Skogsrojet

REVIEW AND PHOTOS BY MARKO SYRJALA

Skogsrojet is one of these newer hard rock / metal festivals organized in the promised land of festivals, Sweden. The two day event is held in the outlying village of Rejmyre and the nearest town is Norrkoping about 40 kilometers away. The festival was held for the first time in 2006 and it has been increasing steadily year by year. Last years line-up included Alice Cooper, Doro, Testament and L.A. Guns and now the fans were treated to Twisted Sister, Helloween, Pretty Maids and Lita Ford. As you can see from the list of names, the event organizers rely heavily on traditional hard rock spiced with a few heavier acts. I don’t know if this kind of concept would work anywhere else, but in Sweden, but it works. This year, the festival again gathered thousands of participants who were eager to rock hard!!!

HELLFEST 2013

July 17th, 2013

Hellfest Festival 2013

@ Clisson, France

21st- 23rd June 2013

Review by Kirsty Birkett-Stubbs
Photography by Tess Donohoe  Hellfest

It may be some people’s epitome of hell, Michael Buble fans I’m looking at you, but for the metal/rock community Hellfest’s towering gateway looks positively pearly. This year’s line-up is so jam-packed that I was looking for the little glass jars and labels. You’d make a fortune if you could bottle any number of the diverse scope of bands on the bill, with the riffs left in natch, but I’d like them to play their sets first.

Once inside that gateway the layout is much the same as last year, and that isn’t meant in a well-they-clearly-couldn’t-be-arsed sense, because Hellfest could teach most others a thing or 20 on how to put together a fan-friendly festival. Except when it comes to the number of toilets on site that is.

Whilst the Hellfest tree still dominates in its stark simplicity, the hidden beer gardens have gained a snazzy gateway of their own, which invites you into the woodlands. Instead of a fairytale monster at the end of the path though, you’ll find a winebar, which is win-win really. And at night the scrap-metal merch stands and bars still glow with their own rooftop fires.

Stage-wise we’ve got Main Stage 1 and 2, which continue their staggered times so that as one plays, the other sets up, and vice versa. The result is no waiting around for soundchecks or bands to start, just back-to-back bam-bam-bam metal. A similar set-up is in place at the Altar and the Temple, where you can find black metal, death metal and the like, then there’s the Valley which is home to the stoner and doom types, and the Warzone where the punk and hardcore drops.

Hellfest 2013 – it’s like being welcomed home.

Lordi

The 12th of May, 2013, was a rainy day in London when the monsters finally rolled into town. We made our way to the Relentless Garage to see the mighty Lordi tear up London and check out what kind of reckless and shocking stage show they have prepared for us this time. It took 4 years for Lordi to return to the UK, and now they were back with a new album To Beast or not to Beast, slightly different line-up and sounding bigger and better than ever.

February 8th, 2013

The first single off Lordi’s new album “To Beast Or Not To Beast” called “The Riff” comes to the airwaves and all good digital platforms today, the 8th of February.

With it’s gripping opening and driving White Zombie like swagger, “The Riff” is just part of the band’s brand new album, but it promises to be a floor-filler up and down the country when the band plays 7 shows here in the UK in May.

LORDI Drummer Tonmi Lillman (Otus) Passes Away; Comments from friend/manager Matti Remes

February 15th, 2012
RIP Tonmi Lillman, OTUS of LORDI

RIP Tonmi Lillman, OTUS of LORDI

One of the greatest Finnish front line musicians has passed away. Wikipedia tells the legend, but many does not know who he really was.

During his long and colourful career Tonmi had the time to influence in many different bands, for example he has played drums in LORDI as OTUS, To/Die/For, Ajattara, Sinergy, Vanguard and with N.D.C.I.C. that was his latest new band. They had just finished recording their debut album, and it shall be the last evidence of his recorded career.

Tonmi was a great man. Loyal to his friends, a true professional for his co workers. In many ways he was a straight forward type of a guy, he always knew what he wanted and how to get it, still managing to be a fair, and an honest man.

