METALLICA TO RELEASE A SPECIAL RECORDING OF BAND’S INTIMATE FAN-ONLY SHOW AT 150-CAPACITY VENUE THE BASEMENT IN NASHVILLE ON NOVEMBER 26TH, 2010
METALLICA’S LIVE AT GRIMEY’S WILL BE RELEASED ON CD AND VINYL, AND SOLD, ALONG WITH OTHER EXCLUSIVES, THROUGH METAL CLUB RETAILERS
Wednesday, October 06, 2010 – Los Angeles, CA – The Music Monitor Network, largest of the independent record store coalitions with stores in both the US and Canada –is proud to announce the launch of Metal Club. Metal Club is a group of record stores throughout the US and Canada that work to connect the vibrant metal community with their local record store. Fans will be able to visit their local Metal Club store for special metal promotional pieces, exciting in-store events, and a series of exclusive Metal Club releases, starting with today’s announcement from Metallica.
On June 12th, 2008, multi-platinum rock band Metallica staged an intimate, surprise performance at The Basement, an 150-capacity venue below Nashville record store Grimey’s New & Preloved Music. In attendance were ecstatic Metallica fan club members from all over the world, Grimey’s staffers, and a few lucky friends.
Now the explosive energy of that hot and sweaty, bursting to the rafters show, which took place the night before Metallica played the Bonnaroo Festival, has been captured on the recording Live at Grimey’s, which will be released by Warner Bros. Records on the day after Thanksgiving, November 26th. “To have a band of the magnitude of Metallica actually come into a record store, set up and record a live performance, and then provide it to record stores so that they can have it on the shelves for the holidays is fantastic,” says Metal Club head honcho, Michael Kurtz. “Music is something special and not just a disposable commodity. Being able to provide metal fans and record stores with something this special is exceptionally gratifying. This is going to be the gift that every metal fan is going to want this holiday season.”
Live at Grimey’s, which includes such highlights as “Welcome Home (Sanitarium),” a blistering “Master of Puppets,” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” will be released on standard CD plus as a limited-edition two-disc set on regular-weight 10″ vinyl with a gatefold jacket. The release date is Black Friday, November 26, 2010.
Live at Grimey’s will be distributed by the Coalition of Independent Music Stores’ distribution company, Junketboy, and sold exclusively at Metal Club stores, which include independent record stores across the country, along with Hastings stores. Please visit www.mymetalclub.com for a list of all potential participating retailers.

Australia’s Video Hits recently interviewed METALLICA’s James Hetfield. During the 22-minute video, which can be seen below, the subject of 2011 marking the band’s 30th anniversary and subsequent celebrations was discussed.
Hetfield commented, “We’ve gotta do something; there’s no doubt about that. There are quite a few bands that have made it 30 years, but these days, I think it’s getting a little harder to survive 30 years. The fact that we made it 30 years is pretty unbelievable.”
Metallica will wrap up their 2010 tour with a string of 15 sold out shows in New Zealand and Australia, running October 13th to November 21st.

The Big 4: METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX
Austria’s Stormbringer.at webzine conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine when the band played in Vienna on July 1, 2010. Watch the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).
On whether “Big Four” tour [featuring METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX] is something special for him or if it’s just “another MEGADETH tour”:
Mustaine: “Of course it’s special. It’s historical. It’s life-changing for a lot of people that were there. And I think the bragging rights for people who actually witnessed it versus somebody who saw it on YouTube or saw it in a movie theater or is gonna see it on the DVD that’s coming up… they weren’t there. So to actually watch it was a fantastic thing. Standing up on stage where I was [during the 'Big Four' jam at the Sonisphere festival in Sofia, Bulgaria on June 22], being able to look next to me, on either side being flanked by so much tremendous talent, it was great. It’s just one of those things where in the moment it doesn’t seem as enormous as it really is. After the fact, you look back and you’re like… You know like when you survive a car crash, you don’t think it’s such a big deal until you watch it in slow motion, you’re thinking, ‘Oh, my god, I can’t believe I survived.’ So going up on stage was really, really amazing. Especially when I looked back and saw how everybody was embracing everyone and how I think that… If you were there, you would have heard when, through all the goodbyes and everything at the end, when James [Hetfield, METALLICA frontman] and I embraced, the whole audience went [wild], ’cause it’s what they’ve been waiting for. It’s what I think James and I both have been waiting for, too, so it’s a good thing.”
