roll, it’s feel-good music. It’s music that would persuade your girlfriend to fuck you later!”
And as evidenced by such standout tracks as “American Beat,” “Shakin’ All Over,” and “Let It Rock,” All Music Guide got it right by declaring “‘Walk the Walk…Talk the Talk’ is a much welcomed arrival in a period that will undoubtedly go down as ‘the Auto-Tune era,’ when the original thrill of raw and real rock & roll has been all but replaced by computer-perfected blahness.”
Don’t pass by this opportunity to catch an intimate performance by a true member of rock royalty, as the March 17th show will undoubtedly be a rockin’ good time. Get your tickets now, before it’s too late!

In other Motörhead news:
– Lemmy, The Movie, the film about Motörhead’s iconic frontman, won Best Film/DVD at the recent Classic Rock Awards in the U.K. and has also received an RIAA Gold sales award in North America.
– Paul Inder, Lemmy’s son, runs a successful recording studio in Los Angeles, Inder Music Studios, where Lemmy has been known to work. Says Paul, “Everyone who has come here so far loves the vibe of the place.”
– In last month’s issue of Revolver Magazine, the cover story was dedicated to the 100 Greatest Living Rock Stars, with Lemmy (of course) among the greats.
– In CMJ’s 2011 year-end charts, Motörhead’s CD, The World Is Yours, was number one on the Loud Rock chart. Upon the record’s release, it spent six weeks at number one on this chart, which is the longest that Motörhead has held that position at radio. Number One!
– We recently told you about Motörhead wine. (Their Shiraz got great reviews: “A fairly grown-up wine – can taste the fruitiness. A panel favorite.” And “A red wine that’s ‘Aces.’”) Now comes Motörhead Vodka. It’s a premium, 80 proof Vodka made from 100% locally grown wheat that has been distilled and bottled in Sweden. It has a rich, full-bodied and complex character, with a light and fruity aftertaste. One reviewer said, “That’s how women sometimes describe Lemmy.”
– In Duff McKagan’s ESPN.com weekly column, he recently wrote about his band, Loaded, opening for Motörhead in Germany. He says, “Being here on the road with Motörhead is to get an awe-inspiring peek into legend. Their consistancy remains a sort of explosive touchstone for all of us who need to be reminded of what is real and true and honest about rock music. Lemmy is still more on top of his game than five 20-year olds combined. If you get a chance to see this band, don’t even try to think twice about it. They are the very best of what it is all about…it’s like going to rock and roll church.”
– Motörhead were recently nominated for a Shorty Award, honoring the best of social media, recognizing the people and organizations producing real-time short form content across the social Web.
– Lemmy performed with Camp Freddy on their last 2011 show, which took place at the at the world famous Roxy on the Sunset Strip on the day before Lemmy’s 66th birthday. Participating in the tribute to Lemmy that night were Slash, Matt Sorum, John Lydon, among others, and also included birthday greetings from Ozzy.
– Lemmy will be part of a Ronnie James Dio tribute album which will be out later this year.
– And finally, two German scientists/academics discovered Motörhead in recent years and wrote an article about them, saying: “This band is loud and fresh, hard and relevant…Motörhead are the hardest trio of the rock world…The band is rocking.”
JUDAS PRIEST vocalist Rob Halford, MOTÖRHEAD’s Lemmy Kilmister, DEEP PURPLE’s Ian Gillan, ALICE COOPER, GLENN HUGHES, SEBASTIAN BACH, CHRIS JERICHO and FOO FIGHTERS mastermind Dave Grohl are all on board for a RONNIE JAMES DIO tribute album.
“I’m letting them pick the song they want to do and the way they want to do it,” Wendy Dio tells Artisan News. Check out the report below:
“I love Sister Sin… I’m so excited about “Rock ‘N Roll” and think it came out great, just fantastic,” commented Doro on the collaboration. See what else Doro had to say about working with SISTER SIN in a new videohere.