Tonmi (Otus) played the drums in LORDI. He also was responsible for the graphic design on Lordi’s
European tours background animations, and visual designs of all their merchandise. As a producer Tonmi was well known, and he influenced on many albums also as a player and mixing engineer, like: Beherit, Bloodride, Chainhill, D-Creation, Fierce, Fear Of Domination, Heorot, In Silentio Noctis, Lie in Ruins, myGRAIN,, Roo, Rujo, Saattue, Serene Decay, Served Dead, ja V For Violence, jne…

But for many of us Tonmi Lillman was a friend. An adviser. A man who never pursued his own agendas before others. I see myself as privileged to known him and calling him as my friend. I will miss you so much, my friend. Rest in peace.

—————

“Our dear friend and bandmate, ‘Otus’ Tonmi Lillman, has sadly passed away [at the age of 38]. He will be greatly missed and we send our condolences to his family and friends.

“Otus: we thank You from the bottom of our hearts for the short time we got to know you and spend with you together. Rest in peace, friend.”

Members of LORDI always wear masks at interviews and have declared their desire for their personal identities to remain private. Therefore, Lillman’s status as a member of LORDI had never been publicly acknowledged until now.

Lillman joined LORDI in October 2010 as the replacement for Kita, who was fired from the band after he “made a decision to pursue his own career publicly as himself [under his real name], without his alter ego Kita.” LORDI explained at the time that revealing a member’s true identity was “in direct conflict with one of the cornerstones of LORDI’s image. Therefore it is not possible for [Kita] to continue as a member of the band anymore.”

In addition to LORDI, Tonmi previously played with TO/DIE/FOR, SINERGY and AJATTARA, and was part of the parody punk band KYLÄHULLUT (featuring CHILDREN OF BODOM frontman Alexi Laiho and KLAMYDIA vocalist Vesku Jokinen).

Tonmi, who was actually born Tommi Lillman but changed his name to Tomni in 2004, grew up surrounded by a large assortment of instruments. He received his first drum kit at age nine and started performing live at age 14.

A gifted musician, Lillman also played guitar, bass and keyboards. Over the course of his career, he taught digital recording and drums at Kouvola Musiikkiopisto (Kouvola Conservatoire) and played in numerous folk, dance and pop orchestras. He also sat behind the kit during the “Dimebag Beyond Forever” 2009 tour alongside Rainer “Raikku” Tuomikanto.

Lillman was featured on several albums as a studio musician, including REFLEXION and TWILIGHT OPHERA, and made a name for himself as a studio engineer, having mixed and recorded such bands as BEHERIT, LIE IN RUINS, MYGRAIN, RYTMIHÄIRIÖ and SAATTUE.

INTERVIEW BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

So. was originally founded in 1997 in a small Finnish town called Karkkila. The band are best known for their melodic rock tunes, energetic live shows and great musicianship. So. is fronted by a charismatic singer, Stala, who was once also known as Kita when he was still playing in Finnish monsterband Lordi. So. is heavily influenced by such names as: Slade, Sweet, T-Rex and 70’s Bowie as well as some 80’s L.A. hard rock bands. After releasing several independent EP’s the band has now put together their first album, containing of a "best of" selection of songs from the last 10 years. The band has written, recorded and produced the album themselves. In early 2011 the band will take part in the Finnish Eurovision Song Contest under the name of Stala & SO. The Finnish broadcasting company, YLE, invited the band into the competition to become Finland’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Germany. The band happily accepted the challenge. YLE’s invitation offered such a big boost to his own band, that Stala decided to drop off his monster mask and left to follow his dream and pursue his own career in music. Read on !

LORDI Drummer Gets The Ax For Unmasking Himself

October 4th, 2010
Kita as a member of LORDI

Kita as a member of LORDI (see below for his unmasked picture)

Finnish heavy metal monsters LORDI have released the following statement:

“It is our unfortunate task to inform that Kita [drums] is no longer a member of LORDI.

