A Casual Guide To The Music Of Original KISS Guitarist Ace Frehley

A Casual Guide To The Music Of Original KISS Guitarist Ace Frehley

As “Spaceman” Ace Frehley became one of rock’s most revered and entertaining guitarists with KISS from their formation in 1973 to his departure in 1982 plus his reunion with the band in 1996 until 2002. Frehley has also had a successful solo career with his own band Frehley’s Comet and under his own name. It is widely thought that his 1978 debut solo album is the best of the original KISS self-titled solo albums. His solo career is the most high profile of all the musicians that have performed in KISS.

This is not specifically a book on KISS but of course references to the band are plentiful. The first part of the book offers a potted history of Spaceman’s career from his upbringing and musical tastes and influences to the formation of his earlier bands and first meeting Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. In the second half of this book you’ll find a wealth of information on Frehley, from a timeline of important events and releases, to a discography, trivia, reviews, influences and words from the man himself as well as some thoughts on his music from fellow rock scribes. It’s a handy little book that will sit comfortably on the bookshelf next to fellow books on other world class rock guitarists.

From the author of books on Paul Stanley, Richie Sambora, Brian May and Joe Perry, Space Invader celebrates Frehley’s musical legacy. Also included are previously unseen live photographs of this awesome American guitar rock icon.

Space Invader is essential reading for KISS and Ace Frehley fans.

KISS KRUISE V feat. Kiss, Lita Ford, Fozzy, The Dead Daisies, Steel Panther and more

January 22nd, 2016

Oct 28 – Nov 3 2015

KISS Kruise is an annual festival which is held on a most luxurious cruise liner in the Caribbean. The event brings together the band’s most loyal and die-hard fans around the world. What makes this event unique, is the fact that fans can hear rarities and obscure songs that the band does not play elsewhere. The band is also very interactive with fans. Everyone has access, for example, to get a picture with the band and everyone will get signed memorabilia. The band members are involved in various activities. Paul Stanley was cooking pizza in front of people and Gene Simmons and his family were judges in belly flop contest. Tommy Thayer played guitar solos and the competitors tried to recognize the solos and Eric Singer was judging “almost famous” competition where KISS cover bands were playing against each other. The whole Kruise is about KISS, of course, but the line-up also included many other great bands and artists. This year included: Steel Panther, Lita Ford, Fozzy, Dead Daisies, and a number of smaller bands. This report is a synopsis of KISS Kruise V including the concerts and other interesting events. Anton Fig is a South African / American drummer who is best known for his work David Letterman’s house band, the CBS Orchestra. Fig has been the drummer on Letterman’s television shows since 1986. During this period Fig played with such artists as Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Winwood and Tony Bennett. The CBS Orchestra has also backed up a host of artists in other venues. They played in Hall of Fame ceremonies and with B.B. King at the closing ceremonies of the summer 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Fig is also a well-known session drummer. He has recorded with such names as Mick Jagger, Gary Moore, Madonna, Joe Satriani, Paul Putterfield, Sebastian Bach and Michael Monroe. In 1978 he played on KISS guitarist Ace Frehley’s solo debut. He replaced Peter Criss on the KISS albums DYNASTY and UNMASKED, and later on he appeared on several Frehley’s albums including FREHLEY’COMET, LIVE+1, TROUBLE WALKIN and ANOMALY. In May 2015, David Letterman announced his retirement, and the last episode of the show aired on the 20th of May. Fig soon joined in the ranks of Joe Bonamassa’s band, with whom he had already worked with for close to 10 years on different occasions. I met a good-humored Anton in Helsinki last October when the Joe Bonamassa band visited Helsinki. Here is the now fully assembled transcription for what the man had to say about the end of Letterman show, working with Joe Bonamassa, and of course, a bit about Ace Frehley, KISS stories, and a little more … Read on!

AVANTASIA: Bruce Kulick on new album!

November 7th, 2015

He‘s become part of rock history as the lead guitarist of KISS, MICHAEL BOLTON, MEAT LOAF and GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. And like a bat out of hell, he was back in the studio to record some lead guitars for the newAVANTASIA album. Guitar legend, solo artist and Tobi‘s dear friend Bruce Kulick! AVANTASIA‘s new album Ghostlights will be released on January, 29th 2016 via Nuclear Blast Records.

“I remember I was eleven years old when I had a KISS Crazy Nights poster on the wall”, commented Tobi. “20 years later Bruce asked me to co-write and lay down vocals for a song on his solo album BKIII (highly recommended to check out), which was a great honor for me. Bruce is a great guy, a pro and an outstanding guitar player, he comes from a different background than me, which makes it even more exciting to have him on theGhostlights album (out January 2016 via Nuclear Blast).”

KISS – Guitarist Tommy Thayer

August 5th, 2015

The legendary KISS arrived in Europe in June after a two year break. The bands tour, The 40’th Anniversary tour, did not come to Scandinavia at all, so I traveled to the Netherlands, where the band played a sold-out gig in the Ziggo Dome arena in Amsterdam. Before the show I had the opportunity to sit down with the band’s long-term guitarist, Tommy Thayer. The good-humored man told not only all the latest KISS news, but also about what it is like to have been in the band for more than 12 years, and what the future might hold for the band. Read on!

