GREAT WHITE AND JACK RUSSELL REACH AGREEMENT OVER USE OF “GREAT WHITE” NAME

July 23rd, 2013

Great White and co-founding member/original lead singer Jack Russell have announced that they have entered into an agreement settling their pending litigation over the “Great White” name.

In March, 2012, Russell sued his former band-mates Mark Kendall, Michael Lardie and Audie Desbrow over their continuing use of “Great White” after Russell had taken a leave of absence from the band for medical reasons. The band countersued, and the parties have been involved in contentious litigation for the last year. After three days of closed-door mediation before U.S. Magistrate Judge Carla Woehrle, the parties reached a comprehensive agreement. While many of the terms of the agreement will remain confidential, it can be revealed that, going forward, the current Great White band will continue to use the name “Great White”‘ and Russell will perform under the name “Jack Russell’s Great White”.

Jack Russell’s GREAT WHITE has hit the high seas to embark in a two month two moth voyage across the Nation until early Fall.

GREAT WHITE’s Jack Russell – “I Am Deeply Hurt And Saddened That My Old Friends And Band Mates Would Exploit My Medical Conditions To Try To Prevent Me From Doing What I Love”

December 16th, 2011

On December 10th, original GREAT WHITE vocalist Jack Russell issued the following statement:

“Just wanted to announce that I will be coming back with my band Great White and a brand new lineup. My new bandmates are some of the most incredible musicians I have ever had the privilege to play with: Matthew Johnson – former guitarist for Great White, Derrick Pontier – former drummer for Great White, Dario Seixas – former bassist for FIREHOUSE and the STEPHEN PEARCY band, and Robby Lochner – former guitarist for ROB HALFORD’s band and CHERIE CURRIE.”

Following the above announcement, Russell’s former bandmates in the original Great White – who were just as shocked as the fans by the news – issued a statement of their own.

In a couple of excerpts they stated:

“As we all know Jack Russell has been fighting drug and alcohol abuse for many years. He has had numerous stints in and out of treatment facilities and hospitals. ”

“Since Jack’s departure in August 2010, Great White has performed almost 100 concerts. We’ve had no shortened sets, cancellations or song choice limitations due to vocal issues. In this struggling economy, fans need and deserve more—not less. We owe it to our fans and the promoters to not to allow Jack Russell and some garage band to hurt Great White’s classic rock legacy and bright future.

Jack Russell does not have the right to start his own Great White or use the name without our names in the lineup. We will litigate any promoter that books ‘Jack Russell’s Great White’ or uses any logo featuring the name Great White.

We give you our word, we will continue through 2012 and beyond to provide you with the top quality musical performances you have been accustomed and deserve. We hope and pray that Jack gets healthy, happy and sober. His health and well-being is the only thing that matters.”

Now, Jack Russell has issued the following statement: “I am deeply hurt and saddened by the fact that my old friends and band mates would purposely exploit my personal and private medical conditions to try to prevent me from doing what I love. I can’t even fathom as to why they would do such a thing and why they would want to personally hurt me so much. This is very upsetting considering that more than half of the band has had their own issues, demons, or personal problems at some point, all of which affected the band at one time or another. I am excited about the future and look forward to seeing all my friends on the road. My interview with Metal Sludge is the only one I will be doing right now, and I will make no further comments regarding this matter.”

 GREAT WHITE

INTERVIEW BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

Great White, the Los Angeles based hard rock band, formed in late 70’s. The band gained its popularity during the mid 1980s and early 1990s. The band released several successful albums including platinum sellers: ONCE BITTEN.., …TWICE SHY and HOOKED and they gained great airplay on MTV with hit songs like “Rock Me” and "Once Bitten, Twice Shy”". Although band has since then lost its platinum status they have continued to release albums and toured successfully across the world. The latest release RISING came out in 2009 and since its release the band has been almost constantly on tour. In the late summer of 2010 band announced that its lead singer and founding member Jack Russell was forced to sit out from bands activities for serious health reasons. Although Jack is very important part of the Great White sound, the band decided to carry on with other singers. Terry Ilous from XYZ did several shows with the band and the former Warrant Singer Jani Lane is booked to fill Jack’s shoes for several near future shows. In September, the band came to Sweden to headline Stockholm Rockout festival with another singer, Paul Shortino (Rough Cutt, Quiet Riot), handling the lead vocalist duties. It was time to sit down with the band’s nother founding member, guitarist Mark Kendall, and try to find out what’s really going on in the world of Great White!

