Danish festival Day of Decay announces date and first headlining band

February 13th, 2012

The Danish metal festival Day of Decay returns with a new venue and an international top act to headline the bill.

For the third consecutive year, the annual one-day festival will annihilate the city of Aalborg in Northern Denmark and the gory devastation is set to take place on May 18th at Studenterhuset (students’ house).

The first confirmed bands are a true triple-headed metal monster consisting of the Brazilian deathmetal veterans of Krisiun, the melodic metal masters of Mercenary, and the upcoming local thrash heroes of Caro (formerly Omen).

“We are very proud to announce Krisiun – one of the greatest deathmetal bands around today. Having them play in Aalborg certainly is a big thing,” says Carsten Brogaard Pedersen, chairman of the Music Association Day of Decay, the organization behind the festival.

Since their conception in 1990, Krisiun has released eight albums and performed on stages worldwide. The latest album is the critically acclaimed “The Great Execution” which was released on Century Media in October 2011.

Second band on the bill – the merciless Mercenary – was formed in 1991 and has toured all over Europe and the US. For the past decade, Mercenary has been a pioneer for Danish metal on the international stage, verified by the release of six succesful albums. After several line-up changes, the band is back with a strong album and the four-piece is all set to destroy their hometown with their show at Day of Decay.

With a freshly signed contract with the US label Rogue Records America and a debut album coming out later this year, the thrash metal upstarts in Caro are determined to turn some heads. “They are a very skillful band so we think they are a perfect match for Day of Decay. One of the points of the festival is to support the metal scene in Northern Denmark, and we want to help these upcoming bands on their way by creating some good connections and expanding their network,” says Carsten Brogaard Pedersen.

In the past two years, the festival took place at two different outdoor venues, but this year Day of Decay is going down at an indoor location. “To us, as festival organizers, the collaboration with Studenterhuset entails a lot of advantages; and it is cool having a professional and experienced music venue to back us up – this is going to be the best Day of Decay so far!” says Carsten.

Day of Decay 2012 will feature around 10 bands comprised of international and Danish top acts as well as local bands. The organizers have formed a partnership with W:O:A Metal Battle which means that the Danish winners will perform at Day of Decay.

Tickets are DKK 250 (34 Euro for all you non-Danish readers) plus a fee, and they can be purchased online at www.billetlugen.dk as well as all other outlets of Billetlugen.

MERCENARY’s “Metamorphosis” Out Today, Exclusive Digital Bonus Track Now Available

April 6th, 2011

It is available now, digitally with a second exclusive bonus track entitled, “The Devil’s Own.” As previously announced, both digital and physical formats in North America contain the bonus track, “Incorporate Your Demons.” The band, who just completed an extensive European tour alongside Symphony X and Nevermore, have posted a short video about “The Devil’s Own.” Check it out here. Order your copy of “Metamorphosis” now at Prosthetic’s online store: http://store.prostheticrecords.com/index.php/bands/mercenary

“Metamorphosis” track listing:

1. Through The Eyes Of The Devil

2. The Follower

3. In A River Of Madness

4. Memoria

5. Velvet Lies

6. In Bloodred Shades

7. Shades Of Grey

8. On The Edge Of Sanity

9. Black Brigade

10. Incorporate Your Demons (North American bonus track)

11. The Devil’s Own (North American digital exclusive bonus track)

Through the last decade, MERCENARY have been one of the most active and successful proponents of Denmark’s rising metal scene. Over the course of their previous five studio albums, which earned the band increasing critical acclaim for their distinctive blend of aggression and huge soaring melodies, the band earned a wide international audience and dedicated fan base. MERCENARY have toured actively as support for top acts such as Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Nevermore, King Diamond, Death Angel and many more. They have also appeared on most major metal festivals, such as Wacken (twice), Tuska, Metal Camp, Earthshaker, Inferno, Graspop, Dynamo, Summer Nights, ProgPower Europe, and ProgPower USA (twice) and many more.

Behind the scenes, however, deep creative and personal differences increased through the years, and they culminated when their drummer, keyboard player and one of their two singers left the band in late 2009. Joined by master drummer Morten Løwe, the band now counts the song writing team of original member Jakob Mølbjerg (guitar) and master shredder Martin Buus (lead guitar), as well as the versatile singer/bassist René Pedersen.

Rising from the ashes of the old lineup, the Mercenary of 2011 evolves and reshapes the band’s trademark sound of combined clean and aggressive vocals with a new edge, displaying a catchy and fresh sound, as well as an newfound unity, ambition and musical focus within their ranks. This is reflected in the “Metamorphosis” cover imagery.

“There’s of course a lot of obvious (and indeed slightly cheesy) self-referential symbolism regarding the rebirth of the band in the cover artwork,” the band said in a statement released last week. “But apart from that, we felt that the motive of a phoenix was a fitting expression of many of René’s lyrical themes on the album, as they deal with personal and existential crisis, overcoming personal obstacles and how we can sometimes redefine ourselves in the process of taking responsibility for altering the conditions of our very lives. This idea of personal freedom can be a very frightening thought for some, but it’s actually a message of hope and optimism – we can always take control of our lives and free ourselves of inner or outer constraints, or at least take pride in the struggle to do so.

“(Okay, dropping all the intellectual pretense, we just liked the artwork because it was freaking bird on fire – how cool is that!?)

“On a serious note, though, we also felt that a simple, raw and iconic visual theme would support the musical direction of the new album. We feel that the songs are our strongest ever – they’re no-bullshit, focused and straight to the point, and our good friend Don G really nailed these concepts with his artwork.”

The Internet and print magazines have been abuzz over one album recently?Mercenary?s 11 DREAMS.  The Danish band unleashed this sonic behemoth in Europe last summer but February 8th sees the release of 11 DREAMS in North America.  Following the lead of almost universal critical approval from the Europeans, 11 DREAMS appears to be headed down the same path as the rave reviews and accolades continue to pour in (don?t miss the reviews of 11 DREAMS here at Metal Rules) setting the album up with a surefire place among writers? year-end lists.

On the morning of 11 DREAMS North American release date (Febraury 8th), I chatted with vocalist/bassist Henrik ?Kral? Andersen about the new album, how the band is handling all the critical praise, the new lineup, the ready-to-explode Danish metal scene and just where exactly he got the nickname ?Kral??
