It may be some people’s epitome of hell, Michael Buble fans I’m looking at you, but for the metal/rock community Hellfest’s towering gateway looks positively pearly. This year’s line-up is so jam-packed that I was looking for the little glass jars and labels. You’d make a fortune if you could bottle any number of the diverse scope of bands on the bill, with the riffs left in natch, but I’d like them to play their sets first.
Once inside that gateway the layout is much the same as last year, and that isn’t meant in a well-they-clearly-couldn’t-be-arsed sense, because Hellfest could teach most others a thing or 20 on how to put together a fan-friendly festival. Except when it comes to the number of toilets on site that is.
Whilst the Hellfest tree still dominates in its stark simplicity, the hidden beer gardens have gained a snazzy gateway of their own, which invites you into the woodlands. Instead of a fairytale monster at the end of the path though, you’ll find a winebar, which is win-win really. And at night the scrap-metal merch stands and bars still glow with their own rooftop fires.
Stage-wise we’ve got Main Stage 1 and 2, which continue their staggered times so that as one plays, the other sets up, and vice versa. The result is no waiting around for soundchecks or bands to start, just back-to-back bam-bam-bam metal. A similar set-up is in place at the Altar and the Temple, where you can find black metal, death metal and the like, then there’s the Valley which is home to the stoner and doom types, and the Warzone where the punk and hardcore drops.

“Welcome to the show” – welcomed by KISS when headlining the second day of the Sweden Rock fest. Well, once again the Finnish Metal-Rules.com team made their annual roadtrip to Sweden Rock. Metal Rules has covered Swedenrock since 2001, therefore it is quite logical to cover the festival again. The 2013 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock. Over 70 metal and rock bands offered one hell of an experience for attendees. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economic situation worldwide. It has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article on several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The weather was tremendous during these four days. The Metal-Rules.com team was there witnessing bands, not for having some beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Rock on!

In support of their thirteenth studio album Phantom Antichrist, KREATOR will co-headline the “Legends Of Thrash” tour this fall through the U.S. & Canada with New York thrashers Overkill. Opening each night will be California’s Warbringer.
Kreator are known within the thrash metal community as something of legends, with their fast electric musical panache and flair for ferocious lyrics. They have become a corner stone of influence across the European scene as well as further afield. Tonight the German masters are accompanied by speedballs SSS, re-formed veterans, Xentrix and the up and rising metal troupe Evile. Read the rest of this entry »
In addition to their two recently announced shows in New York City, German thrash overlords KREATOR will be performing in southern California on Friday, November 15th at The Grove in Anaheim in support of their thirteenth studio album Phantom Antichrist. Returning to North America in support of their thirteenth studio album Phantom Antichrist, German thrash overlords KREATOR will be performing in New York City at Stage 48 with hometown thrashers Overkill on November 23rd & 24th.
KREATOR frontman/guitarist Mille Petrozza shares the following about the scheduled sonic devastation:
“We are more than excited to play with the strongest thrash metal band that ever came out of New York – the mighty Overkill! They’ve been a major influence on KREATOR and they are killer guys. Our friends from Warbringer will also join us. It does not get more brutal than this! ”
Pre-sale tickets are available at EnterTheVault.com. There will be a special limited number of tickets that will grant admission to BOTH shows. VIP tickets include a pre-show Meet & Greet with both KREATOR and Overkill, plus a special poster created to commemorate the event.
PHANTOM ANTICHRIST being the 13th album of Kreator shows the German Teutonic thrash metal legends are as aggressive and relevant as in the heyday of the 80’s metal. The band’s front man Mille Petrozza is the wanted person for interviews. Metal-Rules.Com got once again a great opportunity of chatting with the German thrash icon about the new album, cover art, producers etc. in the short, but informative interview. But above all Marko found something common to talk about with Mille, namely Kiss, what else?
“Around for almost 30 years now, Germanys biggest thrash metal export, KREATOR, have proven to be a persistent, innovative and unstoppable force. And they have stepped it up another level for their return to the UK and Ireland.
Three years have passed since KREATOR headlined in the UK, so we are extremely stoked to announce the thrash-titans return in April 2013, bringing their ‘PHANTOM ANTICHRIST’ tour to the UK and IRE.
Mille Petrozza (Vocalist/Guitarist) comments;
“Finally we are coming back to play 3 selected shows for our loyal fans in the UK! We will bring our 3D tour production to give you the full KREATOR treatment. Support acts will be announced in the next few days, so stay tuned. Also, we are looking forward to play for all our Irish fans again, it has been quite a while. Our promise to you is a TOTAL MASSACRE!”
After an extensive European trek in support of their latest, critically-acclaimed, record, ‘Phantom Antichrist’, this awesome 3D stage-show is an experience that UK and Irish fans should be prepared for… this isn’t a normal show, this should come with a warning sticker!!
Check out their latest video for ‘Civilisation Collapse’ for a taster:
You may not recognize the name, but his iconic covers are etched in the metalhead minds of millions. He was born May 19th, 1962 and has roots in Berkeley, Halifax, Manhattan, Boston, Greece and Berlin where his hardened vision caught the eyes of a young Karl Walterbach of Noise Records fame. His name is Philip Lawvere and he has a pleasure to kill! I mean, his insignia can be found on such classic album art from KREATOR, CELTIC FROST, RAGE, DEATH ROW, WARRANT, VENDETTA and HELLOWEEN!
BraveWords: You are probably most known from the Kreator material. How did you meet Mille? Were these original pieces or did Kreator commission you to create them? What happened after 1988? Opinion of Kreator art now? Have you pitched any to them lately?
Lawvere: “Fans will be surprised to learn that I have never met Mille, as with most of the bands at Noise. I dealt directly with Karl Walterbach in his office most of the time. Pleasure To Kill for example was something I had painted for myself, and which the band only chose to use later (Mille confirms that in interviews). As far as their cover art since then, they’ve reused my demon head in multiple images, even distorted it by adding things etc. That’s not really cool to do without permission of the artist… but I was hard to find, and some even thought I was dead. Just like Hieronymus Bosch, who’s art was also ‘lifted’ for their cover… but his copyright has long expired, since the law grants it ‘for the life of the author, plus 70 years’. No new covers are likely to happen either, while they are ignoring my royalties petition. People have told me to drop it, and use my association with them to get new work… but they don’t know me very well.”
When the co-tour package consisting of Kreator, Morbid Angel, Nile and the young thrash guns Fueled By Fire was announced, it wasn’t any shock as the tickets were sold out. Generally, these kinds of packages definitely pull hundreds of people to shows, resulting a number of sold out gigs. The whole Nosturi club was entirely packed and full when about 600 metal freaks crawled to testify these four bands in action. The night was a real dream come true for all the fans to witness these leading names on the metal map on the same night and the whole gig was a worth every cent for sure. Sweating raging pits were rolling all night long and the Metal-Rules.com was at present for obvious reasons.
“Civilization Collapse,” a track from KREATOR’s thirteenth studio album Phantom Antichrist, is now available for viewing on Metal Hammer U.K.’s homepage.
This past June, Germany’s tenacious thrash overlords attained their highest first week sales in North America and debuted at#130 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart plus #1 on the Heatseekers chart.
In Canada, Phantom Antichrist came in at #128 on the Top 200 Albums Chart and at #15 on the Top Hard Music Albums chart. In the band’s native Germany, the album debuted on the German Media Control chart at #5.
KREATOR are currently touring throughout Europe with Morbid Angel & Nile. They’ll be instigating a typhoon mosh pit on the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise to the Turks & Caicos Islands in the Caribbean this January.
The limited edition digi-pak version of Phantom Antichrist includes a bonus DVD; a 2-LP vinyl edition is also available. Both can be ordered from the Nuclear Blast Webshop.

