The Tuska Open Air Festival has carved its name as one of the most important metal festivals amongst all other metal festivals in Europe. The media, label staff and PR -people travel all over the world to attend and feel and see the metal culture in Finland. All in all, 28,000 metal maniacs made a visit to a sold-out Tuska during three days. That’s excellent, as Tuska will be turning 20-years old next year, therefore it can be expected we’ll see something really unique as well as some bigger bands in 2017.
The line-up of the festival was mostly ignored the normal radio friendly audience whereas the die-hard metal freaks arrived at the Tuska Open Air Festival. Ghost, Avantasia, the domestic metal export Children Of Bodom and a number of other interesting names, like old thrash metal veterans Testament and Anthrax had to be witnessed of course. The Finnish Metal-Rules.com team was present the whole time and managed to catch several interesting bands during the 3 long days of pure metal madness.

Few bands have had a rougher go of it than Megadeth the last few years. In 2014, band leader Dave Mustaine had to undergo neck surgery a second time, cancelling their participation in the inaugural Motorboat cruise. Then longtime band members Chris Broderick (guitars) and Shawn Drover (drums) left Megadeth, citing creative differences. The band didn’t tour for a long time, but I just knew wily ol’ Dave had something good up his sleeve. Never, ever, count Megadeth out! Dave’s response to these challenges was to recruit Lamb of God’s drumming powerhouse Chris Adler and Brazilian shredder Kiko Loureiro from Angra and then record the band’s best album in years, DYSTOPIA! Only a killer bill would be fitting for the tour, so we get crossover thrash legends Suicidal Tendencies (with fucking Dave Lombardo on drums!), melodic death metallers Children of Bodom, and young in age but old in style thrashers Havok! Are you metalheads salivating yet or what? Tonight we are in Bethlehem PA, a former steel town that generated most of the steel used for the US ships during WWII. Let’s get Bethlehem cranking out some metal again! SET THE WORLD AFIRE! BRING IT!

Sunday, March 6th was a semi-historical occasion in the Calgary Metal scene. It was the first time that a Metal concert was hosted in the Grey Eagle Casino, a beautiful new venue in Calgary. Sure Queensrcyhe had played the GEC a couple months before but the small seated crowd of 500 older fans but that gig was almost a warm-up for the crowd and style of show as the sold out Megadeth tour. There were so many unanswered questions…would the layout be seats or standing area? Would it be loud enough? How would the line-up’s be? Could security handle the crowd? And most importantly…would there be enough beer?! I’m pleased to say the GEC met all expectations as it was a great, safe show and it seemed that all the 2700 or so people had a great time.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, HAVOK is forced to cancel select dates on their current North American tour. David Sanchez (guitars/vocals) comments: “Due to injury, we have been forced to cancel a few shows on our current tour with CROWBAR, REVOCATON, FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY, and ARMED FOR APOCALYPSE. We plan to rejoin the tour in California in early October.
While hiking in Boulder, Colorado, I took a pretty nasty fall and ended up shattering my left wrist. Since I’m currently unable to play guitar, our friend Dan Gargiulo from REVOCATION has offered his 6-string services and will be laying down the riffage for the rest of our stint in the USA. I will still be doing vocals on the remainder of the upcoming shows and I cannot wait to get back on the road!
I’d like to apologize to anyone that was looking forward to seeing HAVOK in these coming days. We will definitely make it up to you. In times like these, one must remember the ancient American proverb, ‘Shit happens.’ See you on the road!!
One last thing! Here is some good news for a change. Pete’s mom is making a full recovery from her recent accident and that means Pete Webber will be back behind the kit rejoining the tour in California. We want to thank Marshall Wieczorek from WRETCHED for stepping in on drums and doing an awesome job on such short notice.”

When it was announced that Denver’s Thrash Metal four-piece Havok will be hitting the road across Europe and stopping by to play a gig at one of London’s most underground venues, it was clear that it won’t be a show to miss.
Despite the fact that 25th of November was a rather cold and grim Monday night in London, a decent amount of heavy metal fans had made their way down to The Underworld in Camden Town ready to drink beer and party like it’s Friday night.
Scheduled to play alongside Havok were London’s Savage Messiah and Spanish Angelus Apatrida making it a killer thrash metal line-up to cure any of our Monday blues.
Colorado thrashers Havok made a stop at the Whisky a Go Go during their North American headlining tour in support of their new album, Unnatural Selection. Before the show, I had a chance to talk with lead guitarist Reece Scruggs about the album, the tour, and Havok’s musical influences.

