SWEDENROCK 2011

August 1st, 2011

swedenrock2011.jpg

Let Me Hear You Scream Sweden Rockkkk.Well the annual roadtrip to Swedenrock by the Finnish Metal Rules.com team is already into it’s 11th year!  The  2011 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock in the line-up. Over 70 metal and rock bands offered one hell of an experience for the attendees. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economic situation worldwide and the ticket price had risen a little bit. ver these 11 years of coverage, it has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article of several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The  weather once again showed positive and negative aspects like in 2010. It either rained or was windy with a little sunshine. But we were there for bands, not for having some beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Enjoy or die!!!

JUDAS PRIEST Bassist Ian Hill – “We Have Already Written An Album’s Worth Of Material”

July 11th, 2011
JUDAS PRIEST - 2011 Line-up

JUDAS PRIEST - 2011 Line-up

Greece’s Rockpages sat down with JUDAS PRIEST’s bassist Ian Hill right before the band’s appearance in Athens last Wednesday. Hill reavealed that the band has already prepared songs for their new album, and of course he talked about K.K. Downing’s recent departure. An excerpt follows:

Q: Well, Ian, here you are for the Epitaph World Tour but this is not the end for Judas Priest as you have stated.

A: “No, it’s not the end of Judas Priest… we’ve never intended to “kill” the band. We just need to slow down a little bit as we’ve touring and doing albums almost constantly for 40 years now. It really takes a large chunk of your life; so, we have to be… well… not choosey of where we will play in the future but how many shows we can do in a specific time. The European Festivals will always be a good option but we can’t do anymore the big touring thing… leave here, go to South America, then straight to USA, Japan, Australia… you know. Not that we don’t enjoy it; we love it! We love to travel, we love to visit places and do a little bit of sightseeing, especially when we have a day off. Bear in mind that we’ve been doing this for 40 years. After 6 months not being on the road, you get a little bit itchy because you need to be on stage again (laughs)! But, unfortunately, you don’t get any younger. Of course, we will continue to record as well… we have already written an album’s worth of material. Three songs are properly recorded and roughly mixed. I think that the record company might put out something, just a bit of something so as to let the fans know of what’s coming along. It’s gonna be a great album and it’s gonna carry on from where Angel Of Retribution left off. We got Nostradamus out of our system and now we are heading towards classic Priest metal… the screams, the fast, the slow and the heavy! A little bit of everything. A big thank you for all that we are doing goes out to the fans.”

JUDAS PRIEST Frontman Rob Halford – “We Have Other Ideas We Want To Explore, But We Wanted To Make At Least One More Great Metal Album”

July 3rd, 2011
JUDAS PRIEST - 2011 Line-up

JUDAS PRIEST - 2011 Line-up

UK metal gods JUDAS PRIEST – Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, Ian Hill, Scott Travis, and new guitarist Richie Faulkner – met with the members of the media in at the Renaissance Hotel at Highland and Hollywood in Los Angeles, CA on May 24th. Quotes and comments from the conference are available below courtesy of Ultimate-Guitar.com:

Q: You have called the Epitaph Tour your final world tour. Will the band continue making music when the tour is over?

Tipton: “It’s not the end of the band by any means but it is our last world tour. It takes a big chunk out of your life—it’s 18 months really we’ll be out there and we’ve been doing it for nearly 40 years now. It’s not to say that it will be our last show and we certainly will—and have—been recording. So the chances are there will be an album as well next year. We would never turn down the appropriate dates if we were offered them at some point in the future. But it will be our last world tour—it’s probably the last chance most people will get to see Judas Priest live. We want to go out one final time and play our songs and just be together with the audience.”

Halford: “What we’ve said is you know when the cowboy rides into the sunset on his horse and it looks really cool? Well, we want to do the same things on our bikes, on our motorbikes, but we don’t want to fall off. I think unfortunately there’s kind of an area in show business when you really need to look at what you got and what you’ve done and be proud of it and then make that exit in a really classy way and that’s what we’re attempting to do.”

Q: You mentioned you have been working on new songs?

