Epica & Alestorm – Toronto, October 31, 2012
Epica & Alestorm
Support: System Divide & Insomnium
Live at the Opera House
Toronto, Canada
October 31, 2012
Review and photos by Ag Babin
It was one of the most diverse crowds that made their way to the Opera House for the Epica and Alestorm show, a truly unique event. In addition to the excitement of a strong lineup on this tour, the magic of Halloween filled the venue with fancy costumes and the usual candy. So, on this rainy evening an army of pirates and other strange creatures gathered together to celebrate the holiday in the best possible way.

HELLFEST FESTIVAL 2012
Hellfest Festival 2012
@ Clisson, France
15th – 17th June 2012
Move over Batman – there’s a new symbol dominating the night sky as Hellfest’s mighty H calls brothers to arms for a weekend, that quite frankly, would strike fear into the heart of many a-charging army. As one of the official t-shirt’s states: Keep repeating – it’s only music… it’s only music… it’s only music…

INSOMNIUM presents song from upcoming album “One For Sorrow”
Finland’s INSOMNIUM is now giving fans their first taste of their upcoming album, “One For Sorrow”, with the online debut of “Unsung”. As one of the faster and heavier songs from the diverse album, “Unsung” is as epic as it is melodic, as melancholic as it is majestic, and as brutal as it is beautiful.
Ville Friman (guitar) comments on the song: “‘Unsung’ was the last song we finished only just one day before hitting the studio. It’s a bit more in vein of early INSOMNIUM and definitely reminds us from our roots. Regardless of bowing to past, this song gives you good insight of the versatility of ‘One For Sorrow’ and also introduces something new in terms of clean vocals in courtesy of myself. Hope you enjoy the song and stay tuned for updates concerning the pre-order packages!”

In the spring of 2011, INSOMNIUM entered the studio to record “One For Sorrow”. While drums, bass, keyboards and vocals were recorded in Finland and guitars in Gothenburg, Sweden, the album still has a remarkable cohesiveness and clarity of sound. “One For Sorrow” will be released on October 12th in Finland, October 17th in the rest of Europe, and October 18th in North America-and the releases will be followed by a European headlining run in November.
Formed in 1997 in the town of Joensuu in Eastern Finland, INSOMNIUM released two demos that led to a deal with UK label Candlelight Records. Founding members Markus Hirvonen (drums), Ville Friman (guitars), and Niilo Sevänen (vocals and bass) added guitarist Ville Vänni to the band for the release of their Candlelight debut in 2001. Throughout the following decade, the band went on to release four more critically acclaimed albums-the most recent of which, 2009′s “Across the Dark”, entered the Finnish album charts at #5. Along the way, they picked up a couple of awards in their homeland for Best Band and Best Album.

INSOMNIUM Sign Worldwide Deal With Century Media Records
INSOMNIUM Sign Worldwide Deal With Century Media Records
Century Media Records is proud to announce the signing of INSOMNIUM who recently won the Finnish Metal Awards earlier this year for Best Band and Best Album (for the 2009 album “Across The Dark”). The band comments: “We are very happy to announce that we have signed a deal with the mighty Century Media Records. Throughout the spring and summer we negotiated with several attractive labels but in the end it was clear that Century Media would be our home for the years to come. Their enthusiasm, professionalism and genuine love for music made an instant impact on us. We are convinced that this alliance will lead to even greater achievements in the future and also avails us to tour outside Europe more often. And naturally it is a great honor for us to stand in the same team with the likes of Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy, Paradise Lost, The Haunted, Finntroll and Turisas. A new exciting chapter in the story of Insomnium has begun!
We want to thank Jens Prueter and the whole Century Media crew for putting their trust in us. We thank our manager Jukka Varmo for handling the negotiations very smoothly. We also wish to thank our previous label Candlelight Records for the decade that we spent with them. We salute you all!”
Jens Prueter, Head Of A&R Century Media Europe: “It’s great to welcome a band that has developed over the past year to one of the most exciting bands in the Metal scene. I always liked their unique mix of Finnish melancholy with Melodic Death Metal and even more so they always blew my mind seeing them live. You can feel that this is a band of brothers who haven’t changed their line-up since their debut album in 2002. In case of doubt go and see them on their tour with Dark Tranquillity this Fall – you won’t be disappointed! I cheer my horns up North and thank Insomnium for their trust in Century Media Records.”
Over the last decade Insomnium has slowly but surely made itself a household name among the melodic deathsters. Formed in 1997 in a somnolent town of Joensuu, in Eastern Finland, these stern men have ever since redefined the boundaries of the genre. Two highly acclaimed demos already set the standard and in 2001 the band signed to UK label Candlelight Records
At this point the founding members Markus Hirvonen (drums), Ville Friman (guitars) and Niilo Sevänen (vocals and bass) attached guitarist Ville Vänni to the band. Since then INSOMNIUM released four highly acclaimed albums that combine aggression and violent riffing to melancholic atmosphere – a marriage of Scandinavian death metal and traditional Finnish tunes, catchy but progressive, melodic but brutal.
After long tours in Europe and North America with bands like Amorphis, Katatonia, Enslaved, Satyricon and their last co-headline tour with Ghost Brigade, Insomnium will be main support to Dark Tranquillity this Fall before they enter the studio to record the follow-up to their 2009 album “Across The Dark”. Stay tuned!

Katatonia / Scar Symmetry / Insomnium / Swallow the Sun – Live in NYC: 09/06/07

September 6, 2007
BB King’s
New York, NY
* Live Review and Photos by Shaq
With easily one of the best tour packages I can remember in support, it was time for Katatonia to launch their first ever headlining tour of North America. It wasn’t too long ago that they were supporting Moonspell in what was another well built tour package. Along for the ride this time were Swallow the Sun and Insomnium, both hailing from Finland, as well as their fellow Swedes in Scar Symmetry. I guess sometimes Finns and Swedes can get along! To say I was excited for this lineup would be the understatement of the year. Without a single bad or local band on the bill, it was certain to be a good night for metal.
