Guitarist Brent Doerner Leaves HELIX

June 25th, 2012
HELIX

HELIX

It is now official, lead guitarist Brent Doerner has decided to leave Canadian hard rockers HELIX.

Says the band: “Although we are sad to hear the news, we wish Brent all the best in his future. Brent is a huge part of the band and will be truly missed by fans from around the world to the Helix family. Brent’s last shows will be September 28th at the Rockpile in Toronto and September 29th in Stratford, Ontario. Thanks for all the music and the lifelong memories you’ve brought to the band Brent… YOU ROCK!!!”

Helix singer Brian Vollmer recently issued the following update:

“Finished off the artwork for the new Christmas single. Once again, it was done by Babyjack Design out of Toronto, and once again they did a great job. The song (single) will be released in a variety of different ways. Fans will be able to purchase a collector’s item green vinyl 7″ record with a red label. Side Two will have the song ‘Jingle Bells’, which can be heard on the Heavy Mental Christmas CD. Inside the jacket will also be a card with a unique number on it. This allows the purchaser to go to Standard Vinyl’s website and digitally download the song. The record will sell for $19.99 plus S&H. A great Christmas present! For those fans who want to buy the song on CD, it will be a bonus track on Helix: The Best Of 1983-2012, along with another new track ‘Axe to Grind’. Last, but not least, the song will be available for digital download sales.

I won’t be announcing the actual name of the song until August, and then fans will still have to wait another four or five weeks to hear it and see the video. All I can tell everyone is that it’s a hockey song-any more hints or clues than that and I think I’d give it away.

Over the past several weeks Brent has been putting together the video. By next week it will be finished. The song will come out the first week of the 2012-2012 NHL hockey season to radio by DMDS, the digital service that sends the single to the radio stations. At the same time we will be releasing the video on all the social networking sites, with the help of our new publicist Torrie DePapp. Torrie is also helping to work radio and the print media. A great addition to the Helix team.”

Tentative songs for the Helix: The Best Of 1983-2012 CD:

‘Danger Zone’
‘Running Wild In The 21St Century’
‘Give It To You’
‘Jaws Of The Tiger’
‘Deep Cuts The Knife’

We’re keeping the name of the song under wraps for the time present, but as we get into the later part of the summer I’ll let everyone know what it is. Last Friday I was at Brent’s (Doerner) place in Kitchener and we were working on the video and it was looking good. The game plan is to have the song go to radio the first week of September and the video to be released on Facebook/MySpace/YouTube and Planet Helix at the same time. At the end of the video will be the Christmas tour dates plus a link to the Heavy Mental Christmas website where fans will be able to buy tickets online. I’m very excited about this and everyone who has heard the song thinks it’s going to get lots of airplay/video play. We’ll see…”

HELIX – vocalist Brian Vollmer

BRIAN VOLLMER

INTERVIEW AND LIVE PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

Helix are a Canadian hard rock/heavy metal band formed in Ontario in 1974. The band are best known for their early 80’s albums NO REST FOR THE WICKED, WALKIN’ THE RAZOR’S EDGE and LONG WAY TO HEAVEN which was a chart topping album in Sweden in 1985. Their most known lineup was the 80s version of the band: Vollmer on vocals, accompanied by guitarists Brent Doerner and Paul Hackman, bassist Daryl Gray, and drummer Greg “Fritz” Hinz. The history of the band has been marked by many lineup changes, with Vollmer being the sole constant member and only remaining member of the original lineup. Although guitarist Paul Hackman was tragically killed in a tour van accident in 1992, the surviving members of the 80’s lineup reunited in 2009 for the album VAGABOND BONES. The line-up is now completed by young guitarist Kaleb Duck and the band released its latest EP SKIN IN THE GAME in the fall of 2011. In October 2011 Helix finally returned to Finland after a near 26 year absence and played a show at the Legends of Rock festival in Oulu. There we had the honor to sit down with Mr. Vollmer himself and hear some of the latest news as well as some blasts from the past… Read on!

SAGA – Live at Club Virgin Oil Co, Helsinki

November 11th, 2011

REVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

Progressive rock band Saga has awarded with gold and platinum albums and they have sold over eight million albums during their 30 year plus career but they’re still like a “big unknown” in Finland. The band has never performed here before and especially now, with the original lead singer Michael Sadler is back in fold, it was finally time to witness band to perform its debut show in here. It was pleasant to see that although Saga are not as known as their Canadian colleagues Rush they still virtually sold out show in Club Virgin Oil in Helsinki in front  of approximately 500 fans whose long wait was now finally over.

