GWAR Announces Co-Headline Tour Dates With Hatebreed

June 12th, 2013

Intergalactic mutants GWAR and hardcore metal heavyweights Hatebreed are co-headlining a short run of gigs in September. GWAR has also confirmed a new festival date, appearing at Chicago’s “Riot Fest” for the second year in a row. Joining the fun will be Richmond, VA’s Iron Reagan, featuring members of Municipal Waste and Cannabis Corpse.

GWAR is gearing up for the 4th Annual GWAR-B-Q (Tickets Are On Sale Now) and the release of a new album in the early fall. Razor and Tie recording artists Hatebreed will be continuing their support of their newest release, “The Divinity of Purpose.”

Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta had this to say about the upcoming mini-tour:
“We’re extremely happy to finally hook up some GWAR/Hatebreed dates after years of trying to get our schedules to connect! We’ll have spent this entire summer rocking stages in Europe so it will be great to get back to the good ole USA, to get down & dirty in the clubs with our favorite mutants from Antarctica. These gigs are not to be missed!”

GWAR front-thing Oderus made a simpler comment. GWAR and Hatebreed together is really gonna fuck some people up.”

Slave Pit “GWARtist” Announces Print Line; Collectable Brockie Art For Sale

April 1st, 2013

The man behind the mask of Oderus Urungus, Dave Brockie, today unveiled a new web-store where fans can buy limited-edition, high quality art prints of not only Brockie’s GWAR drawings, but many of his other illustrations. Culled from select images spanning a 30-year career as an artist and illustrator, these highly-collectable prints are now available to the public. Check out www.theartofdavebrockie.com

“For years I have been doing custom paintings and drawings for people and I have gotten so far behind that I constantly have to turn down people looking to get some of my work. A high-quality print line web store will give everybody a chance to have a Brockie on their wall.” said the artist from GWAR‘s “Slave Pit”, their Richmond studio.

Dave Brockie is to many a footnote to the name most people know him by–that of Oderus Urungus, foul-mouthed alien barbarian and longtime lead singer of GWAR, the world’s foremost horror-rock spectacle. GWAR‘s legendary live shows and relentless work-ethic have earned the group of artists and musicians from Richmond, Va. an international reputation as the cutting-edge of outrageous, “Grand Guignol”-style metal theater, and won them legions of fans worldwide. In the course of the groups 25+ year-long career Brockie, as President of Slave Pit Inc., GWAR‘s parent production company, has consistently spearheaded the group’s efforts, not only as the bands lead singer and public mouthpiece, but also as an artist involved in many of GWAR‘s graphic projects.

Brockie continued on like the blowhard that he is. “I actually graduated art school even though I knew it was no guarantee of employment. Nevertheless I deluded myself that I was going to become a fine artist and was painting these giant squiggly blob paintings that actually looked pretty cool, but were never going to pay the bills. I worked construction and knocked over liquor stores to do that. But I was also into comics and illustration and when GWAR started to happen it gave me a great venue for my work. Suddenly I was being called upon to do flyers, t-shirts, comics…even album covers. That turned into a 25+ year stretch where I was always making art of some kind. It’s about damn time I had my own print line!”

The prints are signed and numbered by the artist and are part of a limited edition of 1000 per image. The prints use the highest quality paper and inks, and are mounted on a piece of masonite that features a custom-made 3-D frame that is a throwback to Brockie’s early “squiggle” paintings.

“I hope this is a big success,” said Brockie. “I am going on a pilgrimage to Stalingrad this spring and need money for booze and food. Plus I got kicked in the mouth by a circus-mule and need extensive dental-work. “After I get this print site going, I plan to disappear.  It is time for GWAR.

In other Slave Pit news GWAR is wrapping up a new album, their 13th, which is the band’s first since the passing of longtime guitarist Cory Smoot in late 2011. Coming out later this year, the album features the debut of Pustulus Maximus, cousin of the mighty departed one, Flattus Maximus. The band has a run of shows scheduled for this April, which are the last stops of the “Fate or Chaos” tour, which chronicles GWAR‘s epic struggle with an angry God. It has been rumored that GWAR will be testing out songs from the new album on these dates.

