GWAR Announces “Fate or Chaos” 2012 Fall Tour

July 25th, 2012

Intergalactic Mutant Overlords GWAR, are plotting their return to the road this fall. Taking a break from working on their new album as well as an extended arctic slumber, GWAR is back with an entirely new show. Your lords and masters will be wreaking havoc across North America, with support coming from DevilDriver, Cancer Bats and Legacy of Disorder. The tour is currently scheduled to kick off October 12th in Philadelphia, PA and run through November 26th in Millvale, PA. More dates are expected to be added in the coming weeks. Tickets go on sale this Friday July 27th and Saturday July 28th.

When asked for comment on the upcoming tour, GWAR front-thing Oderus Urungus muttered something incoherent, then when prodded a bit more muttered something else incoherent. After the third attempt for comment something more intelligible came from the mouth of the warty one:

Said Lord Oderus, “Once again GWAR returns, hoof and nail, to our old stomping grounds, North America, on a tour of utter destruction, and this time nothing less than the greatest power in the universe will do as our primary victim! That’s right, this time GWAR, fresh from our battle with Death, takes on another of history’s biggest assholes…God himself! Seeing as we don’t have the new album done yet, we really had to do something spectacular…”

Oderus belched out a midget and continued: “This tour will also see the arrival of a new Scumdog brother to aid GWAR in our quest to destroy everything that sucks. That’s right, I can finally reveal certain details regarding our new album…ever since our missing band mate Flattus Maximus took his leave of Earth, members of the Maximus tribe have been showing up at our Antarctic fortress, not only to pay their respects but also eat all of our food. And also lay tracks on the new album! You see, every member of the Maximus family rips on guitar (though Flattus taught them all they know), and they were anxious to help us fill the void left by Flattus. We have been working with his brothers Pustulus, Infecticus, Bubonus and even the shunned Corpulus…and right now they are fighting it out as to which one of them will stay here with the mighty GWAR for the “FATE OR CHAOS” Tour…and beyond! Get ready world, this fall shall see the birth of a new Scumdog!”

Canada’s Cancer Bats has spent the last three months touring the world in support of their latest album, Dead Set On Living. This tour will follow US dates with Demon Hunter and Bleeding Through, which can be seen on the band’s facebook page HERE. The reaction to Dead Set On Living across the globe has been overwhelmingly positive. About.com claims that “With positivity this ugly, it’s hard not to find something to love”, while the UK’s Metal Hammer gives the album a 9/10; “It’s heavy, it’s catchy, it’s relentlessly brilliant and, above all else, it’s still quite unlike anything else you’re likely to hear this year”. Fans can pick up Dead Set On Living directly from metalblade.com, as well as on iTunes, Amazon, and at local record stores.

THE CORY SMOOT EXPERIMENT – New Song Streaming

May 22nd, 2012

Available June 5th – All Proceeds To Benefit Smoot Family Fund

THE CORY SMOOT EXPERIMENT was recorded in 2010 at CORY’s Karma Studios, where GWAR, Municipal Waste, and many others have laid down tracks. The songs were originally meant for a concept album called “Religion is Fiction”. CORY was going to lay down all the tracks and then get some of his favorite singers from the internationally-acclaimed Richmond metal scene to do the vocals, including GWAR lead singer Dave Brockie and Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe. Unfortunately this didn’t happen due to scheduling problems but that didn’t mean the end of the project. CORY went ahead and recorded the vocals himself and re-named the project THE CORY SMOOT EXPERIMENT, completing the entire package just before his final tour with GWAR in the fall of 2011.

Today GuitarWorld.com the online home of Guitar World Magazine is hosting an exclusive premiere of a track from When Worlds Collide. Get a first listen to the song “Mutilated” HERE.

After his passing, GWAR and Metal Blade set up the Smoot Family Fund to help provide for Cory’s family. All proceeds from this album will be donated to this fund.