Legends Of Rock II festival featuring TNT, Helix, Treat

LEGENDS OF ROCK II

8′TH OF OCTOBER 2011

CLUB TEATRIA, OULU

REVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

The Legends of Rock festival was now organized for the second time in Oulu, Finland. The festivals organizers believe strongly in the name of 80’s hard rock and metal and this year’s edition of the festival included a string of interesting bands which haven’t been performing in Finland for ages…if ever. Canadian band Helix was headlining the event. It’s been 26 years since their last visit so it was finally about time to see them again here. Although Norwegian TNT and Swedish Treat are located in our neighbor countries, still, neither of them played in Finland until now. Originally it was announced that German band Bonfire was also on the bill but for some reason or another they cancelled and were now replaced by local act called Ghost Machinery. It must have a little disappointment for the organizers that only approximately 300 people breezed in for the evening. Perhaps it was such a high ticket price or an oversupply of concerts in Finland, but still I was waiting for more people to show up.  Anyway, there were no cancellations and all the bands were performing as announced. It was time to check out the today’s condition of the 80’s veterans…

New HELIX Disc Mastered

September 7th, 2011

Our new 5 song EP is now mastered and ready to go to the pressing planet next week. The only holdup right now is the artwork, but we’re still on schedule to have this disc ready for release before we leave for Europe, possibly before we go west at the end of September. There are now two new dates that have been added to our calendar. One is Winnipeg on October 1st and the other is in our hometown of London, Ontario on November 18th. In regards to the Winnipeg date, Bernie Aubin (our agent) is trying to roll in a couple of more dates, so stay tuned.

As soon as Skin in the Game is released we’re going to be asking fans for feedback as to what song they think should be the first track to radio. The order of the songs are as follows:

• WILLIAM TELL OVERTURE
• SKIN IN THE GAME
• THE BITCH IS A BULLET
• ANGELINA
• CHAMPAGNE COMMUNIST

Lyrics are posted on the Planet Helix website.

New HELIX EP To Be Released Next Month

August 22nd, 2011
HELIX

HELIX

Next month we’ll be releasing “SKIN IN THE GAME”, our new 5 song EP. Songs on the disc include:

The William Tell Overture
Skin in the Game
The Bitch is a Bullet
Angelina
Champagne Communist

The CD is being mixed by Aaron Murray and being mastered at Carvello Mastering in Toronto. Artwork is once again being done by Babyjack Design, the same people who did the Vagabond Bones and Smash Hits Unplugged cover.

This time around we’ll be immediately putting up the songs for digital download. As well, we’ll be initiating a website where fans with a special code (which you will purchase from us) will be able to buy different packages of ring tones, video, band member tips, etc. I’m thinking that this is where we will test market the reality show.

Regarding the new material, HELIX frontman Brian Vollmer said, “I wrote [the first] four songs with Sean Kelly. One (‘Angelina’) was also a co-write with Moe Berg. Sean has been my partner on the last couple of HELIX discs — ‘Vagabond Bones’ and ‘Smash Hits Unplugged’ — as well as being a large part of the acoustic show.

“These four songs (‘Champagne Communist’, ‘Angelina’, ‘Skin In The Game’, and ‘The Bitch Is A Bullet’) are really just a continuation of the ‘Vagabond Bones’ CD. We wrote them very shortly after that CD was finished and they’ve been sitting in the can for a year.”

Anvil and Helix confirmed for the Sweden Rock Cruise, October 6-7

July 2nd, 2011

The Canadian bands Anvil (who were forced to cancel their appearence at the cruise in April this year) and Helix, reunited with all now living members of their classic line-up, are both confirmed to appear at the Sweden Rock Cruise. The ship Tallink Silja Galaxy departs from Stockholm, Sweden on October 6th and makes a round trip to Turku, Finland to return to Stockholm 23 hours later.

Four more bands are to be booked and we hope to present their names soon.

Testament cancelled

Testament whom we earlier announced, have unfortunately announced that they are cancelling their entire European tour, which includes the show at the Sweden Rock Cruise. We are working on finding a replacement and hope to present one soon.

Anvil (Can)

Anvil1.gif

It took Canada’s Anvil 30 years to become an overnight sensation. The documentary “Anvil! The story of Anvil” was one of the most talked-about phenomena of 2009, not only among metalheads. Anvil were best known for “Metal on metal” (1982) and “Forged in fire” (1983), two classic heavy metal albums influential to the likes of Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax. Then their career stalled and for many years the band was all but forgotten. Yet the optimism of dynamic duo Steve “Lips” Kudlow (vocals/guitar) and Robb Reiner (drums) never faltered, which made a huge impression on those who watched and loved the documentary. Triggered by the renewed public interest, Anvil have released their best album since their halcyon days, “Juggernaut of justice”. As a live act, they have nothing left to prove – the only difference is that more people than ever come to the shows.