“Yes! We Will!” confirmed Oderus.

The band is also venturing into the culinary arts with a signature “GWAR-B-Q” sauce, which they will be debuting at a colossal “Meat & Meet” to be held at the world famous “Grinders” in Kansas City on Monday April 8th from 4-6 PM.

August will see the fourth annual GWAR-B-Q, the group’s annual outdoor music and meat-fest which is getting more massive every year. The new album’s release follows soon after, and then the band will embark on a mega-huge world tour that will continue well into 2014. Sounds like business as usual for the hardest working band in show biz.

GWAR Announces Second Leg of “Fate or Chaos” Tour

February 14th, 2013

After spending months deep inside their arctic fortress working on what will be their next album, your Lords and Masters GWAR have announced their return to the road in North America. The second leg of the “Fate or Chaos” tour is scheduled to kick off April 10th in Tucson, AZ and will run through April 25th in Jacksonville, Florida. Support on the tour will come from Warbeast and Wilson. Tickets go on sale this Friday February 15th.

Briefly putting down the crack pipe, lead throat thing Oderus Urungus spoke about going back on tour:
“As you humans amuse yourself with your mundane holidays, it has been a time of intense activity for GWAR, as we record our 13th studio album– the first one with our new Scumdog brother, Pustulus Maximus!”

The Filth-Lord continued– “We begin this year’s festivities with the second and final leg of our Fate or Chaos tour, so everybody who missed the first leg can see Cyber-Jesus get his fucking ass handed to him. Then it’s back in the studio to work on all the hulking war machines we shall need on our devastating, brand-spanking new tour, after the album drops at the end of the summer! Can you believe I said drop? How fucking stupid!”

Oderus Urungus and Balsac the Jaws of Death, recently took New York by storm when they were in town filming a segment for the SyFy TV Show “Oddities”.

The guys were once again recruited by MTV’s Next Movie to give their critique of another Steven Spielberg directed, Oscar nominated film. The last time they reviewed a movie for Next Movie they reviewed “War Horse” it was only fitting that “Lincoln” be next. Check out Oderus and Balsac’s review HERE.

Oderus and Balsac recently stole the show .as guests on the “Artie Lange Show”. Check out highlights of their appearance HERE.

The summer will also herald the fourth annual GWAR-B-Q, and this year is shaping-up to have the most colossal, bone-crushing line-up yet! But that’s not all from your toxic mutant under-lords. Rumors of boxed sets, GWAR-B-Q sauce, GWAR beer, and long-awaited “comedy” albums abound. Further details about all of these projects would have to wait until “we get our shit together”, said Oderus.

GWAR Announces “Fate or Chaos” 2012 Fall Tour

July 25th, 2012

Intergalactic Mutant Overlords GWAR, are plotting their return to the road this fall. Taking a break from working on their new album as well as an extended arctic slumber, GWAR is back with an entirely new show. Your lords and masters will be wreaking havoc across North America, with support coming from DevilDriver, Cancer Bats and Legacy of Disorder. The tour is currently scheduled to kick off October 12th in Philadelphia, PA and run through November 26th in Millvale, PA. More dates are expected to be added in the coming weeks. Tickets go on sale this Friday July 27th and Saturday July 28th.

When asked for comment on the upcoming tour, GWAR front-thing Oderus Urungus muttered something incoherent, then when prodded a bit more muttered something else incoherent. After the third attempt for comment something more intelligible came from the mouth of the warty one:

Said Lord Oderus, “Once again GWAR returns, hoof and nail, to our old stomping grounds, North America, on a tour of utter destruction, and this time nothing less than the greatest power in the universe will do as our primary victim! That’s right, this time GWAR, fresh from our battle with Death, takes on another of history’s biggest assholes…God himself! Seeing as we don’t have the new album done yet, we really had to do something spectacular…”

Oderus belched out a midget and continued: “This tour will also see the arrival of a new Scumdog brother to aid GWAR in our quest to destroy everything that sucks. That’s right, I can finally reveal certain details regarding our new album…ever since our missing band mate Flattus Maximus took his leave of Earth, members of the Maximus tribe have been showing up at our Antarctic fortress, not only to pay their respects but also eat all of our food. And also lay tracks on the new album! You see, every member of the Maximus family rips on guitar (though Flattus taught them all they know), and they were anxious to help us fill the void left by Flattus. We have been working with his brothers Pustulus, Infecticus, Bubonus and even the shunned Corpulus…and right now they are fighting it out as to which one of them will stay here with the mighty GWAR for the “FATE OR CHAOS” Tour…and beyond! Get ready world, this fall shall see the birth of a new Scumdog!”

