Sadly, we’ve lost yet another metal legend. Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza was performing last night at the nightclub called “The Baked Potato” with his band called OHM. Reports are that he collapsed on stage, possibly due to a heart attack.
An official announcement, available below, in part reads:
“I have been asked by his family to be their public representative though this tragic and difficult time, so will be fielding all press inquiries. His mother Rose and father Don ask for privacy and prayers for them, and Nick’s two young boys. News of a service, remembrance and celebration of Nick’s life and music will be announced in the days to come.”

Few bands have had a rougher go of it than Megadeth the last few years. In 2014, band leader Dave Mustaine had to undergo neck surgery a second time, cancelling their participation in the inaugural Motorboat cruise. Then longtime band members Chris Broderick (guitars) and Shawn Drover (drums) left Megadeth, citing creative differences. The band didn’t tour for a long time, but I just knew wily ol’ Dave had something good up his sleeve. Never, ever, count Megadeth out! Dave’s response to these challenges was to recruit Lamb of God’s drumming powerhouse Chris Adler and Brazilian shredder Kiko Loureiro from Angra and then record the band’s best album in years, DYSTOPIA! Only a killer bill would be fitting for the tour, so we get crossover thrash legends Suicidal Tendencies (with fucking Dave Lombardo on drums!), melodic death metallers Children of Bodom, and young in age but old in style thrashers Havok! Are you metalheads salivating yet or what? Tonight we are in Bethlehem PA, a former steel town that generated most of the steel used for the US ships during WWII. Let’s get Bethlehem cranking out some metal again! SET THE WORLD AFIRE! BRING IT!

Sunday, March 6th was a semi-historical occasion in the Calgary Metal scene. It was the first time that a Metal concert was hosted in the Grey Eagle Casino, a beautiful new venue in Calgary. Sure Queensrcyhe had played the GEC a couple months before but the small seated crowd of 500 older fans but that gig was almost a warm-up for the crowd and style of show as the sold out Megadeth tour. There were so many unanswered questions…would the layout be seats or standing area? Would it be loud enough? How would the line-up’s be? Could security handle the crowd? And most importantly…would there be enough beer?! I’m pleased to say the GEC met all expectations as it was a great, safe show and it seemed that all the 2700 or so people had a great time.

Former Megadeth drummer, Nick Menza, has posted the following message via social media, pointed at Megadeth leader, Dave Mustaine:
“To: Dave Mustaine in regards to my publishing royalties. I find it very unprofessional that you conduct business like a child, quit playing games! Be a man and stop taking food from my kids mouths. It’s my earned money, not yours. Quit ripping me off. WTF?”
Caleb Smith of the Heavy Metal Thrash, The Sick Room podcast in New Zealand recently conducted an interview with former Megadeth members Nick Menza and Chris Poland, you can you now listen to the two part interview below.
Menza was recently offered a “very unfair deal to rejoin Megadeth”. In this new exclusive interview he explains in depth the logistics of what went on in Dave Mustaine’s San Diego based studio.
Some album intros are totally annoying and you always skip them when you put on the album. However, some are excellent, set the mood for the listening experience, and are totally memorable. Those are the ones we focus on for this week.
For our selections, we limit the choices to ALBUM intros, not just any ole song intro. It can be a spoken intro, sound effects, or a shorter musical piece…but is not a “song” or a part of a song, it is a stand alone track on the album. We asked our staff to give us their top 5 selections and some thoughts on them. Check out the results below….
Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza was recently offered a ‘very unfair deal to rejoin Megadeth’ In a brand new exclusive interview with Caleb Smith of the Heavy Metal Thrash, “The Sick Room” podcast in New Zealand, Nick Menza explains in depth the logistics of what went on in Dave Mustaine’s San Diego based Studio, you can you now listen to the two part interview below.
Menza: “I went and jammed with them for a 3 day weekend and then on the 3rd day we started to write new songs, and it was cool, they even told me that I was back in the band and to send a press release about it. I didn’t want to say anything until I had an agreement, a contract in writing on what is going to happen and they send this ridiculous proposal which pretty much said ‘You’re not going to get paid until the touring’, so basically I was going to be working on the new record for free, but then I had intended on leaning towards that anyway and then I thought to myself I’m not going to break, I’m not going to sell myself short for something that is going to be huge you know. They gotta realize the longevity it, and then the whole thing just became silly, I didn’t even get a chance to negotiate about anything, they just cut it off and said ‘that’s it’ and afterwards I couldn’t get hold of Dave or anybody, he blocked my emails”

