Alestorm

Alestorm

The pirate crew re back on this stop of their swashbuckling journey they are in Reading’s prime venue Sub 89, famed for their wench at the ready tunes that make you want to crack out a bottle of rum in an instant, have three valiant support acts for tonight’s debauchery. Rainbowdragoneyes, Red Rum and Lagerstein and of course the evenings head line act Alestorm.

Without further ado it’s time for some merriment, first up are Rainbowdragoneyes [4/5] who on paper might sound like am audio disaster, but in reality are surprisingly infectious. Opening up with a dance-chip-core sound, the corpse painted one man band is met with a crowd who look almost anxious about the lack of fellow musicians on stage. His sound is somewhere between the soundtrack of fighting dragons with majestic 8-bit trumpets, stomping dance beats and topped off with death metal growls.

Rainbowdragoneyes

Rainbowdragoneyes

It’s not long though before the slowly trickling in crowd start to enjoy the strange sound flavour before them. There is an aura of uncertainty around the frontman until he asks the crowd an obvious ice breaker “do you like video games” before proceeding with his 3D game boy antics.

Rainbowdragoneyes

Rainbowdragoneyes

With slices such as “the rift” which sounds like Nintendo dubstep and other notable wonders such as “Primordial ooze” which is not without some killer electronically created riffs. It would be fair to say that this band have a very old school sound to them, with childhood rekindling in every chord. A thoroughly enjoyable if not unexpected set from the American gamer.

Rainbowdragoneyes

Rainbowdragoneyes

Red Rum [3.5/5] are up next with a full band on board, it’s a visual re-adjustment for the crowd (which has filled out by quite a long way). With music that sits somewhere between Neoclassical Pirate Metal and fairy-tale land infused folk. The crowd lapped up the chance to interact with the band and show them their “claw/hook” instead of the traditional metal horns.

Red Rum

Red Rum

The six piece from the Midlands step up the pace with a heavy rendition of Lord of the Rings famed “Taking the hobbits to Isengard” among other delightful offerings that are as addictively danceable as they are drinkable too. It’s not long before the crowd are thrown by command into a tundra of excitement, whirling its way into a circle pit.

Red Rum

Red Rum

The bands bring with them rhythms that are drenched in a sound that is a combination of Ensiferum, Amon Amarth, and Eluviette influence.

Red Rum

Red Rum

It’s time to say bye to the plush pirates who needless to say may have felt a bit underdressed in compare to the crowd, which had finally filled out the venue completely and just in time for the gigs second to last act.

Red Rum

Red Rum

Lagerstein [4.5/5], the troupe who hail from Australian, have travelled across the seven seas to be here tonight. The outfit who are self-described as being formed in 2010 after a 12 Kings hangover and decided that there weren’t enough drinking bands out there so formed Lagerstein and did something about it!

Lagerstein

Lagerstein

The band don’t waste too much time with formalities as they get stuck in with the first guitar chords ringing out from band members “The Majestic Beast” and ” Neil Rummy Rackers”. They work in fruitful harmony and start off the bands musical journey packed with story- telling antics, which serve as the backdrop for the beer guzzling.

Lagerstein

Lagerstein

Highlights of the bands set included a swashbuckling cover of “I’m on boat” that gets everyone familiar with the lonely island masterpiece to sing along, after downing multiple beer bongs of course. Shared with one man band Rainbowdragoneyes and the evening’s headliners Alestorm it’s needless to say that the stage is pretty packed.

Lagerstein

Lagerstein

The excitement for Alestorm [4/5] has begun to boil as the band are about to kick off with an instrumental sea shanty followed by new found classic: “Walk the plank”. Which kicks off the “First annual Anglo-Irish pie rating festival 2014” according to the set list.

Alestorm

Alestorm

The ‘True Scottish Pirate Metal’ band were welcomed onstage by the packed out crowd. The band who are nearing the end of their nineteen day tour of the British Isles, most bands at this point would be faltering but the crew are roaring to go helped by a power punch of excitement in their bellies to add fire to the hearth.

Alestorm

Alestorm

Working their magic all over the intimate stage, Alestorm show their ability to play to a large and relatively small crowds. Displaying their calibre as musical geniuses and as theatrical master minds. With no stopping except for topping up the dosage of alcohol as the band continue onward on their high energy rampage.

Alestorm

Alestorm

The twenty strong set list has been one killer track after another, with the likes of “drink”, “Nancy the tavern wench”, “wooden leg” and of course the awesome “Wenches and Mead” .It’s fair to say that when final fun filled tracks “Captain Morgan’s revenge” and simply named “Rum” rung out the crowd wouldn’t have asked them to walk the plank in punishment.