On whether the “Big Four” tour will hit the U.S.:
Mustaine: “That’s up to METALLICA and their camp, because I think it’s fairly obvious, for myself… it doesn’t need to be the ‘Big Four’ for me to wanna play with James and Lars [Ulrich, METALLICA drummer]. I think if the ‘Big Four’ [tour in the U.S.] doesn’t happen, certainly a MEGADETH/METALLICA tour would be great — whether it’s just the two of us or if we have a support group or something like that. But yeah, I think it was really fun because of what we stand for in heavy metal. Me and James are like the ‘big daddies’ of this whole thing — we were the two guitar players that set the wheels in motion when the first tapes were made of METALLICA. I think it’s exciting now to look back and see all the millions of bands that have been created off what me and James did sitting in a room in Norwalk [California].”
According to Billboard.com, a DVD of the Sonisphere concert in Sofia, Bulgaria — which was beamed via satellite in HD to cinemas and was seen by more than 100,000 fans globally — is set to be released later this year. TV deals have also been struck for sets from Sonisphere and in Britain ITV2 will screen highlights from the U.K. festival. VH1 will show Sonisphere in the U.S.
In the U.K. it was screened in 79 cinemas. “At the Odeon in Leicester Square in London there was a mosh pit, and at the end of the show they had a stage invasion, which is just phenomenal to even think about,” says promoter Stuart Galbraith. “Not only are we hitting the territories that we’re playing with this tour, [with the cinecast] we’ve taken the ‘Big Four’ and Sonisphere into countries we haven’t been able to get to this year.”
METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX — the so-called “Big Four” of 1980s thrash metal — played together for the first time in history on June 16 in front of 81,000 fans in Warsaw, Poland.
According to Tim Cashmere from Undercover.com.au, the now-legendary Big Four show – which was held on June 22nd at Sofia, Bulgaria’s Sonisphere and featured METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX on stage for the first time – will be screened in selected cinemas across Australia from July 9. For ticketing information, head to Thebigfourlive.com and click on Australia down the bottom.
In September, a DVD/Blu-Ray package will be released showcasing the entire event including two hours of Metallica and one hour each of Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax and the ‘Am I Evil?’ jam. The two-disc set will contain backstage footage and more.
Members of the Big Four, including Dave Mustaine (MEGADETH), Lars Ulrich (METALLICA), Scott Ian (ANTHRAX) and Kerry King (SLAYER), recorded a special video tribute to the late, great heavy metal singer RONNIE JAMES DIO (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW) from the Sonisphere festival in Sofia, Bulgaria on June 22nd.
The video tribute was shown as part of the June 22nd (not so live and not complete set-lists were shows in all theaters BTW) satellite broadcast of the Big Four concert from Sofia to movie theaters around the world.
Members of Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax joined Metallica on stage last night in Sofia, Bulgaria to perform the Diamond Head classic “Am I Evil?”. James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine and Joey Belladonna all took turns singing, with various other bandmembers playing guitar, bass, pounding on snare drums and smashing cymbals. Watch it below!
The iconic “Big Four” show, as part of the Sonisphere festival was beamed via sattellite to more than 450 movie theatres in more than 140 markets in the U.S., along with cities in Europe, Canada and Latin America. Due to popular demand, the 4-hour concert will return to theaters in the US this Thursday for an encore showing. In addition, the performances of the thrash contingent have been recorded for a forthcoming “Big Four” DVD.
Megadeth bassist David Ellefson has issued the following update: “Just finished our set here in Sofia, Bulgaria. Was AWESOME!! I’ve never been to Bulgaria but the fans were thrilled and it seems everyone is having a fantastic set tonight. If you go see it in the cinema tonight I think you will enjoy. So, get a ticket, some popcorn and a soda and sit back and enjoy the rock concert…” For more on how to catch this in theaters in the US Thursday, June 24th, visit TheBigFourLive.com. For more updates from Dave Ellefson, check out his tour blogs at the MegaFanClub.
Poland’s TVN Warszawa recently aired a report on the program Stolica covering the June 16th kick-off show of the Big Four festival tour featuring METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX. Check it out below.
The Big Four – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax are bringing their historic European tour to the global stage with a concert shown via satellite in High-Definition (HD) in Cineplex Entertainment theatres across the country. These four legendary acts broke out of the underground thrash movement in the 1980′s to dominate the metal world, selling millions of records and packing arenas across the globe. Despite huge demand, these musical giants have never shared the same stage until now. The legendary concert from the tour’s stop at the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria will air on Tuesday, June 22nd at more than 65 Cineplex theatres in Canada.
