Interview with guitarist/vocalist Mille Petrozza

German thrash metal stalwarts Kreator are winding down what has been a productive 2013 in fine style with the release of their new live DVD/CD Dying Alive, an aptly titled “Legends of Thrash” co-headlining tour of North America with Overkill and Warbringer, and the promise of a busy 2014 already ahead of them. Thirty years into a career that saw them ride the crest of the first wave of thrash in the mid ’80s, come crashing down like much of the rest of the metal world during the ’90s, and enjoy both a musical and commercial resurgence in the new millennium, the band are still going strong and remain vital and relevant.
On the phone from Seattle, Kreator founding guitarist/vocalist Mille Petrozza [who is joined in the band by original drummer Jürgen “Ventor” Reil, Finnish guitarist Sami Yli-Sirniö and bassist Christian “Speesy” Giesle] offered the following about the new DVD, lessons learned over a long career in the trenches, the new and old school of thrash, and getting put on the spot by a pair of 12-year-old girls.

PHANTOM ANTICHRIST being the 13th album of Kreator shows the German Teutonic thrash metal legends are as aggressive and relevant as in the heyday of the 80’s metal. The band’s front man Mille Petrozza is the wanted person for interviews. Metal-Rules.Com got once again a great opportunity of chatting with the German thrash icon about the new album, cover art, producers etc. in the short, but informative interview. But above all Marko found something common to talk about with Mille, namely Kiss, what else?

Embarking on a 36 date jaunt through the United States and Canada in support of "Hordes of Chaos" the 12th studio album released by German thrash metal legends Kreator; frontman Mille Petrozza took some time out of his hectic schedule to talk about the new album, touring with his old friends Exodus, the band’s involvement with PETA, his memories of fallen comrade Chris Witchunter and more…

Nummirock Festival, located basically in the middle of forests, near by one small lake (or more commonly put, located in the middle of nowhere which most of you want me to say anyway, ha!), celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. The organizers of the festival had booked a bunch of interesting metal acts to the bill of this 2-day festival, off which bands like Kreator, Deicide, Hypocrisy, Amorphis, Samael, Marduk, Tarot and Korpiklaani surely gave metalheads a good enough reason to invest their hard-earned savings in for this particular summer happening. Only one negative setback was announced at the very last minutes as Deicide had to pull out from the festival due to some ?ugly? financial issues with the gig booking agency, being responsible for their tour in the European ground (which sadly resulted in the cancellation of the whole European tour for Deicide). That was already the second attempt from Deicide to play in Finland for the very first time, but every time they have had to cancel their shows. Well, that time will come for them eventually for sure when they will finally get a chance to play in front of their very supportive Finnish metal maniacs… ;o)
One of the finest German Thrash Metal combos ever, Kreator, luckily didn?t have to cancel their live appearance at the Nummirock Festival this year though. The band proved to be in a fine, energetic strike in a live situation at the festival, and the support from the crowd was upliftingly enormous toward Kreator. The band has always been greatly welcomed by the Finnish metalheads – no matter where they have played in Finland.
Metal-Rules.com caught up with Mille from Kreator at the backstage area right before the band was about to get confronted with their fanatical (mostly) Finnish audience, and basically asked about what?s going on in the Kreator -camp; when to expect new material from the band, Mille?s endorsement deal with the Moser guitars, etc. – and what Mille actually did on Saturday evening on 20th, May 2006…

Mille Petrozza – Kreator
Interviewed in Jan 2001 by EvilG
This interview was scheduled to be done via phone, but due to time constraints was done via e-mail. Mille was pressed for time so the replies are not the longest. However it does give some insight on what we can expect for the next Kreator CD. Hopefully when that comes out we will get the chance for a proper telephone interview so we can pick Millie’s brain a little better!

The German Thrash Metal pioneers Kreator arrived in Finland on the 7th of March, 2005 to do ?Tuska Winter War?. Along for the tour was the Swedish Dark Tranquillity and the headliners Cradle of Filth. That was also the last date of the European leg for Kreator, which the band had already started in the beginning of February 2005. Kreator was about to head to South America to do a bunch of dates there. The ?Enemy of God? tour has been the most successful Kreator tour for them for many years and they have had sold out shows all over Europe. Kreator?s latest album ENEMY OF GOD has also been doing very well in many countries worldwide, climbing up on several album charts lists, so the fans have really appreciated the band?s latest effort.
I met the always friendly Mille from Kreator just 2 hours before the showtime and we basically focused on talking about their ongoing tour, the band?s well-received ENEMY OF GOD album, Thrash Metal revival in todays?s scene as its own single yet strong phenomenon and tried to spell the band?s Finnish quitarist?s, Sami?s last name correctly… ;=)