Canada’s Cancer Bats has spent the last three months touring the world in support of their latest album, Dead Set On Living. This tour will follow US dates with Demon Hunter and Bleeding Through, which can be seen on the band’s facebook page HERE. The reaction to Dead Set On Living across the globe has been overwhelmingly positive. About.com claims that “With positivity this ugly, it’s hard not to find something to love”, while the UK’s Metal Hammer gives the album a 9/10; “It’s heavy, it’s catchy, it’s relentlessly brilliant and, above all else, it’s still quite unlike anything else you’re likely to hear this year”. Fans can pick up Dead Set On Living directly from metalblade.com, as well as on iTunes, Amazon, and at local record stores.

THE CORY SMOOT EXPERIMENT – New Song Streaming

May 22nd, 2012

Available June 5th – All Proceeds To Benefit Smoot Family Fund

THE CORY SMOOT EXPERIMENT was recorded in 2010 at CORY’s Karma Studios, where GWAR, Municipal Waste, and many others have laid down tracks. The songs were originally meant for a concept album called “Religion is Fiction”. CORY was going to lay down all the tracks and then get some of his favorite singers from the internationally-acclaimed Richmond metal scene to do the vocals, including GWAR lead singer Dave Brockie and Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe. Unfortunately this didn’t happen due to scheduling problems but that didn’t mean the end of the project. CORY went ahead and recorded the vocals himself and re-named the project THE CORY SMOOT EXPERIMENT, completing the entire package just before his final tour with GWAR in the fall of 2011.

Today GuitarWorld.com the online home of Guitar World Magazine is hosting an exclusive premiere of a track from When Worlds Collide. Get a first listen to the song “Mutilated” HERE.

After his passing, GWAR and Metal Blade set up the Smoot Family Fund to help provide for Cory’s family. All proceeds from this album will be donated to this fund.

Metal Blade Records Chairman and CEO Brian Slagel commented on the album’s release:

“Metal Blade Records is donating all the proceeds of the Cory Smoot solo album to the Smoot family. Please help us by getting the CD and enjoying the immense talent he was.”

Dave Brockie, a.k.a. Odrus Urungus, lead singer of GWAR shared his memories of CORY.

CORY SMOOT is one of the great unsung heroes of metal. His musical abilities transformed GWAR from a splatter-thrash phenomena into a top metal act. And though he may have left us way too early, he left us a lifetime of music to listen to. He tore it up like few others, and will always be remembered as the true Flattus Maximus. We really loved the man, and there is not a day that goes by or a GWAR show that is played where he is not sorely missed”

When Worlds Collide Track Listing
1. The Blood Red
2. Fortunate Son
3. Religion is Fiction
4. Rebirth
5. Brainfade
6. Mandatory Purgatory
7. Countdown to Oblivion
8. The Gauntlet

LEGACY OF DISORDER TEAM UP WITH GWAR FOR U.S. TOUR

January 28th, 2012

Legacy of Disorder has just unleashed a simply kick-ass sophomore release, ‘Last Man Standing,’ and will soon be taking it to the streets, as they unite with veteran gore metallists Gwar for a full U.S. tour.

“Legacy Of Disorder are chomping at the bit to get this U.S. tour with headliners Gwar underway,” says LoD lead guitarist, Rana Freilich. “We are fully stoked and excited to be included and part of such a cool U.S. tour with such an established band as Gwar Legacy of Disorder is comprised of singer James Robinson, bassist Jason Keill, and drummer Matt Thompson and guitarist Rana Freilich.

