ORIGINAL “CLASH OF THE TITANS” LINEUP OF SLAYER, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX, TO TOUR AGAIN

July 12th, 2010

Leg Two of “American Carnage Tour” Announced

LOS ANGELES, CA – MONDAY, July 12, 2010 — Metalheads, rejoice:  North America’s biggest thrash tour in 20 years is announced, as 1991’s original American “Clash of the Titans” lineup – Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax – will tour together once again on Leg Two of the “American Carnage Tour.”  This trek kicks off September 24 at Verizon Wireless Theatre in Dallas, TX and will play 20 dates, including New York’s Nassau Coliseum, concluding at Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on October 21.

On Leg Two of American Carnage, Megadeth will continue to roar through its landmark 1990 album Rust in Peace from front to back, while Slayer will rip the roof off by performing its much-lauded Seasons in the Abyss album, which was also released in 1990.  Anthrax recently welcomed back singer Joey Belladonna, who defined the band during its heyday, and now permanently back in the band, will be front-and-center.

A special pre-sale will launch this Wednesday, July 14, and fans should log onto www.slayer.netwww.megadeth.com – or www.anthrax.com – to obtain the special code needed for the pre-sale, and then go to www.ticketmaster.com (http://knoxvilletickets.com/ for the Knoxville date) to purchase tickets.  The public on-sale will begin July 23 in most markets.

In the spirit of beating the recession, there will be pre-sale discounts on all tickets in most markets (see below for more details), and if that’s not enough, a limited amount of $10 tickets will be available in many cities – log onto any of the bands’ websites or onto Ticketmaster’s site for those details.

But wait, there’s even more.  For Leg Two of the “American Carnage Tour,” Megadeth has teamed up with iloveallaccess.com to provide fans with VIP experiences including priority venue access, meet and greets, parties, exclusive gifts and more.  Logging onto www.megadeth.com will provide those details.  Plus, fans who purchase their tickets online at either www.slayer.net or www.ticketmaster.com will receive a free download of the live audio track “War Ensemble,” set to be included on Slayer’s forthcoming, as yet unannounced, “Live Intrusion” DVD release.

Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax will kick off the second leg of the “American Carnage Tour” on the heels of the historic “Big Four” Sonisphere Festival concerts they played with Metallica in seven European cities this summer.  The dates marked the first time that these four bands – acknowledged as the most influential bands of the thrash genre – had shared a concert bill.

The original “Clash of the Titans” tour united the three forces of thrash metal for the entire summer of 1991, with then-little known Alice in Chains serving as the opener.  This tour, which falls under the “American Carnage” banner, isn’t rewriting history, it’s writing a whole new chapter of head-banging history that is sure to delight fans new and old.

Megadeth and Slayer return to North America late this month to co-headline the east coast “Canadian Carnage Tour,” and then starting August 11, the first leg of the “American Carnage Tour” (dates below) with Testament as Special Guest.  The tour was originally scheduled for a winter 2010 run, but was postponed when Slayer bassist/vocalist Tom Araya was forced to undergo neck surgery.  But as is the case for anything good in life, this tour will be well worth the wait.

Dave Mustaine’s long-awaited autobiography, “Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir” will be released in the U.S. on August 3 via HarperCollins

July 9th, 2010

"Hello Me... Meet The Real Me", will be released in the U.S. on August 3 via HarperCollins

"Hello Me... Meet The Real Me", will be released in the U.S. on August 3 via HarperCollins

MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine‘s long-awaited autobiography, “Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir” (formerly “Hello Me… Meet The Real Me”), will be released in the U.S. on August 3 via HarperCollins‘s It Books imprint (focusing on pop culture, sports, style and content derived from the Internet). The U.K. edition, “Mustaine: A Life In Metal”, will hit bookstores in the U.K. on September 30.

Mustaine is the first to admit that he has bottomed out a few times in his dark and twisted speed-metal version of a Dickensonian life. In “Mustaine”, he reveals the many highs and lows of this life, including:

* The formation of METALLICA and the key contributions he made for which he was never given full credit.

* The formation and rise of MEGADETH, and his history with David Ellefson, Marty Friedman and Nick Menza.

* The story of his departure from MEGADETH in 2002 and his eventual return.

* His multiple battles with alcohol and drugs, and how Alice Cooper played a role in one of his recoveries.