Gigantour is a chance to, as Mustaine says, tour with like-minded artists “that play heavy music in a high-energy environment,” with a fan-friendly ticket price. He founded the tour in 2005 and invited such artists as ANTHRAX, DREAM THEATER, FEAR FACTORY, LAMB OF GOD, OPETH, STATIC-X, and IN FLAMES to join Megadeth. For Lacuna Coil, Gigantour 2012 marks a return to the tour, as they performed on the 2007 Australian tour; the Italian heavy metal group’s singer Cristina Scabbia also appeared on Megadeth’ 2007 re-recording of their song, ‘A Tout Le Monde’.
While the original members of BLACK SABBATH – guitarist Tony Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward – appear to be reuniting with one rehearsal already in the can, there’s talk that a tour will happen in early 2012. According to rumours passed along to BraveWords.com, the godfathers of heavy metal will be teaming up with fellow UK metal gods JUDAS PRIEST and the legendary MOTÖRHEAD for a tour of North America in the spring, before Sabbath heads over to Europe for the summer festival season in June/July. More news as it develops. No other details are available at this time. Once again, these should be taken as rumours and have not been confirmed by band management.

Loud music. Pornography. Burning shit to the ground. These are a few of Hesher’s favorite things, and all to the soundtrack of Metallica and Motorhead. And they are what Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) brings into the lives of TJ (Devon Brochu) and his father Paul (Rainn Wilson) when he takes up residence in the garage uninvited. Grief stricken by the loss of TJ’s mother in a car accident, Paul can’t muster the strength to evict the strange squatter and soon the long-haired, tattooed Hesher becomes a fixture in the household. Like a force of nature, Hesher’s anarchy shakes the family out of their grief and helps them embrace life once more.

On July 23rd and 24th, 10 000 metalheads descended upon Downsview Park in Toronto ON for Heavy T.O. The two day festival took place the same weekend as Heavy MTL. This was the third year for Heavy MTL and its success from right from the first year prompted MTL organizers Daniel Glick and Nick Farkas to team up with Live Nation to create Heavy T.O. Two stages had bands playing right after each other, about 11 per day. Heavy T.O. sponsor, Jägermeister had a tent area set up with games and were hosting some of the autograph sessions. Certain bands like Megadeth and Slayer had line-ups of over a hundred people waiting to get signatures from their favorite musicians.
MOTÖRHEAD have issued the following statement regarding the passing of former guitarist Michael “Würzel” Burston who died on July 9th from ventricular fibrillation caused by heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy), at the age of 61:
“We are greatly saddened to confirm that our long-time friend and comrade Würzel died Saturday at his home. Würz was pouring a Guinness and cracking a joke when he succumbed to a heart attack; at least we know he went with a smile. It is a cliche to say that words cannot describe how we feel, and in this case, other than ones such as ‘shit’ and ‘awful’ and ‘very very sad’ it is true, they really can’t. We all shared many many great times together, and what he did for Motörhead is quite simply indelible. As our good friend Steve ‘Krusher’ Joule said, ‘RIP dear Würzel, a rocker and a gentleman.'”
Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister added: “Wurzel was my friend and my brother and he’s never going to laugh with me again or bitch me out or do….anything. And that truly and cosmically SUCKS. RIP Wurz Godspeed. Good Man.”
Würzel recorded nine albums for Motörhead starting with the collection No Remorse (1984) up until Sacrifice (1995).
On July 9th former MOTÖRHEAD guitarist Michael “Würzel” Burston sadly passed away in the UK. He was aged 61. The band has since issued a statement on the passing of former bandmate. A spokesperson for the band told RockAAA their thoughts were with their former guitarists family at this difficult time:
“It was actually Lemmy who gave Würzel his name in the back of a taxi, as he thought he looked like the TV character Worzel Gummidge because of his wild hair.”
The spokesperson went on to explain Würzel’s wife had said he had been unwell for some time with heart trouble, which left him struggling to climb the stairs at home.
As a tribute to their fallen friend, who they described as one of the nicest men, the band requested Rock Radio play ‘Killed By Death’ in tribute, as it was a track co-written by Lemmy and Würzel during a taxi journey from the flat they were sharing at the time and the Brittania Studios.
According to Wikipedia, before joining Motörhead in 1984, Burston had been a corporal in the Army, serving in Germany and Ireland with the 1st Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment, and had played in the bands BASTARD and WARFARE. Joining another relatively unknown guitarist, Phil Campbell, they played together at a Motörhead audition, and both were taken on. Würzel eventually left the band in 1995 and can be heard on the following albums:
No Remorse (1984)
Rock ‘n’ Roll (1987)
Nö Sleep at All (1988)
The Birthday Party (1990)
March ör Die (1992)
More recently, Würzel had launched a new band called LEADER OF THE DOWN, who headlined the main stage at Never Mind The Bullocks!, a fundraising music festival in aid of Midlands Air Ambulance in late June.