Metal Blade Records Chairman and CEO Brian Slagel commented on the album’s release:

“Metal Blade Records is donating all the proceeds of the Cory Smoot solo album to the Smoot family. Please help us by getting the CD and enjoying the immense talent he was.”

Dave Brockie, a.k.a. Odrus Urungus, lead singer of GWAR shared his memories of CORY.

CORY SMOOT is one of the great unsung heroes of metal. His musical abilities transformed GWAR from a splatter-thrash phenomena into a top metal act. And though he may have left us way too early, he left us a lifetime of music to listen to. He tore it up like few others, and will always be remembered as the true Flattus Maximus. We really loved the man, and there is not a day that goes by or a GWAR show that is played where he is not sorely missed”

When Worlds Collide Track Listing
1. The Blood Red
2. Fortunate Son
3. Religion is Fiction
4. Rebirth
5. Brainfade
6. Mandatory Purgatory
7. Countdown to Oblivion
8. The Gauntlet
9. When Worlds Collide

LEGACY OF DISORDER TEAM UP WITH GWAR FOR U.S. TOUR

January 28th, 2012

Legacy of Disorder has just unleashed a simply kick-ass sophomore release, ‘Last Man Standing,’ and will soon be taking it to the streets, as they unite with veteran gore metallists Gwar for a full U.S. tour.

“Legacy Of Disorder are chomping at the bit to get this U.S. tour with headliners Gwar underway,” says LoD lead guitarist, Rana Freilich. “We are fully stoked and excited to be included and part of such a cool U.S. tour with such an established band as Gwar Legacy of Disorder is comprised of singer James Robinson, bassist Jason Keill, and drummer Matt Thompson and guitarist Rana Freilich.

With such Hard-hitting standout tracks on the album as  ‘Break,’ ‘March to Death’ and the title tune ‘Last Man Standing’, Legacy Of Disorder is certainly starting to hit its metallic stride. ‘Last Man Standing’ was engineered, mixed and co/produced by Sterling Winfield (who is best known to the metal masses for his work with Pantera) and mastered by Maor Appelbaum (Sepultura, Halford)

Legacy of Disorder is one ferocious live beast when they hit the stage, so it is only fitting that the quartet will be paired with one of the most over-the-top and outrageous live shows out there. “Being part of this tour will really give us a chance to get our music heard in the U.S.,” adds Freilich. “We can’t wait to hit the U.S. to throwdown with Gwar throughout North America!”

Coroner confirms GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot’s cause of death

December 8th, 2011
Flattus Maximus

Flattus Maximus of GWAR

The Smoot family and Slave Pit Inc. released a statement regarding the official cause of death of guitarist Cory Smoot. Cory had played the character of Flattus Maximus for over ten years, and was discovered dead on the band’s tour bus on Nov. 3rd of this year. He was 34.

Stated North Dakota coroner William Masselo, MD:
“We have finalized the autopsy report and death certificate. I have determined that Cory died from a coronary artery thrombosis brought about by his pre-existing coronary artery disease.”

The band, which will continue as a four-piece until the current tour schedule is complete, has officially retired the character of Flattus Maximus, and has announced no plans regarding a new GWAR-tarist.

Metal Blade and GWAR have since set-up the Smoot Family Foundation to raise funds for Cory’s wife, Jaime, and their unborn child. Donations can be made HERE. Also, at The Canal Club in Richmond, VA on January 7th there will be a record release show (featuring Mensrea, Cannabis Corpse, DBX and more) for Cory’s solo record, “When Worlds Collide”, which he had completed working on just prior to his death. The album will be released early next year, with all proceeds going to the Smoot Family Fund.

