19th November, 2014

Interview by Caitlin Smith

1349

While 1349 may not have been around when black metal exploded at the beginning of the 90s, but 17 years on they have still managed to carve themselves as a stable in any black metal fan’s repertoire. Heading out to once again spread their darkness across Europe on the back of their latest album release, Massive Cauldron of Chaos, Metal-rules catches up with vocalist Ravn in the Underworld, Camden for a chat about all things black metal.

It may have been 3 years since infamous black metal band 1349 spread their plague ridden offerings across UK soil, but they have certainly not been forgotten. Despite being a school night for most, the underworld seemed rife with a scourge of black metal fans packing into Underworld for a night of Norwegian darkness.

Marduk @ The Underworld

Marduk @ The Underworld

To call the Underworld grimy would be an injustice to a venue that has put on some of the best underground gigs over the years. It is however dark and dank, and the countless sweating bodies are only making it worse. Far from being off putting though, there really is no other real way to really experience black metal in all its putrid, vile form. With London being the only show in the UK and rumours that the show had sold out for the night, the venue is packed out with people from all corners of the UK, eager to catch Marduk going old school.

Celebrating past legends is something the metal scene has always hung onto. Who can miss the Dimebag tributes every year, the Dio stage at Bloodstock and the Jeff Hanneman tribute is surely not too far off. One that you rarely hear of though is pioneer and father of death metal Chuck Schuldiner. Aiming to change this are three of his old band members who joined him at during his career. Death to All is a celebration of the life of this influential musician by keeping alive his work from over the years.

TESTAMENT @ KoKo, Camden

Testament, Malefice and Xerath

30th November 2012

Review by Rhiannon Marley

Photography by Michelle Murphy

Hailed as ‘arguably one of the most popular American thrash groups of all time’, seasoned fireball Testament have plenty of hell-raising on their hands.

After the release of tenth studio album ‘Dark Roots of Earth’, they’re hitting the capital with a vengeance tonight – the first time I’ll have witnessed them since they annihilated Bloodstock Open Air back in August!

London fans have been waiting in anticipation for weeks, and judging by ticket-holders shivering in masses outside, it looks set to be a veteran guest-list: Kreator tees, thrash cuts and thinning barnets confirming Testament’s unwavering fan-base who, you can bet your life, queued with as much fervour in ’89 as they do in 2012.

Much like fellow symphonic metallers Nightwish, Xandria have faced front-woman dramas in recent years, the product of which is latest album Neverworld’s End and a switch to a more operatic style, which is hard to miss!

Whether you think of Sabaton as pioneers of modern power metal or a bunch of self-confessed ‘Village People in combats’, the fact is, they’re bloody good fun. Flying high with 2012’s Carolus Rex after a renowned post-recording line-up change, the belligerent Swedes are hitting the HMV Forum tonight in force – and from what I’ve heard, in FLAMES…

Reckless Love @ Barfly, London

11th October 2012

Review by Ollie Thomas

Photography by Natasha Truman

Reckless Love have enjoyed quite a bit of success on these shores recently, after performing to a packed tent at Download and very nearly stealing the show on their run supporting Black Veil Brides. No doubt helped by the meteoric rise of fellow glam-metal group Steel Panther, although they are a lot more serious and less of a gimmick, Reckless Love have easily appealed to the same audience and snowballed in popularity.

The day couldn’t have been any more miserable, freezing cold and raining, not to mention that it’s a Sunday night and transport was non-existent! But that was not going to dampen my mood, as I was on my way to a gig I had been waiting for, for a long time! I finally get to see Evile live!
