STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – Following a slew of sold out headlining shows on their first North American tour in over three years, Sweden’s heavyweight progressive metal act, Katatonia, hit their first major bump in the road over the weekend when the band realized they had two guitars, straps, and wireless transmitters stolen from them at their stop in St. Paul on Saturday.
The band issued the following statement…
“Unfortunately tonight’s gig reached an all time low. Two of our guitars got stolen (including our straps with wireless transmitters), obviously causing performance difficulties, frustration and anger. Then against all odds, further technical problems kept on coming down one after another during the show. Apologies goes out to our fans in Minnesota for having to go through this.” The stolen Mayones guitars were to be the grand prize in two Katatonia giveaways that were launched in celebration of the otherwise extremely successful headlining run on the “Night Over North America” tour. Fans are encouraged to check Craigslist, Ebay, local pawnshops, etc. for the missing guitars, and report any suspicious activity to the band.
Katatonia will continue to forge across North America and back, as they round out the final two weeks of the tour.

Night is the New Day is Katatonia’s eighth studio album. It was recorded throughout July 2009 and was co-produced, engineered and mixed by David Castillo. A continuation of the heaviness, depth and atmosphere of their previous album, Night Is the New Day is also a more multi-dimensional effort – waltzing between prog moments, doom, folk and the classic melodic anthems that are the staple of Katatonia’s uncompromising sound.
Katatonia has been relentlessly touring across Europe in support of their 2009 full-length release, Night is the New Day, which sold over 2,000 copies in the US in its first week. The band also released an EP, ‘The Longest Year’, earlier this spring. The latest music video for the EP’s title track can be viewed at: http://www.nightisthenewday.com/. Now the band is set to unleash their brand of melancholy metal on North America, headlining the MetalSucks.net sponsored, “Night Over North America” tour. With easily one of the best tour packages I can remember in support, it was time for Katatonia to launch their first ever headlining tour of North America. It wasn’t too long ago that they were supporting Moonspell in what was another well built tour package. Along for the ride this time were Swallow the Sun and Insomnium, both hailing from Finland, as well as their fellow Swedes in Scar Symmetry. I guess sometimes Finns and Swedes can get along! To say I was excited for this lineup would be the understatement of the year. Without a single bad or local band on the bill, it was certain to be a good night for metal.
I was recently able to sit down with founding members Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse of Katatonia on their current and first ever tour of the < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />United States opening for Moonspell and ask them some questions.