GWAR Frontman Dave Brockie Releases Second, Detailed Statement on Guitarist’s Passing

November 4th, 2011
Flattus Maximus

Flattus Maximus of GWAR

MetalInjection received an email from GWAR’s publicist, with a new official word from GWAR frontman, Dave Brockie (Oderus Urungus to bohabs) regarding yesterday’s tragic news of the passing of guitarist Cory Smoot, aka Flattus Maxmimus. Here is Brockie’s statement in full:

After a restless night spent hurtling through the desolate Canadian wilderness, I crawled from my bunk on the tour bus to face reality, grudgingly aware that the the dark dream that gripped us would not fade with the day. We have lost a brother, a husband, a son, and one of the most talented musicians that ever slung an ax. Cory Smoot, longtime lead guitar player for the band GWAR, has passed at the age of 34.

As the singer of GWAR and one of his best friends, I feel it is my duty to try and answer some of the questions that surround his tragic and untimely death. I know the sense of loss and pain is far greater in scope than in the insulated environment of a band on tour, and I will do my best to provide what clarity and comfort I can.

The most glaring question is how? And unfortunately that is the hardest question to answer. The truth will not be known until the medical officials have finished their work. All I can do is relate what we saw with our own eyes.

The last time I saw Cory was after our show in Minneapolis on Weds. night. It was a great show at First Avenue in Minneapolis, one of our favorite places to play. Cory was happy. He was excited about the band and especially the new studio he was building in the Slave Pit back in Richmond. He was deeply in love with his wife, Jamie, and was busily planning their family and future in the beautiful home they had. As usual, after some autographs and banter, I was probably the first person in their bunk as we got ready for a big drive into Canada, and Cory and the rest of the guys were not far behind. As I fell into the slumber that only playing GWAR shows can induce, everything seemed right in the world.

We found Cory the next morning as we collected passports for a border crossing. He was in his bunk, unresponsive, and it quickly was clear that he was dead. It was without a doubt the most horrible moment of my life. That’s all I can say about it.

Within moments everybody was off the bus, standing in a wind-swept parking lot in the middle of nowhere, trying to come to grips with the shock of it. First the ambulance arrived, and then the police, but there was nothing that could be done other than fully investigate the scene and remove Cory with care and respect.

We are completely devastated and shocked beyond belief. One night we had our friend and colleague, happy and healthy in the middle of our best tour in years- and the next morning, so suddenly, he was gone. Never have I seen starker proof of the fragility of life.

Cory will be transported home to Richmond over the next few days, and an announcement regarding services will be made soon. We ask everyone to respect the families wish for privacy, and especially to keep his wife, Jamie, in your thoughts and prayers.

As we work our way through these difficult days the question is — what will GWAR do? After a lot of consideration, we have decided to carry on with the tour. Although the great temptation would be to return home, curl into a fetal position, and mourn, we can’t do that. First off, Cory wouldn’t want that. He would want us to go on and would be pissed if we didn’t. Plus we know the fans don’t want us to quit. They are going to want a chance to come to grips with their loss, and there is no better place to do that than at a GWAR show. Though it’s hard to believe, I think we all would feel a lot worse if we stopped. For better or worse we have to see this through.

That doesn’t mean that Cory will make his final journey without us. When the arrangements have been finalized, Cory’s best friend and GWAR’s music tech Dave “Gibby” Gibson, and myself will return home to attend the services and pay the proper respects to our comrade.

Out of respect to Cory, we have officially retired the character of Flattus Maximus. Flattus has decided to return to his beloved “Planet Home”, and will never return to this mudball planet again. And this is a sadder place for that.

Just the other day I heard Cory tell a story about how some 20 years ago he was fourteen years old, at his first GWAR show, grabbing at the rubber feet of our then- current Flattus, and how blown away he was at the fact that now HE was the one getting his feet pulled by the same kid that he used to be. Cory was always in awe of the patterns of life and went through it with a wide-eyed amazement that translated through his playing. I’ve never known anyone who could pick up literally any instrument and rock it the first time he touched it, and more than that make it look easy. Behind that rubber monster outfit, and sometimes even obscured by it, was one of the most talented and beautiful people I have ever known. I know everyone who’s life was touched by Cory truly loved him, as do we, his bandmates and brothers.