* The injury that nearly ended his career.

* After years of rejecting religion, how embracing Christianity helped repair his relationship with his family and maintain his sobriety.

* His tumultuous childhood which included several moves from city to city, all in an attempt to avoid his alcoholic father.

METALLICA frontman James Hetfield once observed that Mustaine must have been born with a horseshoe up his ass. That’s how lucky he has been and how fortunate he is to be pulling breath after so many close calls. In “Mustaine”, he tells a story that will inspire, stun and terrify.

“Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir” was co-written by New York Times journalist Joe Layden who also authored “The Last Great Fight” about what is considered by many to be the biggest upset in the history of boxing: James “Buster” Douglas‘ tenth-round knockout win over Mike Tyson in 1990.

Mustaine was recently asked by Metal Hammer magazine whether his conversion to Christianity has turned his autobiography into a somewhat tame account of his life, with the scowling, venomous rage of the past replaced with placatory serenity and good will to all men. “It’s still a little bit edgy,” he replied. “You’ve got to take into consideration that we live in a very litigious time now and people will try you and they sue because they spill coffee on their crotch, you know? So the publisher took a look at the book and took out everything they thought would be controversial to the point where I’d get sued over it, but it still definitely has teeth. It’s a funny book. It’s got great moments and there’s still a lot of sadness in it, too. It’s all factual. It’s a story of my life and my life isn’t about name-calling and mud-slinging.”

Mustaine told AOL‘s Noisecreep about his upcoming autobiography, “It’s easy to hate somebody that you don’t like. But you know what? People don’t know who I am. Who they think I am is not really who I am, because they guy that they’ve continued to vilify in the press, that guy’s been gone a long time. And I think anyone who reads this book will see that.”

“Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir” is not simply a tell-all story of decadence and debauchery.

“That stuff is mundane,” Mustaine told Noisecreep. “We come to expect that from rock stars, so why would I talk about it? Everybody knows it happened. I want to talk about things that are way more important. There’s stuff in there about how the band was formed, why I chose to sing, how the different band members came and went, how different songs were written, stuff that happened through the addictions and rehabs. And when I got done reading it for the first time, when I closed the last page I actually had tears in my eyes because somebody had finally gotten who I am as a person in print.”

According to Mustaine, part of the book reveals how he practiced black magic as a teenager, and how the experience — which inspired the 1986 song “The Conjuring” — affected his life for years after.

“I put two hexes on people, and they both worked and the result was just what I was asking for,” he explained. “Now, it took forever to get that Satanic depression off of me because it’s just like playing with a Ouija board. You open the doorway to the dark side, and spirits come through. It took almost 20 years to get rid of that Satanic depression. I did it when I was 15, and I don’t think I got free of it until I was in my mid-30s.You ask yourself, ‘How is it possible that this is happening to me?’ Well, because you flirted with the devil and you put a hex on somebody and you put another hex on somebody, and, well, you owe him. And that’s why I have a problem playing ‘The Conjuring’ today.”

Dave Mustaine will sign copies of “Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir” on Monday, August 23 between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. at Unity Temple on The Plaza, Sanctuary, 707 W 47th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64112. Mustaine will meet fans and he will autograph copies of his books purchased from Rainy Day Books on the Rainy Day web site and/or at the event that are accompanied by a stamped ticket.

Each person must have a Rainy Day Books ticket to be admitted to this book-signing event.

Mustaine will only sign copies of his books purchased from Rainy Day Books for this event. Photos, memorabilia and other items are prohibited in the book-signing line.

Norway’s Lydverket blog conducted an interview with Mustaine on August 7, 2009 at the Langham Hotel in London, England. The first clip from the chat, in which he discusses his upcoming autobiography, can be viewed below.