STOCKHOLM ROCK OUT -Part II Great White, Keel, Lizzy Borden, U.D.O, Pretty Boy Floyd etc..

STOCKHOLM ROCK OUT -part II

Stockholm Rock Out is a new rock festival in Sweden which is now in its second year. When the first edition of the festival took place on May 1st it was almost disastrous because the giant volcano clouds forced most of the headliners to cancel their appearances but this time all measures worked well without any unexpected problems or last minute changes. By European standards, the band line up in Stockholm Rock Out was somewhat extravagant. The list included many great bands which haven’t been here in ages, like Keel and Tuff, and there were also some unique one off performances like the one with Great White w/ Paul Shortino on vocals and the farewell show of Zinny J. Zan. Like the organizers advertised, this festival is indeed organized for music lovers by music lovers.

GREAT WHITE -Mark Kendall and Audie Desbrow

March 5th, 2008

GREAT WHITE

Great White was formed in the early ’80s by vocalist Jack Russell and guitarist Mark Kendall.  Unlike many others, more glam influenced, bands from L.A scene Great White were playing more Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith- and AC/DC-influenced metal and they soon got their own rapidly growing base. The bands first release, an independent album called OUT OF THE NIGHT, sold more than 20,000 copies in 1982 and soon they were signed to major label EMI. Unfortunately that relationship didn’t last too long and band found themselves doing another independent album after just one release with. EMI. Another independent release SHOT IN THE DARK was released in 1983 at it did help the band to get a new deal with another major label Capitol Records. The album was released by Capitol in 1987 and later on the same year they released their breakthrough album ONCE BITTEN which went platinum. The smash hit single "Rock Me" became a true hard rock anthem. Things went even better with bands next release TWICE SHY which included the band’s biggest hit to date; a cover of an old Mott The Hoople classic "Once Bitten .. Twice Shy". The single had massive success and it helped Great White to get slots ongreat tours in late 80′s. The band toured with other multiplatinum bands like Ratt and Tesla and they played at some of the biggest European festivals like the  Monsters of Rock -tour along with such bands as Iron Maiden, David Lee Roth and KISS.

In the early 90′s the band’s record sales started to go down and like many other bands from their era they finally got dropped from Capitol in 1993 after the disappointing sales of  PSYCHO CITY. The band soon found a new home from Zoo and they released SAIL AWAY via that label in 1994. LET IT ROCK came out in 1996 and it was released by another new label Imago. Although the band wasn’t in headlines much anymore they still kept constantly touring, mostly in clubs, across the U.S and in 1999 they got another deal from John Kalodner’s label Portrait. Although the next album CAN’T GET THERE FROM HERE did pretty well and sold about 80 000 copies in the U.S alone, the band slowly disbanded after band member after member left and finally it was only Jack Russell left from the classic line up. Officially band called it quits after the farewell show, including almost complete classic line up, in the end of 2002 and later on that show was released as a live album called THANK YOU GOODNIGHT.

Jack Russell continued his career as a solo artist and soon he started to call his backing band Great White. Although Jack Russell’s Great White, also known as a "fake white", were soon joined by Mark Kendall on guitar they were totally forgotten by the mainstream. That was until  pyrotechnics used by the band sparked a fire in a Rhode Island nightclub on February 20, 2003, killing 100 people, including the band’s second guitarist at that time, Ty Longley. Since then the band kept on touring and doing benefit concerts for victims of the fire. In early 2007 the band decided to regroup its classic lineup: Russell, Kendall, Audie Desbrow, Michael Lardie and bassist, since 1996, Sean McNabb and celebrate their 25’Th anniversary with some shows on the West Coast. Later in the same year the band released their first album of original material in eight years called BACK TO THE RHYTHM. The band arrived to do their first European tour in years last January and I was able to sit down with Mark and Audie prior to the bands sold out concert in Copenhagen. Here we go, the past, present and future of Great White !