The Teutonic Terror tour shine brightly at the co-headline tour by Accept and Kreator, two pillars of the Germanic metal in their own field. Support on the tour is the doom/melodic death metal band Swallow the Sun. On September 12, they stop at the Phoenix concert theater in Toronto. Read the rest of this entry »
In an era dominated by reunions and reissues, anniversaries and anthologies, you won’t find KREATOR guitarist/vocalist Mille Petrozza getting tripped up while looking backwards.
“This is the most important moment in your life,” Petrozza adamantly told Guitar World’s Josh Hart. “It’s not about what you’ve achieved in the past, it’s what you are doing now.”
When asked about the meaning of the phrase ‘phantom antichrist,’ Mille’s response was:
“The title came from a radio program I was listening to in Germany where they were talking about how Osama Bin Laden got killed and then thrown into the ocean — for religious religions. And there is no such thing as a sea burial in the Muslim religion, as far as I know. And that’s where I got the inspiration for the title from.
“But the song itself isn’t really a political thing. It’s more about a force that comes to earth, destroys all life and a new beginning starts with a new consciousness. The thing could be really anything. It’s a metaphor for a very, very brutal force that could be destructive but creative too. Basically, what it’s about — and what this album is about — is mass media manipulation. There’s a lot of lyrical variety on the album.
“You, of course, get the KREATOR treatment where I talk about politics — sometimes — but not in the sense of preaching politics, because I’m not a fan of that. I write songs that are more inspired by political issues rather than talking about my opinion, because politics are boring in my opinion. But there’s a lot of injustice and a lot of oppression, which is being supported by certain politicians and governments. That’s something KREATOR has been writing about forever and it’s always going to be a part of our lyrical themes. You can find anything from fiction to personal stuff to more social issues … like I said, the full KREATOR treatment.
Exclusive internet pre-sale tickets are available online at EnterTheVault.com through May 26th; afterwards, tickets will be on sale through all normal ticketing outlets.
Pre-order bundles for Phantom Antichrist can be ordered from the Nuclear Blast Webshop and include an exclusive t-shirt. The limited edition digi-pak version includes a bonus DVD; a 2-LP vinyl edition will be available July 3rd.