Richie Scarlet

Richie Scarlet is a multi-talented musician and producer from New York. Scarlet has created a long career as a solo artist and he also worked with such names as Dennis Dunaway, Rock and Sebastian Bach, among others. However, Scarlet is best known for his long-standing collaboration with the legendary KISS guitarist Ace Frehley. Later, he played on a successful TROUBLE WALKIN album in 1989 and stayed in the band until 1996, when Ace rejoined KISS. Now he is back in Frehley’s’ band for the third time. The Ace Frehley band started its European tour at Sweden Rock at the beginning of June, and I met a good-humored Richie backstage after the show and here’s what I got caught on the tape. August 9th, 2014

Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductee and former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley will perform on  the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon next Tuesday, August 12, 2014, sitting in with The Roots for the show’s entirety.

Additionally, a one time only in-store appearance and signing at the Best Buy in Union Square, NYC will take place Tuesday August 19th at 6PM. Fans will be able to get their own copy of Space Invader signed by the space man himself.

1. Space Invader
2. Gimme A Feelin’
3. I Wanna Hold You
4. Change
5. Toys
6. Immortal Pleasures
7. Inside The Vortex
8. What Every Girl Wants
9. Past The Milky Way
10. Reckless
11. The Joker
12. Starship

ACE FREHLEY will release Space Invader, his first new solo album in five years, via Entertainment One Music (eOne Music) on August 19th. The album features nine brand new original songs, including the first single, “Gimme a Feelin’,” as well as a cover of Steve Miller’s classic rock staple “The Joker.” Frehley also tapped long time friend and artist Ken Kelly to create the album art for Space Invader. Kelly created the iconic cover art for two of KISS’s best selling LPS, Destroyer (1976) and Love Gun (1977).

Widely known as the original “Space Ace” and founding guitarist for 16 cumulative years (over 2 tenures) of the multi platinum selling rock band KISS, Frehley is demonstrably the most popular original member.  In addition to having the best selling solo album career (vintage or current) among the original foursome, Frehley’s self titled Ace Frehley (1978), went on to sell over one million copies, producing the only Top 40 single, “New York Groove,” from any of the legendary KISS solo albums. The massive hit was most recently featured in an episode of cult show Entourage and was also KISS’ second best selling download in 2012, besting such KISS Army anthems as “I Was Made For Lovin’ You,” “Beth” and “Calling Dr. Love” even after 36 years.

Since departing from KISS, Frehley went on to release four more solo albums and one live EP including his most recent effort, Anomaly in 2009, which debuted at #27 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and received a welcoming response among critics.

KISS – St. John’s, NL Saturday August 3rd, 2013

September 2nd, 2013

Saturday August 3rd, 2013
Mile One Center
St. John’s, NL

Review & Photo’s by Celtic Bob

This was Kiss’ second ever only show in this great Province (The first was 2011 in mine and EvilG’s hometown) and the first of 2 back to back nights at Mile One. The venue holds about 6-7,000 people so you get a decent view even if you are in the nosebleed seats.

I was in attendance at the 2011 outdoor show (REVIEW HERE) in the midst of a torrential rainstorm (and 25k + Fans) that began just moments before the band hit the stage. This time it was indoors so it would be a much more enjoyable evening.

RICHIE SCARLET – Solo artist, ex-Ace Frehley band, Sebastian Bach, Mountain, etc.

Richie Scarlet, nicknamed ”The Emperor of Rock ’n Roll”, is multi-talented musician and producer from New York. Hellfest Festival 2013

@ Clisson, France

21st– 23rd June 2013

Review by Kirsty Birkett-Stubbs
Photography by Tess Donohoe  Hellfest

It may be some people’s epitome of hell, Michael Buble fans I’m looking at you, but for the metal/rock community Hellfest’s towering gateway looks positively pearly. This year’s line-up is so jam-packed that I was looking for the little glass jars and labels. You’d make a fortune if you could bottle any number of the diverse scope of bands on the bill, with the riffs left in natch, but I’d like them to play their sets first.

Once inside that gateway the layout is much the same as last year, and that isn’t meant in a well-they-clearly-couldn’t-be-arsed sense, because Hellfest could teach most others a thing or 20 on how to put together a fan-friendly festival. Except when it comes to the number of toilets on site that is.

Whilst the Hellfest tree still dominates in its stark simplicity, the hidden beer gardens have gained a snazzy gateway of their own, which invites you into the woodlands. Instead of a fairytale monster at the end of the path though, you’ll find a winebar, which is win-win really. And at night the scrap-metal merch stands and bars still glow with their own rooftop fires.

Stage-wise we’ve got Main Stage 1 and 2, which continue their staggered times so that as one plays, the other sets up, and vice versa. The result is no waiting around for soundchecks or bands to start, just back-to-back bam-bam-bam metal. A similar set-up is in place at the Altar and the Temple, where you can find black metal, death metal and the like, then there’s the Valley which is home to the stoner and doom types, and the Warzone where the punk and hardcore drops.

Hellfest 2013 – it’s like being welcomed home.

Swedenrock 2013

Article and pictures by Arto Lehtinen and Marko Syrjälä

“Welcome to the show” – welcomed by KISS  when headlining the second day of the Sweden Rock fest. Well, once again the Finnish team made their annual roadtrip to Sweden Rock. Metal Rules has covered Swedenrock since 2001, therefore it is quite logical to cover the festival again. The 2013 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock. Over 70 metal and rock bands offered one hell of an experience for attendees. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economic situation worldwide. It has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article on several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The weather was tremendous during these four days. The team was there witnessing bands, not for having some beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Rock on!