Alestorm

Alestorm

The concert tonight has been a fine display of how an intimate stage can really bring out the most excitement in a crowd and the best in a band. Helped, naturally by lashings of beer, plenty of whirlpool worthy circle pits and more antics than a circus. It’s fair to say that Pirate fest 2014 in Reading has been a success.

Bloodstock has become something of a staple holiday for many metal heads, with its fine selection of musical delights, the drinking until dawn, great company, dressing up and of course the bin jousting! What more could you want besides all of this?

Signus Regis – the Slovakian heavy metal band unleashed their third album EXODUS last year. The album is a theme album with guests vocalists like Göran Edman, Daisa Munhoz, Michael Vescera and Lance King. Since I thought the album was great I thought I should hook up with bandleader/bass player Ronnie König in order to get to know a little bite more about the band and their history. We handled issues like EXODUS, the matter of guest vocalists, the line-up and labels. Another topic that was handled was also the status of heavy metal/hardrock in Slovakia. Enjoy.

 Conan Interview

with Jon Davis at Sanctuary, Basingstoke

22nd March 2014

Interview by Ashlinn Nash

Conan; a three piece from the North West of England, they are a pioneering member of the growing in popularity doom scene of the UK. With their infectious dark tones, blistering beats, harsh vocals and thundering bass lines; that are rich in reverb heavy feedback that could melt iron from a statue.

The band have been consistently touring, writing and recording albums, with hard work and determination, it’s no wonder they are sought after. As part of their UK tour with Bast, we caught up front man for a chat Jon Davis in the bands van, parked outside for tonight’s gig in Basingstoke’s intimate venue; Sanctuary.

The Brazilian heavy metal act Pastore, led by singer Mario Pastore (Soulspell), released their second album last year called THE END OF OUR FLAMES. The music ought to appeal to fans of Judas Priest, Iced Earth and Iron Maiden and since I’m a fan of those acts I decided to hook up with Pastore in order to talk about the new album (which is brilliant) the bands past present and future. Since this interview was made, Pastore has changed the line-up totally!  Read about what Mario Pastore had to say below. Read the rest of this entry »

ARTHEMIS Interview – Guitarist Andrea Martongelli

November 20th, 2012

Arthemis Interview

 with Andrea Martongelli (Guitars/Backing Vocals)

Interview by Kirsty Birkett-Stubbs

www.arthemismusic.com

Metal is an art form – fair enough one that is responsible for more sore necks than anything by Van Gogh or Picasso (well maybe not Picasso – funny angles and what not) but art none the less. And like art there’s a lot of different schools of thought. One set of artists wielding their brushes in the power-thrash scene is Italy’s Arthemis. Guitarist and backing vocalist Andrea Martongelli takes a break from the canvas and talks about the band’s latest body of works We Fight, and recent live antics. Oh and we discover pigs can’t sweat…

KATATONIA Interview with Drummer Daniel Liljekvist

October 27th, 2012

Katatonia Interview

with Drummer Daniel Liljekvist

www.katatonia.com

Interview by Kirsty Birkett-Stubbs

As masters of melancholy, Katatonia have been a little bit like a perpetual raincloud on the musical weather map, since they appeared on the scene in 1991. Within these darker thunderclouds though, is a fascinating portrayal of humanity and the sadness that touches us all at times. With each album Katatonia develop and deepen their sound, and latest offering Dead End Kings is no different. Stilling the rain for a moment, drummer Daniel Liljekvist gives us a fleeting insight into Katatonia’s world…

Process Interview

with Guitarist Anders Møller Pedersen

https://www.facebook.com/processdenmark

Interview by Kirsty Birkett-Stubbs

Any artist worth their salt, pepper, and other condiments knows you can’t rush the creative process. So the fact that Danish metallers Process took some time over the recording of their debut album Through Acknowledgment Only isn’t going to get tongues wagging. What might is the musical cacophony contained within. Laying the groundwork, guitarist Anders Møller Pedersen gives us an insight into this particular Process…

Mats Kurth drummer of Coronatus

 Interviewed by: Anders Sandvall

Thanks to Tom Hack for setting up the interview.

Thanks to Massacre Records for providing me with promo pics.

Mats Kurth, the drummer of the German goth act Coronatus and I hooked up a while ago after I heard their new album TERRA INCOGNITA and became curious about the guys. The band has two female vocalists who sings in English and German which must be considered as a bit unusual so our conversation evolved of course a lot about the new album and the atmospheric music. We also talked about the bands past present and future and scroll down to see how the interview turned out.