Helix (Can)

Helix1.gif

In the mid 80s, Helix were one of the most popular hard-rock acts in Sweden. These Canucks’ biggest hit “Rock you”, from 1984, remains a singalong anthem at heavy metal-parties nationwide. Contrary to popular belief these days, Helix was no one-hit wonder. Songs like “Gimme gimme good lovin”, “Heavy metal love” and “Deep cuts the knife” also bear the name of classics – the latter is found on an album that made #1 in Sweden, namely “Long way to heaven” (1985). The last time Helix took the stage in Sweden was at Sweden Rock Festival in 2005. This time it’s even more special. There has been a reunion of Helix classic lineup: Brian Vollmer (vocals), Brent Doerner (guitar), Daryl Gray (bass), Greg “Fritz” Hinz (drums), plus Kaleb Duck (guitar) in lieu of the late great Paul Hackman. You will hear the both raunchy and melodic hard rock of Helix presented in exactly the proper fashion – prepare to get floored by a true 80s knuckle sandwich.

HELIX Sign with EMI

November 15th, 2010

WE SIGN LICENSING DEAL FOR CANADA WITH E.M.I. FOR
“SMASH HITS UNPLUGGED”

This week we returned to the E.M.I. fold by signing a licensing deal with Canada E.M.I. for “Smash Hits Unplugged”. E.M.I. won’t be releasing the CD until January, but in the meantime I’m allowed to sell the units I have at live gigs, on Ebay, and through Planet Helix. Last night at Molly Blooms we sold 20 units and at the release party today at Planet Helix I’m sure we’ll go through a whack as well. We’ll also be releasing two songs to radio in January: That Day is Gonna Come to rock radio and Dream On to Hot AC. For any of you that pick up the CD please let me know what you think the first single should be. Email me at bvollm0656@rogers.com

MOLLY BLOOMS SOLD OUT
Last night’s show at Molly Blooms was once again sold out and the club was packed to the rafters. Thanks to all of you who made it out for the show. Also Gary Kelly for having us.

BARRACUDA PRETTY THIS THURSDAY
We’re in St. Catherines (Daryl’s hometown) this upcoming Thursday, November 18th at Barracuda Pretty. This is a HTZ presents and we’ll be going into the studio in the afternoon to play a couple of songs acoustically as well as going to supper with the station’s contest winner. HTZ will be giving out 20 station shirts plus 20 “Smash Hits Unplugged” to other contest winners as well. Should be a fun night. If you live in the Niagara region we hope that you can make it out to the show.

VAGABOND BONES REALITY SHOW

Throughout all these gigs we’ve been busy filming for the pilot for our reality show “Vagabond Bones” with Pat Portelance, Mike Valenza (sound), and Thane Silliker. I felt kinda sorry for all three of them last night at Mollys as they were getting knocked around in the crowd. Definitely guerilla filming! Mike and Pat will be coming out west with us for our three day stint at the end of the month and then in December we’ll start editing everything down. It’s a long process and we’re working on a shoestring budget, but ya gotta walk the walk if you’re gonna talk the talk. As well as the live gigs Pat has also been filming me while I go about my “daily” routine, which is about as un-routine as you can get. The other night, for instance, the Trailer Park Boys were in town at Centennial Hall and Rob Wells phoned me up and asked me not only to the show, but also to come over to their tour bus before the show to say hello. Lynda, Pat, and I showed up with Helix hoodies for all of them (Jean Paul wore his onstage when he came out at the end!) and Pat got some good stuff in the dressing room. Of all people who know about “guerilla filming” and trying to get someone to pick up the show, it’s them. It was their low budget film at the Atlantic film festival many years ago that got them their deal with Showcase and led to one of the most popular series on Canadian TV. Even though the show has now finished production, ironically it’s finally taken off in England and the U.S. Rob told me the dates they’ve just finished in England saw fans lining up 2 hours before showtime. Ditto for the States.

Pat also filmed me last week when I was interviewed at Rogers TV for a show they have about people over 55 and what their retirement plans are (if any). They’ve asked me to be their “poster boy” (which ties right in with the whole vibe of Vagabond Bones), to which a quickly accepted. They’re sending over a photographer to the house tomorrow to shoot me and I’m also going on-air in the morning to talk about my teaching and the new CD. As well, I also did an interview this week with CBC radio:

FACEBOOK SNIPING

Last week I made a comment in the Sunday Update about Dick Wendling being a “dick”. I had the usual suspects snipe at me on Facebook-Jason Jansenkovich the main one. At first I was going to write a little “expose” on why I was so upset and also about the people attackilng me, but during the week something changed my mind. It was a dinner I had with my old friend John Ball, whom I greatly admire.