There should be some kind of announcement soon regarding services, etc. It would be great to have a memorial show at some point soon, where some of the bands that Cory worked with could come together and show their love for this truly amazing man who left us all too soon and will be sorely missed by many, many people.

Flattus Maximus

Flattus Maximus

Gwar guitarist Cory Smoot, a.k.a. Flattus Maximus, was found dead earlier today just a few hours before the legendary costumed metal band was to cross the border into Canada to perform shows in Edmonton (Friday), Calgary (Saturday) and Vancouver (Monday).

The cause of death is still unknown. No announcement has been made regarding if Gwar’s Canadian dates would be postponed or cancelled.

Gwar main man Dave Brockie, a.k.a. Oderus Ungurus, sent the following statement to heavy metal website MetalSucks.net:

It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their long time guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR’s current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans. At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today. We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss. A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him.

SWEDENROCK 2011

August 1st, 2011

swedenrock2011.jpg

Let Me Hear You Scream Sweden Rockkkk.Well the annual roadtrip to Swedenrock by the Finnish Metal Rules.com team is already into it’s 11th year!  The  2011 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock in the line-up. Over 70 metal and rock bands offered one hell of an experience for the attendees. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economic situation worldwide and the ticket price had risen a little bit. ver these 11 years of coverage, it has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article of several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The  weather once again showed positive and negative aspects like in 2010. It either rained or was windy with a little sunshine. But we were there for bands, not for having some beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Enjoy or die!!!

IT’S ABOUT TIME: GWAR TO SWEDEN ROCK!

March 3rd, 2011

Lethal monsters from outer space, frozen inside Antarctica for millions of years and defrosted in the 80s due to the hairspray fumes from hair metal fans? Or “only” a band from Virginia with a stageshow even crazier than the music? Either way, Gwar have released twelve albums since 1988, most recently last year’s “Bloody pit of horror”. Their sound has varied, with influences from punk, Frank Zappa-like experimentation and, obviously, brutal metal. The latter ingredient dominates the Gwar sound of today. Other important components of the Gwar concept is the mixture of explicite genitals-related humor (beware of fluid-spraying from the stage) and, indeed, political commentaries. Plus “murders” of objectional individuals – don’t be surprised if you see someone like Mr. Lordi get “executed” on stage during Gwar’s SRF debut. An experience you won’t easily forget!

Gwar "Bloody Pit of Horror"

Gwar "Bloody Pit of Horror" - NEW ALBUM IN STORES NOW ON METAL BLADE RECORDS

“LUST IN SPACE” AND “BLOODY PIT OF HORROR” PICTURE DISCS TO BE RELEASED

After a brief return home to their hulking Antarctic stronghold, intergalactic murder-machines GWAR are returning to the U.S. for one final spurt of touring before doing whatever the hell they are up to after that. The Lords and Masters of this world apparently tired of abusing penguins and are ready to return to the surface world and begin the homestretch towards the conclusion of their seemingly endless 25th Anniversary “Slay-a-Bration”, which has now grown to encompass their 26th year of rebirth on Earth from the icy prison that for centuries had been their fate. When will GWAR stop celebrating their 25th anniversary? Only one warty front-thing can say for certain. Oderus was reached for comment at his command bunker located deep beneath the GWAR Fortress, where he took a break from his undead re-creation of the Battle of Stalingrad to chime in about the campaign of continuing idiocy and destruction GWAR plans on schleping to you, the faithful human scum.

“It’s seems we were about 8000 zombies short of our goal, which was to fill every hull of our Skumdog War Fleet with blood-mad slavering zombie shock-soldiers. So we decided to come back to the U.S., re-open the Bloody Pit, and mutate some more of our helpless followers. Then we shall invade the very heart of the galaxy with our infected hatred and lust for war against all things alive. That and party.”