It’s always great to be at the Whisky a Go Go on a Friday night. While standing in line to get in, or grabbing a pre-show slice of pie from Frankie and Johnnie’s pizza up the block, you really get to experience all the weirdness that the Sunset Strip has to offer. There’s a yuppie-or-something club nearby (do people still say “yuppie”? I do…), an Irish pub which I have yet to check out, the Hustler store across the street, and average LA joes taking their Lamborghinis for a casual cruise back and forth on Sunset a few times, or walking their large, exotic dogs haughtily down the Strip. And lest we forget the constant stream of tourist buses slowing down to take pictures of the Whisky, as well as flash devil-horns (as if they even know what they’re doing) at the string of less-than-impressed metal fans who are just waiting to pick up their tickets at will-call. The “Unnatural Selection” European tour is due to kick off on November 23rd in Edegem, Belgium, shortly after SAVAGE MESSIAH’s headlining UK mini tour. The European trek also features support from ANGELUS APATRIDA.
SAVAGE MESSIAH guitarist JOFF BAILEY comments:
“We’re really excited to announce the news that we’ll be hitting the road across Europe this November/December with Havok! We really can’t wait to hit European shores again and tear it up with all the Savages over there! We’ve been shut away in the studio all summer working on the new record (which is sounding absolutely brutal by the way!) so when they finally let us loose for our headline tour in October and now across Europe a couple of weeks later with Havok, well, needless to say, we’ll burst out fuckin’ swinging! I may even put in place a strict diet of Maiden, Metallica and Rocky montage scenes to fire us up even more! See you on the road! STAY SAVAGE!!”
Candlelight Records has premiered a special pre-release lyric video for HAVOK‘s latest single, “Give Me Liberty… Or Give Me Death,” taken from their forthcoming new album Unnatural Selection. The video is available now at the label’s official Facebook page.
Fans of Denver thrashers HAVOK are beginning to feel the growing excitement for the approaching North American release date of the band’s third full-length, Unnatural Selection. The album’s lead single, “Give Me Liberty… Or Give Me Death,” impacted metal radio earlier this week; the only single to land on CMJ’s Loud Rock “Most Added” report. Sirius/XM Radio plus Syracuse’s WAQX, Baltimore’s WIYY, and Northern New Jersey metal powerhouse WSOU, among others, are a few of the key early supporters of the single.
To celebrate, Candlelight Records today makes “Give Me Liberty…Or Give Me Death” available as a free download at the label’s official Bandcamp page. The topical thrash anthem delivers the young band’s classic thrash and old-school metal sound.

On Monday, the 13th of May, extreme death metal band Suffocation paid a visit to London’s O2 Academy Islington to cause some rather brutal debauchery. What they brought along was three exciting bands – Cephalic Carnage, Havok and Fallujah. We had the privilege to be there and experience it all ourselves, because what can possibly seem like a better idea than a death metal gig to brighten up your Monday night? Exactly. Absolutely nothing! Read the rest of this entry »
Denver thrashers HAVOK today announce their first headlining tour of North America. Dates are set to commence July 22 and will see the band journey through the southern states, travelling up the eastern seaboard before making their debut performance at Montreal’s annual Heavy MTL festival on August 11. The tour will be in support of their forthcoming new album, Unnatural Selection, set for release June 25.
Reported last week, Unnatural Selection, the band’s third full-length album for Candlelight Records, was produced by guitarist David Sanchez and mixed by Terry Date (Pantera, Overkill, Deftones). The album features original artwork from Polish illustrator Rafal Wechterowicz (Slayer, Mastodon) and was mastered by James Murphy (Aborted, World Under Blood, Abigail Williams). Lead single, “Give Me Liberty… Or Give Me Death,” is set to impact Loud Rock/Metal Radio May 27. The topical thrash anthem delivers the young band’s classic thrash and old school metal sound.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Candlelight Records confirms June 25 as the North American release date for Unnatural Selection, the new album from Denver thrashers HAVOK. The ten-song album was produced by David Sanchez with mixing handled by Terry Date (Pantera, Overkill, Deftones). It features original artwork from Polish illustrator Rafal Wechterowicz (Slayer, Mastodon) and was mastered by James Murphy (Aborted, World Under Blood, Abigail Williams).
“Give Me Liberty… Or Give Me Death,” the first single from Unnatural Selection, will hit Loud Rock/Metal radio on May 27. The topical song is a furious and urgent anthem that displays the band’s classic thrash and old school metal sound. Vocalist/guitarist David Sanchez ignites the fret board and barks the righteous lyrics while drummer Pete Webber punishes his immense kit. The song’s towering sound benefits from the unique acoustics of the old theater that was utilized as one of the many recording locations for the album.
“I am super pumped on how the drums came out,” chimes Webber. “We recorded the drums in a theater to get a huge sound. It was a challenging experience for me between time constraints and the drum parts having much more feeling in them. I believe the added pressure made for some really awesome stuff. I can’t wait to unleash this album to the world.”
Unnatural Selection bears a far more mature collection of songs when compared to Burn (2009), and Time Is Up (2011). HAVOK has truly hit their mark with a sound that will please fans new and old. Additional album stand outs include album opener “I Am The State,” “Chasing The Edge,” and the band’s rendition of the Black Sabbath classic “Children of the Grave.”
It’s a warm Sunday evening as a horde of metal heads descend upon the underworld for what looks like one of the thrashiest line-ups the venue has seen for a while, within minutes of opening the merchandise tables are mobbed and it certainly bodes well for a heavy evening of metal filled goodness.
