This is a review of the third edition of Getaway Rock Festival that was held in Gavle, Sweden during three hot days in July. The festival has a new organizer – the German FKP Skorpio – and we were eager to see how the festival was planned this year. We got to see some exclusive Swedish performances by Suicidal Tendencies, Nightwish, Venom, Manowar, Ministry and Yngwie Malmsteen to mention a few. Other acts that performed were Mustasch, Saxon, Finntroll, Satyricon, Behemoth, Devin Townsend Project and Ghost. Read more about the festival down below.
MANOWAR’s new studio album, The Lord Of Steel, will be released into worldwide retail on September 28, 2012 (dates may vary from territory to territory), following a limited-edition pre-release as the ‘Hammer Edition’ in collaboration with Metal Hammer (UK).
The retail edition of The Lord Of Steel will feature different mixes and mastering, spectacular new art by fantasy artist Ken Kelly, and other surprises. The album will be available as CD, limited-edition vinyl and digital album.

Described by the press as “a brutal and unstoppable force of molten metal” and “flawlessly heavy” The Lord Of Steel is a raw-to-the-bone production, merging vintage elements with the trademark sound MANOWAR have developed over the years. “When you have to make room for literally hundreds of other instruments such as Orchestras, Choirs, Marching Armies on Gods Of War for example, you have to create sonic space for that. The fewer instruments you have the louder they can be individually. As an artist you want to give your audience new experiences. This is not ‘elevator music’. This is an album that hits you hard right between the eyes and does not let up.” said Joey DeMaio.
For their twelfth studio album MANOWAR have tapped into the world of action heroes and their stories, writing their first song specifically for a Hollywood movie, ‘EL GRINGO’ and another one, Expendable, inspired by Sylvester Stallone’s action movie franchise ‘The Expendables’. The band has meanwhile confirmed their next movie project, ‘Soldiers’, for ‘The Expendables 2′ star Jean-Claude Van Damme.
From the furious title track and the pumping ‘Black List’, to the power ballad ‘Righteous Glory’ and the Ennio Morricone homage ‘El Gringo’ – The Lord Of Steel is full of surprises.

Despite its reputation for a tricky commute and arguably eyesore appearance (don’t confuse familiarity with satisfaction, fellow Londoners), the O2 Arena is a fantastic venue space for the Golden Gods and ample notice that metal is still as healthy as it ever was, showing no signs of bowing to austerity measures.
What would we do without this yearly event?
Well, for a start we’d probably have healthier livers and better hearing in our later years, however many would also be deprived of their chance to postpone their Download hangovers or simply be given a reason to wash off this year’s festival mud and watch some of the scene’s glitterati forget about their day jobs for an evening. Metal Hammer Magazine’s annual schmoozefest is upon us, and with it a dazzling array of leather, lip gloss & limp fringes.
Following their recent movie debut with the title song for the action-western EL GRINGO, MANOWAR have confirmed their next soundtrack project, ‘Soldiers’, starring action icon Jean Claude Van Damme.
Van Damme, who is Sylvester Stallone’s co star as an arch villain in ‘The Expendables 2’ said about the collaboration: “I met with Joey DeMaio and explained my vision for the entire soundtrack, he will be writing original score as well as bringing MANOWAR songs to the movie.”
Produced by Hollywood veteran and long-term Van Damme collaborator, action specialist Moshe Diamant (‘The Black Dahlia’, ‘Hard Target’, ‘Sudden Death’), ‘Soldiers’ follows Van Damme on an action packed quest for righteousness, retribution and resurrection.
“Joey DeMaio has the musical ability to write fighting hymns, soulful ballads and deeply emotional scores”, said producer Moshe Diamant.
“We’ve always had a passion for movies, especially those that celebrate the values that matter for us: righteousness, honor, bravery. The “El Gringo” Theme Is From MANOWAR’s Forthcoming Album
MANOWAR and After Dark Films announced today that a track from the new, forthcoming MANOWAR album will be the theme song for the After Dark Action franchise film, EL GRINGO, an action Western starring Scott Adkins (The Expendables 2, The Bourne Ultimatum), Christian Slater and Yvette Yates (Without Men).

EL GRINGO marks the first time MANOWAR has written a song specifically for a movie. The song depicts the struggle of a hero torn between his moral code and financial gain, and the challenge of being true to oneself and the real values in life — a recurring theme in MANOWAR’s music.

On March 12, 2012 a select group of special fans known as The Circle, who represent MANOWAR’s worldwide fan base, were invited to a private pre-listening session of the forthcoming new MANOWAR album, as well as a tour of Wisseloord Studios, Netherlands where the album will be mixed and mastered.

Fans from all over the world were chosen to represent their countries and receive news and updates to share them with their fellow brothers and sisters, and listen to first songs from the new album that is set for release in June/July 2012.
“It was important to us that the fans should be the first to hear the new music. After all, it is all for them!” explained Joey DeMaio.
DeMaio promised that the story behind the song ‘El Gringo’, that could not yet be explained due to confidentiality clauses, will soon be revealed and asked the fans to stay tuned on Facebook. He did mention the word ‘movie’ after the song was played.

Following the festival organizer’s failure to meet their contractual obligations, making MANOWAR’s headlining performance at Forces Of Metal Festival on June 8th 2012 impossible, the band’s performance is officially canceled.
Magic Circle Management have done everything in their power to save this performance for the sake of the fans, but the organizers have failed to find a solution to all of their problems and Magic Circle Management must protect the MANOWAR fans.
The band was looking forward to returning to Holland with next year’s massive festival production. Magic Circle management hope that Forces Of Metal will immediately refund all tickets sold to all those who purchased a ticket to see MANOWAR.
Those who have purchased tickets to Forces Of Metal, Netherlands to see MANOWAR are urged to immediately contact the promoter’s office to obtain a full refund.

Late Friday night, MANOWAR bassist Joey DeMaio appeared onstage at this year’s Getaway Rock Festival in Gävle, Sweden and announced that MANOWAR, the “Kings Of Metal”, will perform as next year’s festival headliners.
This will be the fulfillment of MANOWAR’s promise to return in triumph to the Swedish festival scene after 12 years.
“The Swedish fans have won; their belief, shown by their non acceptance of false metal is the reason we will finally return.” said DeMaio after the announcement. “There was no compromise in their voices, nor in our resolve; we promised each other that it’s all or nothing. It is no secret that there was a war between promoters as to who would bring Manowar back to Sweden and finally give the fans what they want and Getaway won.”
“This is a major step for us and naturally we are honored that we could secure MANOWAR as headliners for Getaway Rock Festival 2012.” said festival organizer Tomas Gernberg. “MANOWAR have a strong and loyal following in Sweden, Scandinavia and all over the world. We are proud to be the ones to bring the band back to Sweden.”
“We played our last festival in Sweden in 1999 and we promised we would not return until we could give our fans what they deserve and next year that promise will be fulfilled. We vow to crack the earth with power and might,” said Joey DeMaio.
“This will be a show which no true metal warrior will want to miss. We are calling all Manowarriors not only from Scandinavia, but from all over the world to join us for earth-shattering, face-melting metal.” continued DeMaio.