With such Hard-hitting standout tracks on the album as  ‘Break,’ ‘March to Death’ and the title tune ‘Last Man Standing’, Legacy Of Disorder is certainly starting to hit its metallic stride. ‘Last Man Standing’ was engineered, mixed and co/produced by Sterling Winfield (who is best known to the metal masses for his work with Pantera) and mastered by Maor Appelbaum (Sepultura, Halford)

Legacy of Disorder is one ferocious live beast when they hit the stage, so it is only fitting that the quartet will be paired with one of the most over-the-top and outrageous live shows out there. “Being part of this tour will really give us a chance to get our music heard in the U.S.,” adds Freilich. “We can’t wait to hit the U.S. to throwdown with Gwar throughout North America!”

Coroner confirms GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot’s cause of death

December 8th, 2011
Flattus Maximus

Flattus Maximus of GWAR

The Smoot family and Slave Pit Inc. released a statement regarding the official cause of death of guitarist Cory Smoot. Cory had played the character of Flattus Maximus for over ten years, and was discovered dead on the band’s tour bus on Nov. 3rd of this year. He was 34.

Stated North Dakota coroner William Masselo, MD:
“We have finalized the autopsy report and death certificate. I have determined that Cory died from a coronary artery thrombosis brought about by his pre-existing coronary artery disease.”

The band, which will continue as a four-piece until the current tour schedule is complete, has officially retired the character of Flattus Maximus, and has announced no plans regarding a new GWAR-tarist.

Metal Blade and GWAR have since set-up the Smoot Family Foundation to raise funds for Cory’s wife, Jaime, and their unborn child. Donations can be made HERE. Also, at The Canal Club in Richmond, VA on January 7th there will be a record release show (featuring Mensrea, Cannabis Corpse, DBX and more) for Cory’s solo record, “When Worlds Collide”, which he had completed working on just prior to his death. The album will be released early next year, with all proceeds going to the Smoot Family Fund.

GWAR Frontman Dave Brockie Releases Second, Detailed Statement on Guitarist’s Passing

MetalInjection received an email from GWAR’s publicist, with a new official word from GWAR frontman, Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus to bohabs) regarding yesterday’s tragic news of the passing of guitarist Cory Smoot, aka Flattus Maxmimus. Here is Brockie’s statement in full:

After a restless night spent hurtling through the desolate Canadian wilderness, I crawled from my bunk on the tour bus to face reality, grudgingly aware that the the dark dream that gripped us would not fade with the day. We have lost a brother, a husband, a son, and one of the most talented musicians that ever slung an ax. Cory Smoot, longtime lead guitar player for the band GWAR, has passed at the age of 34.

As the singer of GWAR and one of his best friends, I feel it is my duty to try and answer some of the questions that surround his tragic and untimely death. I know the sense of loss and pain is far greater in scope than in the insulated environment of a band on tour, and I will do my best to provide what clarity and comfort I can.

The most glaring question is how? And unfortunately that is the hardest question to answer. The truth will not be known until the medical officials have finished their work. All I can do is relate what we saw with our own eyes.

The last time I saw Cory was after our show in Minneapolis on Weds. night. It was a great show at First Avenue in Minneapolis, one of our favorite places to play. Cory was happy. He was excited about the band and especially the new studio he was building in the Slave Pit back in Richmond. He was deeply in love with his wife, Jamie, and was busily planning their family and future in the beautiful home they had. As usual, after some autographs and banter, I was probably the first person in their bunk as we got ready for a big drive into Canada, and Cory and the rest of the guys were not far behind. As I fell into the slumber that only playing GWAR shows can induce, everything seemed right in the world.

We found Cory the next morning as we collected passports for a border crossing. He was in his bunk, unresponsive, and it quickly was clear that he was dead. It was without a doubt the most horrible moment of my life. That’s all I can say about it.

Within moments everybody was off the bus, standing in a wind-swept parking lot in the middle of nowhere, trying to come to grips with the shock of it. First the ambulance arrived, and then the police, but there was nothing that could be done other than fully investigate the scene and remove Cory with care and respect.

We are completely devastated and shocked beyond belief. One night we had our friend and colleague, happy and healthy in the middle of our best tour in years- and the next morning, so suddenly, he was gone. Never have I seen starker proof of the fragility of life.