Tipton: “We used quite a mixed bag and we’ve concentrated on two things: the archetypal Priest double-kick screaming tracks and really there’s more sentiment in this album. In a way, I suppose it’s also our farewell album although it might not be our last one. There are some anthems on there, which pay tribute to our fans and it’s our way of saying thank you and the lyrics relate to that—just saying thank you to the fans for all the years.”

Halford: “It’s been a real pleasure to write it because at this point if there’s anything left to prove, there really isn’t anything left to prove. We’ve been there, done that, and got the t-shirt type of thing. But I think what really is important is we still have this desire, this passion and it hasn’t diminished in nearly 40 years. We still have this tremendous love of what we do in heavy metal music and the fans that have supported us are the constant inspiration. I think we all agree that we very happy with the way that Nostradamus came out and it was a great moment for us because we had been waiting forever to make this concept record. And that’s not the end with Nostradamus—we have other ideas we want to explore later. But we wanted to make at least, as Glenn said, one more great metal album that really has all the great traditions and attributes of Priest in the music. And we think we’ve got that down pretty much.”

THIN LIZZY SET TO ROCK NORTH AMERICA THIS FALL OPENING FOR JUDAS PRIEST

June 13th, 2011

It’s almost impossible to find a modern day hard rock/heavy metal band that doesn’t list Thin Lizzy as an influence.
So the band couldn’t have picked a better time to launch an arena tour, opening for Judas Priest on their farewell “Epitaph Tour.”

Comprised of a kick ass line-up featuring such Phil Lynott-era Lizzies as guitarist Scott Gorham, drummer Brian Downey, and keyboardist Darren Wharton, as well as Guns N’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus, former Almighty singer/guitarist Ricky Warwick, and bassist Marco Mendoza, Lizzy is aiming to bring the house down each night.

Understandably Lizzy is looking forward to teaming up with metal legends Priest and Black Label Society this fall.
“One of the big perks of being a member of Thin Lizzy is that sometimes we get to share the stage with other bands that have helped to shape the music we hear today,” explains Warwick. “Judas Priest helped define a genre and I am really looking forward to seeing them on tour.”

Thin Lizzy became one of rock’s top bands during the 1970’s, on the strength of the hits “Jailbreak,” “The Boys Are Back In Town,” “Dancing in the Moonlight,” and “Waiting for an Alibi,” Lynott’s poetic-yet-tough lyrics, and the highly influential dual guitar attack of Gorham and which ever second guitarist he was paired up with at the time (Brian Robertson, the late Gary Moore, Snowy White, or John Sykes). Lizzy split up in 1983, before Lynott passed away in 1986.

However, Lizzy’s stature has continued to grow over the years, as their songs have been covered by a wide variety of artists, including Metallica (“Whiskey in the Jar”), Smashing Pumpkins (“Dancing in the Moonlight”), Bon Jovi (“The Boys Are Back In Town”), Sade (“Still in Love with You”), the Foo Fighters (“Bad Reputation”), and Mastodon (“Emerald”), among other rock bands.

Gorham especially is looking forward to Lizzy’s triumphant return to the States. “We love playing in the USA and it will be great to show the rest of the States what we are made of. We are all fired and ready to kick some ass!”

Sauna Open Air festival 2011, Tampere, Finland (June 9-11)

June 12th, 2011

SOA banner 2011.jpg

Sauna Open Air Festival 2011, 9th-11th June Tampere, Finland

Review by Luxi Lahtinen, live pictures by Luxi Lahtinen & Terhi Pihlaja

The 8th Sauna Open Air festival was celebrated in a very sunny and warm weather, unlike in some other years – and this year the festival also broke their own record, welcoming as many as 26,000 people within the three days.

The SOA festival has truly found an important place among the other Finnish summer festivals, concentrating mostly on old-school Heavy/Thrash Metal and Hard Rock bands – and turning the festival around for the past 3-4 years or so, by booking many internationally big names for the three-day Metal feasts; from Kiss to Megadeth to Dio to Whitesnake to Scorpions to Type O Negatíve – and the list goes on.