John is a very successful businessman whom I’ve known for years. We had planned some weeks ago to get together for a meal. When we went out for lunch the talk turned to the psychological aspects of success and failure (John is worth several million dollars) and also our spiritual outlook on life and how that has affected it as well. John is a person who speaks no ill of anyone, although there are probably plenty of people who he’s had bad run-ins with in his life. We discussed how talking about people and running them down was just negative energy, and so, with that in mind, I decided to refrain from getting into plastering my grievances with the aforementioned individuals all over The Sunday Update. I decided to let my reputation speak for itself instead. Those that know me personally know how I conduct my affairs & life. Those that know the people cutting me up on Facebook know how they conduct their lives as well. Thanks to all of you who came to my defense on Facebook.

Having said that however, I would still like to make a comment about London radio, as a few people on Facebook were trying to insinuate that Helix not getting airplay was nothing but “sour grapes” on my part. Consider these facts:

1.Helix is from London
2.Helix is one of the few “international” acts to come out of London.
3.Helix has sold out the last four times we’ve played London.
4.We received airplay on Bruce Dickenson’s Friday Night Radio show, Dee Snider’s House of Hair, The Boneyard (Sirus Radio), and heavy rotation on KOOL FM (Kitchener), Q104 (Halifax), and The Fox (Fredericton) as well as getting airplay right across Canada on other stations like Krock in Kingston, C103 in Moncton, Free FM in Grand Prairie, HTZ FM in St. Catherines, and The Eagle in Sarnia. “Make ‘em Dance” went to Number 31 on the Active Rock Charts (the chart most Canadian radio stations follow). Even stations that didn’t add us to their playlist had us in for an interview or did phone interviews with us (especially if the gig we were playing was being advertised on that station). In the next 5 dates we’re playing before the end of November for instance, all of the stations in those markets have interviewed the band or given us airplay.
5.Our last CD “Vagabond Bones” has also gotten airplay around the world in England, The Netherlands, and France.

BUT STILL NO RADIO SUPPORT IN OUR HOMETOWN OF LONDON, ONTARIO. WTF?

Our position is this: It’s London radio’s right not to play us, although we can’t figure out why they won’t even give us a chance. Can you? It’s OUR right to point out to London listeners what we consider an injustice. All we’re asking for is a chance, but it’s pretty hard for any of the London listening audience to have an opinion one way or the other on the song if they won’t even feature it. ‘Nuff said.

HELIX Filming Reality Show; Smash Hits Unplugged Audio Samples Available

November 7th, 2010
Helix - unplugged

Helix - unplugged

HELIX mainman Brian Vollmer has issued the following update:

“Cameraman Pat Portelance has been following me around a lot lately, as we’re filming for the pilot for our reality show Vagabond Bones. I’m really excited as to where this could lead if we get a network to carry it. I know what you’re thinking-not another reality show! I really think our story is unique however. A clear distinction between us and the other shows out there is the personalities in the band. That’s always been our strongest point and one that we plan on focusing on when we film. Pat is going to spend a day with everyone at their homes to capture the ‘essence’ of what we’re all about, as well as the shows we have coming up, including our four date/three-day stint in Alberta at the end of November. We plan on getting the behind the scenes ‘stuff’ that’s involved with putting dates together. Unlike the American reality shows which focus on lavish lifestyles, ours is a blue collar story of a Canadian band traveling the vast expanses of the country. Along the way we’ll visit old haunts, interview and talk to fellow Canadian musicians, and dispense some of the wisdom that hopefully we’ve learned over the years. I said hopefully…LOL. Just the fact that we’re touring across Canada will give the show an entirely different look.”

Helix’ new acoustic album, Smash Hits Unplugged, will be released before the end of the year.

Smash Hits Unplugged tracklisting:

‘Rock You’
‘Heavy Metal Love’
‘Gimme Gimme Good Lovin’’
‘Make Me Do (Anything You Want)’
‘Wild In The Streets’/’No Rest For The Wicked’
‘Deep Cuts The Knife’
‘The Kids Are All Shakin’’
‘Dream On’
‘That Day Is Gonna Come’
‘Dream On’
‘Good To The Last Drop’

Check out audio samples of ‘Gimme Gimme Good Lovin’’, ‘The Kids Are All Shakin’’ and ‘That Day Is Gonna Come’ at