Says ANGRA guitarist Rafael Bittencourt: “Oh boy! My spine is still giving me goosebumps!
“Kiko is in MEGADETH! Wow! What a feeling of pride!
“I have known Kiko for many years and he deserves this great opportunity more than anyone else.
“I usually say that we have a brotherhood’s relationship, so we always wish the best for each other.
“Kiko has been tracking a very serious and talented career.
“I take to say this is also an amazing achievement for Brazilian metal.
“The beginning of this new epic stage is something we all should celebrate. It will be great for ANGRA and for all Brazilian bands, since it draws attention and highlights the talent of Brazilian musicians in general.
“Regarding the works with ANGRA, I believe he will comply with all activities that he has already committed to and he will always be part of our family. He will definitively not be able to turn his back for something he helped build with so much effort. I’m sure we will still make a lot together, either in or out of ANGRA.

Dave Mustaine announced the new guitarist for Megadeth today and as suspected, it’s Kiko!!
“I first met Kiko around 8 years ago for a cover shoot for Burrn! magazine. I had no idea who he was, other than the fact he was tremendously talented and that the staff from Burrn! held him in high regard. Since then I’ve come to see what a guitar virtuoso he is, and I’m deeply encouraged by his depth and talent. Very few Megadeth alumni have had the same feel and ability as Kiko. As Frank Sinatra says, “the best is yet to come!” -Dave Mustaine”
Dave Mustaine, of MEGADETH, and Chris Adler, drummer for LAMB OF GOD, will join original bassist David Ellefson in the creation of MEGADETH’s anticipated forthcoming album. Adler will be appearing as a guest on the album and contributing his thundering, hard-hitting, and technically precise style and skill, adding new blood and drive into the mix while staying true to MEGADETH’s roots.

BLABBERMOUTH.NET revealed the news that former SCAR THE MARTYR singer Henry Derek Bonner has joined the as-yet-unnamed new band formed by ex-MEGADETH members Chris Broderick (guitar) and Shawn Drover (drums).
Broderick stated about how his new group came together: “Through talking with Shawn Drover, we’ve talked about how we had all this material that was never gonna get released, all these killer, heavy riffs that we had written and stuff, and so we just decided, ‘Hey, why don’t we put the stuff out? Why don’t we form a band and get out these killer riffs, just to see what people think?’ So we formed a band, we’re working with a killer singer — he’s awesome — and we’ve got record labels that have made some good offers on the table, and we’re really excited about where that’s gonna go.”
Asked whether the new band has a name, Chris said: “Here’s the funny thing: we have many names. But the problem today is that there are so many bands out there that the first thing we’ve gotta do is run them by trademark and make sure that we can get… We don’t wanna run into the ‘GHOST’ and the ‘GHOST B.C.’ issue, right?! So we’re looking into trademarks on the names, and I would love to tell you, but we wanna save some of it for our official press release, and we’ll talk about the singer then, and we’ll have the record label on board by then.”
Regarding whether the musical ideas that are being used in the new band are things that were originally presented to MEGADETH and were turned down or if they are brand new compositions, Chris said: “Some of them were presented, but then some of them also… I’d be, like, ‘Oh, this isn’t appropriate for MEGADETH, their sound.’ I have a tendency to write very complex stuff, and so I’ve gotta watch it when I write and submit for MEGADETH under that kind of… I wanna make sure it’s not too complex and too crazy and all over the place. So those are the things that I would have held back.”
“Due to artistic and musical differences, it is with great reluctance that I announce my departure from Megadeth to pursue my own musical direction. I want all of you to know how much I appreciate the amount that you the fans have accepted and respected me as a member of Megadeth for the last seven years, but it is time for me to move on. I wish Dave and everyone in Megadeth all the best. I am working on a few things of my own and hope that when they come out, you will all dig it.”
The Mega-Daves of Megadeth has yet to release an official statement regarding 1/2 their band quitting.
In surprising news, drummer Shawn Drover announced today (Nov. 25) that he has quit Megadeth. The stickman had been in the legendary metal band for 10 years.
Megadeth are no strangers to lineup changes, with frontman Dave Mustaine being the only consistent member of the band throughout the group’s existence. Bassist David Ellefson is also an original member, but spent a handful of years out of Megadeth until rejoining the group in 2010.
Drover joined the band in 2004 and played on the band’s last four albums, including 2013′s ‘Super Collider.’ In an official statement (via Blabbermouth), the drummer wrote the following:
After 10 years, I have decided to quit Megadeth to pursue my own musical interests. I want to thank Dave Mustaine and the entire Megadeth family, as well as thanking all the amazing Megadeth fans around the world!!! I truly appreciate all of you. Stay tuned for info on my next musical journey.
There’s no word yet on Drover’s replacement. We’ll keep you posted as more news breaks.