“Kita has made a decision to pursue his own career publicly as himself, without his alter ego Kita. This is in direct conflict with one of the cornerstones of LORDI’s image. Therefore it is not possible for him to continue as a member of the band anymore.

“LORDI will continue as always, masked and costumed, consisting of monster personas. Also, the upcoming tour will happen as planned.

“We thank Kita for the years he has been an important part of the band and our successes and wish him all the best in his future.”

STALA & SO. (formerly SO.), the Finnish melodic rock band which features in its ranks Kita (real name: Sampsa Astala) on vocals and ex-LORDI bassist Kalma (real name: Niko Hurme; also known by his current stage name Nick Gore), is competing to represent Finland in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest. There will be three weekly semifinals in January 2011, each featuring five artists. From every semifinal, three songs will proceed to the final. Finnish broadcasting company YLE will then pick a wild card among those artists who were eliminated in the semifinals to complete the final lineup of ten songs. During the final, three songs will be selected to proceed to the superfinal (to be held on February 12), where the Finnish entry for the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest will be chosen.

Formed in 1997, STALA & SO. consists of the following musicians:

Stala – Vocals

Nick Gore – Bass

Sami J. – Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals

Pate Vaughn – Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals

Hank – Drums

STALA & SO.’s new album will see the light of day sometime in early 2011. The CD was created by the power trio of Stala, Sami J. and Nick Gore, with a little help from a few carefully selected “hired guns.”

LORDI won the prestigious 2006 Eurovision Song Contest with the band’s “Hard Rock Hallelujah” anthem. The song swept Eurovision with 292 points, the highest score in the competition’s history.

“Babez For Breakfast”, the fifth studio album from LORDI, sold around 1,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 43 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

LORDI’s last album, “Deadache”, opened with 1,700 units back in November 2008 to debut at No. 13 on the Top New Artist Albums chart.

Sauna Open Air Metal Festival 2006

July 26th, 2006

Sauna Open Air Metal Festival, Tampere, Finland, 8th-10th of June 2006

Intro/outro by Luxi “come-out-and-play” Lahtinen

Mindless commentary, bullshitting, spitting, farting, headaches, mumbling, cursing, getting wasted, demons on shoulders, handclapping,  sophisticated way of using swear words, photographing, killing of the giants / slaughtering of the gayest, documenting of all kinds, etc. by Luxi “L.O.V.E. Machine”  Lahtinen & Niko “burn-in-Hell”  Karppinen

“Satan´s calling… Ave Luciferus… Ave Satanas! Heavy Metal is dangerous for your health. It reaps your soul and destroys your mind”.

If that´s so, we had arrived to the right place. Sauna Open Air Metal Festival opened its doors for the third time in its entire history, this time having booked some very interesting yet big names for the bill – Iggy & The Stooges, Lordi and Twisted Sister being probably those three bands that made most of the people travel to the festival, yet not underestimating all the other bands (like W.A.S.P., Finntroll, Stam1na – and so on…) that participated in this metallic event in one of the Finland´s biggests cities, Tampere.

This year´s bill was basically shared for three musical categories: Thursday was for a more rock-orientated bands (Blake, The Black League, Iggy & The Stooges, etc.), Friday for more extreme sounding bands (Finntroll, Diablo, Cradle of Filth, etc.) and Saturday, which was also sold-out due to bands like Lordi and Twisted Sister, we were treated to bands that have based their sounds on more of a tradiotional Heavy Metal sound, so basically everyone found some bands for his/her likings.

Also two (well-) aged (but not bald), dumb (but not stupid) and close-minded (but not THAT narrow-minded) reporters from the largely respected Canadian Metal-Rules.com webmagazine intruded through the gates of the festival just like last year, and the following diary was put together by them (Read the last year´s S.O.A.M. -festival diary from here), out of the (well-selected) bands at the Sauna Open Air Metal Festival 2006. Read on…