MEGADETH: DAVE MUSTAINE ‘ME AND JAMES HETFIELD ARE LIKE THE ‘BIG DADDIES’ OF THIS WHOLE THING”

July 5th, 2010
The Big 4: METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX

The Big 4: METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX

Austria’s Stormbringer.at webzine conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine when the band played in Vienna on July 1, 2010. Watch the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On whether “Big Four” tour [featuring METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX] is something special for him or if it’s just “another MEGADETH tour”:

Mustaine: “Of course it’s special. It’s historical. It’s life-changing for a lot of people that were there. And I think the bragging rights for people who actually witnessed it versus somebody who saw it on YouTube or saw it in a movie theater or is gonna see it on the DVD that’s coming up… they weren’t there. So to actually watch it was a fantastic thing. Standing up on stage where I was [during the ‘Big Four’ jam at the Sonisphere festival in Sofia, Bulgaria on June 22], being able to look next to me, on either side being flanked by so much tremendous talent, it was great. It’s just one of those things where in the moment it doesn’t seem as enormous as it really is. After the fact, you look back and you’re like… You know like when you survive a car crash, you don’t think it’s such a big deal until you watch it in slow motion, you’re thinking, ‘Oh, my god, I can’t believe I survived.’ So going up on stage was really, really amazing. Especially when I looked back and saw how everybody was embracing everyone and how I think that… If you were there, you would have heard when, through all the goodbyes and everything at the end, when James [Hetfield, METALLICA frontman] and I embraced, the whole audience went [wild], ’cause it’s what they’ve been waiting for. It’s what I think James and I both have been waiting for, too, so it’s a good thing.”

On whether the “Big Four” tour will hit the U.S.:

Mustaine: “That’s up to METALLICA and their camp, because I think it’s fairly obvious, for myself… it doesn’t need to be the ‘Big Four’ for me to wanna play with James and Lars [Ulrich, METALLICA drummer]. I think if the ‘Big Four’ [tour in the U.S.] doesn’t happen, certainly a MEGADETH/METALLICA tour would be great — whether it’s just the two of us or if we have a support group or something like that. But yeah, I think it was really fun because of what we stand for in heavy metal. Me and James are like the ‘big daddies’ of this whole thing — we were the two guitar players that set the wheels in motion when the first tapes were made of METALLICA. I think it’s exciting now to look back and see all the millions of bands that have been created off what me and James did sitting in a room in Norwalk [California].”

According to Billboard.com, a DVD of the Sonisphere concert in Sofia, Bulgaria — which was beamed via satellite in HD to cinemas and was seen by more than 100,000 fans globally — is set to be released later this year. TV deals have also been struck for sets from Sonisphere and in Britain ITV2 will screen highlights from the U.K. festival. VH1 will show Sonisphere in the U.S.

In the U.K. it was screened in 79 cinemas. “At the Odeon in Leicester Square in London there was a mosh pit, and at the end of the show they had a stage invasion, which is just phenomenal to even think about,” says promoter Stuart Galbraith. “Not only are we hitting the territories that we’re playing with this tour, [with the cinecast] we’ve taken the ‘Big Four’ and Sonisphere into countries we haven’t been able to get to this year.”

METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX — the so-called “Big Four” of 1980s thrash metal — played together for the first time in history on June 16 in front of 81,000 fans in Warsaw, Poland.

MEGADETH ‘Rust In Peace Live’ DVD Out This September!

June 23rd, 2010
MEGADETH 'Rust In Peace Live' DVD

MEGADETH 'Rust In Peace Live' DVD

The final night of MEGADETH‘s historic month-long “Rust In Peace” 20th anniversary tour has been captured for the upcoming “Rust In Peace Live” Blu-ray, DVD and CD, due out September 7 on Shout! Factory.

On March 31, 2010, at this incredibly special show at the legendary Hollywood Palladium, not far from where Dave Mustaine formed the band in 1983, MEGADETH played their landmark, genre-defining 1990 “Rust In Peace” album in its entirety, in addition to other MEGADETH favorites. “Rust In Peace Live” also marks the return of original bassist David Ellefson (MEGADETH 1983-2002) to the iconic multi-platinum group after eight years. Ellefson (bass), joins Mustaine (lead vocals, guitar), Shawn Drover (drums) and Chris Broderick (guitar).

“Rust In Peace Live” features the entire “Rust In Peace” track listing, including all-time classics “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due” and “Hangar 18″ along with bonus fan favorites from various other MEGADETH releases such as “Symphony For Destruction”, “Peace Sells” and “Skin O’ My Teeth”.

MEGADETH founder/frontman/guitarist Dave Mustaine explains, “We are pumped to be able to share the ‘RIP Live’ concert with you all around the world. The anniversary and David Ellefson coming back was better than a facelift and a bottle of Viagra for old [MEGADETH mascot] Vic.”