In December 2009, the bands announced that they would be joining forces to take part in the traveling Sonisphere Festival for only seven shows across Europe. Now, this one-time only event from the Sofia show makes it possible for fans far and wide to participate in what otherwise is a very limited run of dates. The HD concert presentation will memorialize the event and the impact will be amplified globally with the cinema screenings, making the dreams of fans around the world over become a reality.
Lars Ulrich of Metallica says of this historic announcement, “Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal’s Big Four would not only still be around, be more popular than ever, playing shows together at stadiums all over Europe, and on top of that, coming to a movie theatre near you in High Definition (for better or worse??!!). Bring it on!”
Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian says “Damn, as if this Big Four tour wasn’t exciting enough now we get to be on the big screen worldwide! Metal at the movies, two big horns up! It is unbelievably gratifying that this means so much to the metal community around the globe. Get your tix, grab some popcorn and get ready to bang your head!”
Declares Slayer’s Kerry King: “I can’t believe someone didn’t make this happen 15 years ago! The fans finally get what they want. I think it’s awesome!”
Says Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine: “The magnitude of this event hasn’t really sunk in yet, and I am thrilled to know that people around the planet will be able to walk into a movie theatre and experience the greatest line up of heavy metal in the history of the world!”
Kerry King, Dave Mustaine, Scott Ian, and James Hetfield
The Big Four of thrash metal – METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX – played together for the first time in their history at the Sonisphere Festival last night (June 16th) at Bemowo Airport in Warsaw, Poland in front of 100,000 fans.
Gazeta.pl has posted a gallery of photos from the event. Check it out at this location.
The Big 4: METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX
METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX — the so-called “Big Four” of 1980s thrash metal — will play together for the first time in history tonight (Wednesday, June 16) at the Sonisphere festival at Bemowo Airport in Warsaw, Poland.
The first photo of all the members of the four bands (minus SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman) hanging out in a room together, apparently taken earlier today (Tuesday, June 15), can be viewed to the right.
“It’s about fucking time this happened,” says SLAYER’s Kerry King, “and about time the fans finally get what they want. This is fucking awesome.”
ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian agrees, commenting on the enormity of the announcement. “People have been talking about these four bands playing together since 1984,” he says. “That’s twenty-six years of expectation!! And the thing is, I believe not only will we live up to the expectations, we will shatter them! No other four bands as influential as the four of us have ever done this. Imagine if THE BEATLES, STONES, THE WHO and ZEPPELIN had done shows? Or SABBATH, PRIEST, MAIDEN, MOTÖRHEAD? Well, I may be getting into some rarified air here but as a fan, that’s how big I feel this is.”
These four legendary acts broke out of the underground thrash movement to dominate the metal world in the 1980s, selling millions of records and packing arenas across the globe. The metal giants have never before all shared the same stage, despite huge demand.
A second “Big Four” appearance is planned for Sonisphere Switzerland two days after the Warsaw concert, with more Sonisphere shows featuring the awesome combo to follow.
“This is a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity for heavy metal fans to see the four greatest heavy metal bands in American history back together on one stage,” concludes MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. “If there are any heads left at the end of this festival that haven’t banged, they don’t belong there.”
The “Big Four” concert on June 22 in Sofia, Bulgaria will find its way to the U.S. via a satellite broadcast. That day’s show, as part of the Sonisphere festival, will be beamed to more than 450 movie theatres in more than 140 markets in the U.S., along with cities in Europe, Canada and Latin America.
The concert will be broadcast to theatres in high definition. Delayed screenings are planned for Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.
METALLICA’s Lars Ulrich said in a statement, “Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal’s ‘Big Four’ would not only still be around, be more popular than ever, playing shows together at stadiums all over Europe, and on top of that, coming to a movie theater near you in high definition (for better or worse??!!). Bring it on!”
Metallica return to the O2 Arena in London for the third time in a matter of months, their last visit a mere three weeks ago. The DEATH MAGNETIC tour has taken them around the world, but London must be pretty special to get two dates to itself.
The O2 itself is a magnificent arena, and the concept of having the stage in the centre surrounded by the fans is brilliant, allowing the band to wander all around and for the fans to get a good look at everyone.