The new GWAR dates are as follows:

Thu/Feb-17 Raleigh, NC @ Lincoln Theatre

Fri/Feb-18 Allentown PA @ Crocodile Rock

Sat/Feb-19 Millvale PA @ Mr. Smalls Theatre

Sun/Feb-20 Brooklyn, NY @ Music Hall of Williamsburg

Mon/Feb-21 Syracuse, NY @ Westcott Theater

Tue/Feb-22 Burlington, VT @ Higher Ground

Wed/Feb-23 Providence, RI @ Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel

Thu/Feb-24 Sayreville, NJ @ Starland Ballroom

Fri/Feb-25 Richmond, VA @ The National

In other GWAR related news, Metal Blade Records has announced the release dates for the vinyl versions of both GWAR’s “Lust and Space” and “Bloody Pit of Horror”.

“Lust in Space” is being released on January 18 and it is a picture disc with a gatefold sleeve.

“Bloody Pit of Horror” will be released on February 15 and it is a picture disc with a die cut gatefold

sleeve.

Who would have guessed that everyone’s favorite bellicose bass player Beefcake the Mighty had a soft side? When he’s not out singing about or actually beating things to death, the rotund one has volunteered for Bloody Disgusting.com to offer his advice to the lovelorn. GWAR Singer Oderus Urungus Defends Sarah Palin “Slaying”

December 2nd, 2010

ODERUS TO TAKE OVER DECIBEL MAGAZINE’S TWITTER ACCOUNT THIS FRIDAY FROM 3:00-4:00 PM EASTERN

GWAR have always made this world a better place by killing off celebrities and politicians on stage during their legendary live show. Blood thirsty GWAR fans crave and expect this, and yes, your Lords and Masters make good on it nightly. The “Bloody Tour of Horror” is no exception to this as it features warty front thing Oderus Urungus and the rest of the band tearing apart Lady Gaga and former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Apparently the Sarah Palin constituents and supporters have caught wind of the nightly slaying and the political blogs and websites have been just overwhelmed with comments about Palin’s untimely demise. Check out the video below. Is GWAR getting ready to delve into the political field even more? Will Oderus run for president? Is Sarah Palin really dead? Did Oderus fuck her corpse? Only one alien would have the answer to that question…

When reached for comment on this highly offensive slaying of Mrs. Palin, (to Republicans and tea partiers at least) possible presidential candidate and overlord Oderus gave the following statement: “Is this what American politics has come to? We have killed every President since Reagan, regardless of party affiliation, and the proof of it is all over the net…but the right-wing tea bag numb-nuts are getting their knickers in a twist over somebody that doesn’t even hold office, and in fact left her office as Alaskan governor in order to concentrate on her reality show…and is this woman actually being considered as a potential president? Why does the agenda of the right require that America be viewed as a global laughing stock? Because between Wikileaks and the attention this idiot gets, that is exactly what you are…” scoffed Oderus.

“Besides, we don’t even kill her, just rip her in half, and honestly she seems to love it! Anything for attention, I suppose.”

Santa Oderus is currently featured on the latest issue of Decibel Magazine. The magazine also features an amazing story about the inner workings of GWAR’s infamous “Slave Pit”. If you haven’t picked up your copy yet, you can do so online at decibelmagazine.com.

In addition to being on the cover of Decibel, Oderus will be taking over Decibel’s twitter account this Friday December 3rd from 3-4 PM EST. Make sure to follow @dbmagazine on Twitter and see what kind of Christmas Cheer Oderus has in store. He will be giving away prizes and will be answering questions from you, the lowly human scum. This could be your one chance to interact with biggest dicked alien front man in the music business, unless you bring crack to an upcoming show…then Oderus will hang with you all night.

Recently GWAR took to the stage on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on NBC. The band performed their new single “Zombies, March”. The performance will be airing again this Friday night December 3rd at 12:35 AM EST on NBC, so if you missed it the first time or if you saw it the first time, watch it again this Friday night.