The 80-minute “Rust In Peace Live” DVD (5.1 Dolby Surround 16:9 Widescreen) and Blu-ray (5.1 DTS Master Audio 1080p High Definition) were directed by Kerry Asmussen (GREEN DAY, JAY-Z, Coachella). The DVD and Blu-ray will also include behind-the-scenes footage, including a rare glimpse of the band rehearsing in their dressing room as they prepare to take the stage.

“Rust In Peace” is considered one of the best metal albums of all time by fans and critics and debuted at #23 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart in the U.S. and #8 in the U.K. The album showcased a much tighter sound, with Mustaine‘s writing style adopting a rhythmically complex progressive edge, prompting All Music Guide to cite “Rust In Peace” as “MEGADETH‘s strongest musical effort.” The album received Grammy nominations in 1990 and 1991 for “Best Metal Performance.” Emphasizing the massive impact of “Rust In Peace” in the July 2010 issue of Guitar World, writer Richard Bienstock calls it “one of the pinnacles of the first wave of thrash metal.” He continues, “A defining quality of MEGADETH‘s sound — and the one that perhaps most sets them apart from their ‘Big Four’ thrash brethren, METALLICA, SLAYER and ANTHRAX — has always been the band’s fiery mix of speed-metal ferocity and progressive instrumental virtuosity… nowhere has this combination been displayed better than on ‘Rust In Peace’.”

The full track listing for the “Rust In Peace Live” CD, DVD and Blu-ray is as follows:

“Rust In Peace” Live:

01. Holy Wars…The Punishment Due
02. Hangar 18

METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX – Poland’s TVN Warszawa Issues Report On First Ever Big Four Show

June 21st, 2010
The Big Four...LIVE!

The Big Four...LIVE!

Poland’s TVN Warszawa recently aired a report on the program Stolica covering the June 16th kick-off show of the Big Four festival tour featuring METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX. Check it out below.

The Big Four – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax are bringing their historic European tour to the global stage with a concert shown via satellite in High-Definition (HD) in Cineplex Entertainment theatres across the country. These four legendary acts broke out of the underground thrash movement in the 1980’s to dominate the metal world, selling millions of records and packing arenas across the globe. Despite huge demand, these musical giants have never shared the same stage until now. The legendary concert from the tour’s stop at the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria will air on Tuesday, June 22nd at more than 65 Cineplex theatres in Canada.

In December 2009, the bands announced that they would be joining forces to take part in the traveling Sonisphere Festival for only seven shows across Europe. Now, this one-time only event from the Sofia show makes it possible for fans far and wide to participate in what otherwise is a very limited run of dates. The HD concert presentation will memorialize the event and the impact will be amplified globally with the cinema screenings, making the dreams of fans around the world over become a reality.

Lars Ulrich of Metallica says of this historic announcement, “Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal’s Big Four would not only still be around, be more popular than ever, playing shows together at stadiums all over Europe, and on top of that, coming to a movie theatre near you in High Definition (for better or worse??!!). Bring it on!”

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian says “Damn, as if this Big Four tour wasn’t exciting enough now we get to be on the big screen worldwide! Metal at the movies, two big horns up! It is unbelievably gratifying that this means so much to the metal community around the globe. Get your tix, grab some popcorn and get ready to bang your head!”

Declares Slayer’s Kerry King: “I can’t believe someone didn’t make this happen 15 years ago! The fans finally get what they want. I think it’s awesome!”

Says Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine: “The magnitude of this event hasn’t really sunk in yet, and I am thrilled to know that people around the planet will be able to walk into a movie theatre and experience the greatest line up of heavy metal in the history of the world!”

METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX: The First ‘Big Four’ Photo

June 16th, 2010
The Big 4: METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX

The Big 4: METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX

METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX — the so-called “Big Four” of 1980s thrash metal — will play together for the first time in history tonight (Wednesday, June 16) at the Sonisphere festival at Bemowo Airport in Warsaw, Poland.

The first photo of all the members of the four bands (minus SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman) hanging out in a room together, apparently taken earlier today (Tuesday, June 15), can be viewed to the right.

“It’s about fucking time this happened,” says SLAYER’s Kerry King, “and about time the fans finally get what they want. This is fucking awesome.”

ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian agrees, commenting on the enormity of the announcement. “People have been talking about these four bands playing together since 1984,” he says. “That’s twenty-six years of expectation!! And the thing is, I believe not only will we live up to the expectations, we will shatter them! No other four bands as influential as the four of us have ever done this. Imagine if THE BEATLES, STONES, THE WHO and ZEPPELIN had done shows? Or SABBATH, PRIEST, MAIDEN, MOTÖRHEAD? Well, I may be getting into some rarified air here but as a fan, that’s how big I feel this is.”

These four legendary acts broke out of the underground thrash movement to dominate the metal world in the 1980s, selling millions of records and packing arenas across the globe. The metal giants have never before all shared the same stage, despite huge demand.

A second “Big Four” appearance is planned for Sonisphere Switzerland two days after the Warsaw concert, with more Sonisphere shows featuring the awesome combo to follow.

“This is a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity for heavy metal fans to see the four greatest heavy metal bands in American history back together on one stage,” concludes MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. “If there are any heads left at the end of this festival that haven’t banged, they don’t belong there.”

The “Big Four” concert on June 22 in Sofia, Bulgaria will find its way to the U.S. via a satellite broadcast. That day’s show, as part of the Sonisphere festival, will be beamed to more than 450 movie theatres in more than 140 markets in the U.S., along with cities in Europe, Canada and Latin America.

The concert will be broadcast to theatres in high definition. Delayed screenings are planned for Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

METALLICA’s Lars Ulrich said in a statement, “Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal’s ‘Big Four’ would not only still be around, be more popular than ever, playing shows together at stadiums all over Europe, and on top of that, coming to a movie theater near you in high definition (for better or worse??!!). Bring it on!”

Conducted by Robert Williams

Videography courtesy of Sandra Torres

For the first time ever, North American thrash metal fans are witnessing Megadeth’s monumental "Rust In Peace" album performed live in it’s entirety as part of "The Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour". A live in-concert DVD has been filmed already as part of the North American leg of the tour and plans are underway to take "The Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour" to Mexico and South America. With the return of bassist Dave Ellefson rounding out perhaps Megadeth’s strongest lineup to date, this current tour absolutely scorches everything in it’s path and is not to be missed. Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine recently took the time to talk metal with Metal-Rules.com and filled us in on the return of Dave Ellefson, "The Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour", the launch of Megadeth radio as well as his upcoming autobiography.

Jimmy DeGrasso – Alice Cooper, Hail!, F5, ex- Megadeth, Y&T, Suicidal Tendencies

January 20th, 2010
Jimmy DeGrasso

JIMMY DeGRASSO

INTERVIEW AND LIVE PICTURES  BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

American born drummer Jimmy DeGrasso is probably best known for his work with Megadeth, but he’s also been involved with many other interesting bands and projects during his long career.  In mid 80’s, after moving from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles, Jimmy first did studio sessions with the “Prince of Darkness” himself, Ozzy Osbourne, before getting his first permanent job from Californian rockers Y & T in 1986. After many successful years with them, Jimmy decided to leave Y & T in 1990 and in the subsequent years he toured with such names as Lita Ford and Alice in Chains before joining the thrash/punk/hardcore crossover  group Suicidal Tendencies in 2004. Unfortunately, the band broke up soon later and next Jimmy joined Alice Cooper’s touring band. He’s been working with Alice on and off since then. In 1998 he joined Megadeth and stayed with them until the band (temporarily) disbanded in 2002. Today Jimmy is a highly sought after session and touring drummer.  He’s also a full time member of all-star band “HAIL!” along with his former Megadeth bandmate David Ellefsson, Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser, and vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens. Jimmy has also another band with Ellefsson called F5 and they released the album THE RECKONING in 2008.  In  December (2009) Jimmy came to Finland with Alice Cooper and then I had a chance to sit down with him and discuss his past, present and near future plans. Shawn Drover isn’t the usual mouthpiece for Megadeth as we’ve all read/see countless interviews with the legend himself, Dave Mustaine. So when given the opportunity to speak with Shawn, I was interested to hear his story on Megadeth, the line-up changes (especially surrounding the departure of his brother Glen from Megadeth), and the status of his previous band Eidolon which is currently on hiatus…read on!