This year, the festival organizers had very special grins – wider than ever before, spread all over their faces – and for some very good reasons. Two of the biggest headliners, Ozzy Osbourne and Judas Priest, arrived at SOA for the first time, with bands like Saxon, Accept, Doro, Cavalera Conspiracy, Joey Belladonna and many others proving to be good company to them.

Read on – the following article is based on the seven most interesting and musically satisfying bands of this year’s festival from your truly point of view.

JUDAS PRIEST ROCKED ‘AMERICAN IDOL’ WEDNESDAY NIGHT!

May 26th, 2011

No, your eyes did not deceive you – the one and only Judas Priest just debuted their new guitarist, Richie Faulkner, on ‘American Idol’! Ripping through a medley that included kick ass renditions of two ‘British Steel’ classics (“Living After Midnight” and “Breakin’ the Law”) with major Priest fan – and this season ‘American Idol’ hopeful – James Durbin joining in on vocals.

This is the second time that Durbin has professed his admiration for Priest on the show, as he wowed judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler a while back with a rendition of “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’.” Although Durbin was recently voted off the show, he undoubtedly has a bright rocking future ahead, as evidenced by his multi-octave vocal range.

Judas Priest recently announced plans to launch their farewell Epitaph Tour, which will take them around the world, including a just-announced U.S. tour of arenas from October through December, which will also feature opening acts Black Label Society and Thin Lizzy.

Speaking on Wednesday to the Rolling Stone website, Priest singer Rob Halford had the following to say about what fans can expect on the group’s forthcoming trek. “We’re pulling out all the stops. We’ve built a brand new stage set, we’ve got all the effects that people love us for – the lasers, the fire, the bombs, the smoke, new costumes, and the bike. It’s just a full-on metal extravaganza.”

Few heavy metal bands have managed to scale the heights that Judas Priest has during their nearly 40 year career. Responsible for not only issuing some of metal’s all-time classic albums (‘British Steel,’ ‘Screaming for Vengeance,’ and ‘Painkiller’) and anthems (the aforementioned “Breaking the Law” and “Living After Midnight,” and “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming”), the group has been one of the leading arena rock acts for decades, and single-handedly introduced the “leather look” to heavy metal.

And now Judas Priest are set to blast their way round the world one final time.

Having thought long and hard about how to proceed, singer Rob Halford, guitarist Glenn Tipton, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis unanimously agreed that they should go ahead with the tour and not let fans around the world down.

Fate also stepped in and delivered the perfect replacement – 31 year-old British guitar player Richie Faulkner (pictured below; DIRTY DEEDS, VOODOO SIX, LAUREN HARRIS) – he has blended into the band perfectly and is a great talent who is going to set the stage on fire, according to a press release.

The Epitaph Tour will include songs from every Priest studio album and also tracks that they have never before performed on stage plus all the old favourites.

With a new album due to be released next year, the ‘metal gods’ are preparing to tour the planet once more. Heavy metal at it’s best complete with lasers, lights, bikes and hellfire! It’s a show not too be missed!”

The band respect his decision and naturally all wish him well.

The Artisan News Service caught up with JUDAS PRIEST drummer Scott Travis and asked him about the news that shocked the metal world, the departure of guitarist K.K. Downing:

“You have to have that burning desire in your heart to play heavy metal music,” Travis stated. “We all start at a young age and it’s not because of money, fan or girls, you start because you love the music. So if he’s not feeling that anymore, I give him props for taking himself out of the game.”

Check out the entire chat below:

K.K. Downing issued the following press release earlier today:

“Dear friends,

It is with much regret that I will not be with you this summer. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your concerns about my health. Please rest assured that I am O.K.

There has been an ongoing breakdown in working relationship between myself, elements of the band, and the band’s management for some time.

Therefore I have decided to step down rather than to tour with negative sentiments as I feel that this would be a deception to you, our cherished fans.

However I would urge you to please support the Priest as I have no doubt that it will be a show not to be missed.

All my love and respect.”