Cory will be transported home to Richmond over the next few days, and an announcement regarding services will be made soon. We ask everyone to respect the families wish for privacy, and especially to keep his wife, Jamie, in your thoughts and prayers.

As we work our way through these difficult days the question is — what will GWAR do? After a lot of consideration, we have decided to carry on with the tour. Although the great temptation would be to return home, curl into a fetal position, and mourn, we can’t do that. First off, Cory wouldn’t want that. He would want us to go on and would be pissed if we didn’t. Plus we know the fans don’t want us to quit. They are going to want a chance to come to grips with their loss, and there is no better place to do that than at a GWAR show. Though it’s hard to believe, I think we all would feel a lot worse if we stopped. For better or worse we have to see this through.

That doesn’t mean that Cory will make his final journey without us. When the arrangements have been finalized, Cory’s best friend and GWAR’s music tech Dave “Gibby” Gibson, and myself will return home to attend the services and pay the proper respects to our comrade.

Out of respect to Cory, we have officially retired the character of Flattus Maximus. Flattus has decided to return to his beloved “Planet Home”, and will never return to this mudball planet again. And this is a sadder place for that.

Just the other day I heard Cory tell a story about how some 20 years ago he was fourteen years old, at his first GWAR show, grabbing at the rubber feet of our then- current Flattus, and how blown away he was at the fact that now HE was the one getting his feet pulled by the same kid that he used to be. Cory was always in awe of the patterns of life and went through it with a wide-eyed amazement that translated through his playing. I’ve never known anyone who could pick up literally any instrument and rock it the first time he touched it, and more than that make it look easy. Behind that rubber monster outfit, and sometimes even obscured by it, was one of the most talented and beautiful people I have ever known. I know everyone who’s life was touched by Cory truly loved him, as do we, his bandmates and brothers.

There should be some kind of announcement soon regarding services, etc. It would be great to have a memorial show at some point soon, where some of the bands that Cory worked with could come together and show their love for this truly amazing man who left us all too soon and will be sorely missed by many, many people.

Flattus Maximus

Gwar guitarist Cory Smoot, a.k.a. Flattus Maximus, was found dead earlier today just a few hours before the legendary costumed metal band was to cross the border into Canada to perform shows in Edmonton (Friday), Calgary (Saturday) and Vancouver (Monday).

The cause of death is still unknown. No announcement has been made regarding if Gwar’s Canadian dates would be postponed or cancelled.

Gwar main man Dave Brockie, a.k.a. Oderus Ungurus, sent the following statement to heavy metal website MetalSucks.net:

It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their long time guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR’s current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans. At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today. We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss. A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him.

SWEDENROCK 2011

August 1st, 2011

swedenrock2011.jpg

Let Me Hear You Scream Sweden Rockkkk.Well the annual roadtrip to Swedenrock by the Finnish Metal Rules.com team is already into it’s 11th year!  The  2011 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock in the line-up. Over 70 metal and rock bands offered one hell of an experience for the attendees. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economic situation worldwide and the ticket price had risen a little bit. ver these 11 years of coverage, it has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article of several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The  weather once again showed positive and negative aspects like in 2010. It either rained or was windy with a little sunshine. But we were there for bands, not for having some beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Enjoy or die!!!

IT’S ABOUT TIME: GWAR TO SWEDEN ROCK!

March 3rd, 2011

Lethal monsters from outer space, frozen inside Antarctica for millions of years and defrosted in the 80s due to the hairspray fumes from hair metal fans? Or “only” a band from Virginia with a stageshow even crazier than the music? Either way, Gwar have released twelve albums since 1988, most recently last year’s “Bloody pit of horror”. Their sound has varied, with influences from punk, Frank Zappa-like experimentation and, obviously, brutal metal. The latter ingredient dominates the Gwar sound of today. Other important components of the Gwar concept is the mixture of explicite genitals-related humor (beware of fluid-spraying from the stage) and, indeed, political commentaries. Plus “murders” of objectional individuals – don’t be surprised if you see someone like Mr. Lordi get “executed” on stage during Gwar’s SRF debut. An experience you won’t easily forget!
